Another fans view from the heart

In 2015 a young Welsh lady decided to write her dissertation on football fans vs customers and used Cardiff City fc as her model .

I found parts of her 11 thousand word piece to be unmissable reading and it may well be apt to many of us this week.

Below she interviews a local fan about his connection and commitment.

Its quality that I think we should all read. Well done Hattie.

Okay, this is Hattie Powell’s dissertation study of Cardiff City fans and I’m here with a season ticket holder, if you’d like to tell us about yourself…

Yeah, sure. I’ve been a season ticket holder at Cardiff most my life and I’m 23 now, so quite some time. Umm I currently still live in Cardiff, and I work part time…

So you’re from the area… In your opinion, do you think fans are satisfied in their relationship with the club?
Umm, no not really. The owner Vincent Tan doesn’t seem to care about us fans. We go to games every week, week in week out and it just seems like he does what he wants and I think that this annoys most the fans. Umm, he doesn’t consider where we come from, our heritage, it’s just you know, what he wants to do with the club.

Do you think this is the same sort of feeling for all fans, or do you think different types of spectators can behave differently, you know, especially in reaction to you know all the changes that have been happening?

Uhh, I really don’t think anyone likes the new owner, umm and what he’s done to the club. Uhh, I know that some fans that just tend to go to a few games and buy the shirts or go as ‘glory supporters’ when the teams at the top like when we got into the premiership and stuff like that… but I can’t really speak for them. To me they aren’t real fans, like the ones that don’t truly care about the club and the team no matter what… They’re the real fans. So yeah, I suppose the fans can act differently, like from my perspective, the changes made by the owner just really annoyed a lot of the
true fans and on the whole, everyone that cares about the club just wants him out really.

Yeah, so you sort of consider yourself a true fan?
Yeah, definitely!

Umm, so do you think the behaviour of some fans has, you know, can have an effect on other spectators? So, if we’re talking about protests, like ‘We’ll always be blue protests”, wearing only blue kits to matches or not attending games… Umm, did everyone follow this? Or was this just, you know, the true fans?
Uhh, I think the great thing about being a fan of a football club is that you feel part of something. It’s the people’s choice whether they go along with what the owner does or whether they choose to stand up against it. Uhh, but like I keep saying, people generally don’t like him. Like I said earlier, all the fans are different but, it was when we were united, and we were all now united and how unhappy we all were and you know since he’s finally recently started to pay attention to us and we got the kit changed back to the original colour.

You said the fans did become united in this, sort of against the owner, umm how do you mean, how did you feel united?
Like myself, we all stood up against the changes. Umm and like in how we acted at games, like we chanted or left matches early or didn’t go at all… This helped us control the atmosphere, and I think that’s what got us heard and got the changes.

So, do you think this has all come about, sort of because of the media surrounding the club and the changes made by the owner… sort of, to football in general, do you think this has changed how they feel about the industry or about how they feel fans are valued now?
I think the changes made by Vincent Tan and with all the newspapers and stuff and social media like Twitter made us look like a joke… All Tan seemed to care about was money and did what he wanted to the club.
Yeah…He doesn’t really understand that the fans are part of the club as well. The club and the players need passionate fans and I think people stop caring about the club and going to matches if the fans aren’t and don’t feel valued, or even part of football at the club.

Umm then yeah, hopefully that will change if we get the badge back, like it
has since the change of the kit back to the blue colour.

Yeah, so yeah, so sorry … Yes, I had other data from other research that found that attendance would decrease; fans said they would stop going because of umm all the changes happening and so their commitment could decrease and would… But do you think this is actually true? Like would you actually stop going? Would you give up the passion you have for the club over all the changes?
A lot of the fans were affected by the changes he made, like the kit and the change of the badge. It didn’t feel like it was our club anymore and people did stop going to matches. That all changed and It did all change when we got into the Premiership but now we are worse of and it all needs to be changed back or we will lose more fans. If he doesn’t live up to the promises it will make things worse for the club and the fans. There are definitely positive changes happening, with people coming back but it all needs to go back to how it was, in my opinion.

So do you think the owner is starting to care about the fans? Does he want to win them back?
Yeah, I think recently he’s started to realise how important fans are and we’ll all be against him until he changes the club back to how it was before. Umm if he doesn’t, then yeah I won’t want to but I will stop going to matches and supporting the club.

Back to the article…

One of the big complaints about Tan’s ownership was that not only did he change the club’s crest,he changed the team’s colours. From blue to red!

Wisely,he changed the colours back again, and on the most recent reincarnation of the crest the bluebird-used to be a coach company and a regular attenders at the games when I were a lad-regained it’s prominence.

Above a Chinese dragon, rather than a Welsh one!

Cardiff is just over an hour away from Swindon, been there many a time. A few of the lads in Swindon are from there and they still want rid of him. Cardiff are blue, crests have bluebirds and dragons are Welsh. Nothing less will do for them.

Could you imagine a new Celtic owner abandoning The Hoooooops? Or the crest?

Morning Fholks.

I’m way behind on things, and have opened a new tab to post a quick message.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to every one of you who posts or lurks.

Wee nutter Uber Niece is fully recovered and back to her wee mad self. That was very scary. Not convinced by the diagnosis that is was either a virus or “hormonal” due to her age, but I hope they’re right.

Thanks all again.

I’m away back to catch up on a few days.

Before I do, can I just say, I took the time to Car crash Quick News a wee bit, and MiT, you’ve gone up a few thousand notches in my estimations.

Your handling of those who deal in verbosity to kill discussion was poetic. I’ve no idea what you were all talking about, but I’m not a complete idiot, and none of us are.

I hate sycophancy, but am not scared to say when I really like someone and their approach.

Consider yourself in the Uber Time Perfection List along with BMCUW. And all else who who post here. This is going to be a valuable, beautiful site for us Tims thanks to you all. BP, Awe Naw and Mags add a wee bit of colour too ?❤❤

August 17, 2019 5:55 am

Thanks for the news about your niece. I think I can safely say that we are all nearly as delighted as you and the rest of her family!

Twists/ Bobby,

She was dancing away last night with her brother having a great time and her mum sent me videos and pics of the cheeky wee bollocks doing two pronged vickies at the camera…. as they do…. ??…. she answers to no one !! I love that ?

I told her she was crap at pulling funny faces….. stick to her normal one for laughs ?

“I hate you Uncle Uber ”

She used to mug me when she was 7 by booting f$ck out of my shins. Reckon she owes me about £67,000 quid ?

Anyway, my deepest thanks to all of you for prayers, thoughts and concern. Especially those who prayed. Love the lot of ye, ye dirty rebels ?

August 17, 2019 6:13 am

We were about to send a posse to rescue from deepest darkest England.

BP and JimtheTim said not to bother, it was your own choice to go there.

I said, bollocks, you’re a proper hero venturing down there to meet deeply embedded Scots agent BMCUW and give him some decent company for a day. ?

August 17, 2019 6:16 am

Not that deeply embedded, mate. Over a quarter of a century down here and they still can’t understand a word I say!

Especially if I’m just off the phone back home.

August 17, 2019 6:24 am

It’s not your accent, it’s the wisdom in your words fella !!

Still reading back.

Twists and JimmynotPaul,

I’m sure I’m not the only one who hears you. Mother in laws for me have always been wise kind women (not all through.marriage obviously). Some of the best times, best lessons, and best experiences in my life have been with them. Always there to give advice, and not judging which is the fear we surely have meeting them.
I’ve learned a lot from them.
Thoughts and prayers are with you both and the families.

August 17, 2019 6:31 am

Weefra said:

“Mahe, was talking to mick earlier and he told me you were asking after me. Thanks for that. This site is beginning to feel like a family. Wtf, we are a family. HH”

I echo this 100% !!!

Let’s keep it this way
Welcome all, and make it the community we need and deserve.
And BP is the gel keeping it together with his lighthearted warm humour and friendlieness.

But we mustn’t get too soppy mind !!!

Hmm ?

Reading back, this MIT fella is trying to.use humour to make too many points.

Can I just remind you, MiT, I’m the only comedian in the village!! ??

Starting today folks. Simply choose one horse running anywhere in the UK or Ireland today and a £1 mythical stake will be placed on it at the starting price.

Please post selections ON THE PREVIOUS THREAD?

So if your horse wins at 5/1 you get a return of plus £5. If it loses you are minus £1 . It’s that simple.

If you’ve chosen a non runner you can change it up until the last race on the Saturday.

You can choose the same selection as another poster if you wish.

We will run until the Saturday on Scottish cup final week.

Competition aimed at providing a bit of fun but there’ll be a few “ spot” prizes along the away (Aintree and/or Cheltenham perhaps) and there will be a prize for the overall winner.

TET has kindly donated a set of real emerald rosary beads , made by his own fair hands.

The other main prize will be announced after we get going.

That’s it folks – as simple as that. Hopefully we can get at least a dozen or so. Some folk may be on holiday so I’ll leave it open until week 3 at which point it’s closed. Join late however, say week 2, you’ll start at minus £1. Week three start and you’ll be minus £2.

That’s it.

When posting your selection please clearly state the time and meeting to assist me.

I’m finding it very difficult to formulate my latest one due to lack of verification of some stuff, plus I don’t want to damage the site by going OTT. Thankfully MAHE forgot I’d promised it for today and put the above article up. Gives me the weekend to fine tune it.

What I will do is put a few horses up on a Saturday that I like, and why I like them, and you can perhaps risk a low stake high return bet on.Maybe a 20p each way Yankee or similar. ( £4.40p stake ?)

I’ll put them up on the naps thread at around 11am

If it’s just a one horse win only you’re after…. my nap today is up on the “ Monopoly “ thread. I think it’ll win. It’s 3/1

From memory your horse predictions were always freakishly right. I’m terrified that if I eventually bet on one I’ll jinx it for all ?

Maybe its wiser you share it all with me and no one else ?

August 17, 2019 7:09 am

That’s always the quandary when you get a tip. Do you share it or keep it to yourself. Quick way to lose friends if you blab and it loses. Quicker way to lose them if it wins and you’re suddenly like a man with ten arms at the bar!

My phone simply isn’t compatible with CQN. I just can’t post without chasing the page all over. Too frustrating.

So I’ll just need to win the SC comp ?

I remember a few years ago when PF AYR and I were neck and neck on the final day. I’d picked the 25-1 winner of the national, otherwise I’d have been nowhere. We were out for a bevvy on that day and as you know,he can be quite competitive even if with tongue in cheek. And there was only about £1.30 in it. He picks a loser and if I can find a winner at 1/3 or better, the glory is mine, all mine.

Me being me,I teased him. Told him I was going to pick a non-runner in a race towards the end of the afternoon. Put the pressure on him because McCoy had a cert in the last race of the day at Worcester. 1/2 or thereabouts. He was screwed unless he picked a winner!

He didn’t. But I’m not the kind of bloke to do that. I’d already picked a horse which lost. Just hadn’t told him,and he hadn’t checked back either. He went from dust to glory in seconds when I told him!

Btw,the cert won at 8/15. Oh well…

Jim the Tim

Morning Jim
I’m jumping between threads this morning and see your earlier reference to health issues. It’s worrying and saddens me to see other good folks struggling with these types of things.

Going back a long time now but I had an experience of what I guess was depression, and it wasn’t a vg experience. I’m not going into detail but fortunately a lady I worked with was qualified in counselling and helped me enormously. Strange thing was I didn’t know why I was feeling the way I was . Just came over me. Couldn’t face work, felt incredibly low . I think part of it was down to my personality. I was always the go to guy. Problem? Twisty will fix it…. the seemingly tough guy without a care in the world. I think I bottled everything up for so many years, my own fears and my own unhappiness with the way I’d behaved over a long number years, it was eating at me.

Anyway with that help I got over it and tried to change a few things.

Point is Jim, I’m no councillor or expert but my experience was that speaking to someone helped me so much. I hope you’ve someone there you can turn to if necessary when you’re feeling the way I did. It can be a lonely place!!

No need to even reply to this if you feel you don’t want to but just be assured there are people out there
who can help.

Hail Hail Jim…..

Ha. I wish I could remember who it was but on CQN, on the final week, I was a few ££ behind. The guy in the lead could have easily stymied me by choosing the same selection as me, but sportingly didn’t and my last selection won at 7/1 giving me the title. As I say I wish I could think who it was….. but memory gone!!

August 17, 2019 7:51 am

Twists/ Jim,

Not sure what’s happening, as I’m still days behind.

But if anyone is feeling down, missing a lost one, or depressed . If you have Netflix, watch After Life. It has genuinely helped me through a sad time. Funny, sad, funny sad but always meaningful. It’s a unique genius of a programme. Beautiful. I was always reluctant about Ricky Gervais and his arrogant atheism, but that doesn’t apply here.
Everyone should see it.
You laugh, you cry, you think, you laugh, you cry. Through all 6 episodes. Can’t recommend it highly enough. just watched the whole thing again tonight and loved it even more.

After reading back. This is generic and not aimed at anyone, specifically
Hopefully this is helpful.
What is a blog?
Well for me, it’s to engage with people, hopefully share opinions, have a bit of fun and maybe be educated.
This blog, in my opinion, is fabulous for that
The key for me is we all different, some of us are digital, some analogue, some F.M. some M.W etc.
Therefore we won’t see eye to eye, with everyone. Don’t take it personally, it’s how life works.
I always say if 2 people agree all the time, one is either scared or sycophantic.
The exception to this, is my wife, who warns me, when we have a discussion, do you want to be right or be happy…….?
I’ve learned through time, it’s best to choose happy. ??
