Gareth Bale – The Enigma
I think it would be about 2006 that I first laid eyes on Gareth Bale. Sitting there in a pub in Swindon wi my mate Jimmy, commenting that the young fella looked like a player.
In fact,Jimmy,if he was in trap six,I’d put a tenner on him!
Back then,he was being played at left back. What a waste. Never a left back in a million years. Southampton at the time had a reputation for developing youth players and selling them on at a rather impressive profit,£6m for Walcott as an example. They still do. £30m for Luke Shaw shows they knew how to wear a mask long before Covid restrictions came in.
Bale was a terrific player in his prime. I remember him destroying Scotland single handed around 2013 or 14. You couldn’t lay a glove on him. Left back,my arse, this was one of the most exciting attacking talents you can imagine.
He was a pleasure to watch, even when he was ripping your own team to shreds. In fact, most defenders could actually only do that, watch,as he ripped their team. Was he Ronaldo or Messi? No. Of course not. And anyone who suggests that a wee bit more application, etc,is missing the point. Bale was immense. But when you saw him at his best, that was peak Bale.
Now,we see a man who should be a legend at possibly the most iconic club in the world being shuttled out of the door because his boss doesn’t like him,and frankly neither of them care. Win four European Cups-two of them almost single handedly-and get yerself tae?
Aye,and take €15m a year with you when you go,that’s how much we don’t want you here any more. Surely if there is a football manager, one who played The Beautiful Game in the most beautiful style, someone who can look at a player and go-aw,wow-it would be Zidane. If any player,a ball player,a lad who simply wants to make people go wow, wanted a manager,it should be Zidane-a man who made us jump for joy just by lacing his boots.
And who, btw, thanked Lubo Moravcik during his acceptance speech for his first major award. As he put it,I am only here tonight because Lubo made me the player that I am.
So now,Bale heads back to Tottenham. Real Madrid are still coughing up a fortune. And he’s playing for a manager who will probably turn him back into the left back that he was the first time I saw him! Aye,all the talent in the world doesn’t matter, not if your boss is winning either a title or a European Cup every year.
And particularly not if you cannot be bothered to learn the language, build up a wee rapport with the press. Sorry,Gareth. Love ya to bits. But,trap six? Naw. You slept in the box there.
See the title there’s a clue! This is it.
It took a genius to figure out Enigma at Bletchley Park,it took another one with a grudge to wreck one in Madrid.
