The Cup-Bringing It All Back Home

Morning,all.

Today sees Celtic embark on the quest to reclaim another of our trophies so casually frittered away last season. We start off against Alloa at The Indodrill Stadium-no,me neither-against a team managed by Barry Ferguson. He will be hoping to follow the lead of another former TrifCo player from 2006,which I only mention to remind everyone mwhat can happen in this tournament.

After all, this was our fourth departure to “did” teams in a decade, and we must be on our toes early, keep the cooncentration levels high and our eye on the ball.

This is,however,an opportunity for AP to have a look at Matt O’Reilly and Yosuke Ideguchi, along with bringing on players from injury. To maybe jazz up the team selection. But also without taking his eye off the big picture. I’m looking forward to the match,of course, and I don’t want this article to sound as though I am running scared of Alloa, not at all. After all, they are in a relegation battle, desperately trying to avoid the drop into the bottom division. But you know, that “Alloa, always cheating” video still makes me laugh.

And I wouldn’t want it to come back and bite me on the arse!

******
One player who might be playing in his last ever Scottish Cup match is Leigh Griffiths. In ten days time he will find himself without a club. Celtic don’t want him,and neither do Dundee. It is all so sad,and I genuinely mean that. He joined us eight years ago and scored a very respectable 123 goals in 261 games. Who can forget his forty goals in season 2015-16 in RD’s final season? He virtually won us the title that year on his own!

But it all went downhill for Leigh when BR arrived, and the change in formation to one up front-who wasn’t usually Leigh!- put him on a slippery slope. One which eventually led to where he is now, despite the perseverance and faith placed in him by the club.

A wonderful 67 goals in 106 games in his first two and a half seasons, and he’s not even the first pick? Well,I can understand his nose being out of joint. But 25 goals in 79 games in his final three seasons-while still a reasonable return-is not the return of a fired up footballer, desperate to impress and playing the game with a smile on his face.

Griff has not been a happy camper for quite some time, and while I sympathise with much of the problems that he has faced,I doubt that he has truly overcome them. He needs to,and quickly. He shouldn’t be looking back in,say, ten years and saying-“What if,Griff?” He should, rather,be basking in the glory of about a dozen years with Celtic, and a goal haul of around 300,comfortably placing him in the top three of our record goal scorers and on a par with Bobby Lennox. Sadly, that won’t be the case, though I’ll always have very fond memories of him at his best, the “real” Griff.

I think it is well known that he didn’t settle in England earlier,it just wasn’t for him. It is unlikely that he will take up any offers from there which may be forthcoming-though a lot of teams could do worse. Maybe an offer from Sunderland might materialise, close enough to Edinburgh to be manageable. But two teams in Scotland are probably better options for him-and for them.

He is a Hi-bee,which we know. And he had great success with them about a decade ago. Going back to the club he loves might just spark in him once more a love of the game,a love clearly long lost. The second option is Motherwell, local to his current home in Bothwell. Motherwell have recently lost the league’s top scorer,Tony “more clubs than Jack Nicklaus” Watt to Dundee United and could certainly do with the firepower that Griff just might be able to provide.

This is not the first time I have stated this on these pages-I really hope Leigh Griffiths wins his battle with his demons. I hope he regains his love for the game. I hope he joins a club who will appreciate him the way we did at Celtic,at least for his first five or six seasons

An on-song Griff is a reason why we love football. And an on-song Griff is just what a lot of clubs need.

Just looked back through the trash folders, mainly due to one or two somewhat puzzling comments.

Can someone PLEASE text me when TLR appears?

Jobo Baldie

Good morning, friends and Happy Scottish Cup Matchday.
Bobby, I also have some sympathy with Leigh and wish he would get his act together. Motherwell’s could be a good shout.

St tams

I wish Leigh well in his future.
But can’t say that I have a lot of sympathy for him.

Gordon64

With Maeda being called up by Japan it looks like games are on with our only available unrecognised striker being the Greek scoring machine Gorgeous Giomakalumpofwoodus 🇬🇷

Big Ange’s press confrence from yesterday if anyone missed it

A thing of beauty

I have sympathy for Leigh Griffiths. He lacked the mental strength to sustain a career at the top and was unable to overcome this. All talk of making a comeback at premier league level should stop. I wholeheartedly disagree with bmcuwp that Hibs would consider him. The game on Monday showed what Maloney is trying to do at Hibs and everyone must be involved. It doesn’t allow for a striker who isn’t mobile. I think also it’s well known that getting back to the levels required for even Motherwell will be beyond him now. His natural talent took him so far but his lifestyle has now caught him up. Whatever the reason his top flight professional career is over and I hope he has good people around him to help him away from the park.

Rumours there could be a sighting of the lesser spotted Jullien in the Alloa area later today

The Gombeen Man

Jimthetim 53,

“Mallacht Dé ar an mbanrion.(God curse the queen.) It’ll be the Pope for me.”

Sorry Jim, I missed your post yesterday. Yes you’re right about History. It’s funny how we struggle to agree what happened in a game five minutes after it’s over but we’re often convinced that our version of what happened 500 years ago is accurate.

Human nature, I guess.

Having said that, I thought you might appreciate this article.

The article tells the story of the Irishmen who fought for the Pope in Italy in 1860. They were called The Irish Battalion and numbered about 1,600.

After distinguished service many of the men fought in the American Civil War. One of them, Myles Keogh, was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn with Custer.

They’re motto was…

“Mallacht Dé ar an mbanrion. (God curse the queen.) It’ll be the Pope for me.”

1860 was a tragic time in Ireland. An Gorta Mór had caused unprecedented pain. Despite the unfolding nightmare at home, money and men were found to defend the Pope.

This episode shows how committed to their faith they were.

Hoping for a few meaty challenges on jambo players plus extra time and beaten on pens.

The Gombeen Man, Thanks for the link, looking forward to reading that. I’d heard about the Irish contribution in the American Civil War but never about the Irish Battalion fighting for the Holy Father.
Cheers. 🙂

Good leader. I can only remember attending an Alloa v Celtic game once in my life. Twould have been early in the 1983-84 season, in a League cup sectional game. The Celts won 3-0 if I remember correctly. The game itself was pure pish, but the craic was 90, with the Grangemouth No1 CSC providing the entertainment in the enclosure.

St tams

Your post pretty much sums up my own feelings on LG. What a waste of a talent.

BelmontBrian63

I had a good chuckle at the ‘Ashes to Ashes’ post last night. We live in hope. You’re a baaaaad Bhoy, so ye are. 😀

Speaking of Bowie, I cannot hear the song ‘Life On Mars’ without thinking of the quite excellent TV drama series of the same name. An absolute classic, with brilliant performances by all the main characters. Never liked the follow up series though. Go figure.

TGM

I think that it would be an excellent idea, if the club currently playing out of Ibrox, adopted the motto of The Irish Brigade as their very own. Building bridges, and all that jazz. 😀

Big Packy

Thinking of you pal. I hope you’re ok.

Hail Hail.

ASWGL

I find it hard to be sympathetic towards LG, he’s had chances since BR was here, I am the first to admit I cannot get my head around mental illnesses neither am i qualified to speak on the subject, i just find it difficult to be lenient towards Leigh, and tend to think what a waste of a football career. I seriously hope he can put his demons behind him, but it was time for him and the club to part ways long ago.

On another subject Japan must have some midfield when Hatate was left out, not that we’ll complain.

Evening all…just before the game starts a wee word to Fan-a-tic if you’re lurking. I’ve not seen you on recently and hope everything is ok with you!
Mon the Hoops!!

McCaff

Craig, I’ll accept 6 but will take as many as we can possibly get. There’s a couple of guys getting a wee chance tonight so no better opportunity than to go out and show the rest of Scottish Fitba how we intend to approach this half of the season. Let’s do it Celtic!

Colour Blind Bhoy

Good evening everyone, looking forward to this one tonight.

BMCUW, great leader today and some split opinions on Leigh Griffiths in the comments. I’m in the camp of hoping rather than expecting he can get settled in at a new club and extend his career. For me, he would not be a good fit for what Maloney is looking to do at Hibs but Motherwell could be a great shout.

My main thought is in line with what ATOB said about having good people around him. I’ve always believed he has needed that and never really had it.

He gave us some special moments and great memories and I wish him well.

Game on …

Craig76

McCaff 👍
It is a artificial pitch so might not be a free flowing as we would like it to be

McCaff

Craig…as Big Ange says these players are used to different challenges, the pitch shouldn’t be a factor.
To be fair Alloa have had a better start…🤔😳

A thing of beauty

McCaff,
Can I echo your thoughts on fan a tic. I miss his insight 8nto the games and his contributions have always been a valued part of the blog. Hope everything is ok and your just taking a break.

Great goal from Abada

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

Superb stuff from Abada!

McCaff

Aw… beautiful goal by Liel Abade! Steps inside and gets the ball onto his left foot, hits a shot from the 18 yard line into the back post! Cracker!!

McCaff

Half time 2-0 Celtic. Celtic needing to be sharper and more accurate with their passing in the 2nd half. I thought Hatate for Calmac would’ve been a preferable change to McCarthy but we’ll see how the second half pans out. A shed-load of goals looks unlikely at the moment but you never know in a cup tie against lower league opposition.

A thing of beauty

Just a heads up that I clicked on the link and it took me to a link where it said my iPhone had been hacked. I closed it immediately and am now off to confess to me ATOB. He’ll go berserk. 😩😩

jimthetim53

Tell you what I liked just before half time, Alloa broke away up to our goal but instead of there only being the usual 2 maybe 3 Celtic players in the vicinity, there was at least half a dozen. Not often you see that! It was dealt with easily of course.
Every time we are in front of opp. goal mouth we have to deal with about 8,9 or 10 opponents. (Most Scottish teams).

jimthetim53

ATOB, I used the link too but on my lap top. No problem.

Prestonpans bhoys

Magua@3:34
Thanks for disclosing the date of our last game against them away. Said to Mrs Prestonpans, seen Celtic play there before but don’t know when. She said how come, my reply was (a) must be over 30 years ago and (b) I would have been pished😂🍺🍺🍻

jimthetim53
