St Mirren vCeltic 3-4-2019

Last nights game was watched live by our own East Coast correspondent Fan-a-tic who was kind enough to draw up a match report . Many thanks partner .

St Mirren 0 – Celtic -2 Scorers (Weah and Christie)
Bain; Lustig, Simunovic, Ajer, Izaguirre; Brown, Ntcham, McGregor, Forrest, Weah, Burke,

Subs: De Vries, Toljan, Rogic, Benkovic, Sinclair, Edouard, Christie
Positive looking line up but my fears of Lennon as a coach have grown after some very insipid games with poor tactical decisions.
The fact the not one of our promising youth are included is no surprise from Neil.
The line up has goals in it but will our tactics allow such?
Were playing in 3rd kit and i hate that strip.
Fairly pedestrian opening with not much fluidity.
9 minutes great through ball by McGregor sets up Ajer who skies it well over.Should have done better.
14 minutes and we take the lead with a Weah header after Lustig has shot saved.
20 minutes Burke shoots wide after great McGregor pass.
29 penalty Celtic for StMirren handball
Ntcham misses then hits rebound of the bar.Was a poor effort.
Lost rhythm after that and the half petered out until 44th minute when McGregor has shot blocked after JF cutback.
Half time.
Livelt start to second half with both Burke and McGregor having shots saved in first 5 minutes.
The Bain makes a great save from volley at edge of box.
Resultant corner causes panic but we clear.
58 Bain makes 1 on 1 save after we get caught napping at free kick.
Christie replaces Ntcham.
Christie forces decent save fro Saints keeper after just coming on.
69minutes Benkovic replaces Lustig.
Two quick shots by Christie and Weah but both just wide.
Ed then replaces Weah.
To much hesitation in our play that slows game down. Also the legacy of Brendan’s safety first passing is still there.
84 minutes and Christie volley deflected for our second goal.
Keeper then holds face as if hit by something when flashbang goes off.
It looked faraway from him though another object seemed to go a few feet behind him.
88th minute and StMirren come close but we clear off the line after Bain made the original stop.
5 minutes added but relatively quiet ending.
Some nice interchanges in our play but we seem confused as to wether to remain safe or be positive.
Our passing to often is behind man and our mindset cautious.
Christie and Ed both looked dangerous when they came on.
Strange game as we could so easily won by a lot more.

Although the points were collected last night by all accounts the team was flat again with Lenny still failing to coax a style of play from the team , who look disjointed but are winning due to better quality on our behalf for the most part .
This will worry many as already next year is looking tough to face the qualifiers with any optimism . The defence needs a splurge , yet with the current stand in manager not blowing away any doubt like Ole did at United then there just remains an air of uncertainty around the club .
We face a huge summer . It cannot be understated.
The suits really really need to earn their money here as to get it right sets the club up for the magic 10 and they get their name associated .
I note Lenny doesnt seem to play central defenders that wont be here next year ie Benkovic and that he gave a run out to Jozo last night but kept playing Kris.
I think hes seeing if Jozo can put a few games together .
He plays and finds a bit of form from here until the end of the season then I can see him back and starting in these early qualifiers next season.
He breaks down again and I doubt we see him play again. Cut price deal and cut our losses .

Have a read at this story and switch Aborigine for Celtic fan and tell me how far away that is ?

Meanwhile it has been quite a crazy few days of finger pointing and off the chart allegations of who exactly is to blame .
Our Captain has clearly won that “ prize “.
Just last week I read an online rumour that he was crocked and retiring at the end of the season . That should have sent the alarm bells ringing there and then but no need .
He wouldnt have signed on for another two years if he didnt think he could offer something and we all know will revel in the next two seasons if all goes to plan .

Unfortunately that target the media , and certain people within the game itself helped with , painted on his back will shine even brighter now . He will need help more than ever even if he wont admit it himself .
This could also see the Plc themselves come under a lot of pressure inadvertently as there are a few players the fans would go ballistic over if they found themselves repeatedly attacked while the suits stay silent .
Scott would be near the top of that list . Hes a strong dedicated bhoy of course , been around the block and is an old warhorse who will never shy from a scrap ,, he is also our leader and these next two years are already big on and off the field.
I have already read concerns about the Ibrox game for him , and not only from players ffs.
It could get ugly over there , very ugly .
The head says rest him a lot now in the league and keep him for the Cup games , and certainly dont play him “ there “
The heart says Unleash the Dragon and let Broonie do his thing every week . And especially play him over there !
Would you pick him ?

Thanks for the article, pretty much sums up, my thoughts. Big decisions all over the place in the summer. Oh and I’d play broony every time at ibrox, we need him there.
Awe naw from last night. I did read what you sent me with the redacted information. It was not clear to me that it was ibrox and I cannot understand that if that were true other blogs would not be making a big issue of it.
As for the idiot from last night. This is a recurring theme at our games now and if you are happy not to debate any solutions we should just leave it there. It just makes us the same as the rest eh.

HI FAN-A-TIC, good summary of the game,,dont think ollie burke will make it at celtic, great turn of pace, but could not hit a coos arse with a banjo, some fans on the other side were comparing him to big yogi hughes, no chance, yogi could run and put the ball in the back of the net,,, ryan Christie has been sorely missed,,must admit anybody think ncham is a bit short on confidence hence the penalty miss,,still think there is a player there somewhere, overall lets just say another 3 points towards the title.hh.

April 4, 2019 9:49 am

Fan-A-Tic, Good resume. When K.Ajer missed that shot on 9 mins. I was disappointed but then excused as he is a defender not a striker. Then I thought of big Virgil or Denayer – that shot would have been buried in the netting.
Talking about Denayer it seems his playing career was at it’s best when with Celtic. How many times has that happened? Although I heard Teemu is doing better.

April 4, 2019 10:07 am

Just had a look at some figures for 2014/15. Virgil – 10 goals. Jason – 6 goals. Not bad for CBs !. btw, Teemu scored 2 goals but can’t remember if he was out injured a lot.

April 4, 2019 10:10 am

I can’t wait until Leigh is back to his best. In a game like last night, with the chances created, I’m sure he would have bagged a hat trick! 🙂

Sounds like last night was all a bit “After The Lord Mayor’s Show”. So much so that after reading your report,I didn’t bother with the highlights.

We really should know by now how to break down stuffy teams with packed defences. Let’s face it,we have shown plenty of times how NOT to do it! Having said that,Man City only won 2-0 at home to a relegation-threatened side. Sometimes the result will just have to do.

I haven’t a clue how to stop these idiots from doing what they do. But stop it we must. It’s every game now,and deflects from what people pay to see and want to see. It drives the agenda against us,as though the MSM need any encouragement. And it has sod all to do with football either here or abroad.

BREAKING: Scott Brown has been cited by the Scottish FA for ‘not acting in the best interests of Association Football’ after Sunday’s Old Firm.

Aye, Man Cty have the best players on the planet and struggled to break down Cardiff, a lot of the ones we have are a few planets short of the Cty players.
Breaking down the proverbial parked bus is not an easy task no matter how hard you try and at whatever level you are at.
I think Lenny’s problem is… he has said that he has changed nothing and letting the players carry on as if under BR, if that is the case, the players are not responding, he needs to stamp his ideas on them imo, I honestly think the players are a tad confused as to what they are doing, at least it seems that way to me as things are not working as they should be.
It’s like they get the fear at times, it’s two steps forward and three back at times, when we attach with speed and purpose we blow the oppo away, when we dither about passing side to side we huff and puff and often get caught out.

Celtic had better get this overturned in the name of sanity. And I suspect that The Compliance Officer has been forced into this as such citations are normally made much earlier in the week.

As for the “charge”,I’m reminded of this little beauty from the past.

There are only 2 blogs on the planet that would deal with this.

Phil and John James. Paul and James are not allowed too but their blogs are not their main source of income.

It´s been splattered all over both of them …both of them have obviously been well warned off it.

I suspect that the Celtic source that provided Phil with that information now regrets it.

Ibrox meantime is slowly being repaired and funded by government grants. Which is good but raises other questions.

Yes we are just the same as the rest. Well not really we are Old Firm. The rest are the rest.

As I say I can´t get excited over a banger and those that do over such things as Ibrox stadiums safety certificare are not helping matters much as far as I am concerned. They are part of the problem also.

We´ll agree to have differing opinions on the gravity of a banger compared to Ibrox roof collapsing

Last word on this.

So Broonie is being charged to appease the hun hoards in the media and on the interweb.
There is a sure fire way to stop this crap, it’s 100% foolproof, it can’t fail.
Neither give a flying duck about the Celtic support, if any semblance of justice is the goal, stop giving them the oxygen to breathe.
Appeasement has Never worked in the past.
Appeasement Doesn’t work in the present.
Appeasement will Not work in the future.

April 4, 2019 11:46 am

In respect of Scott Brown being charged.

It’s taken SFA 4 days to find charges to haul Scott Brown in front of their Judicial Process.

How long has it taken for them to take the charges of non compliance of RFC in 2011 to CAS, a decision taken by that same judicial process because the 5 Way Agreement made it impossible for that process to be applied to TRFC!

In January the ToRs to go to CAS had not been written and Celtic were passive about it.

We still dont know if ToRs established but it’s 8 MONTHS and counting since that decision taken in July 2018 and 4 months when questions asked at Celtic AGM.

The process itself is corrupt. That is clear from Res12 Archive.

Wake up Celtic. Smell the bloody roses.

The SFA Judicial Process is not about justice. It’s a tool that Celtic seem all to happy to accept, that is used to produce results the SFA want.

April 4, 2019 11:49 am

Either that or tell them Celtic have no faith in the process itself and will argue they cannot participate until SFA prove process is clean and uncorrupted by the 5 Way Agreement.

Mea Culpa,

I should have remembered about the self confessed delicate sensibilities of the Ibrox faithful.

When Sevco lost in their first Scottish Cup Final, in May of 2016.The sight of jubilant supporters of Hibernian on the pitch resulted in a bloody confrontation between supporters of Sevco and Hibernian.

The ugly scenes that followed even included a track suited Sevco employee aim a kick at a Hibernian supporter on the sideline.

In the aftermath of the bloody confrontation Sevco issued a statement in which the now familiar ‘get out clause’ of ‘provocation’ was rolled out.

The other favourite, deflection, was in fully employed. The First Minister was blamed. The SFA, ‘BBC Employees,’Tom English, Rod Petrie, the Police. Everything was done to divert attention from violent, unacceptable behaviour from the Sevco support.

In doing so the senior management at Sevco gave the ‘green light’ to violence in the face of what is perceived to be an act of provocation. Violent reaction and denial by deflection and justification are part of the psyche at Ibrox.

Here’s part of the statement,

“We acknowledge that a tiny minority of Rangers fans also encroached on the pitch but only after having been faced with prolonged and severe provocation and in order to protect our players and officials who were being visibly attacked in front of them. Any club’s supporters would have done the same. This distressing and deeply disturbing episode would never have happened had Hibs fans behaved properly but as they swarmed across the pitch it became immediately obvious that the security procedures were inadequate and had failed.”

Scottish football does not have a hope of credibility if senior clubs condone violent behaviour.

Whatever happened to the mentally of the old Rangers? “No one likes us we don’t care.”

By failing to unconditionally accept that violent behaviour is unacceptable the executive at Ibrox unequivocally set out their position.

A violent reaction is justified and Sevco will name and thereby endanger any journalist, politician or public official who gets in their way.

In the short history of their club their legacy has been one of denial, violence and dishonesty. The emotions of support are being played to distract from the onfield and off field failures of the players and executives.

The common theme is that in both matches Sevco lost and violence followed.

Sooner or later the excuses will wear thin.

It’s my experience, ‘if it looks like a punch, it’s a punch.’

That doesn’t seem to be the position at Ibrox.

The operation at Ibrox, the financial shenanigans, transfer skullduggery, intimidation of the media, disregard for binding contracts, blind eye to Health and Safety regulations, the violence by supporters/players and the litany lies is a scourge on the game.

Is it worth £10 million per year?

The Gombeen Man
April 4, 2019 12:04 pm

At last Sunday’s game the first sight I noticed among the Sevco support was a flag with the words ‘Crown Bar, Loyalists’.

Is that Mr Beaton’s favourite watering hole?

Was he the referee that apparently witnessed a number of assaults by Morelos on Celtic players at Ibrox?

Bizarrely was the excuse used that he’d seen the incidents and therefore no action could be taken?

Are we now being asked to have any faith in the credibility of a system which failed so badly previously?

Maybe ‘the best interests of the game,’ is Sevco winning?

Fan-a-tic, thanks for taking the time to put together the leader. 3 points but plenty of work to be done.

April 4, 2019 3:36 pm

Morning all,

fan-a-tic, thanks for the match report from last night.

Have to admit that for me it was a clunky performance & there was an audible sigh resnating round the Celtic stratosphere when the second goal was scored.

NFL’s initial post match comment was “Very pleased” but he referred to the weekend’s dramas & seems happy to have gotten the points.

We could all see that Weah & Burke up front flattered to deceive & did not strike up the understanding that I certainly expected.
They are both clever players and intelligent men, but they didn’t seem to click together. I often think that the intuition to see early enough that your colleague is better placed & have the inclination & skill to set them up is the mark of the superior player, Larsson, Sutton, Hartson, Lubo, all had that skill. They could all finish but they invariably seemed to make great choices in the box.

The SFA are not leading the Scottish game, they wait to see which way the prevailing mood/view is going then they quickly try to get out on front of it. Their move today is part of that revisionist non-management of the game in Scotland.

Scott Brown chose not to react violently to intense & coordinated provocation by several R****** players or to the chants at his expense from away, instead he smiled. When the game was over the celebration was even more intense for him in light of the abuse & foul play he had to endure to get the victory. With the rest of the team, he celebrated with the Celtic fans – as he passed the away support he didn’t V sign them or middle finger them – he held up 8 fingers allegedly. Quite a mild reaction in the circumstances. However, the perma-rage of thw whole R****** contingent had not abated & Halliday led the delegation to once more abuse the Celtic captain. He defended himself from assaults & abusive comments and when facing several opponents, assisted by Bain, Lustig & a few others.

The only action that he took that could remotely be considered ill-advised was the 8 fingers to 800 people who were 30 yards away, the same people who delighted in abusing him for the previous 96 minutes. He may be admonished but there should be NO other censure against him.

The SFA have only responded to the traditional howl from R***** when they players’ indiscipline has cost them points & suspensions.
“Whit aboot them? How come they’ve no been done in awe?”

The opposition can dish it out but cannot take it. They are so full of anger when their own plan to provoke Brown failed that they themselves get angrier. Their coach sent them out with a game plan built around intimidating Celtic players & they thought they could easily provoke Brown. When that failed they had no Plan B & thus, their moronic manager resorted to the most infantile & pathetic justification for the violence from many of his players. He never once stated that their violence was unacceptable in any circumstance – he excused theirs & his own failure by justifying it on the back of victim blaming.

Once Gerrard started this blame the victim bandwagon, the hordes & media joined in.

Scott Brown & Celtic should fight any attempt to drag him into a mess provoked, created & justified by the other mob.

They might well do nothing but not without explaining why to shareholders.

There are a number of narratives arising from the Res12 Archive as set out in a cqn post above

but the one that will make it difficult for Celtic not to address, is that the known evidence points to them being defrauded by Rangers FC in March 2011 and the SFA participated in covering it up from September 2011 to date.

That evidence re March 2011 was presented to a lawyer expert in criminal law, who concurred with the heading in the Archive that the licence was granted on false pretence

That is what the SFA have been trying hard to keep under wraps from 19th September 2011 if folk visit the archive at and check for themselves. and what follows from 2015 on the archive supports the view SFA did not want that to come out.

Now if that advice is wrong, the SFA only have to explain on what grounds, which is what Res12 would have delivered had it been passed.

If however the advice is correct, shareholders have ever right to ask what Celtic intend to do about a criminal matter.

From the moment Res12 was adjourned in 2013 the issue was never going to go away.

I understand what you are saying, but you have known this for years now, the dugs in the street know what the SFA did was criminal, they committed a fraud along with the dead club, they have been found out due to Res 12 and have attempted to cover it up, the PLC have also known that a fraud was committed due to your good selves, so why are we still at the self same juncture that we were at years ago, why no crowd funding to take the SFA to court and to threaten the PLC with action, you know fine well that the PLC will kick the can down the road for as long as there is no direct action being taken.
This is no slight on you guys btw, I have so much admiration for youz all.

Welcome Christine to the blog, I think your post is on the previous article?

When Rodgers left the share price fell by 6p.
Linsell Train hoovered up the discounted shares.

They now hold 18.4%. Dermot holds 44%.

These two own 62.4% of the shares.

For whatever reason there is no apparent appetite within the PLC/major investors to become involved with the Res12 issues. The major shareholders call the shots, not me or you.

Maybe the unpredictable consequences of litigation, possible financial loss, public disquiet…Who knows?

These guys like certainty. Unless it suits them and the end game is very attractive/profitable, don’t expect them to take on significant and unnecessary risk.

Privately that even say that their (in)actions are in the shareholders best interests…(share price/profitability/stability).

My guess is their hands would need to be forced.
