Covid catches Celtic cold.

First and foremost, take care Odsonne.

The regular article addressing continued non attendance was swiftly knocked into second place late last night by the startling and extremely worrying news that Odsonne Eduoard has tested positive for the corona virus while away with the French under 21s.

That scant information opened the evening swiftly followed by the club announcing no one else had tested positive, but what little we do know leaves the support with more questions than answers.

It’s clear the teams tests came back clear, but what’s not clear is when they were taken.
Having played on Sunday one must assume pre match so Sunday morning would seem most likely with Saturday after training another option.
The point here is if Odsonne tested positive on Tuesday pm, with usually a three day incubation period before showing positive, then there’s every chance some other members of the footballing department will be found positive.
With rumours Gov wanted to clamp down on bars again to slow virus spread, a mass event at the biggest club may just be enough to push pause on the season for now.
I sincerely hope this is an isolated case and the scheduled match goes ahead, but there must be some uncertainty now.

No doubt news will break throughout the day and I guess we will all have to find out how deep down the rabbithole this one goes. Theres really no point in pages of speculation right now.
I would shrug and accept it if the only ‘punishment’ was some loss of training time plus heading into the big match with Griff and Patrik, Ajeti a hopeful.
Only yesterday I mentioned a drab draw would see us remain in purgatory, well I’m now thinking missing out on the game altogether would still see us remain in limbo regarding our form, while just heaping another few gigatons of pressure on the actual game when it does eventually arrive.
We could actually see that rare occasion of a few games against the rivals in a short period of time, free weeks being scant.

Now over to the clubs, governing bodies, and Gov to see what happens next,, each with their own agenda what could go wrong here.
Should our upcoming opponents smell blood in the water they wont help but demand it goes ahead.
Media will no doubt yell from the rooftops we must play without our star guy or any others.
And the Tims nerves, already on edge naturally, are positively shredded.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we won’t be forgetting this year in a hurry.

If it’s only Edouard who’s tested positive and
misses out and the game against William still goes ahead i’m 100% confident we’ll still turn them over. I see the currants are banging the ‘forfeit the game’ drum, desperation does strange things to people.

October 7, 2020 8:05 am

Morning all…Noel I’m in total agreement, show no fear! We’d have to get on with it if he came back from International duty with an injury.
The real problem will be if others are already infected or come back with infection.

October 7, 2020 8:47 am

Whilst I would be happy to never play the poisonous tribute act ever again. I hope the game goes ahead on 17th October, and we stuff them, and put their hun monkey support back in their box.
Albian Ajeti to do a Moussa Dembelè in his first game against them. Hat trick would be nice.

McCaff, yep, no fear. The other point you make is a concern as I see that Sadio Mane of Liverpool has had a similar outcome as Eddy on his travels. Here’s hoping that none of our internationalists succumb to the virus.

Garry, if Ajeti plays against the Williamites, I think he will score.

This is a very serious problem that we have here. As I mentioned last night,it isn’t just a case of waiting for Eddie to “get over things”,it is much more serious than that. He has a severe viral respiratory illness, and athletes take longer to recover fully from that due to the stress that they place on their respiratory system.

All those short bursts of speed at full 100% power take their toll. And attempting to do so before a complete recovery can cause long term damage.

I think Laudrup went down with flu when the huns were going for their ninth or tenth title, and they already had a few injuries. They tried to get the game-against us!-called off,but the Scottish League refused. Laudrup “played” but was miles off the pace, and IMO,was never the same player again.

We have to write off Eddie until he is fully cleared to play. If it costs us points,we will just have to make them up in the next games. We won’t win the league by destroying our star player.

Bobby, your right about the long term implications on people’s health, i’ve came across some folk who’ve had this and one of them is done, struggles to walk any distance and feels wiped out on a constant basis. I don’t know with Edouard being an athlete he might cope better with it, or he might be floored, who knows. Talking of Covid, I wonder if the guy who puts the word bag in “bawbag” that would be Trump, really had it?

October 7, 2020 12:51 pm

Actually,I don’t doubt that he had it-it’s the treatment he received to make it appear that he had a miraculously quick recovery that bothers me. And it should bother him too.

He appears to have been treated with a steroid which suppresses the body’s natural immune system, and it is the immune system kicking in which shows up in the symptoms of the illness. With that not working,it doesn’t stop the virus from beavering away-it just means that it can do so unimpeded. I think he could be in real bother.

Bhoy, following Celtic takes you from the highs to the lows very quickly!

The incubation period for CV19 is up to 14 days with a median of 5-6 days. Translating that to Edouard’s case, this means it is extremely unlikely that he contracted it traveling to the French camp. It is possible that he contracted it sometime from Friday of last week, but possibly as long ago as the game versus Livingston on September 19. His lacklustre performances suggest he may have been struggling with the virus for several games. However, one would expect the club’s testing protocol to have picked this up well before his positive test on Tuesday. Presumably he was tested before the St Johnstone game and showed negative.
It is possible that both of his tests( before StJ and on Tuesday) are accurate results but it is also possible that one or both are false results. I hope Eddy will be tested again and soon.

Unless the French test is shown to be a false positive, he is almost certainly out of the October 17 game but the real issue is how many other Celtic players have contracted it? Between now and Friday should tell us the extent of the damage. A postponement looks the best option at this stage but that will not happen if Edouard is the only one affected.

Premiership Rugby club Sale Sharks have been forced to forfeit their crucial upcoming match against Worcester Warriors after a further six players tested positive for COVID-19.
In Italy Napoli refused to attend a game against Juve this week as 2 Napoli players had tested positive for the virus. Under Italian league rules, a no-show should result in Napoli being handed a 3-0 defeat plus further punishments on top – potentially including a points deduction. “The sporting rules are clear, if a team does not show up, it will face disciplinary sanctions,” This is heading for the law courts
Let us hope that no other Celtic players or staff test positive for the virus as no doubt the powers that be will either press for the game against Sevco to go ahead with a very much weakened Celtic team or just watch the demand for us forfeit the match over health concerns if a couple of other players test positive. Can’t say i understand how an individual obviously received a negative test result on Sunday but then tests positive for the virus on a Tuesday?
Apparently also recent research indicates that 20% of individuals who test positive for Covid 19 are asymptomatic and, at present, suffer no known ill effects from the virus albeit they can still infect others.

Litany of financial mismanagement here. The details are shocking, players being punted for free just to get them off the wage bill.

October 7, 2020 1:33 pm

Scottish Football Authorities have announced if the Celtic v Rangers match on 17 October has to be cancelled then Rangers will be awarded a 4-0 victory. It would have been 3-0 but they’ve been awarded an early penalty! 😁

October 7, 2020 2:41 pm

Just a wee thought. Maybe the Sky TV deal may ensure that the game is postponed rather that Celtic having to forfeit it should any further squad members test positive. Can’t see the SPFL and other clubs out with Sevco being happy should the game not be played and a big chunk of money having to be returned to Sky.

Even worse, All Pubs in Glasgow & Central Belt to close on Friday at 6pm till 25 October.

So it has spread.

Whoever ordered the shitshow, it is ready for collection 😉

That’s the OF game postponed then.
Just to keep the tension high.

October 7, 2020 3:24 pm

I said on here about three weeks ago that the pubs would be shut for that match. It’s not a coincidence that the date falls right in the middle.

October 7, 2020 3:51 pm

Christie has to self isolate. No huns game for him.

October 7, 2020 3:54 pm

It’s ludicrous when you think about it. Stuart Armstrong,Kieran Tierney and Ryan Christie obviously were catching up on old times as former team-mates and so identified as close contacts. But I doubt they would have been in as close contact with each other as they would be with opposition players during a match.

The law is an ass!

October 7, 2020 4:49 pm

Bobby, I wouldn’t trust the SFA with our players safety, I would suggest that Lawwell should withdraw our players immediately. If their previous efforts are anything to go by Scottish football will be shut down, they’re useless.

So Armstrong,Tierney and Christie have to isolate at the team hotel in Edinburgh. Why the feck they staying in Edinburgh when the game is in Glasgow have we no hotels in Glasgow 🤔🤔

October 7, 2020 6:44 pm

Are there not already restrictions on the hospitality industry in Glasgow? Genuine question from an exile in Swindon.

October 7, 2020 6:58 pm

Not sure I thought hotels had opened back up but not 100% sure. Anyway i am just miffed my local got to shut again after Friday 🤬🤬🤬😭😭

So if the derby game goes ahead pubs shut!
Be a few pissed at that.

Bobby, plenty of the bigger hotel chains are still doing trade, some of the smaller ones too. Some are currently being used to house homeless people in Glasgow.

October 7, 2020 7:11 pm

Not to mention Irvine No 1 CSC. Which screws up my family’s plans for the day.

October 7, 2020 7:11 pm

It will force a lot of house parties if it goes ahead.

October 7, 2020 7:15 pm

There is still a ban on music/sound from tv,s in pubs, so if the pubs were open it would be crap viewing and u cant shout or sing either.
I think the Irvine no1 csc is shut at moment due to covid anyway
