What A Bloody Mess.

Morning,all.

Abject. Awful. Pitiful. Tragic.

Just a few of the words that posters used last night to describe our performance over the two legged tie against Danish giants Midtjylland. Out of Europe without winning a game,or back before the postcards as the old gag goes.

We actually started out well enough in both legs, but as the midfield fell away-and our forwards line was woefully inept-so the pressure on the defence became unbearable. What you see is what you get,and we got what we deserved. That is,we got embarrassed.

We’ve harped on for a while on here about the size of the rebuild required, and last night exposed that painfully to the last few who would still deny it. Quite frankly, when Anthony Ralston and two teenage centre backs are probably your best players, then you have big problems.

When you have an international striker coming on as a late substitute and he can’t even get up to the pace of a clearly disinterested Edouard, then you have big problems. And when your midfield are having trouble stringing two passes together, then again you have big problems.

We have got problems all over the pitch, problems with quality and quantity, problems with attitude,so many problems that AP probably doesn’t know where to start.

I know I don’t!

But as the old saying goes,I wouldn’t start from here!!!

It’s Tynecastle at the weekend and the huns before the end of the transfer window. Hell knows where we will be by then, what shape we will be in,or even who will be in our squad. I’m not much given to misplaced optimism-you may have noticed!-but I’ve rarely been as pessimistic as I am currently.

As you know,I’m not blaming AP or Dom for this,we know they have a huge task ahead. Last night,it probably got bigger for them-because based on that, which player in their right mind would want to join us?

What a bloody mess, and all so easily avoidable.

The glorious balance sheet

It’s taken 3 years to dismantle Celtic and put the club into this state.

It’ll take much more than that to put Celtic back together again.

We can’t say we weren’t warned. We’ve been here before.

Summer 2014 and the same inertia and dithering in terms of incoming transfers while speedily selling and releasing the spine of the team and leaving a left field managerial appointment hanging out to dry.

Back in 2014 we punted Ledley, Samaras and Forster. We dithered and dallied bringing much needed players in to rebuild a depleted squad that was shored up with untested youth players (mcgregor) and an injury prone freebie who hadn’t played football in years (Gordon).

And when players finally came in it was the usual exotic collection of borrowed trash and deadline day panic buys (Wakaso, Berget, Tonev, Scepovic, Guidetti), all secured long after we had been handed our backside on a plate in European qualifiers by Legia Warsaw and Maribor.

At Murrayfield the fans chanted “lawwell, lawwell get tae…..” as Legia raced into a 6-1 aggregate lead.

For a brief moment I thought that the wider Celtic support had seen through the charlatan that is Lawwell and the complacent and incompetent clown shoes on the board.

And then the Legia Warsaw secretary entered the fray and Lawwell and co were let off the hook.

Being underprepared for these European qualifiers as the squad gets asset stripped or cocoons itself ahead of moves to low rent EPL fodder is an annual event for Celtic.

The difference is that this time the board have really ripped the backside out of it and you have to wonder how far are the depths that they would gladly plumb as long as they think fans will still buy season tickets regardless.

They have been extracting the urine for years and gaslighting us with all this tripe about “best run club in the world”.

Sevco have a decent chance of getting into the CL group stages and gaining the £30m that comes with it. That’ll go into improving their team because as we know they don’t pay their debts. Further putting clear water between them and us.

We have to beat Jablonec and then one of either Fenerbahce, Alkmaar, Antwerp, Randers, Sturm Graz or Zorya Lurhansk to get into the Europa League. Not looking likely with these players.

It’s long since past time that the Celtic support emptied the serial losers in the boardroom who preside over this annual shambles.

jimthetim53

Will this finally be the embarrassment that Dermot Desmond takes note of? Or will he just toddle off to the golf course without a care in the world?

jimthetim53

This is for Mahe, who stays up late over in the States! 🙂

Nick66

Twas not a night to remember fondly.
Enough said.

jimthetim53

Don’t despair Nick. We will be back.

jimthetim53

Nick66

50 years never despair,
Only have a 1 game disapointment, that’s allowed. Thing is the one game is getting a bit too frequent. But in all honesty jim i know we will be back, we never left.
Night all.

Mahe

Dear Lord that was bad.
That’s an SPL level team and nothing more, and we couldnt beat them. Twice.

This is gonna be some season. We don’t have the level of funding necessary, the board with vision needed, the patience of the support during the rebuild, and now more than likely lost the second biggest source of income, I don’t think we will get through into UEFA league, the conference won’t bring much cash if we make it.
And our new manager isn’t happy after a month in the job.
This after sneaking in Peter after the STs and being told we need our majority shareholder to get hands on in order to move things along.

A club like no other indeed.

TBH I sensed we were going there to get ripped apart. In the end we lost two poor goals to a team that some have called average.

We know the club realises we need players in – according to KDS transfers page, we have brought in Seven (plus 1 year on Griffiths) – an indication that the club know our existing squad aren’t good enough to compete to the required standard. We can debate later, and forever, what their view of a standard is …and what the fans view might be.

In the here and now, 7 players have been brought in, with more to come, or so we hear.

Last nite only 1 of that 7 was ready to start – for whatever reason!

As you say- “what a bloody mess”

Jobo Baldie

Good morning, friends.
Saltires, I can only think of 6 signings so who am I forgetting about?
Liam Shaw
Osaze Urhoghide
Liel Abada
Bosun Lawal

Dom isn’t doing his job. He isn t signing players. Kennedy and Strachan need to go, a manager should have his own coaches. Lawwell has hand in here still as well. Banker and co have the money in, do you think they care? Banker is a Rangers man.

saltires en Sevilla

Good morning Jobo

I see Joey Dawson (18) on their list – not sure if we are counting him if he isn’t included with a squad number yet.

In my opinion Dom has to take some of the blame.
Still no head of recruitment appointed and not getting players in quick enough.
That is not good enough.

This is much bigger than the team. This is a full-on, undisguised asset-strip, subsidised by 45K season book renewers who were fooled by the rebuild rhetoric, their emotional attachment ruthlessly exploited.

The club is in the hands of disgusting people. David Low tweeting they are indistinguishable from the old Board, but I disagree. They are much more insidious than the old Board. Desmond and Lawwell have a level of open contempt and a ruthless pursuit of self-interest that the old Board in all its abject incompetence was incapable of.

They know the game’s up. They won’t win the fans back round, so it’s end-game asset strip and exit time.

Ange has been brought in as the patsy. Howe looking increasingly vindicated, likewise Rodgers. You’re giving McKay the benefit if the doubt. I’m past that point now. Ange’s open criticism of the transfer strategy – 5 weeks in – is enough to confirm my fears that Desmond wouldn’t employ anyone unwilling to be his poodle.

Huns will probably qualify for ECL group stages this year and definitely next. It’s entirely possible they will win 10-in-a-row.

The bastards running the club won’t care. They’ll have cashed in their chips. They care only for money. They are not Celtic men.

McCaff

Maestro…I get your frustration but the Huns doing 10 in a row defies any kind of logic.

As David Byrne sang Same as it ever was.
Nothing has changed.
We are still the footballing equivalent of headless chickens.
So desperate that we played with a striker who showed he does not want be here.
A captain who shows no leadership.
Goalies that flap like seagulls.
Young defenders learning their trade without experience alongside to guide.
Soro has physical qualities but lacks the fundamentals .
A coach with zero help.
Arrogant pricks in the boardroom who don’t give a F for the football department.
Ange will take the fall and the cycle will begin again unless we rid the club of DD and his fellow band of parasites.

St Tams Maestro Fan
I agree on McKay.
Unimpressive would be a generous description of him so far.
His disappearing act once he entered the building was classic Lawwell style behavior.
And subsequent failure to procure players coach requested in a timely manner if at all is just as if his indoctrination in Peter’s bunker has had the desired effect.
Or is he just a front for Lawwell?

A bit of perspective is required here. A very young and inexperienced team who have been together less than a month gets beaten by a bang average European side. They ran out of legs and ideas after being the better team for an hour, scorning two sitters which would have secured the tie. PSV Eindhoven must be mightily relieved.
We have five players waiting clearance to join the squad. Of course, we should have sorted the manager/coach and CEO positions a lot quicker, enabling earlier transfers in. That boat has sailed. Ange needs our backing now.
It sticks in the craw that Lawwell may still be influential in the background.

Jobo Baldie

Hot Smoked – great to see you posting on here and hope Life’s Good with you.

It’s quite stunning to think of the speed of Celtic’s decline on the park. How we laughed at King’s “folding like a pack of cards” crack. NFL left behind a demoralised dressing room.
Ange’s task is huge.

GER57

I’m not a Celtic shareholder but I know a few on here do own some.
I know Lawwell’s salary and bonuses averaged approx £1,5m pa over the last few years, but what salaries are paid to the other directors?
Dividends are paid on Preference shares and on ordinary shares if the board declare one. I don’t think the rate of return on Celtic shares has been that great since the floatations in the 2000s.
Do directors gain much financially out of Celtic?

CFC

In what universe does a deliberate policy of slash and burn to your core business model make any sense? It doesn’t if you wish to maintain value in that business.
Collusion with an underachieving rival, eventually allowing them unfettered access to financial salvation but at the cost of a collapse in your own ability to compete in the same marketplace is psychotic behaviour.
My only explanation is –
Our feckless custodians originally put the brakes on to allow our domestic rival to catch up, when this was taking too long they decided they should reverse the vehicle but got stuck in gear. And don’t have the gumption to fix it.
No falling asleep at the wheel, this is a clusterfuck of a disastrously executed policy of equalisation.

Who knows when we eventually stop going backwards.

Monti

Utterly disillusioned with the board at Celtic, nothing they do makes any sense at all.
It’s amazing to me how far the standards have dropped at our club.
I’m hurt & i’m disheartened by it all.

CFC

Agree with that view. Like the ‘stuck in reverse’ analogy

Thinking back to the game, I expected a complete mauling, it wasn’t that.

Fixable with a few players coming in soon.

Beggars belief where we are at the hands of these incompetents. I’m trying to rationalise the irrational.

I’m of the one season only forget Europe camp.
We aren’t equipped squad wise.
Let the Huns burn themselves out pre Christmas, hopefully with a few humblings along the way.
Dent their Uber confidence.

We consolidate and AP gets the tools he needs I’m not throwing in the towel before the domestic season starts!

Garry Postecoglou

Whilst disappointed to lose last night, I have zero expectations for Europe this season. We are not capable of competing at that level.
Of the starting 11 last night, I would get rid of the majority. Just not good enough.
Look forward to replacing the 11 starters last night, with new signings. Welsh, Murray and Abada are exempt from criticism. In my opinion, the rest can go.

Hot Smoked

Jobo,
Thanks for the welcome and now a question>
How far in advance are we made aware of success in the ballot?

Hot Smoked

Anyone know?

Europe is my only yardstick, but agree with you and CFC that it’s become such a huge rebuild now, we should just focus on getting ahead of sevvies.

Fairly sure we won’t see that team again. Both young CH are useful and I’d agree on Abada

Sense we will have a few of the others around for a wee while…

Garry Postecoglou

Have we been knocked out of Europe by a poorer team than the Danes?
A new low in our European history.

Left a comment for PHILBHOY on CQN, know he’s a regular here also, so thought I’d post it here too…

A while ago we “chatted” about a Glasgow boxer and his daughter you knew. It turned out her cousins lived in Wycombe and were huge Celtic supporters. My pals dad being one of them.

Well bad news I’m afraid, Davie passed away recently and we’ll be having his service in just over a weeks time.

I loved watching the football with him and just generally enjoyed his company. Back in the day when they came to Wycombe, if there was any doubts in the locals minds how hard Glasga’ bhoys really were, they were dispelled in short measure. But there was so much more to Davie than that a real family man and a real Celtic man.

He’ll be sadly missed.

Hail Hail

I’m afraid the much maligned group of players we have will not be greatly sought after.
The majority are here to see their contracts out before they disappear into the ether, which means we will be lucky to see another three or four incoming, even when OE goes.

We are in a state of structural paralysis.

Garry Postecoglou

SES
We have 5 new signings ready to replace 5 of last night’s non performers.
We need a further 5 signings.
Goalkeeper, both full backs, centre half, left winger and centre forward. Then we will be ready to run.

That being the case, we are asking Ange to operate with his hands tied.
This Celtic Board must go.

Don’t disagree with your assessment of what we need. I would add a tough CM and could we have some physicality elsewhere as part of the package. We are too lightweight.

Will be easily bullied by ref assisted Huns.

Hot Smoked –
Can’t help you with that one I’m afraid as I didn’t renew my season ticket.

I have high hopes that Liam Shaw can be the tall tough tackling DM we need.

Auldheid @ 9:29 am,

Hope All’s Good…

You know, despite everything I still don’t want to believe we are run by such people. All evidence clearly points to this but it’s still difficult to get my head around.

You have dealt with them directly and know how they think and work, I’m thankful of your reminders that these folk don’t deserve our doubt.

During an exchange of comments on social media recently I looked up a couple of Dom McKay’s predecessors. It’s interesting to see how much quality as executives Allan Mcdonald and Ian McLeod have. They are the real Deal, wonder why they never made it at Celtic!?

We look at how much CEOs get paid in relative terms and what they are worth.

Did you know that Allan Mcdonald got paid 1.5 million per annum, a healthy wage eh!

That was before he joined Celtic of course, it was as a British Aerospace executive. He got 200,000 when he joined Celtic.
