A Bewildering Day I Could Have Done Without!

Everyone seems to think of Partick Thistle as the plucky little underdogs, the team of choice for the neutral or non-aligned footballers. Or as the butt of the occasional joke, like everyone knowing them as Partick Thistle Nil. They obviously weren’t where I was on 23 October 1971.

I wasn’t long turned eight years old,but was already a four year veteran at Celtic Park. But that was it,I’d never yet been to an away match apart from Clyde,Kilmarnock or Ayr. This wasn’t just an away match,it was a Cup Final! You’ll gather that all my Christmases had come at once when my Dad told me I was going to the game on the Saturday, and I was getting increasingly excited as the week dragged on.

Partick Thistle Nil? No-one told their players that on the day. We were, admittedly, missing a few of our regulars but still had a team available to take comfortable care of the game. Ronnie Glavin gave Jimmy a dull one early on,subbed by Jim Craig, and of course they were four up by half time.

I’d never even seen Celtic lose a match before. Ever. And certainly not this heavily, and by half time too. I do know that the expression-WTF?-didn’t occur to me,but I’m quite sure that they did for most of the crowd-even the Thistle fans!

So fast forward about 25-30 years, and I’m in the company-not for the last time-of one of the goalscorers that day. Bobby Lawrie. His daughter was the barmaid in my local and he finally opened up a wee bit about how surprised they were too at events. He said he would never forget that day-I assured him that I wouldn’t either!

So we play them again today, and for the second time in a cup competition this season. Last time,it was 5-0 to the good guys, with Scott Sinclair scoring and more importantly,Jeremie Frimpong making his debut. I’ll take that or similar today too, thank you. But let’s not be churlish about things. Partick Thistle thoroughly deserved their victory that day,and those players deserved their day in the sun,or maybe a wee chat now and again thirty years later down the pub. I’m finally over it,I guess. But here’s a marvellous article I unearthed which gives you some flavour of being a Partick Thistle player that day.

How did Miller miss it? ?

1-1 HT. Not the best day at the office thus far. Griff scores ? ?. We have huffed and puffed a bit around the box. A lot of flicks and attempts at one-twos not working. Think that was a Pen when Frimpong pushed off the ball. Defence hasn’t improved and luckily Kenny misser does what he does best and missed an open goal when left totally unmarked in the box – again no one tracked the run.
Better things 2nd period?

The trio of Ntcham,Rogic and McGregor are all doing Thistles defensive work by crowding the space.
Hard to see any shape other than crowding the field of play.
Take either Rogic or McGregor off and put Arzani on wing.
Ntcham has hit some good forward passes while Rogic and McGregor not contributing.
Griffs goal came from a defenders clearance after Rogic failed to control a good pass from Ed in box.
The fact that 40 years old Miller has had 2 good chances is a testament to our defensive frailties.

Gordon 64.
The celebration was to do with Twitter.
People were saying to him on his Twitter feed, during the week, that his Celtic career was over, as we had a new striker, he put a GIF up, which was the same as his celebration.
He’s not listening to all the white noise.

PS. Meant to add that expensive wee break in the Sun has done the team the world of good. You’d never guess we’d ever been away for a winter jolly, good to see we have maintained our consistency.

Where was Thistles wee winter Jolly?

Ahh well Big Julien fecks up a nothing long ball into our half. PT player runs on to ball challenged by Frimpong in the box, ref awards Pen. PT score. Dodgy call for pen. Not the 1st time Julien has been caught out like that.

Final score 2-1 Celtic. Not really much to say – poor all round considering we have just returned from a break where we were supposed to re charge the batteries but judging that performance we didn’t. Thistle were as expected an average championship team.

He had a 5 minute cameo where he showed good skill in the second half and apart from that not controlling a great Ed pass that led to defender passing to Griff for goal he really only crowded the central area.
He like others seems unsure of his role in the team and we are not good enough to accommodate a player who has the odd good moment.
He has wonderful skill but is to infrequently involved.
