Rise of the No ones

Maybe youve noticed , maybe you havent but there has been a subtle yet large shift in Sports Media world .
That world was always sewn up , as you know , by ex players . The media looked no further and if that player had managed at one stage also then beautiful, bag him up for a show. It didnt matter if he could commentate , the fact that he was well known in football circles was enough .
Backfired many times . Henry sounded almost stupid in his Sky Sports million pound role.

I am delighted to report that particular trend is ending !
Tv,,,Many will have heard and seen the female commentators and co presenters at the World Cup and that is the most obvious forum to notice change . But it has permeated different areas of media and the change is profound . Two football men on the mic is gone and has in the main been switched to an ex pro with a media presenter who has been tailored to the role .
The public win in this situation but it wouldnt have changed if it wasnt asked for .
I myself have emailed Espn in the past to have “ controversial Irishman “ Tommy Smyth thrown out of the studio before he drives everyone off the game with his prehistoric jibe “ And he bulges the back of the oul onion bag ! “ which only he thought was funny . The average fan wants to hear better than he can hear in the pub and if you have paid for a journalist’s view then it should be better than anything a “ layman “ can produce right ? They arent “ experts “ like their title claims if they dont teach you anything .
The female presenters in particular excelled and raised eyebrows with their knowledge of the sport. Theres are some excellent female sports journalists and they are helping to raise the bar across the board. They are no there for the eye candy factor thats for sure.

The Blogs,,,Is the quality of paid journalists in main stream media sites soo much better than the more prominent bloggers that the hacks deserve six figures for it . No way, not in my book. Just looking at Celtic cyberspace there are many bloggers with a hell of a knack.
Now obviously I dont know anyones blogging habits ,,which site you check first and how often etc ,, but ask yourself when it comes to your team are you reading non pro opinion the most or paid opinion ? Im telling you and Im sure many have noticed , many bloggers can and do leave the media trailing behind in the rear view. Thats another reason why print is dying.

Podcasts,,,If youre not aware its a huge area of media , one that Im very fond of as it can provide a familiar accent and a bit of banter with your footie news . There are many and again a mix of professional and amateur .
If you didnt know which was which and I forced both types upon you I think you would have a very hard time choosing who the amateurs were.
In recent years I have witnessed probably the best two amateur podcasts become soo popular they went fulltime at it . Through hard work I assume and a slice of planning and luck, normal football fans now get paid to talk fulltime about their team,, how cool is that !
A city wide radio broadcaster picked up one show for their drive time slot ,, fantastic free advertising plus an admission that its on par with regular paid broadcasters. They have went from strength to strength since and I highly recommend checking them out , free of course .
www.theanfieldwrap.com
The other one successfully tours and does live shows with two its presenters being incorporated into other professional podcasts with ease despite no on paper training . They have lit up the show and I would say raised the bar actually .
Again this comes highly recommended should you wish to kill time with some footie chat .
The football ramble . https://radiostakhanov.com/footballramble

Looking at the overall picture seems it no longer good enough to just wheel in a face / name , they must have substance for their time in the spotlight of any type of media . Amateurs and Women are pushing out the old traditional fayre normally served up .
This also confronts another myth , the old do you not think someone that has managed and played knows better than you myth . Thats clearly been shown up with them out on their ear in favour of a “ No One “ . Maybe they actually do know more about the game but just cant express it but no one will be convincing me because youve been involved in the game you know more about the sport overall. Maybe the ins and outs but I doubt that most would dazzle me with in depth knowledge. Many are millionaires also and it doesnt really matter if they dont challenge themselves or dont give 100% . Just listen to some ex pros for a minute ,,, many are terrible . I would rather mute it than listen to Mark Lawrenson and I might well be in the majority on that.
Sunday columns are traditionally the cream of the crop right ? If you read that article does it stand waaaay above something you might read during the week from one of the more eloquent bloggers for instance ? No it doesnt , not at all.

The No One’s are here , get used to it !

Morning,Mahe.

Many a true word there, mate. Some of the expert summarisers drive me demented. And the commentators insights are usually about ten minutes after you and your mates have discussed the same thing!

As for my opinion not mattering because I never played the game, what a pile of patronising pish, and a total insult anaw. Aye,I’ve been watching for fifty years with a blindfold on.

To paraphrase, those who can,do. And those who can’t,get highly paid to pontificate about what those who can should have done. Wankers.

While I remember, here is an example of what can happen when the money becomes more important than the football.

mahe good post as always, always baffles me why they need 2 presenters, when I was growing up we had peter Thompson Arthur Montford bob crampsey david francie etc,. they didn’t need anyone beside them..nostalgia.com.hh.

Scottish football industry is an extension of the lodge. That´s emphasised every time Chris Sutton ignores Stephen Craigan agenda or Michael Stewart poo poos Stephen Thompson (which is often). The Sun, The Record, The Scotsman, BBC Scotland, STV, Radio Clyde.

Lets be honest here when you have Billy Dodds declaring to millions around the world at a crucial moment

“He wiz in his eez road. So he skelped it ower the sticks. It´s a no brainer for me” …outwith Scotland it is just white noise

make sure your not watching with somebody who has a better command of the English language than a Scottish football pundit (i.e any foreigner who has studied English for a month). It always ends up in a conversation about dialects in the middle of the game….. it´s not exactly selling the game to the world now is it ?

The football industry “especially in Scotland” is so greedy corrupt and incestuous that it will eventually turn the public off.

And Celtic FC are just as guilty and lazy about addressing this issue.

@ Gold from the previous article:

” made us the most financially successful club ever in Scottish Football.”

You attribute that to Lawwell and not Brendan? Can you explain how the board have provided this success, aside from the hiring of Brendan (i.e. what has changed in the way they do business between the Ronny years and the Brendan years that led to this success)? Also, as most fans have heard, Brendan was hired at Desmond’s request after the Sevco director abused Desmond during the 2016 cup final.

It would also be wrong to suggest that the last two years are the crowning moments of a well thought out and executed plan to bring success to the club; they are not. As is usual for the board, Brendan’s arrival was borne from being reactive as apposed to proactive. We were on a downward spiral: half empty Celtic park; bottom of Europa League group; revenue of £50m; and losing to Sevco at the first time of asking. Were we a well run club in those years?

The truth of the matter is that Brendan has brought until know, unknown levels of success to the club which has, in turn, generated record income, profit and cash at the bank. Performance leads inextricably to revenue; they are not detached.

Also, £60m in wages is for the whole organisation and not solely the footballing department.

Hi Majoc , yer man Martin Samuel is one of the ones I try to always catch talking about the game hes great to listen to . That article is spot on he has been a waste of the shirt and I think ship him out and a lot will fall into place . He gives off the Ive made it vibe thats for sure . Have seen him play great in some games and can see why they bought him but its just not happening for him . I think he needs too much time on the ball myself.
As for youve never played the game you dont know ,,,that is gone now like I said above .
Here,, have you ever heard Ray Harford commentate ? Good Lord he is insane and some of his quotes are timeless ! Can be a bit much though .

It’s not so long ago that we were astonished, disgusted, frankly pissed off, that PL was picking up a million quid a year while our product on the pitch was in serious decline. I thought he was hired as a Financial Controller, about 80k worth of benefit to the Plc.

All of a sudden,he runs the entire operation, and now takes well over £2m pa and that doesn’t include his accumulated bonus programme which lands in 2020.

Wish I could gain such reward for being such an incompetent-Mahe,am I allowed to use that word on here?

And btw, anyone who feels like taking me on re my opinion of his incompetence had better be on the ball.

Newspaper articles are generally below par vs the best bloggers.

The ratio of passion/freedom of professional (sic) sports writers to new media, works in the favour/well for bloggers focused on ‘their’ team.

That is an obvious advantage now and the savvy online generation must be getting close to 80/90%. Newspapers in print will go. What will replace them … same banners on-line? Is that realistic, does anyone actually trust MSM anymore? What will they do to regain control?…. we know they want it and will certainly do whatever it takes to recover it.

Now in an age that mirrors the introduction of printing press and the rise of political pamphleteers.

How many single issue pamphlets were secretly run off and distributed to target audiences and provided knowledge & influenced thinking at a level hitherto, unavailable? Agendas could be driven from the ground up like never before. Like independent blogs now!

If you held power, or wanted more power, that was a risk, an unacceptable risk.

Those ( well-funded) pamphlets became newspapers, the rest, or marginal titles, were swallowed up as the main source of news or opinion was now widely available locally in the ‘press’ … people relied on ‘late’ or ‘special’ editions for news. I imagine most of it was real and true… at one time.

Slowly ‘local’ campaigning titles were lost as the big boys got a grip and took us to where we are now. Narrow controlled agendas, leeching on fear and lies. Burying the truth.

By the time Radio and TV arrived the control agenda on broadcasting was almost immediate. Licence required dear boy…Aunty beeb had us all by the nuts. Public/National interest.

So why now, 80 plus years on is the internet not been as tightly controlled? Why is anyone with a device, and net access, allowed to just say what they want … pretty much everything is getting out there. At least for a while.

Why is that? Is it naive to believe it’s not controlled on a day to day level. Does anyone really know?

Conspiracy Age. Some serious topics and powerful people discussed openly. Unrestrained.

How long will it be permitted?

Consider this. The switch could be flicked off …with the click of the fingers. Snap!!

Is that the ultimate measure of control…ramp up our dependence on this medium and then..

PUFF!!!

Gone… everyone wandering about in a daze …. WTF happened there? Not on twitter/FB/txt/email of course, because that has gone… who will you WTF now. How?

It would be crazy if that was the agenda. Get everyone hooked on pumping their gums online over 20 years. Reliance on info like a drug needing the outlet and the contact then PUFF … gone!! A generation never knew or learned how to organise locally, or communicate verbally at higher levels. WTF!!!!

That’s just bampottery of course.. isn’t it?

Speaking of which. There are a dozen or so Celtic minded blogs/casts now. The Golden era of blogging.

How many will there be in 5 years time?

Remember 30 years ago walking 3 miles in the Spanish heat to pick up an overpriced red-top ( no ‘Qualities’ in Majorca or Benidorm then) to catch the latest ‘FansVoice/Your Say’ letters to ed etc … thinking, wait a minute… Celtic fans think that? Jim from Coatbridge didn’t exist of course….. Sammy from Bearsden was the ed. 😉 how long did it take you to work out it was all bollox?

At one point reliance was on the mates on the bus/work at games/pub for chat and views. Still a limited circle for most of us, and by definition narrowishh, but fairly consistent.

Now, for the price of 5 Heralds per month ( extra cash pays for season tickets ya bassas!!) we can access and ‘hear’ what guys in Munich, Toronto and California, Sydney and even remote Caves in the Spanish hills ( …with nice swimming pools ..;-) think and feel
about the situation – the net (sic) has widened and suddenly the overall Combined knowledge and expertise level has ratcheted up a few notches.

Stop and think more, big noises not so noisy in the pub now. Opinions can be thought through more carefuly and articulated clearly (ish). Also, insiders and whistleblowers have an outlet…. cheating and dodgy dealings can be discussed openly. Not lost on the cutting room floor or shoved in ed’s. Bottom drawer.

One of the downsides is folk can pretty much say anything and make up bollox for fun or mischief… or malice. Although, most of those can be identified in time. Over 10 years of Contributing it’s difficult not to let the mask slip …. Hootennay? busy? Ok see you next time buddy …. 5 years later … still busy? hmmmmmm….

Anyway, how many blogs will survive and what will New Media look like in future? Who knows, but its worthwhile remembering how the local pamphlets and campaining newspapers were slowly but surely swallowed up.

At the moment we are spoiled for choice and finding the group that resonates with personal outlooks and preferences is fairly easy to access. Is that going to continue? Be allowed to continue?!

Already it’s beginning to look like the original blogs are becoming the Celtic View. Not in a good way!

Where will we all be going for our quality info. in 5 years… 5 months….?

Viva the pamphleteers and independent bloggers.

Also, the guy with his finger OFF that bloody switch….

Next hoot is 10 Nov,old bean. If you’re in town, you know the drill. Btw,The Herald is owned by the company I work for. It was, when I joined, not only very profitable, but also the lodestone to whichevery MD and editor aspired.

The division I work for,in Swindon, had a higher reader uptake in its local area than The Sun. Very unusual,The Sun was almost universal, but more people read our paper in Swindon.

I attended a meeting with our very experienced MD around 2004,where he explained the way forward for our group. It was performing very well, sales were outstanding. We sold over 40k in a town of 180k.

Advertising was, well, they couldn’t get enough,we were regularly a 48 page pull-out for jobs,64 pages for houses, the paper was thicker than yer average hun.

So they put all the content on line. For free. That was the reason for the meeting,to proudly announce the slow death of publishing in Swindon. All the executives are beaming,I’m gaun WTF? Give it away, that’s suicide.

Apparently I know nothing, but I do know our sales figures are about 20% of what they were only ten years ago.

Meantime, very few of the highly paid executives are still there. They all got a huge pay-off,the people still there got a huge kick in the bank balance

Incompetence rewarded,where have I seen that before…

Get yer arse along to the hoot and bring M along. There’s a good lad!!!!

In the diary buddy.

Love the local ‘wee paper’ – still the only newsprint I buy.

Still Daily but usually only buy once a week. Will step it up …

For now the msm are still the ones with the megaphone, for sure it’s changing, but it’s very slow, too slow, the internet can and very often does break news, till the msm breaks it most of it stays buried, just the way they like it.
I remember the last time I was in Barcelona at a Celtic game, got talking to a few blokes in a bar, must have been 40-50 and four at most had heard of CQN, it may well have changed now, but I doubt it.
I bet that most who go to the game tomorrow will still get their info from the scottish rags and the TV, a long ways to go imo.

mahe

SES,
Partner if youre going to pump out over 500 words gies tomorrow’s article next time . 😉
No but seriously , many thanks for your input . Apologies for not responding yesterday , was busy domestically . If I ever dont respond its because Im too busy with an almost six month old who should be jailed for being too cute but has started crawling and theres my typing time cut down bigtime ! But hey, at least Im not stressed out at work like the mate from Tallaght livin here who phoned me last night.

The Blogs,,,you say about a dozen eh. I would be very curious how many of those are just regular bloggers blogging or is it a job ? I have nothing against any blog but I mentioned before I think some people see it as an easy way or just even a way to bring in an income . I dont think this usually ends in a better experience for the reader as you then have ads and usually a lot of site volume / posts to kinda justify your existence .
How many talk about only the game and dont branch out also ? I love it when a site has something different and maybe your learn something.
I have seen a site I read make 3 predictions that didnt come true . This has put some off that site . Theres a big lesson there . One site is PPV sometimes but some articles are free ? I find that strange ,,go one way or the other surely ? Throw out free weeks reading when you wish to up the subscription numbers would be best .
Where will they go ? Usually the better ones out last the weaker . Being established helps a bit
sure but it will not save you if there is better all around. Being diverse and having more than one medium ie podcasts and articles will really help . Some blogs seem to be just saying the same thing over and over .
And when you tend to be in someones company regular its a little harder for many to be completely honest if critiquing that person ie try writing about Peters screwups when youre going to be face to face with him in 48 hours .
Not a dig at anyone merely justifying my belief that perhaps distance is best for this author in this case . Thats why I hope by being diverse and ad free we can be a bit different and popular .

Hot as fork here I shall tell ya. Weekend on the deck in the shade beckons.
Happy Friday pal and hope all is well . Hail Hail

Traditional media is dying out indeed . The older ones are now realising just what the net is and how to use it and the ones who will replace them are already fully wired in to a tech lifestyle . Some print will exist for nostalgia but many will go digital only . Its waay cheaper as well and environmentally friendlier .
The media used to be able to spout what they want and people believed it,,now you can google anything in seconds and can have a lie or mistruth sniffed out in under a minute .
Hail Hail

Mahe
I think you have the nail on the head with this…..”The older ones are now realising just what the net is and how to use it” it’s taken too long to get to where we are, I was fortunate that when the internet was just coming on stream I could afford it and my weans were able to teach me, had I not been able to afford it…
The huns dying is a perfect example of the msm picking and choosing what they tell joe public, need I say more.
HH

For my sins I will listen to SSB tonight, for why I can’t tell you, it’s not as if I need the info, the laugh is good from time to time but it infuriates me more than it doesn’t. so why ? I am not a masochist, at least I don’t think I am, but being a Celtic supporter sometimes who the eff knows 🙂

,big packy

majoc talking about Swindon, the only 2 places ive delivered to there ,was the honda factory and I think it was w.h. smith in the town centre.hh.

As I said infuriated, the masonic powers just can’t admit the truth, it’s all about the two semi finals at hampden, ffs why just they can’t tell it like it is, the huns are the problem, always have been always will be………….
They weren’t scared to tell it like it was back in the day.
“”On the terracing at the Dalmornock end on Saturday there was congregated a gang, thousands strong, including the dregs and scourings of filthy slumdom, unwashed yahoos, jailbirds, night hawks, won’t-works, ‘burroo barnacles’, and pavement pirates, all, or nearly all, in the scarecrow stage of verminous trampdom. This ragged army of insantitary pests was lavishly provided with orange and blue remnants, and these were flaunted in challenge as the football tide flowed this way or that. Practically with out cessation for ninety minutes or more, the vagabond scum kept up a strident howl of the ‘Boyne Water’ chorus. Nothing so designedly provoking, so maliciously insulting, or so beastially ignorant has ever been witnessed even in the wildest exhibitions of Glasgow Orange bigotry…..Blatantly filthy language of the lowest criminal type assailed the shocked ears of decent onlookers. There was no getting away from it, chanted as it was by thousands of voices in bedlamite yells. The stentorian use of filthy language is a crime against the law of the land. Policemen lined the track and listened to the hooligan uproar, yet nothing was done to stop it. The scandal was renewed with increased violence in London Road after the match. Is it possible the blue mob can do just anything and get away with it? Prompt official steps were taken to suppress and prosecute the green brake-club lads who dared to sing ‘The Dear Little Shamrock’ in Paisley Road. Yet thousands of foul-mouthed and blasphemous Orange ruffians are free to run amok over the East End of Glasgow. How do you account for it?”

That’s what I call telling it like it is 🙂
