Bolingoli-Why

Morning,all.

No doubt what today’s article was going to focus on once I got out of my scratcher. Bolingoli’s crass and selfish behaviour hasn’t just jeopardised his career-I think he is such damaged goods now that if Celtic sack him,he’ll be lucky to get a job delivering pizza for Deliveroo, much less waltz in to a new club somewhere-he has jeopardised our quest for Ten In A Row,jeopardised the remainder of the season, and as a result jeopardised the entire future of a great many clubs throughout the country.

Make no mistake about it,if this season is cancelled a lot of clubs quite simply won’t survive. The rest will be on their uppers for years to come, and the national game will be unrecognisable from where it was only a couple of years earlier.

But is it fair that he should carry the can for all of this when not only is he not the only one in the game to have ignored the rules? Why is he being singled out in the media and in the Scottish Parliament when the rules are being flouted en masse on a daily basis all over the country? We’ve all seen the photographs of lemmings crowding onto the beaches at the first sign of that big yellow disc in the sky, punters shoulder to shoulder in crowded pubs up and down the country. People might look at these and shake their heads at the idiocy of such behaviour, the Scottish Government might even publicly state their disapproval, but the biggest outcry has been saved for one man. Hardly seems fair, does it?

Well, aye it does. Not everyone is in the privileged position of being able to jump on a plane at the drop of a hat and bugger off to Spain for a lousy couple of nights. That’s Spain, practically the most high-profile country on the UK’s highly-publicised list of countries high demands that anyone flying into the country from there self-isolate on their return. I’m not sure whether this was rank stupidity, selfishness or if he just CGAF. And it doesn’t matter either,as the damage is done.

The Scottish Government have been quite grown up in their response,to be fair. They have warned Scottish football that one more breach will mean that the game’s a bogey and that the game will be halted, but they have also said that any past indiscretions which come to light via social media will not be included. The players need to realise that they will be putting at risk not only their own health, not only their own future, but that of potentially a large number of their fellow professionals, their employers, and the game as a whole.

Yes,it is THAT serious!

However, this brings me back to another question-or two. Should the club have been more stringent in its application of the post-lockdown directives? Were they made sufficiently clear to the players? Should there have been a daily check-in by every player via a zoom call or a simple,time-stamped,photo of them at home? Should we,in fact, not be holding player passports in the company safe for safe-keeping,as I believe used to happen throughout the game in the past,a move designed to prevent the players from turning up at the airport for a European tie without their passports? Seems a bit draconian now,but no-one had any problem with it in the past.

I don’t pretend to have the answers here, but then I don’t have to. I’m not the one who gets paid the big bucks to think these things through, either in advance to prevent such problems arising in the first place,or when dealing with the fallout afterwards. I do know though that measures have to be put in place to prevent a repeat.

***

And this brings me to another question. Not what Bolingoli was doing in Spain last week, but what he was doing being awarded a fat juicy contract at Celtic FC in the first place. This is a player who I can honestly say that I have NEVER ONCE seen have a decent display for us. In fact,I’ll go further. I’ve never once seen him do anything during a game which makes me think-nice one, son. His performances so far have been one long rinse and repeat of him running up the left flank and then either losing the ball by running into an opponent or passing it and standing there watching hide the move peters out. Either way,he is consistently caught out of position when the opposition break, stranded up the field and unable to help his fellow defenders out. I thought Olivier Tebily was bad,but at least he could tackle and clear a corner-it was his concentration which was a problem, give him time on the ball to think and he would invariably make the wrong decision.

Mark Viduka made us a profit and scored some goals for us,but I wish he had never been near the club, and don’t get me started on Rafael Scheidt. And I can probably go back to Jim Plumrose in 1983,for instance,as another who could come into the picture for that accolade, our worst-ever signing. Our readers will no doubt be able to rhyme off a lot more contenders, but for me Bolingoli has exceeded all our expectations in this one.

Our worst-ever signing, made all the worse by being the replacement for our best left back in half a century. It makes me weep, and I hope that whichever processes were followed which allowed his signing have been drastically tightened up so that there is no repeat of this fiasco. The question isn’t whether he should be sacked,it’s what he was doing wearing The Hoops in the first place.

OK sod the the lot of you?, im telling the story, its 1965 my parents just bought ne a raleigh bike it was yellow think it was called a BSA not sure, i was over the moon, anyway the school got involved with this cycle proficiency test, we went to the kelvin hall one saturday, the hall was lined up like a real road ,traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, but obviously you were not allowed your own bike, i remember going towards this pedestrian crossing a policeman ventured out onto it, you are supposed to stop i didnt and knocked him on his backside, when we got the results about a week later i was inconsolable i had failed the test, but remember it was not my bike i was riding so i have got an excuse? have not touched a bike since, but hey there is still time,? another true story, BTW is the kelvin hall still there?

I was a newly born baby living a couple of hundred yards away from the Kelvin Hall in Partick in 1965, if it was after June ’65.
The Kelvin Hall is still going strong ?

I cannot, in all seriousness, rate Boli Bolingoli as our worst ever signing in football terms.

He is a hated figure just now and deserves most of it for what he did rather than his football ability. He played for Rapid Vienna and their coach wanted to keep him, so our scouts were not alone in seeing a fast attacking wing back in the mid-price range for Celtic.

He has turned out to be a disaster, but not for his football. He did not produce the draw at Killie but he never did anything very much either.

What Boli did is unforgivable but rating his ability on the pitch does not need any revision. He was no better and no worse than Braafheid or EL Kaddouri , one of the Cameras or JJPD but none of them poisoned us as much as he did off the pitch.

Incidentally, MIT, the Lukaku link was well known at the time and publicised.

I see Wiggy Smith is on advocating dropped points for Coronavirus gambling clubs like Aberdeen and Celtic, surprise, surprise. But like the SNP’s vaunted scheme for Strict Liability, there’s a built-in perverse incentive to their “thinking”. All Sevco have to do is bribe another figure heading for the fringes of our squad to break protocols and you’ve earned a cheap 3 point loss. We could do the same with disgruntled members of their squad.

I have no problem with Boli getting hammered or Freddo and Jones at Ibrox for their bar-hopping in July, or the Baleful Eight at Pittodrie. But none of their clubs is responsible for their stupidity.

big packy

CHEERS, for that garry ?

Mahe

SFTB,
Surely he is around the podium for Worst Ever Player?
Signed for a reasonably high fee (2.75-3) yet wasn’t wanted by the next transfer window.
In say 15 games or so he looks nowhere near the requisite quality.
And now costs the club fixtures which will heap huge pressure on, plus the transfer fee will surely be minimal if any at all.
Scheidt will always be our worst ever purchase,
but for me Bangura and Boli make up the podium.
Hope you’re well.
Hail Hail

Mahe.
Here’s 2 recent ones.
Comments from Celtic Wiki.
Compper and Jack Hendry arrived with a combined fee around the £4m mark and Celtic haven’t seen any return from this investment. Compper was an enigma during his time at Celtic, he was untried by Brendan Rodgers when he could have called upon the German but for whatever reason, he was left out of the first team. He will remain a flop in terms of the Celtic recruitment that was mixed under Rodgers reign.

Brian Whittaker is the worst left back I have ever seen in a Celtic shirt. Awful player.

JimmynotPaul

This guy beats Boil.
Again comments from Celtic Wiki.
The signing of Rafael Sheidt for almost 5 million pounds, reputedly on the basis of a video cobbled together by his agent, was one of the worst signings in Celtic’s history. Arguably the worst [in financial terms]. It was certainly a key factor in manager John Barnes getting sacked (amongst a whole litany of other errors). The Guardian newspaper rated him the second worst transfer in the history of football in an article published in 2001.

Not only was he a poor player – slow, unskillful, and lazy – but he seemed cursed from the moment he arrived in Glasgow. He was clearly unfit, and was taken to hospital with appendicitis on the eve of his debut. He caused himself a serious injury after colliding with a teammate in training. And then he got mixed up with a scandal about the Brazilian national coach taking bribes to let unknown players get a couple of matches for the Brazilian team, in order to boost their value. As one teammate said, “the guy couldnae trap a bag of cement”

I actually thought JPPD wasn’t that bad.
I don’t think he deserves on the list of shame.
At least won us a cup, crappy goal but they all count.

Bury are reforming and placing a THE in front of their name to show they aren’t the originals.
Remember that happened up north for a very small period?
Whatever happened to the THE?

Tony Can’t scorino wasn’t one of our better signings.

Roy Keane can go on the list as well.

BADABING

Remember when Not The View first came out? They had an article at the end of the mag,They Embarrassed The Hoops.

It was hilarious,to be honest, and we all knew where the author as coming from. Except…

One victim, his family pointed out that he was a helluva lot better than any of the writers were. He lived the dream, and that was good enough for him,and for them.

NTV discontinued that series, and probably rightly so. But the candidates nowadays don’t come from the back streets, earning £300 a week. I’ll always cut some slack for a guy living the dream-we all do!-but not a four year contract for £3m which matches his transfer fee.

That’s £6m down the drain, mucker. Somebody needs shooting for that.

jimthetim53

Well that’s a coincidence, me too!

We swapped Cascarino for Tommy Boyd. In which case,Cascarino was actually a great signing for us!

Twists,
” Roy Keane can go on the list as well.”
Totally disagree actually. Walked in for free, walked out for free, very short term contract so we couldn’t get lumped with a dud ala Compper, helped cement league with one of our best Ibrox performances and raised our profile all over.
Couldnt ask for more?

JIM actualy im 67 at the moment, but two people i think the world of have birthdays on the 3rd of october ,can you guess who?

BMCUW.
It was Danny (Puffer ) Crainie’s family and, yes, he should never have been included.
He scored the opener against oldco, in a game we won 2.0, I think, maybe 2.1.

I told Tom Boyd that 10 days ago when I met him. That he was Celtic’s best ever swap deal.
Tom’s self deprecating answer was, ” Cause I’m the only one.” ?

Sorry, but I have to agree with Mahe. I loved having Roy Keane in a Celtic shirt. Same with his namesake Robbie.

Bobby I gotta admit calling players an embarrassment doesnt sit easy with me, for the reasons you point out plus those family reasons mentioned. I will withdraw from using the term but see nothing wrong with a fan stating he doesnt think a player gave us good value for money.
If that makes sense.

Willo Flood was a very limited player. Jamie Smith also imo.

Nah. He never lived up to my expectations by a long long way. I thought he was garbage. I think the Clyde game scunnered me so much there was no way back. Ain’t judging it on value. I expected a lot. Anyway yer not changing my mind. ?

I am still not convinced that Rafael Scheidt was a real footballer.

did you ever see the movie The Shawshank Redemption … the lead character, Andy Dufresne, creates a completely fictional person in order to wash money … I always thought that something like that happened with Rafael Scheidt ….some kids made him up and posted some shit on Youtube, hoping someone would bite, but never actually expecting it….the clue is in the name… Shite …..but, then when Celtic scouted him, there was a mad scramble to find a real person to come to Glasgow to pretend to be a real person/footballer ….

it has happened before …

There was that guy, Ali Dia, who convinced then Southampton manager, Graeme Sounness, that he was a great footballer and the cousin of George Weah…. so Souness signed him to a short term contract .. came on as a sub in one game, but he was so bad, he was then subbed shortly after’

then there was the case of Jon Minda, an Ecuadorian footballer, who created a fake Wikipage, and talked himself into a contract with Mexican club Atletico Morelia. Depending on who was talking for the team, they either thought they were getting another footballer by the same name, or were simply bamboozled by the Wikipedia page listing this guys great footballing pedigree (which Wikipage the club later learned the guy had created himself a couple of days prior)

🙂

Someone just sent me this. Sorry for Rangers post, but it does affect Celtic season tickets, if we are doing similar.
Rangers v St Johnstone, live from Ibrox TONIGHT! Watch it exclusively on pay per view through RANGERS TV. Only £9.99 for your match pass. #ReadyAtHome p Celtic season ticket holders.
If it’s only £9.99 what’s the point of purchasing VST, for approx£ 650.

Some of the players we had when Macari and Brady were managers at Celtic were shockers, who can forget the unfortunate named Wayne Biggins, come on to feck, those were dire times.

Glad to hear that Tom Boyd was every bit the gentleman I always imagined him to be. Seemed like a really good p9or and a decent guy.

And I, too, am glad both Keane’s had the chance to play for Celtic… but particularly Roy. One of my footballing heroes..would have liked him for Celtic manager … not that I think he was the greatest manager, but dont think PL would have got away with all his shit if Roy was in charge!
