New Toys

Morning,all.

Ange Postecoglu has done what many Celtic managers have done, and that is to keep our club in Europe after Christmas. How I wish our voters had managed to keep the country in Europe after that referendum, but that is by the by. He has an opportunity though to do what no Celtic manager has ever achieved-to win a European trophy the first time it is available.

Actually, this is the first time that Celtic have been in a European competition in its first year,so that point may be somewhat moot. But why shouldn’t we be aiming for it? We managed to be the first Northern European club to win Big Ears. In fact, the hegemony on that trophy was much tighter than is realised.

We are lauded as the first British club to achieve that success, and rightly so. Further digging finds that factor of the first team from Northern Europe to do so.

Here’s a wee bit of nerdyness for you all.

For the previous twelve years of that trophy’s existence,it had resided in one of three cities. Madrid,Milan and by sheer coincidence,Lisbon.

It wasn’t just the rest of Scotland that we beat to the punch by winning it-though Hibs and then Dundee came close. Rangers even reached a semi in 1960,but losing twelve goals is difficult to overcome. Nor was it only the rest of the UK or Northern Europe,it was the rest of everywhere bar those cities, and it made everyone realise that anything is possible.

Look at the teams in the finals for the next twenty years or so,and you will get my point on this. Ajax and Feyenoord, nobodies at the time-regretfully-Panathanaikos,Malmo. The list is available, and I think we opened that window for teams to actually have belief. Leeds and Forest, plus Aston Villa. Anything was possible.

Aye,call me an old romantic or whatever.

But here’s a thing. This cup is being played for the first time. And the final is in a country where,if I recall correctly,we have only played once before. And Danny McGrain was initially barred from entering because he had a beard! Back then, they sold a World Atlas which only had Albania in it-seriously!

But now they are a forward-looking country with ambitions to open their country, maybe even to achieve that EU membership that for us is a wistful memory. And they will make the hosting of the inaugural Conference something to be remembered.

Their President will be there, and highly prominent in the proceedings as he pushes for recognition of his country. And he’s Celtic daft!

It would be a bloody insult to him if we don’t win this trophy on his home patch,so I suppose we will just have to do it.

Against the odds, just like in Lisbon all those years ago.

And look at the belief that victory back then gave us-could a lesser trophy do that for us now? Of course it can.

Nice article, Bobby.
I met President.Meta in the Central Hotel following jour match with Ferencvaros. He fell in with a group of Celtic fans at Bucharest Airport, I think, and he enjoyed their craic. He did some research and decided Celtic were his team. He is pals with Rudi Vata, who was also at the Central Hotel that night.
If we make the final, we will be made very welcome in Tirana. How good would that be? Oh aye!!
Just got to win four ties to reach the final. Lol.

Just looked at who are in the last 16, good chance of progressing far, even the final.😵

I genuinely reckon this is here for the taking. Mind you,the league should be our priority. Three years ago,we were drawn against Valencia, and a number of us went to the away leg, even though we knew we were on a hiding to nothing. We were right-but we still went.

Many of us were confident about progress though in 2003,and we were right then too. Personally,my own Lisbon/Seville was the shoudacoulda Rapid Vienna fiasco. Too young for Lisbon, just started a new job for Seville. Everyone knows it should have been us playing Everton that year.

Is this my chance at a European final? Well,if it is,I’m not gonna pass it up. And it is certainly doable.

Morning all & Packy.

Cheers Bobby for putting tonight’s game and competition into a bigger context. I want to win tonight’s game even more now and to progress in the comp. 🙂

When you look at those 16 teams in the Europa Conference the majority of them are familiar European names that we have come accross in the top two competitions. (apart from Leicester v Randers, never heard of them! 🙂 ) This is not a contest of 5th grade amateurs! I would be very proud to get to this final.

Rapid Vienna 1984? B..tards.
Hope they get hammered by Vitesse tonight!

Good morning everyone, I’m a little confused (may well be down to the amount of beers I had in Paddy O’Kellys last night) about how many teams are left in the Europa Conference League.

A few posters have mentioned 16, I thought it was 24, any advances on that or confirmation of correct number welcome.

Colour Blind Bhoy, the stage of the competition is the ‘Round of 16’play offs. Then the 8 winners of these play offs are joined by the 8 group winners (I think) So yes there are still 24 teams involved!

jimthetim53, many thanks for confirming. 👍

It is nice to dream but, realistically, I do not think we have a chance to win the Conference League. We are a team in transition which explains our hot and cold performances. A few months ago many of our first team had never met far less played in a team together.

Of the sixteen teams playing tonight, several are at or near the top of their leagues. PSV, Marseilles, and PAOK are second top of their leagues. The Prague teams are first and third in their championship. Finally, Leicester, although slumping, need to win this trophy as it is the only one that they can expect to win now. Is BR’s job at stake?

Getting past the Norwegians could be difficult in itself, so hopes of winning the tournament are way premature. Without Kyogo our chances are greatly diminished because we shall need a higher level of converting chances than we currently have. Look at our struggles versus Aberdeen, a team that struggles versus StJ and Motherwell.

Nope, we are on an upward trajectory but we have a long way to go before getting to a European final. Winning the league would be a massive achievement, given where we started this season.

Given the names left in the draw we wouldnt be favourites, but if we get to the final anything could happen.
I imagine the Albanians would root for the Hoops helping the atmosphere.
Winning this league would be a dream debut year, winning both would see Ange elevated to messiah like status, and bigger names would approach the club to hire him probably.
Not that I see him jumping ship soonish, I just figure others would realize there’s a football genius outside the EPL to entice.
This cup would be nice but this league would be delectable.
For once I would opt for domestic glory over European if forced to choose.

The early bird catches the worm.

I met my mate in Tenerife 2 nights ago. He lives in Tenerife now but is a former season ticket holder and watches all our games on Celtic TV. We had a good catch up on all things Celtic. He mentioned Matt O’Riley and I told him I think he is a gem, a really top player. I then said we will be lucky to hang onto him next season as “one of the big clubs” will come in for him if they have any sense.

I almost got battered! What do you mean one of the big clubs. We are the famous Glasgow Celtic. One of the biggest clubs in the world and don’t you forget it.

I apologised and corrected myself by saying one of the “big money” clubs. It’s criminal that we only get crumbs from the Sky table. My mate is right, we really are a massive club in all other respects.

Jobo Baldie

Good afternoon, friends. Yes, 24 teams currently still in with a chance of winning the Conference. Here’s the format –
There were 8 Groups in the previous stage.
The runners up from those 8 groups along with the 8 teams that finished 3rd in the Europa league groups (so, including Celtic) are in this current round.
The 8 teams that progress from this round are then joined by the 8 winners from the earlier group stage to play in the last 16.
So some of the more fancied teams won’t feature in tonight’s games.
After this current round, the next dates are as follows –

Road to Tirana
Round of 16 draw: 25 February
Round of 16: 10 & 17 March
Quarter-finals & Semi-final draw: 18 March
Quarter-finals: 7 & 14 April
Semi-finals: 28 April & 5 May
Final: 25 May (National Arena, Tirana)

Everything that is wrong about parochial Scottish football. Old pals network.
Normally this is a Hun affliction.
This time , even though it’s a Celtic connection, I still find it depressing.
Scottish football outside us n the Huns is mired in a football Brigadoon.

my first european game 1964, celtic v mtk budapest, think i was about 11, never forget it under the parkhead flood lights, and i think we won,, another true story,👍

You were in Barbados! 🙂

Another excellent leader.

Apologies in advance for me being a pedantic smart-arse. Big Jock Stein won a new European trophy at the first time of asking. The old European Cup was retired in 1966, and given to six times winners Real Madrid. In the 1966-67 season, EUFA formally took over the running of Europe’s premier club competition. To mark this occasion, the competition was re-branded as The European Champions Cup and a brand new trophy was the prize for the winners of the competition in 1967. Billy McNeill was therefore lifting a new trophy on that wonderful Thursday evening in 1967.

I thought it best to jump in there first with this quite stunning exclusive, before Saltires or Craig76 did. 😀

Hail Hail.

Agree with your take on where we are.
Perspective is required, and whilst we will thoroughly enjoy the “journey” should we go all the way, the League is the Be All.

I think we are currently short in squad strength to compete at the high level required to overcome serious European competition and win this League. Hopefully this will be rectified by Ange in the summer.

Jim,

Sorry! I have been wrong many times. Let’s hope.

Thanks mate. I had to use gold nuggets because someone stole my credit card. I never reported it because the thief uses it less than Mrs Kitts did. Another true story.

Agree completely re McGhee. Disgusting parochialism that confirms our game as the backwater it is. He would never get a job anywhere else. He must have been out the game for around 8 years. I’d love to know what he’s been doing in that time. I maybe completely wrong and he has been at several top clubs learning the skills and knowledge needed regarding analysis, sports science and modern tactics. I’d be surprised if I was wrong but it wouldn’t be the first time.

Great stuff on a European day …honestly look forward to these more than anything.

A true test of our current ability and measure of progress.

It really is The Land That Time Forgot.

Officialdom ( and pally back scratching) and cronyism go hand in hand. It leads to a neutered paternalism that goes round in mediocre( at best) circles.

Mark McGhee back in football management..Have not had the chance to read back so apologies if I reiterate previous comments but it smacks of wee Gordon getting someone in that he can manipulate him and basically let’s him manage the team with McGhee taking the coaching.

Huns up 2 0 The miraculous marvellous Morelos commentator says, fuck sake he was 2 inches out.

No comment on the hun fans doing their aeroplane der bomber actions.

Dortmund had chances missed them and paid for them a pen and a scrambled goal for Sevco.

Prior to this game to win the tournament huns 80 to 1 and Dortmund 11 to 2 favs.

I like a punt and Dortmund will still go through. They have underestimated the huns this half and found their high press difficult to deal with.
Let’s see what the second half brings.

A thing of beauty

Had a look. McGhee’s lay job was in the fifth tier as an ASSISTANT. He has brought the manager that he was assistant to with him and he’ll now assist McGhee. If I was a Dundee supporter I would be storming the gates.

PACKY, 3-0
Three – nothin!
My prediction.
These Norwegians will struggle with our weather!

Huns have played a better game plan than Dortmund who seem clueless and toothless without Haalamd..
Bellingham the much touted English wonderkid has shown little appetite.
Score is a fair reflection so far.

Dortmund have replied.

Dortmund have played into The Rangers counterattacking style.
Slow ponderous passing allowing opponents easy defensive set then risky passes intercepted leaving them exposed on counter.
That centre half Zagadoo makes Efe Ambrose look like Beckenbauer.

In all honesty the huns are a side better suited to European games than we have been to date.
Against the myriad of European teams playing pointless possession shite they sit defensively set waiting for turnovers and counter attacking.
Like they did to us under Lennon.
Ange’s system is not fully complete yet hence our defensive frailty in Europe.
Next season i expect us to finally be competitive in Europe.
In domestic football it’s harder for huns as they are expected to dominate which is alien to how they have been coached.
Their lack of creativity makes winning games more of a grind.
In a fair refereeing environment we would be quite a few points ahead.
