Summer Lovin

I gotta say the early transfer signs are encouraging from where I sit.
I also must admit I would hate to be actually involved in the transfer side of things as that is one slime ridden cesspool as the Emiliano Sala ( RIP ) fiasco showed us all.
Agents might well be the biggest threat to the games progression to a well run sport if it was so inclined.

So we have three, a lovely number indeed and no first teamer has been sold.
I had thought this was the prime week for the Arse to make their move and yet here we sit still with our young diamond still a bhoy.
And the speculation was not going to decrease after adding another left back especially for the three million mark but that amount doesnt mean much these days.
Still we have nabbed what looks on paper to be a good deal in Boli and nice and early also to help settle.
I like his age ( 24 ) and I like signing Belgians who are technically good and seem a solid footie nation on the rise. Full backs are in demand and we cant have enough good ones.

Our new central defender is great age though at 26 and should have enough under the belt to slot right in. Going out and buying a guy in his prime years from a bigger league is to be commended so well done the club from this man.
Its exactly what we needed , and as the defence won the league last season its very wise to get that addressed first and foremost.
He looks a big athletic bhoy who will hopefully rub off well on another young diamond I really like young Kris Ajer.
Infact I would think those two are the most likely to form and play the majority of the games this coming campaign with Jozo in reserve .

Young Luca Connell certainly looks and sound the part but is the definition of raw talent.
Now I will admit I would like less punts but if we are gonna punt make it sensible.
We seem to have done great homework here that is encouraging.
Had a real up close eyeball at his training and attitude plus minutes on the pitch.
Cant ask for more tbh.
The Championship is a very hard and physical league,,he had 10 games there last season which isnt as many as you would wish but still when youre in that division there is one objective,,,to get out and up to the Prem fullstop.
Managers cant and for the most part dont think long term there and so a young 18 year old does not stand much chance especially in the crucial must win the battle zone of the middle of the park.
However up north with us its actually the best area of the park to blood a youngun as you have Broony keeping you right plus usually another. Options in every direction ideally also so finding an outball shouldn’t be a problem unless closed quickly in which case you are unlikely to receive unless in space. Theres less pressure than the wings were its ahead or inside as the crowd aint having going backwards , less pressure also than the forwards were its Odsonne nailed on and maybe one other , and less than the fullbacks are being judged in both attacking and defending.

Ideally we have a long term lynchpin on the books in young Luca and we should be able to tell if we can start to plan around him should he grab a starting slot and his career takes off during the next 18 months or so.
As Lenny isnt really known for youth it will be interesting counting how much game time he gets.
His international ambitions should improve with the move also but again its game time is clutch for his career progression.
Im excited for him and its great having a “kid “ around the place.

Any bad news to be found is probably Boom Boom Bayo has gotten himself injured. Again.
The jury is still out as we just cant get him settled and playing to judge !
This might mean a loan. Dont mind if option to buy. At a price we would actually pay that is.
The starting right back is still a cause for concern yes but we see clear signs that defence is being worked on so I dont doubt we will nab a starter at some stage.
The incoming quality all seems good so why doubt a decent right back also?

With 4 days to go until the season kicks in ( was there a break at all ? ) one would hope this weekend is spent on shape and working out those creaks prior to proper test.
Sarajevo may or may not be decent but we should approach this game strongly and aim to score away and kill tie for the most part there. Entertain and crush em at home for momentum.
Tuesdays weather in the Bosnia and Herzegovina capital is not ideal with 21 degree heat plus rain and humidity forecast as of now.
It mightnt be easy but were on the road again.

Quiz at 8pm Celtic Park time tonight. All welcome.
Pensmiths sought , can pay in kudo’s and friends.

Copied over from last article,, by Uber Tim
This is the biz.

Might take some of you back 5 years . ??

I first heard this tune via an excellent video tribute to Neil, when, need I remind you, he seemed to suddenly become the enemy of Scotland overnight.

It was a time that inspired many of us to do something. This particular video was excellent in its representation of what this man went through. Utterly horrific

The video is gone. I cant find it. Deleted, i expect, by the SPL, as they have done to videos I’ve made myself, which were perfectly within the terms of copyright.

I’m very concerned about the way Lenny has been accepted into this job, and the online treatment of him. He’s already the bad guy if it doesn’t work. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you, the Celtic Board.

Watch CQN turn on him, while here you will see far more reasoned arguments about the actual football.

This video i refer to was famous as f at the time. It showed the graffiti, and demonstrated the abuse Neil put up with.

It’s not going to be any easier this season. If this arsehole board don’t stand by him, then they must be booted out. Only a fucking moron would defend them at this point. And I’ll bet you a fiver, SFTB, it all turns ugly.

Neil Lennon went through hell for our club. His family too.

And now he’s back, and will prove his ability again. If you continue to defend these disgusting tories on the board against him, then that will be the turning point.

This will be an interesting season indeed.

Uber Tim,,
I stated unless heavily backed this one’s on the board. Stand by that. We can only judge heavily backed after seeing the incoming quality in action imo.
So ideally we should have a good grasp of the overall picture in a few months, Christmas at latest.
Gonna be some season. Buckle up time.

Aye fine here, there’s trembles expected for few days. 5 hours south or so was epicenter.
No big deal. More worries about local rednecks VS incoming snoop Dogg crew, who is playing here tomorrow.
Expecting a bit of chaos. It will be popular.

Thanks for the article mahe, I agree we have done well so far with the ch and lb but there is still a lot to be done. Luca Connell May stake his claim but he’s just a boy.
Uber Tim, I will take time to watch the videos later as I’m heading out for the day just now. I have seen the sfa one before and appreciate the efforts that went in to making it. That the bigot George peat came out to defend their position says it all – and it’s not really changed much now.
Right, off to ride my bike. Great day for it.

I have never knowingly defended a Tory in my life: I have gently poked fun at the bizarre interpretations attributed to Celtic Board members over the years.

I just looked up the official site and the Board members are listed as :-

Ian P. Bankier (65) tee.
Thomas E. Allison (69).
Dermot F. Desmond (67)
Christopher McKay (42),
Sharon Brown (48
Peter T. Lawwell (58),
Brian Wilson (68)

I’ve only ever met and spoken to one of those guys in my life and he is definitely no Tory, though the McGlashans in our support can still find other grounds to criticise him. He has definitely made political and moral mistakes, during his time under Tony Blair, but his credentials opposing Tories, stand up to more scrutiny than most.

Like hurling out the word fascist, I think we need more precise words with which to label our criticisms. For example-

Ian Bankier has shown a singular tone deaf empathy with the Celtic support and has embarrassed us with some of his utterances.

Peter Lawwell has shown a singular lack of enthusiasm to tackle the events around Ibrox and the SFA, SPL prior to 2012 and has, beyond doubt now, hamstrung efforts at justice via Res. 12

Dermot Desmond has been a rampant Capitalist, who has been lucky to avoid legal repercussions for his activities; a guy who is more likely to buy political parties to promote his interests than feel a need to promote them or vote for them.

I know nothing of the other guys and their activities in the polling box. I am not aware of any political statements they have made either.

I am being asked to be angry in advance for some kind of inevitable but, as yet, undemonstrated non-backing of the manager by the Board- that, to me, seems to be hinting at transfer fees again, unless you feel that NFL harbours resentment against anyone, inside CP, for not backing him against the abuse he suffered last time.

Yet again, I will emphasise, I do not judge players in advance by the transfer fees we Pais for them. I have no idea if Julien or Mbombo will prove to be good signings until they prove to be good signings. I have no idea if Luca Connel’s enthusiasm is any more effective than that shown by Jack Hendry last year.

I will not go to the barricades to protest at paying less than X million pounds for a RB.

I will complain if said RB, no matter what he cost or even if a fee transfer, if he is ineffective,

Got to run now

Good article Mahe, three/ four more signings and we’re good to go.

Let’s hope we sign this guy. I can think of a song that’s tailor-made for him!

July 6, 2019 10:41 am

Annoyed with N’tcham, talented player but has only turned it on sporadically in the Hoops. Now he is more or less saying coz the opposition standard is poor here he is not motivated to kick on to the next level. Well Olli what about your wages & the fans, do you not think you owe it to us to go out there & be the best you can. If we get decent money I would be all for cashing in our chips & wishing him bon yoyage,

July 6, 2019 11:12 am

A wee tester for tonight’s quiz – what is the name of this song?

July 6, 2019 11:14 am

Funny that, innit? Those opponents who aren’t up to his high standards played him off the pitch most times he played last season. Through sheer application. Ollie should mibbe give it a try one of these days.

Give us a clue-what song?

July 6, 2019 11:16 am

Bobby, I’ve just posted it! Ben Selvin song.

Corkcelt, What do you think of Michael Collins. He’s always been a hero of mine but I understand because of the civil war in Ireland not everyone might think that. I loved the controversy in Britain when Princess Di took her two sons (William and Harry) to see the film about him and loved it.

Just an added thought to N’tcham. You know what he said is probably not all that wrong when you consider the type of “robust” challenges he’s faced on the field in Scotland. Although perhaps he should have kept his thoughts to himself, as it does nothing towards our attempts to bring a player of his ilk to the club, it might even dissuade them por cierto.

July 6, 2019 11:48 am

JimtheTim, Growing up in Cork with strong Republican tendencies I hated Free Staters intensely. There were some horrible atrocities committed during the Civil War mostly by Free Staters which put the Black & Tans in the shade. I saw Collins as the ultimate Free Stater so to put it mildly disliked him a lot.
However as I went through life I began to mellow and I now do acknowledge his greatness & bravery. Civil war was the saddest & most hurtful periodt of out history& to be honest a period I prefer not to think about.

July 6, 2019 11:48 am

July 6, 2019 11:53 am

Fair enough Corkcelt. I admit I tend to think of what he did before the civil war. I never knew until I made friends with a Dubliner that some songs I just thought of as ‘rebel’ were in fact on one side of the divide.

July 6, 2019 12:03 pm

Corkcelt, talking about the black and tans. My family owned a huge farm around Athlone. They told me that in those days, when they were working on the fields if they saw those basturts approaching they had to run to the edge of the fields and hide in the hedges. They would fire indiscriminately into the hedges for fun. Thankfully no one was killed. They stormed into our house one day looking for a great uncle of mine whom they didn’t like. But he was hid up the chimney! HA HA.

Good article as we enter another season with too many questions.
Circumstances could be mitigated by forward planning?
Our preseason’s are consistent though a change of coach and system are added factors.
The x factor will be how the returning players adapt to this and new players integrate?
Time is not on our side with our first European game looming.
Preseason has been relatively meh with only the youngsters showing any semblance of a team or system when played together.
Though it was easier than playing on the Kicking Fields of Scottish football.
This is a worry but maybe Neil will find it easier to enforce his style and system with new additions.
The handling of Brown will be a key factor in my opinion.
Some players like Ntcham will go and have no adverse effect on team and morale despite obvious talent but if a KT or McGregor are sold how existing members of the squad react will have an impact on our season.
The next few weeks should be telling.

We are certainly signing players much quicker this close season than of late. Which I believe does show there HAS been forward planning, and before anyone says about the signings being made in the winter transfer period, it is virtually impossible to get any quality in that window for various and obvious reasons. por cierto

July 6, 2019 1:24 pm

If the plc know the footballing schedule long in advance signing guys whose probable first game will be a European tie is hardly forward planning?
Why do we only talk in the context of this window?
The modern football environment is difficult due to the Bosman ruling so succession planning is vital.
The litany of excuses over many windows does not wash as the circumstances remain the same.
Yes we have a new coach but the PLC were aware that would be the case long before.
We have been a reactionary team on and off the field for far too long.

I’m not discussing just this window. The signings that we have made is also forward planning for future seasons as they are signing 4-year contracts.

Last summers transfer window and the last window, which are generally not used for long term signings, was abysmal, throughout the club, but our length of contracts for players does show planning. We have also renewed contracts of players with long term planning involved, as again these were mostly 4-year contracts.

N’tcham (2022) being one, Tierney (2023!) McGregor (2023!) Ajer (2022) Ralston (2022) Forrest (2022) Christie (2022) Rogic (2023!) Morgan (2022) Bain (2022) Johnston (2022) Hendry Yes I know! (2022) Add to these the lads who have just signed Boli (2023) Julien (2023) Connell (2023) that list looks like planning to me, por cierto.

When you look at all those players who have signed long term contracts, it’s only been since Brendan came to the club, that should tell you and anyone else who are hell bent on giving the board-Lawwell kudos that they don’t deserve it, the credit should go to BR and his longer term vision instead of the short term grab it when you can boards vision.

July 6, 2019 2:52 pm

Forward planning or forward profit?
Ntcham was not viewed as a long term player. but as one who would secure future profit.
Ralston and Johnston both look like forward planning but as i often say without a better strategy to integrate into first team their future is uncertain.
Hendry who has been the victim of circumstances was a hopeful punt.So forward planning with a difficult chance of success. He was signed with the view of replacing a player who would have earned us profit. That he did not fulfill promise through no fault of his own meant we lost out on selling Boyata for a tidy sum.It was more of a forward gamble.
The Bosman ruling does make it a difficult landscape but as our CEO is paid the equivalency of a top EPL CEO then we should expect a strategy that encompasses the footballing side the way it does profit.

Noel Skytrot
July 6, 2019 3:19 pm

The disrespect that NtCham has served to the supporters is going to make things really difficult for him if no one buys him in the transfer window. Porto looked to have cooled in their interest in buying him and Marseille can’t at this time. I wonder what’s going to happen? are we going to try and recoup our money or try to make some profit? no point in having someone who is unhappy at the club and won’t lift a finger.

I watched a lot of the under 20’s world cup.
It was a good tournament with a lot of skill and forward/positive play on show.
We are linked with Cifuentes of Ecuador.
He has stated he has a choice between Man city and Celtic to make.
He is a very good footballer, strong in the tackle with skill and a cannon for a shot.
The downside being he looked raw and impulsive and was very rash in the tackle at times.
To be expected with one so young.
He is more than capable of dealing with the physical side of Scottish football but could he cope with the mibbery that will befall him at such a young age?

The whole club is organised around making a profit, so are all the major clubs in the World.

If it is the case that these players signed long term deals because of BR, then that stands up the argument, in this instance, the CEO gave him, BR, what he wanted.

These contracts mean extra cash being ploughed into these players pockets through a vast increase on wages, so there again another sign of money that is being spent within the club, por cierto. playersheateddriveways.cfc

July 6, 2019 3:40 pm

Completely agree that all football clubs are set up for profit.
Sevco being the exception as they are set up for a racist/supremacist agenda.
But most of the top clubs have a better balance in the ratio between footballing side and profit.
Last season we boasted of having 40 million in the bank when we had an income of around 100 million.
Would be interested to see how many other top clubs would have 40% of turnover saved when there was need for improvement of the personnel in the football team?

Why are you again giving Pedro kudos for just doing his job, he is paid higher than 3/4 of CEO’s in the EPL for managing a team in a pub league, a team that for the most part of his tenure were in a two horse race and for the past seven years were in a one horse race, it would be seriously difficult not to do well, yet the CEO gets all the credit for this, it’s absolute madness.
The money that has been generated in the past couple of years has been due to BR, we were struggling to break even before he came to the club, the CEO has told the support on more than one occasion that everything the club generated would be put back into the club, that has not happened, note I didn’t say back into the team, even tho, sitting in the bank in not into the club no matter how anyone tries to spin things.
We must be the only club on the planet where the CEO gets the credit for what the team on the park is doing, got to hand it to Pedro, he has the support onside and in his pocket, fair play to him for that.
