3 Goodun’s and a wannabe Midas
Well blow me down but old Engerland has actually went and produced a couple of good uns. Their biannual announcement of impending victory at whatever tournament is about to start may actually have a bit of merit this next time or two . The law of averages said it had to happen at some stage , but there looks to be a bit more involved here , dedication for a start , and a bit of humility which I hope catches on over there .
I believe its acknowledged that the class of 92 were not used as much or as well as they should have been by their national setup . Scholes is probably the most gifted English midfielder of the last 30 years , yet time and again was not used correctly and thus never shone internationally , and he had the quality to .
At club level he had fantastic movement around him with plenty pace to run into empty spaces for Scholes to hit . England seen him in a static setup with a Shearer that preferred a cross , and didnt work space at all . Later Rooney preferred to come deep , right into the space Paul would be asked to play in . They misused the best they had . Surprise surprise.
Students of the beautiful game will not be surprised though to see decent numbers of native talent emerging by dint of being surrounded by some of the worlds best in their domestic league , and it should rub off after a while in fairness.
The league could probably claim to have some of the best coaches / managers also and this cannot be understated as a help not hindrance .
Thus the English have in their arsenal two of the best attackers about right now .
Harry Kane is to me the player Alan Shearer could have been , if he had went abroad and been properly coached . Kane is the real deal , hitting great numbers season after season now , and is improving . For once I actually believe the hype around this guy is justified , I just cant see him blowing his talent ala Gazza , or being content to be a local big shot ala Shearer .
He could honestly grace probably any team .
Raheem Sterling looked like a petulant wee lip when I first saw him , and acting a big shot to Brendan on the training ground giving it back never helped my image of him . His leaving of a Pool team that are on the rise was strange and brought him even more grief . None of these things have held him back at all as he has emerged as one of the best attackers going and shows little sign of stopping improving . If anything he looks destined to surpass Harry in terms of silverware and caps and looks the likeliest of the two to try his hand abroad .
The guy regarded as the best manager around has him an automatic choice and key player , high praise indeed .
Gareth Southgate ,, he has brought back the waistcoat single handedly and that alone will get him a knighthood ( stick as much as youve got to spare on him kneeling one day mark my words ).
Hes never really stood out which I guess is a good thing and had a solid if not spectacular career . But it really does look as if he has something between the ears when it comes to reading the game and setting his team up .
His philosophy of setting up the best team , not the best individuals is to be admired ,, and he has already been bringing in changes to a team that done very well for him,, which shows a strong spine and some conviction . Defenders do tend to make managers more regular having read the game more than the average player , and its showing through . Being linked with the job at Old Trafford is only further validation of an impressive start to his management career . I expect we shall see a lot more of his name in the future .
The lessons we as fans of the sport should take away here are that things are cyclical . It would have been hard to see it going soo well the day Big Sam got sacked after a solo outing ,, certainly no one was saying to me Im telling you what Mahe watch the English in a few years there are looking good . The right set of circumstances came about ,, and they now have three people ( at least ) at the top of their game , giving it all for the team . I can see another semi final ahead .
Another lesson is the right man , right time , right place factor . It cannot be underestimated , and I have actually found myself in that position in real life when the people hiring you cant believe their luck , and youre thinking was the last guy that crap as just by doing the job youre paid to do I look great and theyre fawning over me . Well maybe you are anyway . Theres no guide to picking the right guy , or stereotype you could copy , it just happens , and when it does you jump aboard and ride the train as far as its going .
That was Brendan not long ago , Midas , just like we called Martin all those years ago .
It was inevitable things were gonna slow down at some stage ,, he couldnt just keep on the rise forever . No one can or does . At some stage the ascension must level out , and it has .
Thats its came at a time of a mismatched squad needing surgery isnt lost on everyone . But make no mistake he has earned our loyalty and our trust . And he will get it .
Someone who might actually be fancying themselves as another Midas is young Stevie Gee. He is in the position , at the moment , to think he is on track for a winning debut to help that notion along .
Speaking of cyclical it would have been hard to imagine being in a title race with them when looking back , but thats were we are .
Now yes he’s in a decent spot , and theres even been talk of “ got Brendan on the run “ ffs.
He needed help to stay in touch and would be down the leagues top scorer if the suits running the farce had any cajones . Two veterans brought in are being lauded , they will love this last hurrah and the pay check that comes with it .
After Pedro anyone half decent was gonna look good , and even quarter decent would have done it .
However his team simply must stick the pace , they cant afford to drop points .
And that is why he should be looking at this next month of fixtures with trepidation .
If the footballing Gods were smiling upon them he would have four bottom half teams next with three of those at home , and then a medium size test to give a good gauge of things .
Sorry Stevie , no such luck. Its not an easy month coming up at all .
The Dons in a few weeks will be a huge test . Theres no doubt whatsoever Derek will want to show Jabba and King exactly what they missed out on and will probably never have due to their below the belt smear on him after turning down the hotseat .
A hostile Wednesday night game up at Pittodrie and all just to help affairs .
Eight days time see Killie host the Hun in another you will be doing well to get out with anything tie . Another nice wee hostile away trip on a hopefully freezing night . Plastic pitch leveler ? And those new signings , are you really going to throw them in up at Cowdenbeath ? Cant see it , why risk them , so they are hitting the ground against the teams around you , not ideal at all .
I reckon any pretentions of being Midas end for him and the fans within a month or thereabouts.
One things for sure though , they try to play the dirty ref card to help him out in those two ties against rivals , and all hell will break loose . He’s the ref down after the latest malarkey . Thats gotta irk .
Just one more wee reason I reckon he might slip up ( again ) and wont be arriving in March on our coattails .

Best of luck to Martin O Neill at his new job Forest. Maybe he will surprise a few. He will surely give it all for them just like he did as a player , and that turned out well didn’t it .
You’ll never walk alone Martin.
MAHE
I hope Martin will bring John Robertson and Steve Walford with him. They were always there in his years of success, and he knows he can rely on them.
They’re only four points off the play-offs,even after a miserable defeat by strugglers Reading. In that league,a short burst of form moves you well up the table as well as working wonders for the confidence.
They had two men sent off on Saturday, btw. One of them was Danny Fox. He was rank for us,so much so that I’d genuinely forgotten all about him
As for Kane,he needs a rest. He has been playing way too much football recently. His manager could wreck his career very shortly.
Majoc / Mahe
Harry Kane a bit like Mikael Lustig non stop football for club and country for last two years, it takes its toll on even footballers 🙂
Hadn’t realised Martin got the Forest job, terrific man manager who could lift Forest for next few months and maybe even a wee promotion through play offs
Mags McGill from previous articles cheers for the welcome
Beppe from yesterday on Raul enjoy reading others views, cheers
Is it just a coincidence that Paul Pogba has suddenly regained his form at the same time as refraining from entering the field of play looking like a cross between Eartha Kitt and Lady Gaga – perhaps Scott Sinclair should take ‘,heid’!
GOLD
I believe he draws his inspiration from a certain early Bob Dylan song.

HI MAHE, not a big fan of engerlund football too much hype, but good wishes to martin o neil at forrest ,as majoc said I hope he takes john and steve with him.hh.
I saw Forest play Chelsea in the cup a few days/weeks ago and thought Danny Fox played great as sweeper. In fact I even had to check wiki to confirm it was the same Danny Fox that was completely useless for us.
DUBAIBHOY
He couldn’t have swept the dressing rooms when he was with us. I think we made a profit on him, mind,so he’s probably got his own page in PL’s CV
I watch a lot less English football these days but I think Harry Kane is a decent player though I don’t see him playing outside the English league. He’s not got the game for that. Raheem Sterling has took his game up a notch and he is to be congratulated for that. He’s obviously learned to listen to what his coach is telling him and grew up a bit. That’s ok, we were all daft once – majoc still is!! What I will say is any team that plays Harry maguire is destined never to win anything and their semi final appearance was more due to an easy run than good players. A team winning major tournaments needs at least 8 top players and 3 that fit the system – not the other way round. Just my opinion though and it’s refreshing to have a chat about different topics whilst we are in hibernation. Cannot wait for Saturday to get back to paradise.
ATHINGOFBEAUTY
I’m nothing if not consistent(!)
Like you,I am not an admirer of Harry Maguire. He is to defence what Geoff Thomas was to midfield when Gareth Southgate was still playing.
Majoc.
….and here’s me thinking he was just a “slave to the rhythm”
Work all day, as men who know,
Wheels must turn to keep, to keep the flow,
Build on up, don’t break the chain,
Sparks will fly, when the whistle blows,…HH

You’re way too “down with the kids”,man. I was thinking more of Mahalia Jackson!
Not really the done thing to comment on posts from another site, but here’s a belter from MULLET&CO on CQN

Yaya Toure 1.5m in wages for 6 months?
Celtic are even on points with Rangers though we do have a game in hand.
If the bid for Ntcham is £14m plus a centre back I would take that today.
Forrest can go in the summer unless Liverpool want to go over £20m now.
So Burke, Bayo and Weah. Is Bayo an Amido Balde or a Pierre Van Hooijdonk? Will Weah play at all? Is Burke a replCement for Forrest?
Will we resist the inevitable bid for McGregor and is the Tierney saga really over?
Don’t ask me who we should go for but we badly need leaders and stability not a revolving door.
Getting Ntcham and 3 others off the wage bill would be significant.

Presumably he reckons our tea lady and PL’s secretary are ready for the step up.
How many times do we bemoan the moneymindedness of players chasing the big bucks, rather than titles? Comments like-you canny show off pound notes to your grandkids the same way you can medals?
Yet here’s a Celtic supporter selling half our team with no idea how to replace them. I f…..g despair.
I hope that Yaya Toure does not arrive at Celtic as a player. However, there may be a non playing role for him at the club. Comparison of him to Defoe are spurious and only based upon age. Defoe has been a hired gun for a few seasons, relying on his previous reputation to score goals. He has four goals in one and a half to two seasons in the EPL. He is not a first pick for the club that owns his rights. He may do well in the SPL against the lower half teams of the SPL.
Y. Toure, on the other hand, has had an illustrious career for Man City and his country. He is now at a stage in his career when he wants to emphasise other activities off of the park. UNICEF and a variety of charity activities related to youth in his home country. His legs may not be gone but his priorities have shifted. His early release from Olmpiakos testify to that.
At City he was on around 220,000 GBP per week but took a cut to play for the Greeks. It is still a large chunk of change that he would expect. No, Celtic, as the Who said, “Don’t get fooled again!”
Use funds wisely and not on a vanity project. Remember Juninho? Freddie Ljundberg? Gravesen?
Rebus
I just have a horrible feeling we will see Duffer and Mc Manus being “forced” to step up the next time there’s a vacancy , and given the job due to ” having shown great promise ”
Yaya can yoyo off somewhere else. The cry was no defenders !
BigPacky, hope all good Sir. Week of rain forecast here then I’m hoping that’s the bad weather done.
Unfortunately Martin isn’t getting the gang back together. Another Forest hero Keano will be his assistant for 18months and then take up the reigns himself from what I gather. It’s a good fit , and I will check up on Forest now.
Hail Hail
Now is it a clean brexit or a dirty brexit?
Hi Rebus.
I am never against quality coming in to Celtic Park, no matter for how long. – Ya Ya is quality – personally on this occasion, I don’t think it will happen.
We all know how much the game has changed, no need to rehearse that again, however I believe our ability to attract top players, entertainers, box-office stars, whether on loan, or, on short-term contracts is vital and can be used as a valuable add-on to our signing strategy. The only proviso is that they contribute positively to the squad.
We must look short-term and long-term. This latest challenge from Ibrox is designed to be short-term, one, or, two seasons; that’s all they are looking at, at the moment.
We cannot afford to be too rigid in our choice of players and contracts – in future there will be a miscellany of arrangements. The secret is to stay strong and solvent as a club in order to take advantage of all opportunities. The squad may change markedly from year to year, so what? HH
So the plc are waiting until the brexit vote to announce the signing of McKenna! Slippier than an eel on an oil slick.
Other rumours include Brendan meeting McCarthy tomorrow.
Im hoping TeT is wrong on this fella,,who was the last one you called wrong?
I thought Loovens was a decent defender and remember most didn’t want Charlie Muldrew back !
Hail Hail
Mahe
Just this minute logged on, chores finished for an hour or so, the last one I got wrong, tis not easy that one 😉
I got Stefan Scepovic half wrong, he was banging in the goals in Spain at a higher level that we were playing, I was touting him on the blog for a while before he came to us, but for the life of me we didn’t use him properly imo, he kept making the runs and nobody was feeding him the ball, they just couldn’t see his runs, had they he would have scored for fun, he flopped when I thot he would do it, can’t think of one the opposite way round 😉
Can’t agree about Kane, don’t see the hype, Sterling is so so, and engerland wouldn’t have done anything at teh WC with a stiffer group, they are not a good team, just my humble opinion.
TeT, seems about a third of comments about the boy want him and say he will go on to better things,,about two thirds are saying no way.
Then Ncham,,,if we get offered 14 and a player he’s gone imo.
Hail Hail
MAHE/THE EXILEDTIM, was gonna say are we a buying or selling club, the exiled tim knows the answer I despair really I do,,the board knew from day one we need a experienced defender,. now we have scott McKenna nothing against the guy, but up against Valencia or any other good European outfit, sorry it does not equate.hh.
mahe
We have been conditioned into accepting 2nd rate players, just like everybody is now a fecking accountant, he is not worth this, punt him for this, we don’t want to end up the them’s, as if, it honestly does my head in.
Not a hope that Porto will offer us 14 mill, not in a month of sundays, paper talk to unsettle the boy and us.
Funny how all the superstars at the hun are never being touted for mega millions, Morelos excepted, that backfired on them as they had to give him an improved contract as a result, any player we are connected with I will not believe till the player is holding up the scarf, till then.
BP
We are both, buy cheap and sell hopefully for much profit, tis just the way it is, we are stuck in a backwater with nobody in charge of the game that can do a deal for the clubs, the sfa and the spfl are a joke, it’s all about having the blazer and the power, they are parasitic scum.
So true tet about Ntcham. Not a hope will we get close to £14m from anyone for him, never mind a team from a league like Portugal. If there was a bid anywhere near that amount he’d be gone by now. Of that I am certain.
ATOB
Porto will scour Sth America and pick up players for a relative song, they are in the biz of buying cheap and selling for a fortune, a bit like we aspire to, people keep saying that we can’t buy from that market, I disagree, the english can’t unless they meet a certain criteria, in scotland the precedent was set a few years ago when the hun was bringing in players that didn’t meet anything and they always got a licence, the sfa made a rod for their own back, yet we don’t scout there, crazy imo.
TET
I think Porto could use the Portuguese passport ploy to bring in Brazilians. Foreign Office wouldn’t allow Celtic to do the same.
Emu
When was the last time that a player in scotland was refused a licence ?
I honestly can’t recall one
TET
Porto brought over a lot of youngsters. They otherwise wouldn’t get a work permit to live and work in EU without Portuguese passports.
I can’t recall a player not getting a work permit though! I wondered about criteria. Thought they had to have played so many international games? I wondered how the new young bhoy Bayo qualified?
Emu
In england for sure, in scotland it’s a different set of rules, the huns a few years back were given licences for who ever they bought, the sfa can’t start refusing them now, the precedent has been set, this is why we should scout these countries.
The excuse was there wasn’t scottish players that were of the same standard etc, bullshit but there you go.
Emus, , they claim he’s a special talent that will improve the league and automatic permit.
The Ncham rumour looks to have started with the Sun,,,isn’t the Sun the rag PL sat down with for a I’m hard done by interview .
Usually see the Sun and say aye right but in this case ,,,
Too much money indeed but under ten , play , sell for 30 sounds like a Porto scheme.
Hail Hail
If some think that Celtic spending every penny they have….and more, will bring European success, then they are living in cloud-cuckoo land.
We have seen in graphic detail that administration and liquidation will not stop the Ibrox need to be top dogs. There are always those within the Scottish community willing to ‘burn money’ to keep them afloat.
Would there be similar queue of Celtic-minded millionaires lining up to do the same for us should we again fall on hard times? NO.
We have to stay honest, strong, solvent and realistic. We spend what we can afford – it works and will go on working.
The corner shops were wiped out by the high street shops – they were wiped out by the superstores – and now the internet wipes them out too. It’s evolution – it has happened in football. The European elite leave us far behind, any attempt to emulate them will kill us.
There are c650 European clubs – only 5% get into the CL group. We have managed this about three out of every five years – believe me that is European success for us – let’s get real.
To be ranked as a European pub team now is quite satisfactory for most tims.
As long as we beat the huns.
Aye does a child good to be denied
Thats what ye get for asking
Thats what you get for no askin
Nae rainbow withoot rain.
Gold , I wouldn’t disagree with any of that .
What I would like to hear or read is a plan , a direction. I know very little about my club of choice.
That is food for thought and it would be interesting just what a similar size club would hope to achieve short medium and long term.
Some goals I would like ,,
A homegrown 11
Complete revamp scouting ( would have said youth but seemingly addressed)
A lot more to charity especially local
Kerrydale free for events to good causes or Csc,s (they will make money on the bar and
food)
Celtic tv overhauled
An official app that’s relevant
Just tweaks really 😉
Personally, I believe as a Scottish club its ok to cheat, lie, steal and diddle everyone including the government out of £0.5bn
Whats the worst that can happen?
TV? Bar food? beads to the amphibians
Im talking Corporate tax, PAYE, bribes, EBT’s and Tore Andre flow with cash
Time you penny pinching shop steward aficionados got your act together.
Not to worry
Once they get liquidated it will be centuries before they hand our arse to us on a plate at the eboladrome. Or 6 years. Whatever comes first.
Mahe.
Maybe just tweaks as you say, however some important tweaks nevertheless.
If we could produce a home grown squad, I would be delighted – I don’t think it will happen, however it should be an underlying target – if you don’t have a target you can never hit it.
I know the amount of good work done by the Foundation – it is something to be proud of – could we do more, of course, and I hope we do.
Yes there needs to be an upgrade to Celtic TV. Such is the paucity of rewards from the likes of Sky & BT, would we ever miss them if we struck out on our own…I don’t think so. However we are ‘contracted in’ to the the SPFL model at the moment – who knows individual clubs may be set free in a Bosman-like deal in rhe future – free to market and sell their own rights to the highest bidder with no onerous contracts imposed on them.HH
