Look to the Future

In this blogging game if you’re only going to focus on the negatives you’re a doom merchant plain and simple. And the simple fact is if we do have a complaint about some aspect of the club we don’t actually want it to exist and a trouble free Celtic world would be just fine by me .
So on that vein yesterday’s news that we are planning a major development of the youths training facilities up at Barrowfield was manna from heaven for this bhoy.

I have a dream of eleven homegrowns , again.
It’s done well for us in the past and when you sit down and think about it , it’s not unattainable at all . Bilbao are famous for it. In fact they only play homegrown although I have heard grumbles they stretch the boundaries of the word.
However this news can only be good news for those who would see such a feat . ?
If those in charge wished for a fanbase fully connected and behind the team then all homegrowns is the nirvana.
Our ultimate dream team for this new century.
Someone smart will go for it one day hopefully.
Imagine a team of all ours winning a trophy,,oohhhhh the tears would flow!
But then imagine one getting sold,, and “ your “ one at that ,,,ohhhh the tears would flow !

After a week that the club would best forget they got this good news out there whether timed deliberate or not ( fair enough you gotta play the game sometimes ) , and if there is any time for a signing or two it’s right about now to stem any negativity.
A bit of quality incoming would wipe the smirk off those enjoying any and all pain the club are feeling over a few sensitive issues ,, and give the faithful a boost that many could do with .

If you are wondering is it really needed think on this please,,
We often ponder what our big bank account is for. Well here we have an infrastructure upgrade that will benefit the club and community in the long run , and we can pay it all up front with no worries whatsoever about extra design touch ups or exotic features if there is such .
Splurge at will if you wish and get it perfect , not settle for what we can afford. Not many clubs up north could do that you know. Its here’s the budget , spend it how you will.
This is a great idea for some of that cash and I fully embrace it for one.

Next , the entire sport is focused on the next generation at the moment. Capturing future stars and honing them to perfection before hopefully unleashing them upon surprised victims is the current trend. We should be looking to maximise our status as the domestic giant and hoover up the cream of the crop between the two islands in my own view .
To do that you need to show them exemplary facilities ,, they will have seen run of the mill others and so will their dads who are no doubt by their sides for the journey and in their ear a lot.
Showing them the best training centre in the country is often a deal maker .
This could well pay for itself in the long run if utilised properly.

Those kids themselves. Imagine that tour ,, Celtic Park and the first team dressing rooms,, then Lennoxtown and all it fancy equipment that shows you’ve hit the bigtime.
When you rock over to Barrowfield on the next leg of that tour , to the place where you will spend most of your time,, how would you feel when it’s exactly as professional ,, also top grade equipment that will help you .
To put the kids on the same pedestal as the first teamers and show them from day one you can and do have the best that they can find , and it’s all geared to them and they are respected,,well that’s quite a boost.
That allied with a route into the first team squad, the starting eleven ,, a route we can show with around 5 – 8 homegrown in the first team squad can be a powerful weapon in our arsenal.
Could well be enough to sway many a fence sitting talent that fact.

Aside from the above however the simple fact is that we really should have a full size indoor pitch. It’s just common sense with the climate and for any curious souls that would support.
And the mentioned facilities ( grandstand and refreshments ) will only help entice some punters inside from the elements to savour the stars of tomorrow.
I was stunned we didn’t already an interior full size tbh. This is overdue.
There’s also the injury record that Lennoxtown “ owns “.
You wouldn’t get anyone admitting that’s any or all of the reason for this venture as that would need a scapegoat more than likely . We won’t know how much that came into play but if our record increases after this branch opening draw your own conclusions .
The Celtic Girls teams will also be based there . To be a trendsetter in equality would be fitting of our institution and I’m sure the young ladies that we churn out will do us proud in their Hoops.

So overall this announcement may well be worth its weight in gold and praised fully in years to come , and I must tip my hat and say fair play to those who have brought this to us.
It’s a worthy endeavor indeed and we can honestly say the future’s bright , the future’s green and white !
And oh , can we here at Sentinel Celts be the first to start the movement ,,,
Name it after Tommy Burns !

Don’t know how we can afford to do this when we have lost over £1bn…..cough 🙂

MAHE,,great post as usual, but I wanna see a celtic team now, not when in the words of the mcguinness flint song when im dead and gone, ffs spend some money on the team now, its not as if we have no training facilities just now. is this pedros way of deflecting our attention away from the summer transfer budget, would not surprise me, a charlatan if there ever was one,,hope you are well.hh.

Twists n turns

Nirvana indeed Mahe.
My concerns would revolve around the other distractions there are for kids these days. This’ll sound like

“ ah, in my day you could go to the pictures on the bus with two bob and get fish n chips on the way home”

Things are different now I know, but in respect of youth development, prior to them joining organised football, there’s no self development in the formative years.

When we were young ( here comes the pictures and fish n chips) the streets and what limited grass areas were around, were full of kids from 6 to 15 playing football for 4 hours or more.

Nowadays there’s barely a pitch being used. The lad next door goes to the boxing. Kids from other families I know are at music lessons or on the majority of cases, stuck in a bedroom in front of a computer game.

There are so many distractions and I have to say, a lot of parents who don’t adopt the attitude my own mum took which was “ you lot can go and play, you’re not sitting in front of that tv all day”

How we get the youngsters engaged again at that age is of course the challenge.

I do think though that if you can dramatically multiply the numbers of kids who are developing their skills on the streets and in the parks, you’ll by default increase the numbers who move into the football academies.

11 home grown players. I think Celtic will be the only club who ever reach the dizzy heights of European champions with such a team.

I hope I’m wrong but I fear I’m not.

I personally love the idea of a homegrown Celtic side. Imagine a team of 11 Tierney’s???

Thewildgoose, Hope he’s good in goal 🙂

Monti

KT in goal?

twentfirstofmaynineteenseventynine

Really good post Mahe but I reserve my right to be a greetin faced bast*** and would rather they made a priority of getting us sorted out on the park NOW.

Monti

If we’d have had KT in goal in Seville we would probably have won the Cup

HH

11 Tierneys… That’s a lot of hernias

Monti

21st of May,
Bit harsh on big Rab there m8, he was a good servant to Celtic.

Cosy corner bhoy

Whilst admitting that Big Arab did indeed ‘cost us the cup in Seville’, he got us there with some outstanding performances in previous rounds.
Might be Mourinho’s instructions to Porto to ‘look out for the second ball’ or their time-wasting tactics from the off,or,a shit referee who couldn’t get them back to line up after each goal or add up (from memory took 8 mins at last goal and he added 3!) ,or even Big Bono.
It was still great and I was only watching in a pub in Seville!!!

Cosy corner bhoy

Bloody text Didn’t know Douglas was an Arab.

twentfirstofmaynineteenseventynine

Monti

Youre maybe right mate, but I also felt he cost us the title that year. Im genuinely not one for just picking out players for criticism but he was also brutal in the 3-3 game that season and overall I always half expected him to make a mistake. But then I was never a big Pat Bonner fan either after the ’84 Cup Final, I probably should be more forgiving

HH

I think Big Rab is more of a “Dee” than an “Arab”. I blame the Referee, and Mourinho.

11 homegrown players on the park. Never happen as the board will have sold the decent ones and replaced them with loan deals for us to improve other teams players. All Homegrown ! No Henke,no Naka, no Lubo, no VVD etc etc. Nah I hope we continue to scout world wide and bring the best available talent to Celtic Park. Also we are up against predators from the EPL and Spain where the big clubs are paying youngsters stupid amounts of money to sign. Celtic and Sevco have lost youth team players to Chelsea where they were paying the kids more than some of our 1st team squad. IMO we could never compete with that. Players such as young Dembele are a rarity these days, seems the young man’s parents are more interested in his development than cashing in. However I can see why some would take the cash. Football is cruel with most youngsters never making the grade. How many of our youth development squads ever make a career from football?

In closing i’d much rather we spent a huge heap of the bulging bank balance on the team.

Why can’t Lennox town be upgraded? Genuine question.

MAHE
Good article and i love the headline LOOK TO THE FUTURE.
Totally agree.
But then we have just appointed a coach who has no history of doing so.
One of the first things he did after taking over was remove Henderson who had been one of our creators just two games after he arrived.
Johnston’s role was reduced also.
Lennon has openly stated he has no interest in projects.
In the present climate our custodians only seem to view the future as a place where more money can be made.
A look at the leaked list would support such a view.
Our custodians do not see our players as important parts of a strong football side but merely an asset to make money from at the earliest opportunity.
The board and Lennon seem to be a strange match.
Or perhaps i’m just to stupid to see their cunning plan.

Killing time here during my wife’s surgery, has me thinking about what exactly is included in sexual abuse in sports.

I played football at school, juvenile, junior and, briefly, professionally. The latter if you include reserve/youth team football as professional. While at school level we had an assistant coach who was regarded as something of a joke at that time. Both girls and boys felt uncomfortable in his company. Playing on gravel pitches, you would pick up wounds from going to ground. I still have bits of the stuff in one knee! At FT this assistant coach would come into the dressing room and seek out boys that had been wounded. He would clean the wound of gravel and apply iodine and a bandage or tape. During this process most of us wondered who was benefiting from this “treatment”. Now a days, flags would be raised on this and action would follow. To my knowledge, the treatment never went beyond cleaning and some stroking, but it certainly made everyone feel uncomfortable. Was this sexual abuse? To this day, I cannot answer that definitively.

Ultimately, most refused treatment….leaving that for the girlfriend of the time!

Your article shows how difficult the relationship between adult coaches and the child who participates has become.
If i was a coach i would be tempted to film every interaction of treatment especially here in the USA where litigation is ever present.

When i was about 17 i got an injury with studs and red ash involved.
Coach used magic sponge ,frozen water and a bandage and gauze so i could continue.
After game i went home and saw that there was gravel in the wound.
Got the old scrubbing brush and Dettol out and stuck gauze and bandage again.
Went to the jigging that night and when i got home struggled to get my trousers off as they had stuck to seeping wound.
Went to hospital and doc was pissed off at my stupidity in not having seen to at the time it happened.
Said you need stitches but we need to clean gravel out first.
The young nurse was good looking and i was smitten so i put on a brave face as she scrubbed the wound with some stinging liquid though my tears betrayed my tough guy stance.
The doc returns and examines and tells her to prepare sutures.
She offers him some syringe with anesthesia but he said if he could take your scrubbing of wound he won’t notice a few stitches and then proceeded to sew me up.
He then left and she dressed me down and scolded me for being stupid.
I returned home to lick my wounds as my macho facade had been shown up in front of a young pretty girl.

Whatever happened to the hotel?

She is out of surgery now on schedule and the doc said it went well. We now await pathology to check it has all gone.

Tx for the goodwill. It really helps!

Rebus

Rebus67

Is Harper the replacement for Ntcham? He is a centre mid with attacking mid as his backup position.

Valued at 1.0 million euros.

Rebus

mahe

Rebus, yip he is. Hopefully an upgrade. He won’t want to move to France at least.
Good news on the wife.

Oglach we could refurbish Lennox town but seems poor location as in bad soil and elements have pushed us to think again. All those injuries are due to training there.
And no full size pitch indoors to train in snow.
Lennoxtown Will probably get flogged after the new one built.
Hail Hail

Oglach

Mahe,

So Lennox town not fit for purpose? Now just who was responsible for ensuring full diligence in regards of suitability of location and room for future improvements, will they get their arse booted?
Now being one of the glass half empty fraternity as well as being a member of cynicism CSC, could it be that someone has worked out that there is money to be made selling Lennox town? Or could it be another ‘ look a squirrel’ moment to try and deflect from the recent bad news?

Gordon64

Quality leaders this week guys. Reading back over the last few days on the blog has imo provided an interesting insight into human behaviour and the impact of a deliberately destructive force. There’s maybe a lesson for us all here in that by all means be a passionate disruptor but have a message that can be backed up with reason otherwise we are just a noise that no one wants to listen to. Fwiw I thought it was well handled. Hh

mahe

Oglach,
All valid questions and like the lead says there isn’t a scapegoat clearly lined up.
I’m no expert by any means but have read Lenmoxtown too exposed and often snowing leading to frozen pitch or no training leading to many injuries.
A few blogs touch on this today,,cut our loses.
And in fairness if we are gonna pay 5-10 million for an indoor centre it should be where it’s easier for people to get to and I believe Barrow field is much more accessible but perhaps someone with more local knowledge could confirm.

Gordon, many thanks for the hat tip Sir.
Hope alls well. Yeah was a busy week indeed .

Lennox town will not be sold. We are clearly spending money with regards facilities. The facilities will be a future requirement for UEFA participation. Having the away CL team pay the huns rental for Murray Park will no longer happen. The opportunities to make money from Rugby and the ever more popular woman’s game shouldn’t be overlooked. The disco lights, the Celtic way, the museum all part of hoping to maintain favour with UEFA. When are we going to enlarge the changing rooms?

Rebus

Glad to hear the surgery went well.

The Gombeen Man

Rebus,

I’m delighted to read the surgery went well and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the pathology.

In your post earlier about the Assistant Coach you talked about a few memories. That’s the danger of this topic, I think.

It needs to be very carefully discussed. You handled it very well. People often begin to have long forgotten or suppressed memories triggered and that can sometimes have unforeseen consequences.

Anyway, the lad Harper looks a positive. I read a few blog posts from supporters of WBA, a couple of weeks ago and he’s held in high regard.

One or two mentioned he ‘doesn’t track back.’ But I sensed there was a bit of resentment too about him possibly leaving.

Here’s hoping.

The Mrs had a scan scheduled for Sept, get a call yesterday telling her she had to go today for one, three months earlier than planed, got a bit worried as you do, two hour drive to the hospital, stick the card in the machine, it confirms when her appointment is, so we wait, and wait and wait, eventually I get hold of a nurse who is calling out the patients names, the wife is not on their list, I kinda flipped, amazing how well I can speak Spanish when I am angry, they grovelled and grovelled some more and did everything they could to assist us then, they even opened up another scanner for her, sometimes it pays to get kinda annoyed, I wasn’t over the top, just angry enough for them to get their act together 😉
Now we wait some more for the surgeon to give us the results 🙁
