Results,Recovery Times,Shared Responsiblity

Morning,all.

Apologies for the delay in today’s article. Unforeseen circumstances,as Mystic Meg once said to explain cancelling a show. Anyway, last night was an excellent result, especially given that there were a number of changes-some by choice and others unavoidable-to our regular starting eleven.

So with the above in mind, what could be more timely than this article from LIBERO? Read on…

***

I can’t put down a book I started reading just two days ago.

It’s called The Straight Dope by Aussie journalist Chip Le Grand.

He dissects what could be the biggest sports doping-related scandal in the world, which claimed virtually all but one squad player of the Essendon ‘Bombers’ Aussie Rules footy team was given direct injections of non-approved substances around three years back: It’s a gripping, ripping read.

How it relates to Celtic is on the point of player recovery; a point raised by Lenny in a recent media conference. To me, a key point for us now is at what cost do we keep playing the same players over and over?

In Le Grand’s book, Aussie fitness and conditioning experts reckon three days is not enough to recover from a 2-hr AFL match; they reckon ten days is a proper rest and recovery period. GPS data estimates that AFL players – positions dependent – run an average of 13-20kms per game (along with jaw-jarring head and body impacts). EPL footballers tend to run just under 12kms.

What would Ryan Christie’s numbers look like I wonder?

The dilemma for Celtic – playing 3 games per week sometimes – is we all want results but we don’t have adequate recovery times to put our best and freshest 11 on the park every single game. That’s where shared responsibility must come in. It’s surely why we carry a 90million Euro ‘squad’.

Neilly reckons that making anywhere round three team changes has an adverse impact on results. Surely this tells us our overall team preparation and strategies – as well as individual readiness to play at the highest levels – has room to improve?

At CFC, we have the luxury of the best squad and, surely, best players in the league?

Injuries aside, why can’t we put out a second string 11 from Bain, Gordon, Bauer, Bitton, Hendry, O’Connor, Taylor, Ntcham, Rogic, Kouassi, Hayes, Griffiths, Morgan, Sinky, Bayo etc…and be able to beat a St Mirren or a Hamilton both with squads with fractional cost and quality?

Sure, it’s probably not as simple as I’m stating it – but it’s physically unsustainable for Neil’s first 14 to always get us results we’ve now become conditioned to expect, and its financially reckless to have too many high paid second stringers who can’t slot in to relieve the evergreens.

Apologies to everyone, but I still say the article above is timely, based on last night.

Maybe that’s where Neil got the idea from…

Haste ye back? Too true, mate. Christmas dinner disnae cook itself, you know.

I agree, if the second string are not good enough why are we still paying them over inflated wages, it doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.
Get players in who are good enough and can compete on a level basis for a place, I have been saying this for years, the squad size still needs reduced drastically and youth should be used far more.

Question for the Res 12 folks.
We all know that the club are going to do nothing, nada, zilch, they have proved that over time, we also know that the SFA are going to do the same, sweet SFA, of both those things we are all agreed, had it not been that way progress would have been made as it is, it’s a dead end.
Question is, why not take what you have to the fraud squad in London ?
There is nothing to lose, it’s going nowhere.

Nir Bitton Contract is up next Summer,he in my opinion is good midfielder to have in your squad,so hopefully the club will give him a new contract.

Why thank you gentlemen 🙂

This actually feels quite refreshing !!

Was pleasantly surprised at how well Morgan performed last night – great energy and effort. Really settled into a good game once he scored his goal.

Also – Olivier Ntcham – what can you say? Me and Wee BGFC sat up and watched the game again once we got in last night (so 2:00 am bed-time – don’t tell Mrs BGFC). Some of Ntcham’s touches were velvet – worthwhile following him in slow-motion to appreciate how he caresses the ball.

Look at the build up to Wee Mikey’s goal – the one-two lay-off to Johnston was just pyoor gallus. Ntcham’s calm, slow stroll towards the goal never changed even as he watched the ball hit the back of the net – super-cool. We need to get him in the team and performing regularly; this guy oozes class.

Oli was by a country mile my MoM, he like everyone else had a couple of moments but by and large he controlled the game.
It was brilliant to see Mikey coming on and to top it off with a goal was the icing on the cake for me, he is a special player.
Great problems for the manager to have.

BMCUWP – agree it was timely given Lenny refreshed with four 2nd string faces then gave big Nir (new contract stick on pls Timbhoy!) and Griff a run. Grand as he is, I’d like to see big Fraz rested to give Craig or Scott some glove game. One flaw in Olly’s fluent form is he’s the midfield equiv of a ‘fixie’ bike – one speed. HH

Hey BGFC.

JimmynotPaul – cheers, great idea – I will do that!

Having just given up on CQN, I was thinking – “OK, what will I do with all of this new spare time I’ll have? Go walks? Exercise? Spend more time with Mrs BGFC?” You’ve just saved me from all of those 🙂
