Still Up In The Air

Morning,all.
Interesting weekend, you might say. The weekend of course is when politics and world events take a back seat to relaxation and recreation, particularly the sporting calendar. Not this weekend,oh no. This weekend was all about the politics and world events, and sports were virtually wiped out.

The reason? A tiny wee virus previously confined to horseshoe bats in South East Asia apparently, now known to us as COVID-19.

https://yubanet.com/scitech/scientists-are-still-searching-for-the-source-of-covid-19-why-it-matters/https://theconversation.com/why-its-important-to-study-coronaviruses-in-african-bats-131592

It has put the world’s financial markets into a state of panic bordering on hysteria, put politicians and reserve bankers the world over to centre stage as they frantically try to stop a worldwide recession. Hospitals are rapidly becoming overcrowded, martial law declared in Spain and similar restrictions also in Italy. Many countries have closed their borders entirely, others will insist that new arrivals are quarantined for fourteen days. Ireland is even closing its bars!

Scotland, meanwhile,is concentrating its energies on the one thing that matters. Robbing Celtic of their title.

I wasn’t the least surprised yesterday to see the BBC publishing a Press Association release that one club in Scotland is demanding that the season be declared null and void. I think we can all guess which one that might be! Time was when media outlets competed for the scoops, the big exclusives that sold newspapers. Dummy early editions, designed to put the opposition off the scent were not unknown. The spiralling decline in print sales has led to a similar fall-off in quality journalism, and these outlets routinely regurgitate content from elsewhere with a nod to the original source. I can only assume it is a gentleman’s agreement to keep costs down. Hardly surprising when you consider that The Daily Record which once sold 800,000 copies a day, while The Sunday Mail and Sunday Post were approaching seven figures are all seeing sales inexorably head towards sub-100,000.

Every news outlet takes an RSS feed from the Press Association. If you want to put something into the mainstream,it is the go-to enabler. And the last time I recall this particular employee of the PA released a story to the world,it was rapidly picked up and disseminated. That was the story that became Inch High Private Eye,remember? Yet to hear any follow-up from that, strangely enough.

I think Mr PA guy might be better advised to go out and do some work for a change, rather than simply rely on calling a friend. The friend is clearly using him for his own ends, and that after all is his job. It is the job of a journalist to question information received before putting it in the public domain. It’s time he gave it a try.

****

It has also been an interesting weekend too on the site, after a fashion. Mahe and I set this site up,with considerable help from others, with the simple intention of giving Celtic supporters a place to freely discuss their thoughts on events at Celtic, and thereafter whatever they felt like saying at the time. It has been much more successful than any of us envisaged, and we know that is down to the quality of the comments from the site members.

But it is also down to the simple fact that we have always asked everyone to argue their case with civility and respect to others, and to be honest, that has been IMO the major success of the site in our eighteen months.

Sadly, not everyone feels that way,so Mahe and I will now delete any comment which contains personal abuse to other members or to bloggers elsewhere. We will also delete any post which we consider to contain wilful or dangerous misinformation. Other deletions will be made if they are considered to breach the ethos of the site.

There will be no exceptions and no appeals.

Can I be the first to be deleted under the new rules ya pair o eejits? Please? I want to be the first ?

( On a serious note, not surprising . )

Awaiting the Scottish decision with baited breath. There’s only one option imo. Celtic are champions.

Well, always happy to make a friend happy-but who would know that you’d been deleted?

Grand article, BMCUW! ???
A wee bit more clarity from the type of Irishman that I’d like to see on Celtic’s board, rather than the, Fine Fail/Fine Gael prks that are the reason the ROI has been governed by Tories – for a century! FFS!
Here’s the clarity from Sinn Fein’s John O’Dowd https://twitter.com/JohnODowdSF/status/1238834976411586563?s=19
BOOM!!!???

Hail!? Hail!?

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

Hi,KEV

Mahe’s reply to you earlier about deleting your post was exactly how I explained it to Eddie. I did so in order to find out if it was yourself or someone abusing your moniker,as it wasn’t set out in your usual way.

Apologies all round, but no malice intended. Stay clear of potential health hazards, mate. I think we are all trying to do that!

HH Bobby & Mahe! ???

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

KEVJ

I think their plan is to ensure that people are as safe as is necessary, rather than as safe as is possible. The latter would mean everyone confined to barracks 24/7 for months. Which would almost certainly cause more deaths from other illnesses being untreated, plus starvation-because the supermarkets and elsewhere would be closed,hypothermia-power plants closed,dehydration-water treatment closed, etc.

Plus deaths from an impacted colon as people run out of bog roll!

Aye- I don’t think I thought that through eh? Mind you – had you deleted it and added a comment that you’d deleted my post as it was the worst you’ve ever seen in 50 years of blogging that would had a lot of SC’ers thinking what on earth could he have said? ?

Anyhow – I’ve nothing bad to say today despite the fact I’ve lost a small fortune on my shares. A lot of hard earned cash gone. Painful ain’t the word! Looking at what’s going on across the world leaves me grateful for what I do still have. My health.

Late start today. My car being delivered after 3 month wait. Would never have ordered it had I seen the financial devastation coming , but I did, so fekk it.

The value of your shares is akin to the value of your house. The price is only relevant if you intend to sell soon. As you will well know. They will recover, and more. Although there will be corporate failures in the meantime.

I told my nephew three weeks ago when we were in London that the financial markets had seriously underestimated the effects of this. That only Apple had released a statement regarding problems with both demand AND supply. That combination is always a red flag, but it was ignored at the time. So we ordered up another couple of pints while I explained it to him.

Clever lad that he is-1st class Masters in Chem Eng-he thought about it then…

Fuck,my share ISAs!!!

So I then returned to line one of this post, and his mind turned to the possibility of the housing market taking enough of a hit for him to buy his first place sooner than he thought. Got his head screwed on,that yin.

My twins are facing the threat of redundancy. Both work in the airline industry. ( different companies and pure coincidence that as twins they both ended up in the same field of work)

Worrying times for them both, who are in high level positions in their respective fields. I’m concerned for both. Trump’s move on Friday increased the threat dramatically.

Just need to await the outcome but all the signs are it will be 2-3 months at least before this thing hits a peak so their companies won’t ride it out that long, and they both know it.

Charity run

Hi all
You’ll remember I was on here some months ago looking for sponsors as my daughter was doing a 10k to raise funds for Marie Curie . The response was fantastic and she well exceeded her target.

Due to the current situation, unfortunately the run has been postponed. It will still happen but not on the date it was scheduled. She asked me to pass on this message, for transparency, and assure everyone who kindly donated, she will still be doing it when the new date is released.

Big Audio Dynamite

Bloody hell, mate. Shocker. That whole industry is in bother now, apparently. It’s not so long ago that most airlines were lining up their legal case against Boeing for forcing them to slash routes and flights due to the 737-Max situation. Now they are parking up huge swathes of their fleet.

I read yesterday that the UK industry spokesman reckoned it would take a £7.5bn bail out to help the industry through it,and even Lufthansa will request state aid. Stateside, they reckon an 80% cut on international flights and 30-50% domestically.

Can’t say I’m surprised. Planes are incubators for viruses. It’s not like you can open a window.

Fingers crossed for them both,mate.

Just thinking out loud, mate ?

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

BIGAUDIODYNAMITE

Just amended the end of my previous post. Good thinking!

Any ideas on how to keep a stir-crazy 81yo occupied for four months while he’s under house arrest? I mean,he may have a minor mobility problem at times, but it doesn’t stop him running for the bus to get to the pub!

And suggestions on how to prevent my Mum killing him in the meantime would be welcome too.

Seriously,it may be the best thing for them according to medical advice, but it is a cruel and inhumane punishment.

Big Audio Dynamite

Bobby, can’t help with a stir-crazy 81yo, as I have a pain in the ass 85yo to deal with ☺ she said to me this morning “Hope you’re not worried, son” gotta love her, made of tungsten steel

I’m kinda snookered for helping out this week ( daytime hours I mean) due to work but evenings are ok so if I can be of any help in the West Lothian/ Lanarkshire areas just let me know.
I don’t mind what it it is. Also, I mentioned yesterday that my son took a card out for a cash and carry so if someone is desperately short of anything that I’m able to get, let me know and I could try and get stuff . It’s in Edinburgh but I’d try and get there early morning for opening time and deliver in the evening when I’m finished at work .

Twists, I keep thinking this. What if someone hss self isolated as they think they may have this? Would anyone take the chance of going to them ..a stranger?

MONDAY 16TH
I had a wonderful visit today with my mother, father and Marcella. Wonderful, considering the circumstances and the strain which indeed they are surely under.

As I expected, I received a lot of verbal flak from Screws going and coming from the actual visit. Their warped sense of humour was evident in their childish taunts, etcetera.

I wrapped myself up well to keep me from the cold. My weight is 58.25 kgs today, but I burnt up more energy today with the visit. I’ve no complaints of any nature.

I’ve noticed the orderlies are substituting slices of bread for bits of cake, etcetera — stealing the sweet things (which are rare anyway) for themselves. I don’t know whether it’s a case of ‘How low can you get?’ or ‘Well, could you blame them?’ But they take their choice and fill of the food always, so it’s the former.

They left my supper in tonight when the priest (Fr Murphy) was in. There were two bites out of the small doughy bun. I ask you!

I got the Sunday World newspaper; papers have been scarce for the past few days.

There is a certain Screw here who has taken it upon himself to harass me to the very end and in a very vindictive childish manner. It does not worry me, the harassment, but his attitude aggravates me occasionally. It is one thing to torture, but quite a different thing to exact enjoyment from it, that’s his type.

There was no mirror search going out to visits today — a pleasant change. Apparently, with the ending of the no-wash protest, the mercenary Screws have lost all their mercenary bonuses, etcetera, notwithstanding that they are also losing overtime and so on. So, not to be outdone, they aren’t going to carry out the mirror search any more, and its accompanying brutality, degradation, humiliation, etcetera.

Why! Because they aren’t being paid for it!

I’m continually wrapped up in blankets, but find it hard to keep my feet warm. It doesn’t help my body temperature, drinking pints of cold water. I’m still able to take the salt and five or six pints of water per day without too much discomfort.

The books that are available to me are trash. I’m going to ask for a dictionary tomorrow. I’d just sit and flick through that and learn, much more preferable to reading rubbish.

The English rag newspapers I barely read, perhaps flick through them and hope that no one opens the door. A copy of last week’s AP/RN was smuggled in and was read out last night (ingenuity of POWs again). I enjoyed listening to its contents (faultless – get off them ! – good lad Danny (Morrison)). I truly hope that the people read, take in and understand at least some of the truths that are to be regularly found in it. I see Paddy Devlin is at his usual tricks, and won’t come out and support the prisoners…

Well, that’s it for tonight. I must go. Oíche Mhaith.

My sisters can take care of my parents’ essentials. A phone call and it’s there. It will break their hearts not being able to go in for a blether and a coffee-seriously-but as one of them works in a high-risk environment, they won’t take a chance.

Leave the stuff in the porch or at the doorstep.

I likened it yesterday to the scenes at the leper colony in Ben-Hur,lowering the food down to the people in the colony so as not to be infected themselves.

Cheers CCB will probably come out of this a multilingual PhD.

Things are good. Avoiding the news as much as possible. The main thing is keeping the mental and spiritual health well.

I think that’s as much a priority. The blog gives the opportunity to help others and have a blether, so that’s good.

I think UEFA will make the decision for everyone tomorrow. Blanket and across the board. That way there can be no arguments.

Where I think they will fudge it is the issue of relegation and promotion. These are notoriously more difficult to call, even at this stage of the season,as there are more teams going up and down than there can be champions. We’ve all seen a team going into freefall from a seemingly safe position,or mid-table sides suddenly hitting a purple patch out of nowhere.

From a Scottish perspective,I reckon the best solution is to cancel relegation.

Promote the top two in each division to maintain the status quo of ten per lower division and bring in two teams from the pyramid instead of one. It will mean a fourteen team Premier League for a season, but there are various ways to deal with that, all of which include a split after 26 games.

Next season, three teams go down from the PL. One up from Div 1 with three down, and so on down the lower divisions.

Overkill relegating three teams from a division of ten,but them’ the breaks.
