That’s the buzzword, that’s the go to line, that Dominic was incompatible.
It’s notable that only one of the parties briefed against the other, the party with scruples enough to say no. The very fact he was briefed against off the record tells us all we need to know about this sorry saga.
This was no amicable parting of the ways, he walked before being pushed.
It also tells us the board are devious, for no true Celt who felt his actions were correct would ever need to dish out tittle tattle, an act unbecoming of our clubs custodians.
They are trying to control the narrative, trying the key word.
He was the great (green and) white hope, a fresh broom soo badly needed to clear the Augean stables.
‘I’m a people person and I just can’t wait to have you all standing beside me so I can shake your hand and have a chat’ he warmly informed a Zoom meeting with a sincere smile.
Getting up close and personal to the camera, brimming with enthusiasm, it truly did feel that a corner had been turned, and on the back of that premise the season tickets sold like never before.
He had charisma, jest, and no idea of what he was getting into.
And now he’s gone.
The last transfer window was always going to be huge as we needed a rebuild, and Dom delivered perhaps later than we all would have wished but twelve recruits were found. Even a cursory glance shows how much we veered away from the previous transfer strategy,,we currently have four keepers on the books just to give Ange a man he trusts, whereas before the incumbent would be ordered to make do with whats on hand at any given time.
We bought ready made players, a rarity for this club.
And we saw the manager make several public pleas for fresh recruits, something we arent accustomed to, something the board didnt like one bit insisting he answer to Dominic and not the other way around.
That control of the football department has been a key feature of Dermots reign, looks like it has been deemed an essential strategy. Manager after manager has been cut down to size, forced to do things the boards way and at their pace.
From Martin being placed in the slow lane, Ronnie brought as number two then promoted to top spot, Brendan having crap players foisted upon him, and now one half of the double act threatening to rip up Scottish football is badgered out the door,,there’s a familiar pattern emerges.
They wish to control the tempo, be the organ grinder rather than the monkey, and will take active steps to make it so, even steps unbecoming to impose their business model.
We all know it.
As Maggie Mc Gill so often succinctly put it,,
1, Gies yer season book money
2, What are the Huns doin?
3, EPL fodder
4, Europe if you’re lucky.
Thats the sum of our model, that’s how far Dermot ‘allows’ us to grow. Its mediocrity, the slow lane, and means well shall never again attempt to become a force to be reckoned with throughout Europe and further.
Under that model crowds sometimes dwindle, a rabbit is pulled out of the hat to reignite supporter interest, the rabbit is sacrificed, and the needle returns to the start of the song and we all sing along like before.
After twenty years the plan is to tread water.
Tens of millions in wages and dividends paid out for what, to stagnate.
So now we all know there’s little change in sight. Some faces may be replaced, but ultimately that’s the instructions from on high and they will cost your job if not obeyed. It’s not a new man we seek, it’s a yes man and more than likely not a young upstart ever again.
Change is unwelcome and unwanted and the next puppet shall have already known that since Dominics bombshell hit the press.
The directors aren’t going anywhere until they wish to, regardless of how they are perceived. The boss’s protection is enough.
The upcoming AGM shall be hosted by a chairman supposedly on the way out (presumably because hes gotta actually retire one day) and a temporary CEO, two great deflector shields against supporter angst, where talk of change and appointments shall be pushed back until next summer. Once again, instead of being prepared for the upcoming campaign, the club shall undergo a behind the scenes rebuild while adhering to Dermots green half of the OLd Firm business model.
And separately from all this, there’s a Greek Australian with the hopes and dreams of millions upon his shoulders just trying to do the best he can, with zero internal protection if anything contempt for his perceived outbursts, but still expected to win every league and cup game comfortably and in style, plus embarrassments in Europe won’t be tolerated.
Anyone expect him to stay long term now? What about when they sell a star in January, and you better believe they will. Think he will accept that?
He’s probably the loneliest person in Glasgow right now. He certainly has my sympathies for what it’s worth.
Our beloved club is locked into undeserving clutches with little hope on the horizon, but plenty more tugging at your heartstrings while supporter upset and disgust leads to more and more infighting. All while getting 56 rubbed in your face as you watch a national landmark get trashed, again. Whilst a lesser and lesser quality of manager gets sold down the river.
That’s the immediate future folks. That’s where Dermots club is going.
There’s never been a better time to start tackling this PLC and trying to force change upon the club. No more evidence is needed, they aren’t for changing and they aren’t for departing.
We know where their path leads, and it’s not what the supporters wish for the club.
If there’s anything incompatible about the club, it’s Dermots vision for the club and the supporters’ vision for the club.
‘Just enough’ is not good enough !
Never strengthening while ahead to help the Old Firm is a disgusting practice.
Standing still should never be an option for a club that was once groundbreaking.
We want a club to be proud of, for Glasgow Celtic to thrive.
They just want its supporters to exploit.
Next May is a long time away. Next May every trick in the book gets pulled out, from waiting list to hard deadline, from signing a cracker to new man promising the world. We’ve seen and heard it all before. And by now we are very bloody well aware of where it leads,, to exactly this.
The boardroom controlling the football department, handing the incumbents scraps, issuing meaningless soundbites while counting the season book money considering the job done for another year.
The cycle needs broken, if not for self esteem and dignity, then for the love of Glasgow Celtic itself who doesn’t deserve such charlatans at the helm, but does deserve our help getting rid of them.
Our club needs help, and like any true Celtic man or woman you will answer the call.
Your wallet and your willpower are your two primary weapons in this quest, our own ugly Game of Thrones. Your wallet in conjunction with thousands of others holds a lot of bargaining power, and while the choice to buy season books once again has been easy up to this point, that’s no longer the case, not one bit.
In May or thereabouts, you are simply expected to open your wallet and continue this cycle, and your heartstrings shall be tugged in order to make it easier to make that choice.
But not anymore. Your love of the club can no longer allow it.
Their time is up, and our time is here.
We can’t fund this anymore, and must band together with the aim of righting the good ship Celtica before she’s left floundered at sea.
Having witnessed the self serving viciously reject change, digging their claws in deeper, what choice do we have?
