Kris is The Man

The one person who should have been delighted at Brendan’s departure for the Foxes is Filip Benkovic by way of already having made inroads into his new gaffers style of play .
And yesterday we seen the Antrim man rule out another loan spell at our club of choice for the Croat saying he has plans for him .
He needn’t have bothered ,,, the minute he joined them it was practically official Filip was heading down south .

It would be folly of Brendan not to have someone that knows his methods close by if possible and he should also I imagine find it comforting to see a familiar face at the start of his first full campaign at the helm of his new team .
So yesterday was just a formality really , confirming a known unknown .
Very few 21 year olds start for mid table Prem clubs without some previous experience of that league ,, so his managers backing will be key to adjusting to life against a better standard of player , sometimes frighteningly better .

The player himself though has already put in enough appearances to not only collect a league winners medal that is surely a formality , but his European exploits for the club will also help him.
We will look back and say yeah he did the job and was a good player ,, but now we face a gap that needs filled .
I had previously blogged how I thought we should do an Edouard with him and splurge big for us knowing that hes at the age were he will increase in price and improve on the field.
A good relationship with his parent club was key to that deal , as was any other manager in world football going there.

Finding young Master Ajer though has been quite a surprise indeed and how we could do with another diamond in the rough , but alas it was thanks to the much maligned Ronny who knew him , and not some great arm of the scouting department .
However Lee Congerton was announced as Head of Recruitment recently and this should be his priority and perhaps highest profile move , sourcing a new first choice central defender who prefers the right side of the back two.
For a fella that has taken flak in the past , this is one he will not be wanting to get wrong thats for sure , and I for one am hoping that means extra special attention to detail this time around .
The fact that the new guy “ should “ be here for at least the 2nd round of any qualifiers only adds to any pressure ,, but chances are it will be a skin of your teeth go with what weve got job ( Ajer and Bitton ) until last week of August EPL loan deal special .
Sometimes in this position we grab the best of the rest domestically which would be Mc Kenna probably but having signed a new improved contract will prove hard to get especially as he knows hes a stick on starter at his current club .
And the Dons would want a premium no doubt.

Lenny has the hotseat and will fancy staying in it so its in his best interest to start looking at the bigger picture . He seems to have realised what Im hinting at ,, that Kris is our defensive lynchpin for early season big games , and we need to start blooding him hard right now in anticipation hence hes been starting every game.
Although off injured early at the weekend , he is fine and is due to start against Spain for his national team this week which will be a stern test of just how far the kid has come .

A heavy defeat would be bad for his morale Im guessing and a great performance would catch the eye of many who would pray upon us . God forbid !

So expect that young man to start every game remaining , to be the one Lenny is yelling instructions to , and to lead us into Europe next season at the back.
The 20 year old didnt ask for and probably didnt expect to be our mainstay defender at this stage , but stranger things have happened and we just all have to get behind the lad and give him our backing . The very last thing we should do is judge him harshly .
Thats the easy decision for Neil ,, the bigger one is his partner .
To go with what he knows ie Bitton or to throw a new signing in beside Kris.
Big call .

Kris is surely a stick-on for Young Player of the Year?

Who even knew the clubs had a meeting on Monday re Strict Liability?

HI MAHE, some interesting points there, but to be honest the thought of going into Europe with ajer and bitton as our defensive paring frightens the life out of me, don’t get me wrong both good players, especially Kris brilliant going forward but tends to give the ball away too much,, I just hope and pray Brendan does not come in for Kieran or calmac with a wad of cash.hh.

Garry

Hi Mahe, of all the centre backs you mentioned in your article, Filip Benkovic is the only one I rate. I am not a fan of Ajer or Bitton as centre halves. McKenna I do not rate at all. I think that Simunovic could be the only decent centre half left on our books, come summer. Unfortunately, he is very prone to injuries. Therefore, I think we need to sign two new centre halves for next season.
What is Efe Ambrose doing? ????

Lenny will have a couple of CB’s in mind no doubts, Kris is not a CB neither is Bitton so for sure we need another couple.
The champions for all these years and we are thinking about playing a wean and a player no long back from a year out neither of who are CB’s in the CL qualifiers, you would think that the club didn’t give a flying feck about the CL.
Thinks to do.

Monti

Morning Bhoys,
Not fully convinced about Kris Ajer as a central defender, i think he is soft, lacks real aggression & at times get’s caught on the wrong side of his opponent.
He does have decent footwork & the ability to carry the ball, however he tends to get it nicked of him in the opposition half, puting pressure on our defence due to him being out of position.
Cheap option for me, never a Lex Baillie.

Margaret McGill,
You need to calm down a bit & listen to other posters views, don’t mean to be rude but you come across as an angry wee woman?

Afore I forget, how could I, all the talk of Buying players in the window should be put out of your heads, you will only be disappointed, we will be bringing in freebies or players that can be gotten for very little, the downsizing is well and truly on.

Monti

Hi Garry,
Do you not think Scott McKenna is exactly what we need, a no nonsense central defender?
At his age & from what i’ve seen of him, he would be a priority signing for me.
The only two defenders i rate at Celtic ae Benkovic & Tierney…..
Just saying i think McKenna would be a good signing!

Garry

Monti
Naw mate. Don’t see it in McKenna like others do. Lumpus Woodus player. Was watching him closely at the match a fortnight ago. He came over to in front of me in North Stand. He is a huge lump o a laddie right enough. No ma type though ?

MONTI

MAGS is,honestly,a bloke. And a gentleman. The two of you in person would get on like a house on fire,I reckon.

He does though have very strong opinions. I thought I disliked the board, this fella would have me as a PL cheerleader by comparison!

HH

The Gombeen Man

I agree with TET.

The trajectory is downsizing. I believe that was a major factor in Brendan’s long running fall out with Lawwell.

The Lawwell Loyalists are ruthless and will spin any old nonsense to protect Peter’s interests.
Sevco and Lenny practically guarantee a full house. There is nothing to be gained in changing course, only adverse risk.

Brendan represented a risk. That’s why Pedro frustrated him and ultimately Brendan saw that Celtic are about one thing. The Old Firm. There is no point in pushing on and leaving Sevco too far behind. That’ll detract from the lustre of the product… Europe is a welcome bonus for turning up and collecting bonuses if we struggle through.

It’s even rumoured that our biggest signing will be John Park.

It’s more likely that we’ll see some of the £9m spent on a bronze statue of PL on The Celtic Way, than on the team.

Same old confusion and lack of direction that we’d become accustomed to under Lawwell. Mowbray, Lennon as a rookie and Ronny etc…

Of course this time, it’ll be spun as Brendan’s fault, not just MoN’s.

Things aren’t changing. Moneyball and downsizing are the order of the day…and the ‘mugs’ will cough up.

HH

THEEXILEDTIM

PL,is worried about the possibility of falling crowds,so is salting away cash to cover the shortfall. Or,alternatively,PL knows that if we continue to win the league and get to that elusive ten,the crowds will continue to be healthy. Or even,PL cannot sanction spending until a new manager is in place who has had time to assess the side and advise on which areas of the team need spending on.

Three singles, three doubles and a treble for me,a nice wee Patent. And the only winner is The Bonus King.

Garry

TET
We are downsizing to the level of that bunch of new huns that play in that glorified Victorian lavvy doon Ibrox Edmiston Drive.
Parochial wee club our board are turning us into. Have given my ticket for next Sunday away. Cannae stomach it.

GARRY

If you get time aside from your 12-hour nights, any chance of finishing the opus on Amsterdam?

GARRY

Have you given it away yet? Mick The Drammer would bite your arm off for it,as a bunch of them are planning a weekend of it.

M
Yip, two of them imo, the new manager bit I don’t agree with, he will be spreading his options.
Lenny will be the new boss come what may, the ten is the Holy Grail sad as it is, no need for spends, just enough to get to the ten will be the order of the day.
HH

Garry

You hacking my phone? ?
The drammer fae Carnoustie is using it. ???

Aye Mick, will give, “When it’s Spring again we’ll Sing Again 2-1 in Amsterdam.” A final go.

GARRY

Good lad! He phoned me a few weeks ago, asked if I would mail round a few likely candidates. You weren’t one of them as I thought you would be going anyway!

GARRY

I’m surprised you can remember any of it at all-a bit like Keith Richards’ autobiography!!!

Garry

Mick phoned me on Tuesday, saying he was coming through. I have been to most of our games this season home and away. Don’t mind missing the odd game, if it makes a friend happy. ACGR is one of the best

Damn right,mucker!!!

Monti

Why would he call himself Margaret ffs?

TGM~Garry
I asked the other day what the answer was, we are hoarding money, for a team playing is scotland that’s unbelievable, we are not backing the managers to the extent we should be, aye the Pedro groupies will point to teh seven leagues and silver baubles in a row, superb by any thought of the imagination, but we continually downsize to the level of just above the rest, there is no ambition to stride ahead, that idea was firmly put in it’s box after we beat Barca, our world wide kudos was never higher, qualified out of the groups and had a few bob, so what did we do, ” sell our best players and bring in shite ”
I also see that Park is rumoured to be coming back, again a backward step, now if they bring back Neil McGuinness, fine, after all he was the one who discovered Virgil and Vic, not Park as the spin goes, Park is Pedro’s poodle, his voice and ears in the playing side of things.
I still recall with utter horror the power that Park seemed to hold at the club, the day we played Ross Cty in the SC semi at hampden, the very start of Lenny’s stint with us, Lenny was going to Park who was on our bench for advice, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, a scout giving the new manager advice FFS, Park was the first casualty under BR, must have miffed Pedro even more me thinks.
Naw, there is only one answer to everything that is wrong with scottish football, starve them of the green pound, trust me they will be begging for change, everything else is just wind and pish IMO.

TET,

In many ways and looking at the Transfer Windows, it’s as if Park never left us.

TGM
Funny you should say that, had the very self same thoughts masel.
HH

TGM
I have no problem with the policy as such, it’s the market we have to work in, buy cheap in the hope we can sell for wheans, we have no choice in reality, we are just no that good at it, the one person we did have who could spot a player left for reasons I am not that sure about so won’t speculate, but reading between the lines, when you arny appreciated at your work you tend to leave.
If Park does come back in an official capacity we may as well resign ourselves to the OF and dream of europe.
HH

Cosy corner bhoy

TET: I find it difficult to reconcile your opinion on PL wishing to keep Govan Works X1 and us close, and, full houses for ‘OF’ games.
As I see it the opposite is true.Celtic Park will full if we are stuffing the latest version. We know they are not Rangers but their support think they are so we are stuffing Rangers! Always a vote winner..look at the uptake for the newly available seats at the last game. And…if 800 is written in stone these seats will be same price as all others of a similar category, which won’t please PL!

The Gombeen Man

TET,

The overriding thing is the deceit and the pretence that Celtic PLC are not a key part of the agenda to keep the same club/Sevco lie alive.

It is an easy earner and it forever nails us as an integral part of the OF poison.

The silence from Celtic and ongoing suspicions about the capability and more importantly, the motives of the suits won’t go away.

In Neil Doncaster we trust…?

CCB
There are many in the same boat as you are, as long as Struth isny rowing it you will be fine 😉
Why hoard money, why not use it to the betterment of the team, why bring in a top manager and not back him in keeping with what he has brought to the club, from where I am sitting the board have taken the decision that euro football is a luxury they can’t afford, the OF is a sure fire winner in their opinion, it sells, bigotry sells, sectarianism sells, hate sells, Pedro himself said we lose £10 mill a year without them, that’s more than the europa league brings in and it’s guaranteed, it’s all about the money.
IMO they are rangers, everything about them says rangers, absolutely everything down to the cheating, the corruption, the rule breaking, the in house referees, the lick spittle media, the compliant governing bodies and not forgetting the entitlement, the £49 ticket it the real give away
HH

Monti ,,
having signed his new deal and knowing hes first choice starting up there he wouldnt move for both a pay rise and guarantee starting position surely ? He will get more dosh probably but the career would most likely stall , with option of forcing loan spell . Ajer and Mc Kenna full time and long term ? Dont know about that at all .
We get a Epl loan every last week ,, its staying good until that happens plus the fact he will be new and hasnt played yet the biggest games of the season are upon us and the most responsibility sits on a 20 year old shoulders to hold that defence together.
After those qualifiers whatever happens no one on here is giving Kris stick without hearing about it from me. I dread to think we didnt have him.
He might not be perfect or universally loved but right now that kid is the rock we shall build our fortress on.
Fair play to the bhoy I say. This could make or break his long term career with us becoming first choice for such big games.
Hope all good pal.
Hail Hail

mahe

Garry ,,, good to see you around.
Simo has proven time and time again we cant count on him and has two years left on his contract ,, the ideal selling time. I would have punted him years ago. I think if Neil sees him as needed for the qualifiers then he will slot straight into the team on his return whenever that is .
Ajer isnt perfect but hes ours and young enough to be molded into the player we want. Some experience beside him long term would be priceless not only for his career but for us .
Unfortunately though , being Norwegian plus having great build and height , if he displays a good level of skill then at that age that is quite a package that might well be tempted down south at some stage if there is interest.
Hail Hail and dont work too hard on those nightshifts

A thing of beauty

Mahe, I always appreciate your articles but god help us if you think the future is kris ajer. Do you not remember AEK Athens at home. He actually managed to play worse than Jack Hendry though managed quickly to forget whilst hendry still remains scarred. Signed as a midfielder I think his passing is terrible and that the is being polite. He will stride out of defence but his strut belies the inner fear that he feels as it dawns on him he’s going to have to either make a pass or beat a man. He had a decent run against Aberdeen where their defence clearly mistook him for Moses but he dragged his shot from 12 yards. The reason he is rated is because he makes great tackles but mostly these are in response to getting too tight and turned or in mid reading the bounce or pace of a ball over the top and having to recover. I’ve rarely seen a defender go to ground as often as kris and I’ve definitely never seen a good defender go to ground as often. Marry all this with a lack of physicality for his size and I just can’t see it. I’m on record as saying if McKenna was a right footed centre half he’d be in the juniors but having watched him closely a fortnight ago I’d say he’s better than ajer. I’m not usually so harsh and I’ve actually tried to temper this post but believe me if we think kris ajer can take us into the champs league we are dreaming.

mahe

BMCUWP ,, hes a stick on future Captain me thinks . But yeah will probably get that award . Thank God we have him,, hes gonna be needed . Shouldnt be in this position of course ,, hardly the greatest planning we are seeing .

A central defender is a key component of the team.
When Marc Reiper had to retire due to injury in my opinion it cost us titles.
The problem we have is not only will our defense need recruitment but also despite having a plethora of midfielders we lack balance in that area.
We do not have nor seem to want to implement a system with coaches technical enough for the modern era.
A recruitment policy based on future profit is not ideal.
We need a cohesive strategy for the football department.
The probable confirmation of Lennon points to a continuation of the past and one guy having to much power for his myopic views to be less than progressive.

mahe

ATOB,,, you havent grabbed what I was saying I think .
Whether me you or anyone like him or not ,, it looks like big Kris will be the mainstay of our defence this August in the biggest games of the season. .
I base this on the fact Neil knows him and starts him every game he can , which makes sense , and hes ours and reliable enough unlike Jozo.
I suspect its him and Bitton going into any qualifiers .
My take is the lad never asked for this , and cant be blamed , and I hope isnt if things go wrong as we are clearly seeing poor succession planning .
Therefore I think he should be given slack if it goes south , and I will point that out if needed at the time which hopefully doesnt come.
Kris will be the man in August. The man we are pinning our hopes and dreams on to pull us into the group stages . A tough gig indeed. This Spain game is a great litmus test.

Fan-a-tic,,
it would make great footballing and business sense to go out and purchase a good defender . Virgil made a lot of sense in both worlds.
Neils defenders he signed,,,
Mulgrew
Majstorovic
Wilson
Ambrose
Van Dyke
Mouyokolo

A look at that list says big men first and foremost just like Martin used to buy ,, and it also shows an approx 2 outta 3 end up making it ( playing over 80 games for the team ).
Not a bad record.
We must imagine he will have the leeway to bring in or at least choose from a list his new first choice defender. I pray he has that gravitas at least get that .

Sorry to butt in on above post but if it’s an Ajer/Bitton combo in qualifiers we are truly ducked.
One has zero positional sense, can’t tackle and gives away stupid fouls in dangerous areas.
The other has potential but is defensively naive.
Simonuvic is a far superior defender to both.

You will need to take a wee run up to Toronto for Hamish to meet Seamus.

TGM @ 1.21 pm
Again it’s down to the money, if we want any kinda meaningful change it’s got to be forced upon them, and by them I mean every suit that is involved in the game in scotland, it’s the only consistent, money or to be more precise the lack of it will force change.
Some will come back with uefa and fifa are more corrupt, so feckin what, the whole world is corrupt, we can’t change them but we play in scotland, get our own house in order first and foremost, can you imagine playing in an honest and open league, a league where you know that the referees and the powers that B are transparent and fair, sheer bliss, our forefathers and our grandweans deserve it.
Deprive them of the green pound and change will happen pretty dam quick, it’s no that it would be any kinda hardship, a few well chosen games and the scramble would be astonishing.
Make a few simple demands, don’t leave it to them to make the changes cos it will never happen, the support needs to make the demands, after all, it’s our game and without us and our money there is no game, I just can’t get my head around how people can’t see this.

TET,

Monetising the Scottish Catholic Diaspora is the name of the game.

It means don’t risk the goose that laid the golden egg. Keep the auld alliance going with the blue pound. Europe’s off the radar and too big a risk.

It’s why Rodgers fell out with Pedro and why they can’t tell the truth.

This is a dangerous time for them. That’s why they have gone full tilt to scapegoat Rodgers. I read on another blog (not CQN, but suspiciously similar)…the term ‘King Rat.’

Disgraceful stuff.

You can kid some of the people most of the time but you can’t………..

Sadly your post rings all too true.
I am not convinced even with support from the club in the transfer market that BR had the technical/tactical savvy to take us forward.
It’s irrelevant now he has gone but the all out assault of him bears the whiff of a concerted campaign.
The people behind such have started their pro Lennon campaign so the strategy you and TET are discussing continues.
I fear we will never realize the potential or supporters ambitions for the football team will ever be realized while such myopic characters control our club.
