Merry Christmas-Part One

I see that the SMSM have stuck their nose into the ongoing spat between The Green Brigade and Rod the Mod.

Stirring the shit,more like.

It’s also amazing how everyone has jumped on the big bad GB bandwagon, everyone has assumed that the Eff Off banner was aimed at him because of his tweet congratulating Boris. I don’t believe it was,but I do believe his tweet was the trigger for the banner aimed at Rod the Mod. He has had a couple of public goes at the GB in the past few weeks and I believe that the eff off Rod was because of that, but everyone has decided without any idea whatsoever that it was because of the Boris tweet, because it suited their anti GB agenda.

This is coming from those who are at great pains to tell everyone that Celtic are ” A Club Open to All ” Kinda against the ethos, isn’t it-having a go at the GB for stating what they believe? It’s highly unlikely that anyone is going to adopt the views of the GB yet they still use this ‘open to all’ as a stick to beat them with.

I find this a very sad state of affairs when one section of the support openly berates another section of the support. It matters not what the GB believe, but we are being asked to condemn them because the always need something to be offended at something brigade are again offended?

It’s pathetic IMO, some people need to grow up.

I didn’t see all of the game on Saturday so I really can’t comment too much but from what I did see, some aspects of our coaching is leaving a lot to be desired. I fully understand all the we keep winning argument, but in reality we should be-we have by far the better players so if they weren’t winning serious questions would be getting asked! A few of our results have been far far closer than they should have been, but we will just have to believe that our coaches can see where the problems lie and address them.

Fitting square pegs into round holes only work for so long. We need to stop this and play our players where they are comfortable and stop asking them to do things that are alien to them so that certain players can be accommodated. Better teams than on Saturday will exploit this.

Sentinel celts,
For whatever reason I’ve starting commenting on here and Celtic noise site. Not something I’ve spend lots of time doing previously, not to say never, but still I’ve appreciated the welcome and differing points of view. You’re a passionate crowd. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2020.

NAPS UPDATE

It looks as though we had 3 winners on Saturday.

The usual suspects Jimmy Not Paul and Big Packy both knocked in another winner, at 1/1 and 9/4 respectively, and Cosy Corner Bhoy was ‘ not so sleepy’ as he had a tasty 9/2 winner.

Well done to all 3.

It appears we have 3 punters who will choose another on Boxing Day:

Jim the Tim had a non runner and both The Gombeen man and The Exiled Tim had chosen at the subsequently abandoned Thurles meeting.

I’ll update the table following the Boxing Day results.

Twists n turns

PS

If you had a non runner or chose at the abandoned Thurles meeting and I’ve missed you for some reason , in the words of Corporal Jones – don’t panic. Just choose on Boxing Day.

If anyone didn’t make a selection for any other reason then I’m afraid it’s like the wife’s grub. Tough.

TET; having watched the re-run on CeltTV, I observe another coupla reasons for why our games seem tighter than they really are: 1) Pussyfooting and 2) Making Space. (Apart from bad luck close shaves in the old shots at goal milarkey!)
Pussyfooting; folk used to complain about BRs tippy tappy at the back regime; well it’s actually still there, but its done by our mids and forwards in our opponents half; we just changed where we choose to overpass and overplay until the tip-tap, taps out. Critically, as nimble as guys like Eddy, Jamesy, Rogic and Boli are, they all favour tight passes in too tight areas. Compared to Engerland, unless their pitches are 30% bigger, many forwards are more direct at goal and don’t often try to walk it in to the net.
Course, you can only have direct shots at goal if you find or create good enough room, which brings me to: 2) Space.
Because of our superior ball-retention skills, other teams often stand off us while we get into that nice rhythm of possession; thing is, that invariably allows them to fall deep and pack their half which creates space problems. Again, top EPL sides’ attackers work hard to create space BUT in the right PLACE (ie with a chance of shot at goal). Space too far from goal or too wide only leads to more tippy tappy to engineer an opening. And the laws of averages suggest dribble-driven plays break down more often than they come off.
It’s either this or SPFL teams simply defend and mark way better than their EPL counterparts??

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

LIBERO

You probably saw more of the match than I did-those highlights I linked were shockingly brief. What they seemed to show was that our decision making at the final ball was very poor. Whether it was going for the shot when the pass was on or vice-versa.

I was intending to make that the main focus of tomorrow’s article, that our players are showing signs of mental fatigue. Probably still will. These are really the kind of errors players make when they are running on empty. It’s a worry for us,quite definitely, and has become more apparent with each game over the last month or so.

We need to get these two games out of the way,six points in the bag,and relax, refresh, recharge.

Twists n turns

We really need to stop being so wasteful when we have opened up defences. James F and Eddie were particularly lax on Sat.

Libero

Again BMCUWP, that’s another peril of having a big squad but not enough quality to give the manager the faith to play full rotation
We end up with players who are effectively too drained. The squad carries a lot of passengers, which I hope will change in Jan.
Likely that we will lose Craig Gordon due to marginalising him; didnt do too much wrong until we got sniff of the xlnt Frazer F. Shame a few more havent took the hint about being marginalised; we could free up dosh if Hendry, Kouassi, Miller moved elsewhere.
Whoever we get as a forward bolsterer, just pray he’s much more of a shoot on sight character.

Coneybhoy

watched a fair chunk of the Shef Wed game yesterday. Jordan Rhodes moves about as much as an iceberg. Funny thing is though; all those low balls into the box we never convert – he’d bury them. Could have a super-sub role on loan to us. Classic poacher

big packy

there is no room for complacency on sunday, they will be up for this bigtime, what a feather it will be in seething gerrards cap if he can beat us at parkhead, and make no mistake, he will be aided and abetted by the officials,, they are desperate to beat us, fair means or foul, for gods sake lenny play our strongest team, and in their favored positions.hh.

Twists n turns

If we get control of the middle of the park we will win. They’re defensively weak when players are playing quick passes around them.

Kent aside, their attacking and defensive midfielders are bang average.

Starve the midfield and Morelos is ineffective. Allow them to control the play as we did in the final, and we will lose, and, Morelos will score if he’s presented with the same number of chances he had at Hampden.

Auldheid

On coaching. Why does it take ages to take a throw in and what percentage do we surrender possession as a result.

Throw ins can be the metronome for the pace we set. Hearts did that in first 20 minutes at Tynecastle.

The ball takes too long to be returned to players and then it gets passed from one player to another.

By that tme every player is covered increasing the chances of losing possession.

My main complaint when watching.

On missed chances: both Edouard and Forrest tried to place shots that went just wide or straight at the goalie and that was down to the angle of the foot when shooting. Just a bit of calibration needed.

big packy

TWISTY, agree with all of that, but its not a level playing field if you get my drift?

big packy

I used to hate the new years day game if we got beat, correct me if im wrong, but back then, late 60s early seventies, the next day its back to work, and get slaughtered by your hun workmates, dont think it was a holiday back then ,TWISTY will know?

Coneybhoy

Twists and Turns

I agree on the midfield but disagree with some comments around tinterweb that we need more didg in the midfield to control it. The problem at Hampden, for me, was the rush to play a final pass or to try elaborate triangle in the early stages. Didn’t come off and we lost confidence and dropped back.

watching the game back; any time we actually connected 2 passes , we were on top of their defence with ease.

They are technically not that good but do put a of energy into 1st halfs. Might have been on CQN earlier but I agree that they run out of steam after 60 odd mins. Keep the ball more in the first 30 mins and play percentages and we will be set up to batter them in the second half.

Cannae wait; early flight in, huns game, meet a mate to give him the Pogues single malt I sourced for him in Dublin; meet another mate who is home from Singapore; fly home; last couple of hours in the GAA to celebrate (hopefully)

CONEYBOY – if the Rhodes fella is a once-prolific yet immobile lump, we could add Gary Hooper now at Wellington Phoenix or the unattached Tony Stokes to the list. Surely Peter the Purseman will let Nick and Lenny aim higher than that!?

jimthetim53

Packy, from what I remember we got two days holiday at New Year but only one at Christmas, so it was back to work on Boxing Day.

Up until the 50s & early 60s in Scotland, New Year was the bigger event by the majority protestant population.

After the reformation the celebration of Christmas was frowned upon especially in Scotland. Too Catholicy.

Think about it – Christ-Mass.

Then the Americans got hold of it ! 🙂

Now they are ditching it! ” Happy Holidays!”

big packy

HI JIM, knew there was one day back then, when we had to go back to work the next day, too catholicy, that about sums it up, what are you up to today.

jimthetim53

Packy, I’ve got everything done for Christmas so going down to the pub for an hour in the afternoon. Looking forward to part 2 of A Christmas Carol tonight on BBC1. It’s the best version I’ve seen. Scrooge isn’t just a crabbit old miser. He is pure evil. 🙁

He even said the F word a couple of times last night. Don’t know what Charles Dickens would say about that 🙂

I was trying, without success, to find a link for this. And I’ll be honest … I was too lazy to go through all the game summaries to see if it was true. But during a recent game, a stat flashed up on the screen which,I believe, said Sevco had scored more goals in the last 15 minutes than any other team in the SPL. If correct, it would call into question the idea that they fade after 60 minutes.

Great posts fella’s,you both read my thoughts and saved me from posting the same.
Lets hope things transpire the way we would like but I have given it some thought and if we were to lose,it may not be such a bad thing as I believe that if we trounce the Huns then Pistol Pete will be loathe to open the biscuit tin for some much needed QUALITY players that Neil can feel he can rely on to do a job and perhaps get rid of some of the deadwood who seem not to be up to his standards.
For starters,I would reluctantly release Sinky (if he is not going to feature)which would free up £30k+ as I am convinced Lawwell only triggered the year option on his contract so he could get a transfer fee for him back in the summer which is an appalling way to treat a player who has never caused us any problems and who is a model professional.
There are also a few others who the manager does not fancy so if they cannot be moved on we will just have to bite the bullet and let their contracts run down.
it’s long past the time that Dermot Desmond told our CEO to butt out of team affairs and to concentrate on counting his millions of beads.
Hail Hail.

big packy

IRISHBOY, cheers for that, can see your point about maybe if we lose it may not be such a bad thing, but can we not play very badly, so that pedro might think about opening the pursestrings, but still beat the bassas by one goal? agree about sinky,hh.

Mario Bertolini

Looking at last couple of games it seems to me too much faffing about when we have the ball. slow play passing back, sideways. There needs to be a strategy whereby we are able to shoot outside the box. We seem to create loads of chances, by rights we should be into double figure goals every game, wish I knew the answer. Eddis goal was a beauty Ajer running from own half quick passing boom. I think get Ajer into that position more often as he seems to freak opposition when he makes those direct runs, coz nobody else does.

just saw Rhodes mentioned in the press and serendipitously, he pops up on the TV. Scored a hattrick last week so may not be in Stokes bracket. Sometimes a January loan can work (not often though)

I’m basing my view on the Lc final mostly and also Ibrox earlier. Don’t watch them much. I do remember a few late goals early in the season for them which will keep the stat up but not recently.

Libero Twists n Turns
Posted after the game that the opposition are packing the box more so perhaps the forwards are struggling to find the shot?
There were plenty of blocks on what seemed good chances
Our early season goalscoring may have been down to teams setting two lines to stop us tippy tapping
Through them.
As Lennon likes to get the ball forward early players like JF,Ed and Elynoussi were good enough to create space one on one.
At points yesterday Aberdeen had a line of 7defenders in their own box.
It has been a common sight in recent weeks which is why our games despite dominating possession have been a struggle to score in.
Also taking out Christie who is adept at forcing defenses to move in the centre has been nullified by a coaching decision to play him wide right.
In short teams have adjusted and our coaches seem not to have noticed.
On defensive space when your two defensive mids lack the sense or discipline for their role leaving huge gaps it’s what makes the game easier for opponents when we do not have the ball.
On attacking space neither Brown or McGregor have any impact.
Brown does slightly better with his running and aggressive instinct but McGregor is becoming a man down.
McGregor who at one time showed very good pass and move instincts has become the ultimate BR midfielder.
He plays safe passes sideways and back then stands still like his job is over.
His tackling is non existent
He has been poor for a year now and despite the decline in his impact on games seems to be favored by coaches.
2 goals and one assist this season is testament to his level of contribution.
The worrying thing was on Sunday the coaches myopia towards him showed when Ntcham who had been playing well was subbed instead.
We more resemble a collection of individuals rather than a team with a strategy or system.

fan-a-tic

Twists n Turns
(If we get control of the middle of the park we will win.)
And there in lies the issue.
Huns learned from the first game where our high press negated them.
It was Brown and McGregor’s best outing because they held position for a change.
But the reality is we had scored from our only chance, a brilliant piece of play from Johnston and Ed.
We only started creating chances when Ntcham came on.
So unless there is a realistic approach to this game and not an assumption that the cup final was just an off day it could be difficult.
We have the better players so let’s hope they are played in a way to maximize their talent.

You would hope between them that our coaches will see the problems and rectify them, we are gonna find out soon enough.
Right, off into town, it’s gonna be choka but needs must, laters
Win the midfield win the game, that used to always be my parting shot in a post, how true it is.

Good evening all from the Star bar. Gerrintaethum Celtic!!!!

lrishboy

big packy,
The point I was was making, which you,in the main understood, was that there are no half measures where Lawwell is concerned.
Even if we beat that mob by a solitary goal and we go into the winter break 8 points clear but having played a game more then it will be very hard/nigh on impossible to convince him we need to strengthen to maintain our lead and to give ourselves the best possible chance to win the league.
Once(God forbid) the league is lost, due to his parsimony, all hell will break loose and no amount of remorse or deflection on his part will save him,he WILL reap what he has sown.
He has previous for this where we have lost titles due to his interference but he survived because there wasn’t the mythical 10 riding on the outcome.
The problem we have is that he is calling the shots( unless his master’s voice decrees otherwise) and unfortunately for us the pair of them, for all their individual wealth, are both as tight as two coats of paint !
Hail Hail.

Margaret McGill

Never thought I’d hear the day from Celtic supporters that getting beat from the huns might be a good thing because its the only way our CEO MIGHT open the biscuit tin for the January transfer window. FFS!
IMHO the hun hoards dont really believe that their beloved betrayed ascendancy vanguard is “back yet”. A win on Sunday at Celtic Park will push them through that belief threshold. How does the old adage go? “No surrender”.

Losing to Der Hun would be a disaster.
Our frugality and planning is based on them being nearly men

I don’t think we will lose the game at the weekend, we may not win it but we won’t lose it, it’s in the stars, I honestly believe that the players will see us Ok, I hate to say this but I think that again the coaching will be flawed but our better players will prevail, I hope I am wrong, but I can’t change what I believe.
