Euro Lesson’s

I thought Glasgow Celtic played well in the first half last night. Didnt concede in the first 20 mins ( the golden rule ) , had an out ball and it seemed a plan . We were doing fine , ahead via a well taken pounce on a weak defender by Odsonne. But the half time instructions by the opposition coach changed the game in his teams favour . When his side got the ball wide his men were ordered to attack the box in numbers . They listened , they followed instruction , they won. They were not a million miles better at all and the gulf in class wasnt huge . Home advantage helped them a lot and their plan worked . Should give them a sterner  test  in Glasgow  .

One word on the opponents though , fair play to them for giving their Israeli striker the platform . That faith is being repaid bigtime ( 7 in 6 so far in Europe ). For a team with money he could easily have been pushed down the pecking order maybe for someone from a “ sexier “ nation . Pat on the back .

I was really looking forward to the Pool away to Napoli and I was not disappointed despite only a solo goal . Its nice having no skin in the game knowing its going to be good although most of us Im sure would want one team to win more than the other , if even by a little .

I also on these pages just last week tipped the Pool for the title and wanted to see their mettle tested against opponents they were not soo comfortable with .

Add into the mix the passionate crowd ,,,Napolis fluid attacking play honed by now Chelski boss Sarri  and you had a thigh rubber . LIke I say , for the purist , she didn’t disappoint.

The entire English media are united in stating the EPLs best defender is Virgil and  one lapse of concentration from him cost his team all three points in the final minute of time last night .

Now rather than an experienced defender , Virgil has hand selected Gomez as his partner so as he can mould and direct his play , and not be victim to the hard wired responses to situations of the other defenders he had to choose from . Its clever and its working by and large , but hinges on Virgils decision making and communication .

In the last minute he was dragged out to the wing , the decision that would cost them . The ball in was perfect but I posit if Gomez had went to the wing and left Virgil in the middle , not the other way about , his pace and leg reach would have probably stopped that ball reaching the scorer . Its a mute point and we will never know but Virgil will surely think strongly about staying right in front of his precious goal mouth and keeper than shepherd anyone out towards the by line .

He is very very good , but that was a rookie mistake sorry . Better to get it out of the way in the groups though.

The good news for the Pool is they looked great until Kieta went off and it took a mistake and perfect pounce on that to undo them . That should be comforting as this team is nowhere near peaked yet and should keep learning . They are on the right track . No doubt about it .

Anyway to the blue half of Manchester on their Euro escapades , and it wasnt all smooth sailing despite the 3 points being bagged by Manchesscity .

Afterwards we heard the words I want to focus on ,,,

Pep said reaching the quarter finals would be good enough and he’s not sure if they could win it .

The owners said they wanted a historic quadruple 2 years ago .

Right back Walker said in August  Pep and team are aiming for the quadruple .

Now after a defeat to Lyon and a near defeat to Naggelsman’s Hoffenheim he has changed his tune .  And also it was an old hand that pulled him out of a hole , 32 year old Silva who ran the most of any City player and will be jaded for Sundays big game no doubt .

And then Pep refused to discuss the ref as he has a suspended sentence over him for abusing a ref after a game. The top dog is talking about refs now also . Thats a sign hes either feeling pressure or he is actually aware that the refs suck . If its the latter as a person with a lot of sway in world football he should speak up on behalf on the entire sport and become and ambassador for better if you will . Is he ?

Yeah right . Hes feeling the heat. If the league alone was enough then he would not have got the job as he wasnt needed, they were already there . Same as Bayern where he didnt deliver the target as it was only the big one he was tasked with.

The fans though could well be the swaying factor,,,if they dont win the big cup but are playing well and lift the title I expect the fans would be happy with that , I dont see why personally.

The owners might hesitate to question him if everyone else is happy but at some stage that must stop and they should ask “ when are you giving us the star above the badge ? “

He is downplaying expectations clearly and some might think that is right , but I would say the best coach in the world ( apparently ) with a hell of a squad should be talking up his boys and aiming at their first star publicly .

That “ Im the Man ! “ factor  is usually the difference at elite levels of most sports if not all .

Maybe thats why Im not soo keen on him . Big them up Pep and you will have a better chance !

So both the above meet this Sunday at Anfield in what truly meets the definition of thigh rubber .

Jurgen has came out on top recently and I expect it to continue . Liverpool will want a win in this little series of three fast games having got the draw and tasted defeat . And at home , they will go for the throat . Jaded City wont cope with the system and the Kopites. Salah wouldnt chose this game to spring back into goal scoring mode would he ?

Defeat could see Pep start to lose a grip of his lifeline , the title . I know which one of the 2 managers I would rather have for my team .

Speaking of 2 men , fellow fans of combat sports dare not miss this Saturdays Las Vegas showdown .

Daegestans undefeated ground and pound beast Khabib will finally get the shot he has sought for years although he may not have chose the wisest route . Calling out Mc Gregor didnt work as Conor had other fish to fry that would land a  much bigger payday , so “ the mad rat “ made it personal by finding Conors boy , and giving him a slap with some taunting and throwing the video up for the world to see . It worked and now he has his man where he wants he , or so he says . After running his mouth very loudly the mad rat went suspiciously quiet when faced the one he was calling for . A bit pale also . Im thinking hes not really ready for the “ show “  when it begins and Mac tends to conduct the show rather than dance to its tune .

Prediction,,,devastating early knockout  for the Dubliner . Looks pissed he does. Wouldnt wanna be yer man I’ll tell ya .

As the oul sayin goes ,,,

Its not the Dub in the fight , but the fight in the Daeg !

Haw,Mahe. I’m just off a few hard shifts and could do wi some kip.

How’s that supposed to happen while you give me recurring nightmares of you rubbing your thighs?

Took me years to get over Vic Reeves, ffs.

I gather you fancy Liverpool to win the title, and maybe even Big Ears?

Thought Hendry played well last night and Mulumbu. Under no circumstances can it be expected for James Forrest to defend. This shows the paucity in our squad and style of play. Yes we were not very adventurous for a change but the same old problems still very much evident. Especially susceptible to the high diagonal ball over the full back. Maybe the early away goal was too much of a shock to us.

How can you be a sentinel Celt when you go to bed during the day, who guards the guards when the guards go to sleep? I read Margaret McGills list of loans and transfers with interest because I said to my son exactly the same this morning. A £60 mill. footballing department that provides the rest of the SPFL with much of its better players and yet… A back line of experienced International players could not defend a nothing ball into the box last night. We could not do to Red Bull what St. Johnston, Kilmarnock, Hearts etc. did to us. The question is, are we getting value for money….

You must have cribbed the mails between me and Mahe over what to name the site-that was the reason why we chose as we did!

Aye,sleeping during the day isn’t easy,I can tell you. Never had any problems doing it when I wasn’t supposed to…

No we are not getting value particularly in defence. I confess that I didn’t expect Mahe to go with the topic of the game today, and I was working on a brutal summing up of our playing squad. I’m still gonna do it though.

Because, the ones who are playing just now are not playing remotely near their best, and there are too many on the books who do not give a damn for that shirt.

You think of the players who are constantly injured, bad luck my arse. Bad luck we signed them, the shiftless basturts. Honestly,I’d be as much use in the shirt as a good dozen of our squad. Actually,I’d be more use, because at least I’d be willing to ducking play.

You must be “wild thing” because I think I love you, he he. I look forward to your summation, but please don’t let on to Ralph or Desi because they think I’m away on holiday.

I must be honest because I was stunned when I read the figures on the playing squad costs. I wont go into the last window because its far to depressing. How Brendan must be feeling watching the latest episode in the Celtic away story. Sad to say it, but a major rethink on the management and the playing squad must be on the cards, as for our self proclaimed Director of football, that is where the rethink should begin.

“playing for the jersey’s” those were the days my friend, days that might never return, I would settle for players who show committment and are robust enough to show courage and fight, in our much loved colours.

majoc, I have an inkling of who you are and I wish you and yours well and good health, sleep well, re-energise and no doubt we shall speak again.

Can’t stand any of the EPL or english clubs and media, their condesending attitude towards the rest of the game, esp scottish football does it for me.
I also saw the list Mag’s put up, incredible amount of money spent for very little return, especially when compared to the likes of Ajax, something needs to change, we are spending circa £3mill a season on the youth academy for virtually no return, unless you class supplying the rest of scottish football with near developed players for free, charity yet they hate us, there you go.
So what is our problem at youth level, I wish I knew, first thing I would do is recruit coaches from Spain and possibly Germany and France, they seem to have it sussed, but unless we address the refereeing in scotland where our club are refereed differently, footballers in scotland with us will never flourish, sad really.
As we know our suits are only concerened about money, they love to hoard it and spend as little as possible, maybes as many has suggested Pedro isny happy with the cash Brendan has spent so far, I personally don’t think we have gotten bang for our buck, maybes he has been told, who knows we can only guess, maybes Pedro is looking at the likes of Steve Clarke and thinking of the millions more he could have in the bank, again who knows, not that I am advocating SC for the job, he has already said he wasn’t prepared to put his family through the shite if he took the job, again how sad in 2018 it’s this way and getting worse if anything.
Anyways, no matter what we write, what we say or what we think, it will change nothing, the decisions will be taken from above and we will just have to suck it up.
Also our scouting is lax to say the least, a few years back when we scouted the likes of VvD, Vic Wanyamma John Park got the kudos for this when if fact it was a bloke called Neil McGuinness who scouted them, maybes give him a bell again.
Whatever it needs upped big time, the team who done us last night cost less than ours did, their scouts maybes could do a job, but something needs changed, again no bang for the buck.
Things to do, Laters.

In most walks of like it is an advantage to be able to “read between the lines”.
Especially with regards Celtic PLC. They don´t wish to communicate and for obvious
reasons. They are fundamentally salesmen and salesmen tell lies. Anyone who thinks
differently is so naieve their opinion should be instantly dismissed.

Celtic PLC sell football matches and football players and anything that is associated
with those. Whether they are any good at it is not a part of this post. We are confronted
with the old sales quandry Quality or Quantity. Quality over quantity or vise versa or
a slight compromise with the model.

If a football manager doesn´t rate a player and does not see him as part of his long term
planning then he has to be shrewd as most players have a value. A financial value that may
or may not be realised and the value that a non discarded players ability will bring on
the pitch. Clearly a player that thinks his career is advancing will more likely play
better and therefore attract a higher worth. Therefore it is vitaly important that the
employee sees career advancement or at the very least some financial security.

So this is where the football department must be highly coordinated with the executive.
So lots of communication and agreements.

Say for example a player doesn´t rate a player but the executive will always see that
player as an investment.

Where is the cut off point for that player between those two divides of the executive
and football department ?

Say a player goes out on loan (there are quite a few reasons for this) and he returns.
He returns a better player but he still isn´t first team squad material then we are
patient with him until his contract runs out or we can punt him.

Same goes with youth players … lets not go there.

So to just put all the blame onto BR with regards squad development is way over simplifying

Hail Hail

One glimpse of magic …from a longish ball… bang!

Then a period holding out with a sense of hope the win could be on. Although it was clear that we couldn’t get the ball to ‘stick’ up top and the mid could not roll or zip a sequence of passes consistently.

Resulting in a sense that they were growing in confidence after the intital shock of losing – a bad goal for them- but realisation that is the type of goal that great teams score against you away from home.

We didn’t or couldn’t capitalise on that incisive opening play.

As the First half drew to a close … and it seemed to take for ever…I mentioned to a neighbour that it felt like ’89 Cup Final.

That We should be so lucky…

We were always going to have to come out for 2nd half. Yes, i know that sounds like a smart arsed jibe. Hindsight kinda makes that easy in the mornign after.

But no… it was coming. Too many misplaced passes forcing all the pressure back onto defence and risking an unforced error or a touch of brilliance to level. When the dam was hit, it actually burst. That is not unusual in Celtic teams away form home.

It was good to see some attempt at variation and the longer direct ball already paid one dividend… however, our strikers cannot make the ball stick, on the odd occasion it actually reached them.

Salzburg aren’t world beaters and we all knew it would be tough to get any result.

The sad thing is that last night proved beyond any doubt that our team are not improving.

3rd season of Brendan’s reign and we seem to be stagnant…or worse.

Who thinks we can play our way out of this, even if we do qualify from this section can this group of players kick-on?

Our group of players cannot pass and move with intent. Consistently!

Our players collectively should add up to 12/13 or 14 on a great day. We are seldom achieving 8/10.

Mulumbu was a shining light… until that faded.

maybe the solution is for the support to align itself with the PLC with regards ambition. A clean sweep of domestic trophies two seasons in a row is the maximum we can achieve. Just accept it. We spend six times more than our competitors to get there. Celtic customers pay EPL prices for an increased chance to wallow in domestic glory, lets stop conning the fans by using European football as an incentive to buy Season Tickets.

This current PLC has no interest in European glory whatsoever. It´s a pipe dream and unobtainable. If Dermot Desmond, Peter Lawwell and Brian Quinn can decide to go on the slow road after Seville then why would that change anytime soon ? Nobody in the PLC is interested in European football the risk involved is far too much for them.

We can milk the glory of the Lisbon Lions for another 50 years. What´s not to like

We are the ying to Rangers yang. Nothing more nothing less … which takes me back to my very post on CQN

Any Celtic fan who cannot see that is mentally retarded and I do feel sorry for them. That´s just the kinda guy I am 🙂

No what we are witnessing we have seen under EVERY manager that works under Peter Lawwell. We are now at this point again.

There will be no significant January signings as Brendan will be gone.

There will be a summer “splash” for the new manager.

That Mulumbu and Hendry were our best players last night signals that those that know Brendan longer do not seem to be convinced any more.

I wonder why ??

Genuine Question: (Not directed at you SES)

Why can few Celtic fans recognise this well established cycle ?

The PLC have their groupies onside already, the amount of posts that are happy with just wining in scotland is quite shocking, brainwashed, thing is try and tell them and you are anti Celtic, the mind boggles.
The likes of DD is happy to sit things out in the hope of better exposure and more TV income, I honestly thot that him and a couple of his board would have done more to achieve this but hey ho, I was wrong, they could have bought a club down south, they should have bought a club down south and who knows, we could be in among the big boys, I know people say that it goes against the ethos of the club, I have news for them, that disappeared over 100 years ago, money men soon knew that milking the support was as easy as, they are still carrying on that milking tradition today.
Maybes you are inclined to feel sorry for them, me, naw, they deserve all they get 🙂

October 5, 2018 2:23 pm

Hi Lads,
some great posts today . I thought Henry was decent but badly at fault for one goal last night , their first I believe. Long diagonal.
We were brave playing two up front , very few do in Europe , and it was clearly to make the out ball stick to relieve pressure but it failed to stick up top most times . Both strikers faded and looked very tired about two thirds through.
Couldnt help thinking wheres our Israeli ? Theirs was decent enough . An Israeli striker sounds like a Celtic signing not some rich team . They realised we were not going to counter at pace anymore after half time and decided flood forward in attack it will be ok and it was . Easy enough tactics tbh.
More when Fionnuala naps. 🙂

The academy is a source of frustration rather than talent.

The exceptions prove the rule.

Are they being developed to handle highly intensive European games…

100% we need to go to the continent and trade up on our coaching model. Invest in a quality leader and backup coaching staff.

When Brendan gets the 10 (22? Surely) in a row monkey off our back.

We must stop and think about a complete restructure.

One of these days I’m going to state a number of reasons why I think he has taken the decisions he has at times and ask him to prove me wrong. Itmight be tomorrow if I finish work in time

I’m fed up with going to work to support my team, but I sadly stay too far away to contribute. Others drive delivery for a pizza firm as overtime to buy their tickets, most dip and hope. Just ask how most working class guys can afford the ST and the associated costs, and all we want is to see our investment used well.

Instead it’s Lawwelled

Where’s the fucking money,ya prick? And no,I’ve not been drinking,I’ve been in all day waiting for a plumber who has kindly sorted my problem. I don’t deal with gas or water, everything else is near enough and good enough

Thought Hendry looked ok in spells but will take more than his share of blame. Unfair.
A young player deserves to learn beside experienced players at the top of their game.
He is being placed in the eye of a storm in Euro games.
My heart sank ( it was my erse that collapsed ..ok:) when the diagonal ball dropped over Mikel’s shoulder for the first goal.. my view is that ball should have been 1. Prevented from coming in at that angle and 2. Mick should have cleared it out or AWAY. What happened next is hard to prevent without committing a foul/penalty. It can be done, but usually by top level defenders. Just how I saw it.

The Other open-play goal he is being blamed for, got in from their left, missed by Mick, probably Jamesy, definitely by Dedryck … before the young lad was expected to intervene.

Don’t get me wrong Hendry has a lot to learn, but some of the stuff I listened to last night in pub about him was squimingly awfy…

The weakness begins mainly in midfield, and it’s mainly down our right.. left isn’t without blame. Where is the cover and positional discipline when we are without the ball. Mainly because our mid have given it away in the first place!

The pressure on Celts defences is always higher due to our traditions of demanding attack! Attack! Style of fitba. We know this and make allowances. Too many of our mid cannot tackle or at least track and cover properly. Maybe they can but it’s not evident enough when it really matters.

I don’t think big Hendry is being given a fair crack of the be fair, more than a few bhoys have mentioned this already.

Get the more senior players fit or get them tay!!

The players under Ronny were disillusioned. Disillusioned by the entire club. A no name non entity brought in on the cheap to remove Neil Lennon (any manager with the measure of them will be removed eventually).

So after the very costly Tony Mowbary experiment on a par with the VERY VERY costly dream team the PLC they really are not very good at this are they those two appointments cost us close on 30m hire Brendan Rodgers. The Players become emboldened to the extent that we get the invincible´s and retain a treble. Ask any Lisbon Lion that three years ago and he´d tell you that to do so is impossible.

Then the wheels come off as they did with MON, WGS, TM – never had wheels to begin with, NL and now BR

Promises broken, Strategy squashed, that old familiar greedy parasitic stench hangs over the air again.

After Ronny, the players were jumping through hoops (love that word) for Brendan, but now seem to be overly tired, so many games and Internationals, add a wee bit of discontent into the mix and well, they the team need to be refreshed, players who don’t wish to remain must get punted and new players added, every player has to feel that his position is not a given, no player wants not to play, so competition is needed.

Twice we scored last night and that was with three attacks in the entire game. We are hampered by the fact that Griffiths isn´t fit (blowing bubbles out of his arse last night) and Eduardo is too raw. We were missing Scott Brown and a centre back. Mulumbu , Hendry, Edoardo, Morgan have how much competitive European experience ? None ?
zero ? How well are Salzburg playing at the moment ?

Really .. Gamboa has played about 8 games this year including the world cup
Rogic has yet to play 90 minutes. I see that as being more about the player than the number of games and I see that as being more concerning. How long are we going to tolerate a player that can only play for 60 minutes ?
Lustig we have known about for a long time. (see Gamboa)
Boyata has hardly put a foot wrong when you see who he is playing with.

I am more concerned about the tiredness evident in Brown, Tierney, McGregor, Forrest …. players who feel they owe Brendan something.

Thought that and should have realised by your link. Since the wee man from Croy left there seems to me to be a total disconnect between the support and the board. Fergus was a shrewd fella and he appointed a DOF. Not saying that he chose the right guy, but I feel that, that is what needs to happen. Accountants count money in and out and are qualified to do so. Set a total football budget and leave it to men who know football, his total responsibility, not an accountant.

I, well there you have it in a nutshell in your answer to Saltires, the players brought in are not good enough to be trusted to push for a place in the team. Add players who were brought in but were substandard and a development squad that is developing players who will not feature in the first team. To me it wasn’t so much the players that Lawwell failed to deliver in the summer but the players brought in over the past couple of years that don’t get a game, because they cannot be trusted to play for our first team, sub-standard despite costing a lot of money. Commper, Kouassi (who I rated but never plays), Sumo. who only plays part time, I could go on but my heid is bursting just thinking about it.. 😉

In the week where we were told that Neil Doncaster ‘both strong and independent.’It’s beginning to look like that promised Generation of Domination might be a bit of a lofty tale from a barra boy type attempting to palm off some dodgy wares.
The reality is of course is that the PLC that gave us Tony Mowbray, recruited the Rookie Neil Lennon and then ‘lost’ him, hired
the unfortunate Ronny Delia are the same ones that have completely ballsed up the whole Sevco saga.

This is the Sevco, with the convicted criminal at the helm. The Club with 54 Titles that we were asked to accept as rivals and forget years of institutionalised cheating and evasion of liabilities.

What next?

Will we be told that Dave King is a misunderstood businessman who loves the game? Maybe ‘Sir’ David Murray is actually an entrepreneur who was fooled by a charlatan and could still bring something to football?

This whole mess is a train crash in slow motion. Peter Lawwell is not fit for purpose. His goal is to manipulate the Balance Sheet to make the numbers look right. He will do whatever it takes to make money for himself and the PLC. His objectives are not the objectives of the Celtic Supporter. He was made to look like a plonker by the SPFL Board this week and hence the ridiculous character reference for Neil Doncaster.

How stupid do they think the average Celtic Supporter is?

How must the players feel when the best players are sold and replaced by below par replacements? It must be galling to be expected to deliver Trebles and compete in Europe while the greed of the PLC cannibalises the playing squad. In my experience the attitude of employees in any business is enhanced by the competence and attitude at the top. The arrogance and incompetence of our PLC is astonishing. This defect affects every part of the club, this has become very evident over the last 18 months on the field of play.

Whatever tactical mistakes Brendan Rodgers has made there is something rotten at the core of Celtic PLC.

Our player recruitment has been questionable for years, this has been debated at length and the common denominator in this farce is Mr Lawwell.

Like many of the players, I’ve lost faith in Celtic. Celtic are a brand like any other business run by egotistical businessmen. The businessmen at Celtic have failed us. They only take from us. Senior Scottish Football is built on a business model of sectarianism and bigotry. Bragging rights mean everything and that means plenty of humble pie in the future as our corrupt incompetents continue to sell the family silver to line their own pockets.

Celtic should be at a historic high right now and the PLC should have clearly vindicated past players and managers by asserting that the cheating that was allowed to happen was wrong. They failed to do so and everyone knows (including the players) that any talk of Celtic being a Family is all hot air. Anyone who points to the good wonderful work done by the Foundation should consider the point that this is merely false altruism encouraged to hide the true motivations of the Gombeen Men in the Board Room. It creates a feel good factor and camouflages the jiggery-pokery behind the Confidentiality Clauses.

It’s sometimes nice to be able to air my views in public but for the most part it’s very sad to watch Mr Desmond and Mr Lawwell’s greed mislead well intentioned and reasonable folk, as we descend further into mediocrity and completely lose contact with any of our unique identity.

Just imagine what Celtic could be without these parasites?

I was told a story just after Brendan joined us, no idea if it’s true, yer man who told me was 100% it was.
Brendan had heard of the goings on with some of the players under Ronnie, the Commons debacle and Charlie Mulgrew walking off the pitch, story I was told was Brendan summoned Broonie down to england and read him the riot act, either shape up and tell the rest to do the same or they are gone, interesting that Commons and Charlie didn’t hang around, Commons was fit most of BR first season, he wasn’t wanted.
As I said just a story but it kinda rings true, problem is there is other factors at work just now, things that BR has no control over, the dissolusionment that has been mentioned has weedeled it’s way in everywhere and it’s affecting everyone at the club, sad really cos we can’t do a feckin thing about it.

Yep, Rodgers had a meal with Scott and they apparently sorted things out.
This looks like a case of watching the locomotive crash and not being able to stop it.
Very sad but unfortunately inevitable…

the exiled tim, just in from walking duties, could there be a problem in the dressing room, don’t know but want to know, how do we go from the heights of the last couple of seasons to this, I just cant get my head around it, have heard from my Liverpool connections that Brendan had a fall out with gerrard and a really nasty fall out with Carragher, now it might be a load of baloney don’t know. but something is not right at my club.hh.
