Losing The Sense Of Community

Today sees a guest article from AULDHEID. An excellent offering,as you might expect, and our apologies for the delay in its publication due you admin difficulties last week.

Football clubs are merely the totems around which different communities gather to sing their songs and dance their dances, but in trying to become big  business this essential point has been lost. Football as a business has grown too big for its boots.

At the end of the chapter “The Worst Business in the World” in their book Soccernomics (2009) Simon Kuperand Stefan Szymanski say

“Soccer clubs need to know what they are. They shouldn’t kid themselves they are Titanium Metals (a small company in Big Business Terms but a behemoth compared to any soccer club –  https://www.timet.com/about/   ) . Rather they are like museums, public spirited organisations that aim to serve the community, whilst remaining reasonably solvent.”

Few would argue that Celtic have managed the latter in laudable terms that has led to long term football success and long may it continue, but in becoming a PLC has that aim of serving the community not so much been lost as reversed?

Celtic started as a community club and, I would argue still are, but that community has spilled out from its origins in the east end of Glasgow to become global. Wherever you go in the world you are likely to bump into a fellow Tim and a friendly connection is often made. We make friends easily, we commune. However is the current PLC model the right fit for the global Celtic community of today? Has the PLC model caused Celtic custodians to have grown apart from its community rather than being a part of it?

The most recent issue caused by the CoVid Virus has been the sale of season tickets for games that at the outset fly in the face of the very reason for buying a season ticket which is  To Be There when the team runs on to the park. Celtic’s approach to the problem caused by CoVid19 is constrained by the very model that has sustained Celtic as a solvent, indeed very profitable business, which is the degree of reliance on actual match day physical attendance that brings the sense of community back to the place where it first began.

However that community whilst metaphorically and emotionally lives in the shadow of Celtic Park physically it does not. In having to offer regular match day attendees  the opportunity to watch from afar ,will that be a cause for many to rethink the current model in a world where we are being reminded nothing is certain , so be ready to change?

In that respect I looked into my crystal ball (a spreadsheet actually) that can be viewed here for an alternative model that recognised not only how widespread the Celtic community has become but also offered a path to a place where the lost sense of community at one with itself could be reborn.

It is one of life’s cosmic ironies that as I was developing the new model last night the same idea of giving the community a greater say via a Membership Scheme had emerged on CQN on Tuesday

https://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/season-tickets-renewed-of-course/comment-page-2/#comment-3480841  by CELTIC1MEMBER1VOT

that BMCUW pasted on Sentinel Celts and if you have not read it everyone should. It makes the very valid point, particularly in light of the lessons Resolution 12 has taught us ,  that the PLC model not only does not reflect the values that the  Celtic community hold dear but prevents any changes to that model happening and is prepared to go to unacceptable lengths to do so.

The great thing about a spreadsheet is the ability to ask“What if?” and each answer offers a potential new realitythat might be attractive enough to try to create call it Back to the Future.

The model at this link contains various assumptions thatare challengeable and the purpose in presenting it is solely to get us thinking about what about Celtic is important to us?

That will obviously vary according to each individual’s experience, but hopefully in sharing those thoughts a consensus might emerge as to the direction the community rather than the PLC wish Celtic to head.

The spreadsheet model has notes to reveal the thinking behind the figures but this bit of text from the model is worth setting out here to provide a bit more context.

Key assumptions

Ditch Sky and form SPFL TV as streaming channel

Celtic matches played either Sat or Sunday fixed KO and not in competition with other SPFL games. The Rangers FC Ltd do same

Other clubs keep income from their supporters viewingbut are guaranteed a bottom figure.

Objective

To make Celtic a recognised well run NOT For Profit GLOBAL COMMUNITY CLUB that truly reflects the ethos of that community

To pave the way to giving all Membership Scheme participants a single vote on Celtic business policy based on Celtic’s greatest resource – its supporters and their values as a community.

Apologies again to Auldheid,as there are some accompanying tables which won’t scan into the article. I’ll try to post them separately.

Morning Bobby
Extremely interesting stuff from Auldheid.

I’ll look at the spreadsheet on my laptop at my break, trying to do it on the phone is a nightmare.

Great read. Thanks to Auldheid and 1member1vot.

Got an hour of nag study time left than I need to get to work.

ATOB. I wanted to respond to your vg post last night but will need to do so a little later. Was late before my visitors went away last night so I didn’t have time.

(I’m a little confused at your Single Ticket Purchasers,10000@£20=£1,020,000. I assume you’ve added in a number of actual ticket purchases to that)
Main assumption here would have to be that Celtic and Rangers both play their home games at no later than 1230 on Saturday. Otherwise all other teams would have to move their kick-off times. I think that is achievable for the Irish crowd who fly,not so sure about those who come by ferry. Also quite difficult for the English-based ones, though having checked,it can be done. Trains from London and Birmingham arrive from around 11am.

Away games same time on Sunday. Same problems as before,so not insurmountable.

This frees up a 3pm Sunday time for another game,which-especially if we include a Friday evening, possibly lower-league,fixture-should be enough to prevent it being known as OFTV. So in other words,I’m all in favour of splitting from the traditional broadcasters and going it alone. There are 12m Sky subscribers and probably 2m on the likes of Virgin, etc. That means around 1.2m of those are in Scotland.

If half of them take the “Scotsports channel” at a tenner a month, that’s £72m a year. Costs should be easily covered by advertising,so write that off. I’d say it’s a winner, but it will take a brave man to try-and a helluva lot of market research! But with the archive available, there is no reason why it can’t be run as a fully functioning channel, seven days a week.

The difference between voting ST membership and ordinary ST membership is only £300. That would have to increase.

There are approximately 95m shares in place at the moment, each valued at around 115p. I’d like to suggest that every £2 spent on your season ticket entitles you to a proxy vote at the AGM for that season. Or the next, perhaps,as so many use a payment plan for their purchase. I’m not sure how legal that would be,but I know there will be a way round it if the will is there.

Our ST income is in the region of £40m. That means that 20% of available votes will be available for season ticket holders to show any disquiet at decisions made by the board-even if it is not enough to force them to change course.

It is about being in a position to be heard,to hold the board to account. The way that a community club does.

The way that our club doesn’t.

Thanks for your efforts on this,P. Some really hard thought went into it,and I hope you can tell I did I bit of head-scratching myself on the subject!

Poor dear Matt. He thought this whole crisis would be his chance to shine. And he has-the panic sweat every time he opens his mouth to repeat what he has been told by Cummings to learn by rote overnight has been visible from space.

Note they are still refusing to call an enquiry on the government handling of the pandemic, and also on the destruction of pandemic planning which Gordon Brown drastically increased.

It’s no comfort to say I didn’t vote for them,or that those who did might be regretting it now. We all are!

Thanks for planting the seeds of an alternative path.

One Member One Vote gives much food for thought too.

My feeling is that the ballpark figure of £750m, or whatever the number is neither here nor there for many given the perceived payback for many.

For them that figure has bought the humiliation and liquidation of Rangers. It’s undermined the credibility of the administration of the game, it’s made Scottish football a laughing stock.

The cost of the Season Ticket and the purchase of shares for many is a justified outlay considering what it’s delivered.

How far that expenditure will be rationalised is being tested at the moment and it’ll be interesting to see if it leads to more questions being asked.

Celtic were founded to make money. That was a fact very quickly identified by profiteers. The business model is very successful, it’s assisted by the ongoing lack of equality in Scotland.

It’s unfortunate that Walfrid’s laudable creation has in some ways led to the entrenchment of anti-Irish racism in Scotland. It provided a safe haven for our people but in many ways allowed us to be stereotyped and unfortunately helped the unscrupulous among our own to exploit us.

This has slowed down integration into a unwelcoming and admittedly challenged society. This was a danger the founders were wary of by the very choice of the club’s name.

Many Scottish based Celtic supporters often have an idealised picture of Ireland and missed out on the horrors of the Civil War and the early development of the Republic.

The failure of the church to deliver in it’s role of spiritual growth, an increasingly arid and stressful world, inequality and lack of acceptance into Scottish society has created a void.

Celtic fill that void by providing something that folk can put their heart into.

Viktor Frankl would have said it’s part of ‘Man’s Search For Meaning.’

We’re a resourceful people and intelligent people. It’s a shame that a connection hasn’t been made with forward thinking supporters of other clubs (particularly Rangers/Sevco). There must be similar questions being asked elsewhere…?

Hopefully you’ve sown a Mustard Seed.

Thanks to ASWGL for the efforts with the IT side of things last week.

Auldheid, truly thought provoking article. One of the consequences of a corporate culture is a subliminal arrogance and insularity. It is a rare CEO indeed who genuinely consults with the “little people” rather than engage in a PR charade. The truth is, and always has been, that there are smarter and more innovative people sitting in the stands than in the Celtic boardroom. Why on earth not tap into that vast creative resource?

June 17, 2020 10:23 am

Tap into that vast wealth of intelligence among the conquered heathen?

Sorry, old boy. You clearly don’t get this empire building thing. Divide and conquer, that’s how it’s done.

June 17, 2020 10:25 am

Good morning!

AULDHEID … I like that model ??… clear and transparent allowing each type of fan ( ST , UK viewer, overseas etc) to gain access to the games plus the chance to have a significant voice on club matters… I would fall under UK viewer and I would not hesitate paying up to £12 per month IF that allowed at least 7 or 8 live televised games that would not be available on Sky during course of the season or alternatively enable you to attend two home fixtures with guaranteed match ticket (probably exclude games v Huns) … otherwise I wouldn’t want to pay for just live audio… I can easily view highlights online in any case… The most important thing is the removal of Sky… no respect for a broadcaster which continue with second rate commentators and poor showing of the SPFL … the anti Celtic bias is unacceptable and not far on a par with main Scottish media in Scotland

GARRY …. congratulations on Bayern becoming champions ??… here’s me hoping Dortmund secure 2nd place and secure Sancho and Haaland for one more crack at the title!

RIP WILLIE THORNE … A real character in those days when you watched him with Steve Davis, Jimmy White, Alex Higgins, Cliff Thorburn and so many of the greats of the 80s snooker world

Marcus Rashford… RESPECT … it would have been an absolute disgrace if this Govt had not caved in to allow many children go hungry this summer… I feel ashamed we can’t do more for those kids who live under poverty in this day and age…. even though I’m furloughed, my wife and I regularly donate dry food and toiletries to food banks…. it’s makes your blood boil when those in power and those who are extremely well off let the inadequate welfare state just deal with it!

Right I’m off to back to decorating the house … only good thing about furlough… I can now use the time to at least make the house a more comfy home with a fresh lick of paint!

June 17, 2020 10:32 am

Basterts quibbled about a lousy £100m and then said oh,sorry knew nothing about it.

Default one is a soundbite, step two is a lie, step three is to blame someone else. If Johnson genuinely hadn’t heard of Marcus Rashford’s open letter, what the hell is he doing in No 10? He certainly isn’t reading his briefings-or even reading the newspapers or watching the news on tv.

Incompetent,Peter Principle, say what you like, the guy is thoroughly unfit for office of any sort.

(Hancock just said ‘Daniel ‘ Rashford, the level of incompetence is off the scale, the lying, cover ups etc….I used to think The Thick of It was satire.)
Politicians are out of touch with the people they represent due to having self interest at the core of their being.
They would make perfect board members of our present day Celtic plc.
Was at a #justiceforgeorgefloyd rally and our congressman shows up in black jeans and t-shirt looking decidedly uncomfortable.
He then waffled on with boring platitudes for about 30 minutes on change thats needed and the reality is he will probably block at the whims of his corporate masters.
He then got around to the subject matter and said he would demand justice for George Taylor.
Crowd shouted out George Floyd-Breonna Taylor was a black woman killed by police in a raid on her house with dubious warrant.
People gave up on him and just started chanting George Floyd and Black Lives Matter.
He apologized prattled on for another minute and scurried off back to his corrupt and cosy life as a corporate Democrat.
My wife and i had dealings with him a few years ago in a battle over special education.
We where involved in a dispute with our town over placement of our autistic son.
During the conflict a whilestleblower in the Dept of Education sent us a document that showed clear racial bias in placement by the town.
We wrote to this congressman’s office and got the reply of yes questions need to be asked of these figures.
We won our case about 6 months later.
About a year later we got a letter from said congressman asking if we ever got a resolution on the case?
I wrote back and told him that no thanks to his total lack of effort and told him exactly what i thought of him in a distinctive Scottish way.
Got no reply.

Garry, I was a wee bit tempted to sign up for the free bet with Paddy Power but after reading about willie Thorne’s death I learned he went bankrupt a couple of years ago because of gambling problems. So I decided not to. it was like a sign 🙂

Pertinent article though cannot see our board profiteers entertaining the thought of their money printing exercise being affected.
Football is mirroring society with the corporate hijack of recent decades.
We all know that it is unsustainable but those benefitting will not change willingly.

UEFA have confirmed that qualifying rounds 1 to 3 in the CL next season will be played as one off ties. They playoff will be over 2 legs as normal.

Update: Luck of the draw will determine whether we’re home or away.
UCL group stage starts on October 20, 21.

With respect to the Bojo government, if you vote for a no alternative party, you get get no alternatives. It is very simple.

Sadly, it is not just a UK problem.

Watch for the pandemic being used as an excuse for the economic disaster that is waiting round the corner due to withdrawal from the EU without a backup plan.

– Draw dates
– Will away goals count in one-off games?

– Will there be any regionalisation of draws?

Countries have until 3rd August to nominate teams for Europe, so the draw for QR1 won’t be before that.

a wee story, I had no interest in horse racing as a kid in glenboig,, but remember my late aunt Isabell asking me to run round to paddy burns betting shop to put her line on, it was usually Scobie breasley or lester pigot she would curse after her line went down? I digress, my wife told me that every year they went on holiday to tenby in south wales as kids, joan and her sister had to wait before they went to the beach, so that her late father frank put his bet on ,he was horsey mad, worked for Liverpool corporation as a gardener, and every day going to work he would stop off at the newsagents in quarry bank road in Woolton, to buy his daily express to pick his horses out, does quarry bank road not ring a bell, god bless john Lennon?
