The CalMac & G-Mak Magic Show!

Morning,all.

A treacherous away tie at Dundee United lay in front of us as we reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup. On paper, this was a tricky one,and against a team who have already caused us a few problems this season. And given the huns even more!

Ange sent out a team which looked ok to me on the recent form shown by the players selected-although it seems I may have been in a minority!-and I actually thought that the plan to play Maeda wider as a support striker for G-Mak was the right decision. I see Maeda staying there when Kyogo returns after the imminent international break. Though on current form, there’s no saying that G-Mak will be tossed aside when that happens. CalMac was moved deeper to allow O’Riley and Reo to play in their preferred positions.

United started strongly last night. That’s to be expected when you are in a cup tie,you don’t get points for a draw in these games. And clearly their game plan was to nullify our usual early tempo, where we break teams down in the initial stages to set ourselves up for a comfortable ninety minutes. Well, that didn’t last long! About a dozen minutes,in fact, when CalMac fired in a shot from the edge of the area. He was always going to shoot from there, and United were dreadfully slow in closing him down. A deflection off Nicky Clark gave the keeper no chance.

Thereafter,I thought it was largely one way traffic till half time, and Maeda should have had a goal when he found the back of the net. Beaton though found an old rule book which said that as the ball had brushed G-Mark’s arm on the way to him,it had to be disallowed.

Wee hint,John. Read the updated laws on handball.

Hatate was hooked at half time following a yellow for a dangerous challenge, with Rogic coming on as his replacement. Tam was no worse than our other four subs, all of whom struggled to make much of an impact. But it didn’t matter much as our one-touch man was intent on snapping up any loose balls in the goalmouth. One such chance arrived just before the hour, when the United keeper fumbled a cross. Our big forward doesn’t need a second invitation on these occasions,he just fired it into the net.

Really that was the game over, though United still kept plugging away. And when Dembele, probably the best of our subs on the night, fired in a shot of his own,the ball deflected up in the air for the one-touch man to continue his incredible record. That’s nine goals for us and nine touches to score them. It would be ten and ten if he could take bliddy penalties, btw, but grateful thanks to CRAIG76 for that stat.

So 30 domestic games on the bounce. Unbeaten. A home game against Ross County on Saturday followed by the international break. I’m not sure, but I believe the Scotland v Ukraine match has been postponed,so there is every chance that AP will have an opportunity to work for a solid fortnight with a good few of his top men. Others though will be away with their own country’s squads. We can further assess the fitness of Kyogo and maybe get him up to speed match-wise.

For a side who looked to be in some trouble less than five months ago, which has suffered ridiculous injury problems, had a huge turnover of playing staff,I would hazard an opinion that we are fairly well-placed,all things considered. Certainly better than this time last year! With eight league games to fulfill, and a cup semi final against our foe malign,we might just be looking at ten games to really scunner the vast majority of the media and the general population. Especially one small section of that. Which has put a smile on my face, even after a twelve-hour night shift!

Good morning, friends.
Firstly good to see Corkcelt posting last night. Another good addition to this ever improving site!
Bobby, the Scotland v Ukraine tie has indeed been postponed but I did hear that a friendly had been arranged against, I think, Poland. I could have been less lazy and checked that out but I might then have forfeited a podium post! 😁

CFC

BMCUW

A fair account of a match where we weren’t really troubled.

One point- Ukraine game has been postponed until June, I think, but we are playing a Poland in a friendly instead on the 24th. So the Scottish contingent, such as it is, will be away.

Noel Skytrot

Solid performance from the team last night and I thought Maeda was outstanding with his work rate along with a few other strong performances.

Beaton, again, enough said.

I heard the dodgy add ons being sung from a section of our support, time for that to go. Embarrassing.

Checking it out cost me that podium!!

The “foe malign” mention brought back childhood memories.

I thought the line “Guard and defend me from the foe malign” from Soul of My Saviour hymn was

Guard and defend me from the foam malign;

and as a young kid could never work out the malevolent properties of Cremola Foam and wondering why it got a mention in a hymn that also said “bathe me in Thy Tide;” and
“Wash me, ye waters ”

I blame the school.

For the not so old: Creamola Foam was a soft drink produced in the form of effervescent crystals that were mixed with water. It was manufactured in Glasgow and sold mainly in Scotland from the 1950s, until Nestlé ended production in October 1998.

I was a bit “meh” about last nights performance, a bit of a curates egg, personified in GG.

A goal poacher for sure, especially when given no time to think what to do next, but has some improving to do technically outside the box.

Overall it reminded me of this Charles Dickens quote rewritten in green ink.

“It was the best of teams, it was the worst of teams it was the a game of good decisions, it was a game of poor ones, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of wtf ? It is the season of light, after the season of darkness, There is the spring of hope after the fear of a winter of despair that did not happen.”

AWE NAW will hopefully look in and offer his advice. Good luck!

Not worried about winning on deflected or scrappy goals.
The point of the game is to put the ball into dangerous areas and force opponents to work hard.
Last night Gio and Maeda made their defense work exceedingly hard.
We did well getting the ball into forward areas early and often.
Rebus67 made a fair comment about the criticism Starfelt unfairly receives and how often Calmac and Taylor put him under pressure with poor passing to his left foot.
I feel this comes down to them passing responsibility to another rather than being brave themselves.
Rogic had one of those games where it looked like he had thought he was going to the beach and put on flippers in error.
Hatate looks jaded and needs a rest and was lucky to stay on park.
Beaton though allowed Utd plenty leeway to their physical approach.
Good result and pleased at the variation from our usual play last night.

Although the advice at following refers to Windows 10 and 11 earlier Windows versions will have similar functionality.

You can also buy Windows Restore software at a reasonable price. I Googled “system restore software for windows 7 free download” that took me to various offerings, one of which I used successfully for Windows 7 and 8 although Im not at home to confirm the company who supplied the disc.

Definitely a Spring of hope. And a season of hope.

April is shaping up nicely- 3rd( less so) and probably Sunday the 17th as hugely significant in defining this transformative season.

Leggy

Morning all,

Auldheid,

Once new a friend who returned home after night out and wanted a night cap.

He had Vodka but no mixers.

He opened his cupboard and there was a tin of Creamola foam. He proceeded to have a wee voddy and said, Creamola foam.

That’s disgusting I said, to which he replied “ Do you think that’s bad, There was only enough for one drink so I ended up having a Vodka and Benylin “. 😱😱

He was a Motherwell supporter so that probably explains a lot !!!!!!!!!!

He did like a bevy to be fair 👍

Prestonpans bhoys

Dundee United didn’t have a single shot on target, as comfortable a win as you could get😱

Frodshambhoy

Auldheid I saw “foe malign” mentioned a few days ago. Also brought back fond memories of signing about foam at primary school.

I had a couple of glasses on Sunday with two Tims, one who is a RCQN regular, in a chiringuito . I cannot remember what the concoction was called but was told that if I had tasted Benylin I would have an idea of what had been ordered. It went down a treat.

Chiringuitos don’t do Cremola Foam I suppose.

Auldheid at 11.00am.
Yes, a meh performance from me last night as well but we did the job and now find ourselves in an unbelievable position. We weren’t at our fluent best but as Prestonpans bhoys just said, Utd never got a shot at goal and it was nice for me to be able to sit and watch a game without nervously pacing round the living room for the last 15 minutes.

In addition to being very agile with squad rotation, I see 3 key issues Ange should be focused on.

Firstly Hatate, I think he is a great player but as fan said at 11.04am, he looks jaded and needs a rest. I was hugely surprised he didn’t see Red for that challenge on Freeman. He had a red mist for 12 seconds before that, sliding in on a previous challenge at the half way line then sprinting after Smith before lunging in with studs up and a straight leg. If that happened against us I would be screaming for a Red. I hope Ange plays him sparingly in the remaining games of this season and we see the best of him after a much needed rest in the summer.

Secondly, Joe Hart is not comfortable with the ball at his feet and should be given permission to go long when he believes that is the best option. His pass to Starfelt (who struggles to control a ball at the best of times and is the clumsiest centre half I have seen for a long time) in the 36th minute bordered on being reckless. He played the ball at pace and it bounced twice before it reached Starfelt who couldn’t control it. Against better opposition that could easily have resulted in a goal being conceded.

Thirdly is Starfelt himself, I know he tries hard and gives his all but so would any of us if we had the chance to wear the Hoops. Sadly, that’s not enough, he also needs to be calm and assured and he is neither. Constantly using his hands to wrestle opponents and giving away free kicks which put us under pressure. The bigger worry is Jullien is not being given a chance so is he not fully fit or does Ange not rate him and Welsh hasn’t looked too convincing in his recent rare appearances so we appear to be stumbling along with Starfelt. I really fear he will cost us by being sent off, giving away a penalty or losing possession leading to a goal being conceded. we are gambling big time on this guy.

As I said above, we are in a great position but it’s always useful to keep an eye on where we can improve.

Auldheid- BMCUW- thanks Bhoys, much appreciated

Colour Blind Bhoy

A more positive post this time … we appear to be getting much better at corners. We only had 5 last night but they all gave us some hope and of course the first one led to our opening goal. It certainly looked to me as though we tried some new ideas.

I’m not sure if the photo I’ve tried to attach will post but for the opening corner we had O’Riley going short to Forrest who then played the ball to Calmac for his shot. In addition to Calmac we also had Hatate 20 yards out on the other side of the box and 5 players in a line inside the box. These 5 players started to spread when Calmac lined up his shot giving them opportunities to pick up on any rebounds. So we had 9 players in attacking positions with just Juranovic defending.

Great to see and so much more productive and dangerous.

St tams

A few observations from last night.
I thought it was a very scrappy and disjointed performance. Especially in the final 3rd, where our passing was very poor, even allowing for the surface.
I thought Hatate was hooked due to being very poor and Rogic didn’t improve things.
Got to agree with CBB on his summary of Starfelt, he really is an uncomfortable and clumsy player.
One bonus was Karomoko , who showed more in 15mins than MJ has in 5 years.

Must admit didn’t know about the new rule.Again we were relentless last night on a very bad pitch.Well done Celtic.

Auldheid

CCB

We were definitely watching the same game ;).

I dont like being negative about players but Starfelt and Hart are a risky combination and Joe should just blooter the ball to feck in some occasions.

Mickey Johnson did what it says on the tin, an empty tin.

Rogic forgot his boomerang boots on the night and his passes got no return, but he can turn it on as we know as can Hatate.

Celtic as a team though are greater than the sum of their parts and Ange has had a lot of broken parts to deal with and done well as results reflect.

Aye that was a job done on a terrible pitch with DU leaving the boot in on almost every Celtic player … referee did nothing

Pity we must face Sevco to get to Final

Got to say I was very impressed with GG for his non- stop trying and thankfully for his nose for goal.

Just a wee note of support for poster who came on here last nite ( forget his name) and decried the singing by some of our ‘fans’ who seem to think it’s ok to chant anti-Protestant sentiments

That type of chant pops up every now and again, and it’s always been up to Celtic fans to remind them that for over 130 years our fans have had to deal with those mindless morons … we are not anti- Protestant and never have been.

The support is full of folk from every faith and none … some of our best ever players and staff were and are of that faith.

We actually like it that way, and don’t mind reminding senseless morons wearing green & white that seem to think otherwise. It’s an education issue and boays do need educated from time to time.

Those songs are never acceptable, anywhere that Celtic fans gather … never ever!!

It’s a cancer than needs Cut out – pronto!!

So Jonboy came in 2nd in the first race 🙂 I’m glad I used my free £5 bet on going £2.50 EW. I got £2.50 back for nothing! LOL 🙂

Rebus67

SES,

Well said! I know the historical origins of the club but I was attracted to it because it had a broader outlook and no hate towards other groups. It was the opposite to what I experienced at Ibrox.

It all came together for me at a game against Athletico Madrid at Parkhead. The behaviour of that team was the worst I had seen. They fouled dangerously, play acted and time wasted throughout the match. The crowd was incensed but it was not because they were Spanish or South American, nor that they were Catholic. It was simply because they were a dirty team. I knew I had arrived.

Although raised in the Protestant faith, I see myself as humanist rather than religious. Wishing bad fortune or, even, the demise of a religious group is the beginning of a dangerous path. It also plays into the hands of those that promote the old firm brand…..i.e. two sides of the same coin.

Celtic fanbase and the club are much better than that.

AFTERNOON ALL and JIM, saltires it was balornock bhoy who mentioned it, and well said, now my father coming from croy, colour blind bhoy will know this, when i told him i was marrying a protestant from liverpool, he just looked at wee joan and gave her a hug that was the measure of the man, and colour blind bhoy will know my uncle tony also married a protestant my aunt mary, imagine a protestant called mary 🤩 anyway lets get rid of this stupid sectarian nonsense once and for all.👍

I am half way through “Blood Sacrifice”, the 4th book in a series of six by Ian McCallum, about the experiences of the Glasgow Irish community during the great war. Some great stories and some stunning photos.

Re the mugs signing RITG etc. I think the rest of the support should make it clear to these bams that such songs are unacceptable. Drown them out either by booing them…or singing good old Celtic songs. I realised by the age of 12 or 13 that such songs were offensive…and so stopped all that malarkey. The ones doing the singing are not wee boys. They are mostly grown men in their 20s who should know better. These idiots also give ammunition to Huns in the media, who will always take great delight in doing down both the club and the support.

Good to see ye back on.
