“Its something I always dreamed of”

Well we have strengthened the rear guard at last but at first glance he seems a bit of a glory hunter, only here for the Champions League and those famous packed European nights.
Aye right!
We’ve only went and nabbed a proper defender, who is jumping aboard at this time not for money, or the raucous crowd, but because he knows exactly how much it means to pull on the Hoops.
Hallelujah, exactly what we could do with, and gives our title defense a real shot in the arm.

Exactly what we could do with a week ago also, and it’s hard not to see the signing as reactionary,, the club stalling for Lord knows what may have cost 30 million but we don’t seem to heed the lessons we are routinely given late August/September. Still, it’s nice to see that did not impact the move, and no doubt taking a pay cut, Big Shane is already showing good characteristics. Happy Days.
It’s also nice to see the club still has the ability to take players from the EPL,good to be reminded it’s not always a one way street.

Big Jules had it easy beside Kris, if he didnt know that he is about to find out. The young viking isn’t a leader, hasn’t the experience to call upon or maybe even the gravitas to order others around week in week out, pointing out substandards if need be.
The Derry man thankfully does offer the above, and to be honest that could be the making of our French giant. They will form a formidable unit now, reminiscent of an O’Neill defence, and I also expect our goal count from the rear to increase.

Business wise the sums seem fine for a player of that age and calibre, not out with the clubs spending at all, and we can assume the wage structure. An agreed price, deal just ready to be signed and sealed in twelve months is very nice, the big man will hopefully be heading into a European Championship with a freshly sealed contract. Playing in that tournament would give him little break, not ideal when the early qualifiers can prove treacherous as we just found out, but next seasons qualifiers are the last thing on anyone’s mind right now.

From a dressing room point of view the more people in there who realise exactly how much this particular title means to the support the better as far as I’m concerned, when you are proud to be there you tend to give a bit extra, or too much as KT showed, but when I asked for the men for the ten, it was exactly players of Shanes standard I hoped for, Ajeti also.
In fairness the players recruited this window have been of a good age and ready to slot straight into the first team, something we rarely seem to do, so perhaps having this batch go right would influence future decision making.

Unfortunately, this will probably see Kris dropped, and I get the feeling the young Norwegian will not take kindly to that decision. Playing him, Shane and Jules could be a plan, but that would leave us without a natural defender on the bench we would surely come back to bite us, so I see it as unlikely, plus he was getting benched for Nir already so rationale says he has just been pushed further down the pecking order. Ten or not, I’m not sure he is as committed to the cause as we wish, and may have been one of those called out publicly by the gaffer last week.
What Kris does next will be interesting.

Also interesting is tonight we are afforded the chance to see our new bhoy live against what should be decent opposition, as the Republic square off against Bulgaria. Of course Shane going down would have hearts in mouths, but a nice headed corner would have drool in mouths, so if your mouth is free tonight you might want to rate him yourself.
Our new rock might be more important to this ten than any of us know.

All the way from Free Derry, Welcome to Celtic Shane.

Hopefully Duffy’s no fucking about approach rubs off on both Jullien and Ajer, they need some of that. Really excited the big lads here, but as someone who likes midfielders, I’m as equally excited about Turnbull, methinks once he settles in he’s going to run a savvy in our team.

September 3, 2020 9:33 am

Glad to see Shane Duffy in the door, at long last. Should have been done weeks ago, but he’s here now. Will have a watch of Ireland tonight, seeking a confirmation of the good vibes.

No problems with the blog here on DuckDuckGo browser, works just fine same as for McCaff.

This has been an excellent transfer window for us so far. Five first team ready players signed already and none of our big hitters sold. Delighted with our business. The team has been much improved. Very excited about the signings of Turnbull and Duffy.
Have we seen a change in signing policy?
Long may it continue. No more projects please.

A ready-made LB and, maybe, cover at CB …unless Welsh is ready? Just realised that Robbie Deas has left 😕

Garry, couldn’t agree more …brilliant window so far!

September 3, 2020 10:49 am

I agree with everyone who says that Sean Duffy is an excellent addition, but more importantly that he should have been signed weeks ago when he first came up in discussions. Sure,we need a left sided centre back, but more to the point we need a rabble rousing no-nonsense centre back who will DEMAND the very best from those around him.

Or may God have mercy on their souls…

Bliddy had it up to here that our deficiencies are only ever addressed after we get knocked out of Europe. I mean, there’s a bliddy obvious common denominator there and it happens every year. The fans know it,the players know it,the managers have all known it. Yet the man who matters does it to us every time.

And for this we are meant to be grateful,eh. Well, thank you Peter.

Based on his displays so far this season,I have serious concerns about the wisdom of Broonie being a first choice every week. The old warrior may be going to the well too often, and it may be time to pace his games out.

I’ve seen it suggested that he could drop back to central defence, which at 5’9″ is a non-starter. He is still a vital part of the squad of course, but his performances so far suggest that he may no longer be a valuable cog in the team.

September 3, 2020 11:07 am

I wouldn’t write off captain Brown just yet. Having turned 35 in June, his legs may be taking a while to get back up to speed after the extended break. Use him sparingly and he will be an important player in our team. I think the signing of Shane Duffy will be very beneficial to Broony. We have at last a leader and verbal communicator in our defence. Something that has been absent for years.

September 3, 2020 11:11 am

I hope the Barry Douglas rumours are true.
Think he would be an excellent left wing back. Not the fastest, but a great defender, great crosser of the ball, and brilliant at corners and can belt in a good few goals from free kicks.

September 3, 2020 11:20 am

Using him sparingly is exactly what I’m suggesting. I’m not writing him off, that would be stupidity, but I genuinely don’t think he is up to the full ninety every time. We will get more from him by using him less,IMO.

September 3, 2020 11:26 am

I think we only need one central defensive midfielder, now we have Shane Duffy in central defence.
I think Nir Bitton could excel in that role. Calmac and Turnbull could do their stuff in offensive roles and would score a barrowload between them. Calmac is wasted as a defensive midfielder.

I firmly believe Broony will be one of those Celts that, when he chucks it, will be almost impossible to replace. Not playing great yet, but his influence is immeasurable. Have no doubts about Broony this year.

Garry, hate to say it but, I’m just not seeing it with GT …one of the most timid- negative players I can remember playing for us. He drives me & my wee boy to distraction. I only vaguely remember Douglas with United …have you seen him lately?

Yes, but easy enough to login.

Greg Taylor is never Celtic class. Biggest weak link in our team. I watch Leeds United a lot. Barry Douglas is 30 now, but a big favourite of mine. He was excellent in Poland and at Wolves too. Have always rated him since his Dundee United days. Great player imo.

Balance and defensive leadership is something our team has been lacking..
Hopefully Duffy will take on the defensive leadership role and Welsh will be given games to develop under Shanes mentoring .A few minutes every 10 to 20 games is not development.
Balance is what we need in the centre of the park. While Brown and McGregor both are talented footballers neither is suited to the role they’re given.Brown lacks the patience and positional awareness to be a defensive mid.McGregor is best suited to a pass and move position but in the deeper role assigned he has resorted to being a square pass safety first static player. His breakout and pass to JF for the first goal was a reminder of what we used to see and highlighted his capability.
We need to stop nostalgia clouding our judgement on this pairing.
Turnbull seems like a good addition but honestly haven’t really seen.Soro in pre season looked positionally sound but a little cautious. He needs to be shown the coaches believe in him.Ntcham is our best midfielder by a mile but playing him to high up the field in crowded areas negates his ability to control flow of play and his excellent vision and passing.
Christie is better in a more central area where his shooting and attacking the box forces opponents to move a lot and work more than they want to.
Mo is also in the same category as Christie..
Forward’s wise Ajeti looks like a penalty box striker and has shown great awareness of space and teammates so far.
Klimala makes great runs to force change on opponents defensive shape but his first touch needs much improvement to be in balance with his pace.
Edouard i think will be sold. His agent if any good will be finding him an exit as the brutality he faces in Scottish football is career threatening.
Historically our plc aim to come out of each transfer window in profit and i don’t think this will be any different.
Ajer,Rogic and Edouard will realize a large profit for them.
Would be disappointed but not surprised if Ntcham is also sold.

September 3, 2020 1:23 pm

Much to my chagrin i have failed abysmally at a wee Celtic knowledge quiz. Name 10 players who have played for Eire and Celtic this century . I only managed 6. Back of the class for me. –

Spoiler – i actually had no idea Johnny Hayes was capped at full international level by Eire.

I think you may be right – If a can’t refuse offer comes in for Eddy , +£35 mill, he’ll be offski. One thing in our favour is that only a few teams in the EPL would have that kind of money to spend at present. Not overly fussed if Ajer leaves apart from having to look for another CB. Will be sad to see Tommy Rogic leave but if he isn’t going to get a game might as well try and get a bit of cash in. Ollie i’d prefer if he stayed but again given Lenny’s preference for playing Scott and Calum, despite the failings of playing that combo, like Rogic it’s probably best if he moves on.

September 3, 2020 1:39 pm

Garry, Barry Douglas?

Do we need a 30 year old hun from Pollok?

September 3, 2020 1:49 pm

I’m not sure these all played at full international, but…

Colin Healy,Aiden McGeady,Roy and Robbie Keane,Liam Miller,Jonny Hayes,Cilian Sheridan,Daryl Murphy,Stokesie.

Oh,Darren O’Dea.

September 3, 2020 1:51 pm

I have a feeling that this transfer window will be one of two halves. We are entering tge second half when players will be sold. Candidates for sale Edouard, Ntcham, Christie, Mcgregor and Ajer. Fringe players and mistakes will also be up for sale. These include Rogic, Bolingoli and some youngsters including Johnston.

Whilst I do not wish any of these to go apart from Boli and Rogic, the biggest loss would be Christie. We have cover for Edouard, although nobody in his class. Ajer should be played in midfield and top clubs will see his potential in that position. He is being wasted at Celtic. Turnbull replaces Ntcham and there is a replacement for McGregor out of Soro, Connell, Robertson and McInroy, or through an acquisition like Ferguson/Campbell. I expect the sales to begin next week.

How will the new Celtic perform? That is the million dollar question. Perhaps, it will click too late for the Europa.

September 3, 2020 1:52 pm

Some of our best players have been childhood Rangers supporters.
What’s your point?

September 3, 2020 2:04 pm

1. He’s a self confessed hun.
2. He’s 30.
3. Never heard of him till lately.

I know you’ve a soft spot for Leeds but, really?

September 3, 2020 2:06 pm

This transfer window is the same as the past few years to late for CL.
If it wasn’t the tiar year i don’t think we would have brought Shane Duffy.
Having said that we should have had enough in our locker to progress to the next round, bad coaching/tactics.

September 3, 2020 2:10 pm

I will be delighted if we sign Barry Douglas.
You will be too when you see him in the Hoops.
I have followed his career since he was a teenager at Tannadice.
A great player, who is far better than self confessed hun Greg Taylor fae Greenock.

September 3, 2020 2:16 pm

There’s more hope in saving/converting a 22 year old self confessed hun than a 30 year old one (too late)😁

Plus, paying for Shane Duffy at 28 is not usual so, can’t see us paying for a 30 year old.

September 3, 2020 2:47 pm

Does our haphazard and reactionary approach to signings leave additional pressure on player?
Since neither Boli or Taylor seem to fulfill their remit where the signings made with the wrong criteria?
Stevie Clarke had Taylor being called up for Scotland whilst a Killie player.
What was his role there?
At Celtic the main criticism is about his attacking prowess as he frequently fails at crossing.
I think some of that criticism is a little harsh as the time we take to get the ball to forward positions already has our players crowded out or closed down.
It is difficult to asses his tackling ability as he does not have a lot to do in that regard though he does seem to get caught wrong side at times but this could be due to him being pushed higher up the field in our system.
I did state recently that he and Frimpong should be used at edge of area on defending corners as with their height they cannot defend high balls in box but their speed should see them close down breaking balls.
Taylor did neither on Frencevaros first goal.
Boli i know nothing about other than he looks positionally unaware of a left back’s defensive duties.
He is a habitual ball watcher which often leaves opponents in attacking space where he should be.
Since both seem to have been signed for attacking reasons who decided on this begs the question.

This may or may not be true.
I am in Vermont near the Canadian border just now.
I am taking my we dog on long walks on mountain bike trails.
Everyday when i return Joan’s advice echoes in my empty head and i brush about 30/40 of those wee sticky wullie things from her coat.
I am being cautious about myself and resisting the urge to hire a bike for the trails as a few years ago in Colorado i missed the turn and flew about 30 ft down the mountain.
A few broken bones and about 2 months off work put paid to my XGames ambitions.
