Like A Summer Thursday

Morning,all.

I can remember the good old days when Thursday was a day of rest after our latest midweek game,a day when we renewed our energies for the usual riotous weekend to come. Well, some things never change-like the latter part of my opening statement!-but it is likely that we will have to get used to playing our midweek European matches on,yes,a Thursday evening.

Actually,I’m struggling to remember the last time we had a European match on a Wednesday and acquitted ourselves well,so maybe the Thursday evenings is our lot for a while, and we should be grateful. I get a distinct feeling though that AP will be going all out to change that next season. It is,of course, too late for this season. A couple of ninety minute draws against The Great Danes followed by an extra time winner that we NEVER looked likely to pull back saw to that.

I know there is an argument that we didn’t play European football after Christmas from 1980 till only a few years ago,but those were the days when there were only eight teams left in each of the three tournaments. There are twice as many sides still competing post-Christmas nowadays, and that will only increase with the addition of the new Europa Conference League.

Is it really too much to ask for that a club like ours should be one of them? It sure seems so,for every year it finds that meagre target a bridge too far,a mountain too high. And that simply is not good enough.

But enough with the negative waves…

Tonight sees us take a two-goal lead to AZ Alkmaar. The result last week really could have been anything,as the action and the chances see-sawed with each side taking the ascendancy for periods of the match. AZ will feel hard done by to be two down-while we can equally argue that we could easily have scored more. It was that sort of game, and the tie is far from over. AZ are a very good team indeed, and we should take heart from our performance against them last week.

I’m sure that AP will have been busy reminding the players of that, and also that he will not send them out to do something that they cannot do,or at the very least are ill-equipped to do. I really can’t see him simply trying to hold what we have, ours is not yet a team capable of such as we really don’t have the players for it. We do though have the players to make it that bit more difficult for the Dutch by scoring over there, and I suspect that will be a big part of the game plan.

No predictions from me on the outcome, that’s for sure. It really could go either way. But if our players perform to the level that they did a week ago,we can go into the game With Hope In Our Hearts.

Do us proud,lads.

Errr, last week? 😬😁

🤣🤣. Well spotted. It just felt like Thursday!

CFC

A one goal defeat is sufficient and would mean some potentially exciting ties in EL.
Lazio/ Lyon/ Leverkusen/Napoli Pot 1
PSV/ Marseille/ WH !! Pot 3
Midtylland/Rapid V/ Ferencvaros Pot4

Pot 1 has recent CL quality teams.

A distraction from the main prize but I’m sure AP would love to be there.
Wouldn’t do any harm, if reluctantly the Huns make it through. Their “quality squad” tested to the full.

CFC

Qualification might also mean some spend in priority areas of the team.

“But enough with the negative waves…“, quotation from Kellys Heroes, about a ragtag assembly of men going into battle for a huge prize, hopefully the same ending as the film for our bhoys

Well spotted Harry, I didn’t like to mention it, didn’t want to add any negative waves

Morning all.
I think you’ve succintly summed up how most of us feel about this tie. Whoever wins will deserve to get through because both will be fighting hard with belief that they can win. And they’re both correct. It should be a cracking game.
Kelly’s Heroes is one of my all time favourite films. The patter is superb
There are some top drawer teams awaiting in the group stage, and Celtic Park will witness at least 3 brilliant nights should we qualify. C’mon the Hoops!!

Prestonpans bhoys

I’m sure the Belfast lab will return negative results:

Rangers could be set to welcome back a host of players and Steven Gerrard in time for the showdown with Celtic.

This follows a change in SFA guidelines to fall in line with Test and Protect rules across Scotland.

Thetic

Just popped in to let everyone know I am doing okay and gradually getting through all the documents and paperwork
I hope we win in Holland
Keep the momentum going , I like the vibe on here, it’s nice when the blog is happy

Rather play their strongest possible team.
No excuses, let’s go head to head.

Next two games are what we hope for as Football fans- tough, uncompromising, competitive. An expectation that gets the juices flowing.

Play without fear or favour.

CFC

Give both games our all and then reset during the International break. Hopefully with a couple( at least) of new faces.

Exactly what Ange Postecoglou said in his press conference yesterday. We will be going full pelt tonight and Sunday.

Haha,I forgot that the tie was moved to Wednesday!

Eeeeejit…

Billy Bhoy

Agree with every word of that Bobby!

Once again, we’ve been eliminated from the CL by a team (Midtylland) who then got eliminated by a team (PSV) who, in turn, got eliminated by another team (Benfica). De Javu all over again.

Anyway, I’m fairly confident we’ll go through tonight and then we can take care of the noisy neighbours on Sunday.

If it runs to form we’ll get the Danes in the EL group stage and pump them like we did to Cluj and then ponder what might have been.

Maybe next season we’ll actually be prepared for the CLQ matches?

You had me doubting what night I attended the match, last midweek. 😁😂
See you later in Irvine.

Said after last week it was 50/50 in the tie still. No way we’re keeping a clean sheet, but I do fancy us to score as they will have to come at us. Would take 2-3 now, though won’t do my nerves any good.

Hot Smoked

I just read the BBC article which headlines with an Ange Praises Ranger sentiment.
The closest he comes to praise is saying that they (Sevco) did the right thing . Can I praise myself for putting my shoes on the correct feet this morning?

You have a few vinos last night Jim? 😁👍

Garry, not just last night. I was in the pub afternoon as well! Never done that in years. But hey ho.

As long as you enjoyed yourself.
Like yourself, I struggle with afternoon drinking.
After Monday session, I have been a bit under the weather. Two days abstinence and ready to go tonight in Irvine. 😁👍🍀💚

jimthetim53

Garry, I went back down to the pub because I met 3 folk that were great company. Although only in their twenties we shared a love of music on the free jukebox. The girl wasnt much into football but the two blokes, one was a Tim the other a Ger. What a laugh we had. We all had a huggle when they left at 10pm! I got a lift up the road shortly after.

you going to the hoot?

HS- AP never said anything like that, more lies from the SMSM

With any luck the Huns will be spit roasted in 30 degrees plus heat in Yerevan this evening- over 120 minutes.

Morning all,

Caught this wee catchy tune which sums up today for me .

Let’s be positive Celtic and hopefully return from The Netherlands with a result and no injuries.

Sevco are the only Klub in Scotland, who do not submit testing via the SFA,and use a lab in Belfast, why was this allowed to happen?

CFC

Cos they arra peepul?

Mahe

Unfortunately not Jim. Too much red tape with this virus malarkey.

Looking forward to the match, and I think we go through but I honestly don’t care if we go out. This year’s league title is much more important imo.
Struggling myself this morning also 😉

Hail Hail

Mahe

They’ve played their Covid card to keep fresh for Sunday, but it’s also a handy excuse to pull out if needed.
Poor preparation, hard to fully focus etc etc
Post defeat Covid will get the blame mark my words.

jimthetim53

Sorry to hear that Mahe.
If we go out, think of the Garry scenario. We win the first Euro Conference cup!
‘Always look on the bright side of life……..’

Mahe

Football can be so strange at times.
Why would Mbappe want to leave PSG for a fading force when they are close to lifting the big cup and might become one of the best sides the globe has ever seen?
Ronaldo joins Juve and they go backwards in Europe then in the league despite him being Seria A top scorer?
Now he might taint his United legacy by joining the blue half of the city for 29million fee and 200k a week?
The beautiful game eh, it’s evolved into something it wasn’t meant to become.
It’s much more than mere sport these days.
Unfortunately.

junglegerry

H.H. Celts.
I agree fully with Mahe, The league is of the most importantance this season, Even if we do go out of european football early this season, Win the league and we go straight into CL groups next season any monies we lose out on this year we will more than make up for next season.
And deal the huns a deadly blow.
Also this ploy by that mob on testing covid positive, I SMELL SHIIIIIITE. JG.

jimthetim53

I remember hearing that back in 50s? Scottish footballers were paid around £20 pw more than the ave. wage at the time. greedy pigs eh?!

bada bing1

The Big Match itv 4 +1,Bobby Murdoch playing for Middlesbrough, 1974

Mahe

The CL group stages will be very unforgiving if extremely rewarding.
A proper style of football is our best bet and on that front Ange is doing his best. That’s all he can do.

Mahe

Does anyone else see Brendan getting the City job after Pepe le Pew?

Advisory……non football material. Scroll past if that is not your bag!

On non football related matters, I offer my recent experiences. Early this week, the Rebusette and I went on our first trip since the pandemic started. Two nights in a hotel that we like a lot. However, it was not the usual experience. Firstly, cleaning staff would not enter our room. You were set up with enough towels and toiletries for your stay, in the judgement of the hotel, and the room would only be cleaned after you left. You make your own bed. Paradoxically, you get to pay more for this reduced service!

The hotel has two restaurants….one posh, one bistro style. If you choose to have dinner in the posh one then it is a set menu. Three courses whether you want it or not. Of course, you pay for the three course. Choice of items was also greatly reduced, and the price, of course, was up. In the bistro, the menu was reduced and the prices increased.

Perhaps the biggest change was in the level of service. Clearly, there was a reduced number of servers and probably the same in the kitchen because you had to wait longer to get your food. Most of the servers were inexperienced and, consequently, made errors in taking and delivering your order to the kitchen. The hotel is almost certainly going to hit another crisis soon because five of the servers are leaving to go back to school in two weeks.

Despite all of this, it was nice to get away. However, I think our hotel will not be the only one forced to change how it operates. Staff shortages and the effect of regulations will greatly change guests experiences. We shall have to get used to it, and adjust our expectations accordingly.

Anyone else had similar experiences?
