The Main Event-Prelude.

Quick quiz to waken you up on a fine Friday morning.

Who am I?

I was born in Edinburgh at the end of WWII. I am one of Scotland’s greatest ever sportsmen, and almost certainly it’s greatest ever boxer-despite some illustrious competition. I was ABA Champion in my division in my late teens, and turned professional at the age of twenty.

I won my first 33 professional bouts in the next four years before fighting for the European title, suffering a points defeat to the reigning champion.

This wasn’t going to stop me being World Champion though!

Only the following year I fought reigning WBA champion Ismael Laguna in his own back yard in Puerto Rico, and neither he nor the sweltering heat were going to stop me. Top of the world,Ma! I’m World Champion!

Six fights later and I was the Undisputed World Champion!!!

Only a knee to the balls from Roberto Duran took the title from me,a low blow which is still talked about today as one of the most controversial bouts in the always controversial sport of boxing. I was no stranger to Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of boxing, but that may have soured my memories of it. He refused to give me a rematch too, despite being so ordered on TWO occasions to do so by the WBA

I won my next fourteen fights, many against former or future champions-including Jim Watt,Leonard Tavares and Carlos Ortiz-winning the British and European belts on the way, before my next title fight. In Japan!

Sadly I lost that one on points to local champion Guts Ishimatsu. I only fought once more after that-a successful defence of my European title-before I decided to retire at the age of 30.

Lastly,I was inducted into The International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2000,and I’m the only living British boxer in there!

Who am I? I’m Ken Buchanan,of course! But you knew that, didn’t you?

So what was all that about, you might well ask? Well, there are many of us who still hold Ken in the highest esteem-as well as many, like my Papa, who are sadly no longer with us. My Papa was born in 1892,so he had been around a bit. He sure knew his boxing. And so does site member TWISTSNTURNS.

And guess what? TWISTSNTURNS is meeting Ken in person next week-and Ken has agreed to answer some of your questions! It isn’t often that any of us get the chance to ask a question of an all-time great,an Undisputed World Champion,a favoured son. So take advantage of it and post your questions for TWISTSNTURNS to ask Ken.

Just be grateful it isn’t me doing the asking, cos I’d make an arse of it,get all flustered and tongue-tied!

Fittingly, there is a statue of the great man to be unveiled shortly, sited in his home city. It is a long overdue recognition of a legend,a man whom Roberto Duran didn’t want to fight twice! I’ll be sure to pay homage to him next time I visit there.

Morning all
Bobby – fine article and tribute to a boxing legend. As any questions will be interspersed with general chat I’ll cut n paste any as the day progresses and put them into a separate file somewhere. ?
I’ll start with a question I already know the answer to but many of you won’t.

As we are a football blog, i need to start with a football question:
You were a Hibby supporter in your youth yet ended up a jambo!! How on earth did that come about?

September 6, 2019 7:21 am

That’s one question off my list!

Really really grateful for this,mate.

Morning BP

Hope you’re feeling a bit better this morning fella but even if you are, get on that blower to your GP first thing. I’ll keep annoying you until you do?

Think about it …. nothing to lose – lots to gain ??

My first question for Ken…

You won the ABA when you were just 19,and that was a tremendous achievement, especially back then. Yet I don’t think you boxed at the Commonwealth Games-you might have been too young in 1962,even though Perth was only up the road from you(!)-or The Olympics in Tokyo in 1964.

Why do you think that was?

He’s very grateful for everyone’s concern and best wishes,of course. He did name names, but you know who you are. He intends to take a short break from the site, meantime.

I’ll still be in regular contact with him, just to keep him up to date with what we are saying about him behind his back!!!

I see Marian Shved has picked up an ankle injury whilst on International duty. A wee bit of a downside these injuries, happens every now and again. He picked it up in training so I suppose it could just as easily have happened at Lennoxtown. Here’s hoping it’s nothing too serious. I would like to him get a run of games.

Second question to Ken

How did it feel to have Ali on your undercard-and how glad were you that he laughed at your chalk moment?

September 6, 2019 1:09 pm

Hope your health improves rapidly. I am well on the mend now, but has taken the best part of a year to get to here. Trust your GP and obey his instructions. Good luck buddy.

Ken Buchanan was a great technician.
Greatly underrated in his native country.
If he had been more of a reflection of the Scottish girrintaethem culture would he have been more heralded?
In the USA on tv boxing shows he is often recalled as the great Ken Buchanan so he obviously has a place in boxing history.

Twists n turns
September 6, 2019 2:15 pm

Fan a tic

Indeed he was a great technical boxer. At least one of the times he deserted that to adopt the “ gerrintaethum” approach, it cost him.

He’d worked out that despite losing to Duran, he’d beat him next time around by going back to his more technical style of jabbing and moving, in and out.

As Bobby wrote in his article though, he never got the chance. Duran would’ve known what was coming second time around.

Was kinda like Ali v Smokin’ Joe. One a master craftsman and one a slogger. You don’t go toe to toe with a slogger.

A thing of beauty
September 6, 2019 2:18 pm

I love boxing especially the era of hearns, hagler, sugar ray and Duran but I have no recollection of seeing Ken Buchanan. I remember a bit about Jim watt but not much. I’ve read the four kings book about the first four mentioned and know Duran had “hands of stone.” What i would like to ask ken is – who of all the fighters he faced had the hardest punch?

A thing of beauty
September 6, 2019 2:20 pm

Also, has he never been involved in training fighters. I thought Alex Arthur has all the tools to be a really good fighter but it went wrong. Maybe with someone like ken guiding him he could’ve challenged the very best.

Twists n turns
September 6, 2019 2:39 pm

The Ken v Jim Watt fight was supposed to be an easy one for Ken, given he’d already been in the ring with the likes of Duran, and Jim was just a novice in comparison. Didn’t turn out that way though. Jim Watt was a vg boxer and took Ken all the way.

Of course Jim went on to fulfil his potential by claiming the world title.

Great clips of the Fabulous four…

September 6, 2019 3:30 pm

I grew up in an era where Scottish football was more competitive, both domestically and internationally. The big two in Scotland could be challenged consistently by teams such as Kilmarnock, Dundee(both of them) and Hibs and Hearts occasionally. Even teams such as Dunfermline under both Jock Stein and Willie Cunningham could beat the big two on occasion. These teams could all compete in Europe with Dundee and Alan Gilzean getting to the semi finals of the European cup. Dunfermline whacked Valencia 6-2 and Dundee United pushed the money laden cream of Italian soccer.
Forlornly, I long for those days to come back but the past is, exactly that, in the past! Today we have Celtic and a wannabee Sevco who lead the challenge in Scotland. There will be the odd game in which the like of Aberdeen or Hearts might take a point or two off of the big two and that may count in cup ties, but, in general, the big two will triumph. I believe the challenge from Kilmarnock disappeared when Clarke took the Scotland job.
So where I am going with this? Yes, I long for a more competitive league but what we have now is a false form of competition. The challenge to the champions is not a fair one. It is created by financial doping of Sevco; favours by the ref community, and a compliant media that should be asking questions. The governing body is either neutered or complicit in creating this artificial competition.
I know it would be good for Scottish football if the old type of competition came back but that cannot happen, largely because of economics. So it is either Celtic or Sevco for the league title for the foreseeable future.
The Kent loan/transfer is the latest scandal for an organization that seems to be trading while insolvent. Just where is the money coming from to keep this entity afloat? Loans, equity investments from Directors have to be short term strategies. Who is funding this business and why? What influence does the club have over the refs and the SFA? The answers to these questions may show no malfeasance and only fair, if misguided, behavior………..just fans supporting their club as we do. However, these questions are not being asked far less answered! For this reason I would be suspicious of Sevco winning the league. What is Mr King’s end game here? Is it to build Sevco to a point where he can sell it off as a bling enterprise for a foreign entrepreneur? Or is he doing a Dermot here and culling annual interest from a loan to the club? Either way he needs a league win and the possibility of entry into the group stages of the CL to realise his mysterious objectives.
So, Yes, it would be good for Scottish football if the honours were shared around more BUT only if the competition is HONEST and FAIR.
I do not place much value on winning nine in a row or even ten. How the league is won is more important. For this reason I want Celtic(or anyone other than Sevco) to win the league. If the above questions can be answered satisfactorily then it will be time for Sevco to compete for the championship.

Great post

September 6, 2019 3:44 pm

Good post.
With all the chicanery of Scottish football it’s hard to see who benefits from such outwith the Celtic boards profit’s and the useless blazers at the SFA
Football has moved on since the days of competitive Scottish teams on the European stage while our national game goes backwards at an alarming pace.
Starting to think the only requirement for a coaching badge at the SFA is the ability to say getintaehim, blooter it or gie him a dunt .
Meanwhile the clowns in blazers who have presided over such a shambles continue to reward themselves for abject failure.
Wont be long until all spl tv matches are shown in black and white with no sound.

A question for Ken ….

I have heard you were a great fighter …. but are you good enough to take on Tosh McKinley… who, legends has it, landed one on the otherwise untouchable King of Kings, which is sort of like hitting a shadow. Did you ever hit a shadow?

What did you do to end up in jail? (I am assuming that you did, as I cant think of any other place where one could enter a Hib, and end up an Hearts fan)?

Do you have a good sense of humor? I really hope so, or else I am going to get a real thumping!

Never been much into the boxing, back in the day when Ali was around I quite liked it, but it just started to bore me and never really paid much attention to it after that.
I have always said that if the huns had held their hands up when they were caught for the EBT’s and player registration scams, there wouldn’t be the hatred that is prevalent today, but huns being huns just couldn’t do that could they, so eff them.

Mike in Toronto
September 6, 2019 4:01 pm

I dont have the zombies becasue of their EBT usage … it is a symptom of a much larger psychopathy on their part, which includes a hatred of our kind …which is much worse…

so, hating them for EBT’s would be like hating Hitler because he was a bad painter

With the blog being interspersed with boxing and football today – reading Rebus’ post there I was just thinking back to a few fights that were fixed. There are plenty. Read up on La Motta v Fox in the late 40’s. The mob ‘controlled ‘ that fight.

We have our own mob in football in Scotland. Always been thus. Always will.

The SFA, the referees, the media. The mob.

I’ll tell you the problem. When Brendan R had us so far ahead of the huns, the fix becomes impossible. Close run games are easier to fix. One pugilist being so far ahead of the other not so easy.

That aforementioned fight I referred to nearly went tits up for the mob, because La Motta was so far ahead of Fox, he’d exhausted him without trying too hard. La Motta had to literally carry Fox around the ring just to keep him in the fight!

Then he just lay against the ropes letting Fox who was fekked, hit him. Eventually the ref stopped the fight.

Did we allow the huns back into it deliberately or through negligence?

That gap closing up will make it a lot easier now for the mob to get their result. If we draw them in the cup semi assuming we both win our next tie, I’ve absolutely no doubt we will see the fix in full flow.

Regarding the EBTs & player registrations business men like Murray, Whyte and Green will do what is their best interests. Even if that means taking measures to the limit. What really sickens me is Regan and Doncaster. Who are supposed to be above all that jiggery pokery. They knew all that was going on. And then they stunk to high heaven with LNS & the 5 way agreement. They are actually worse in my eyes than the chancers at Rangers/TRFC.

The Exiled Tim
September 6, 2019 4:26 pm

Regan acted for the sfa and what they stood for. so he would do what was needed to facilitate the huns, it’s really that simple.
Doncaster on the other hand will only do what he is told to do by the clubs, he will have little to no authority in his own right, the 5WA for instance, he will have had no input into that agreement without the say so of the clubs, all the clubs, anyone saying otherwise are morons, some even go as far to say that some members of the SPL board were on holiday when the agreement was drafted and ratified so they didn’t know anything about it, sorry, that’s an insult to a moron, morons are not that stupid, the agreement was made with the full knowledge of the clubs, all the clubs and especially those on the SPL board.
Doncaster does what he is told, it’s really that simple 😉

September 6, 2019 4:36 pm

TET< I realise Regan is the big daddy in this but Doncaster knew about the registration irregularities as they were happening. He it was also who gifted the new club the honours of the old club. The titles were in his gift so it would seem. It's disgraceful how the other clubs, especially Celtic, kept quiet through all of this.

The Exiled Tim
September 6, 2019 4:48 pm

Do you honestly believe that he acted off his own back ?
If you did and some of the clubs were not happy about it, why didn’t they act ?
If you believe that Doncaster knew about the registrations, do you believe that he kept this info from the clubs knowing full well that the info at some point would come out ?
Trust me, I know how it works and Doncaster only did what he did with the full knowledge and support of all the clubs.

September 6, 2019 4:56 pm

The Exiled Tim
(Trust me, I know how it works and Doncaster only did what he did with the full knowledge and support of all the clubs.)
And if he didn’t know he would be shown as being unfit for the purpose of his employment and therefor fired for incompetence.

September 6, 2019 4:59 pm

I think a lot of people were wondering where the EBTs lawfulness would end up. HMRC lost the first two tribunals. But the bogeyman was the side letters regardless. Remember one of the main men at Ibrox running the EBTs scheme and registrations was also sitting at Hampden. I am convinced Doncaster knew of this (There can be no doubt Regan knew). Maybe this aspect was kept hushed up to begin with. Until LNS revealed it all. How they squirmed out of that!
