Wacko Jacko

Morning,all.

MAHE refers to Wednesday as Hump Day,as  that is the day that most of the week has been and gone. Mondays though are Get The Hump Day,as I’m with The Boomtown Rats on this one-I don’t like Mondays much either. On the plus side, once I’ve got it out of the way,the rest of the week is a pleasure by comparison.

Another plus to Mondays is the regular column by Keith Jackson in The Daily Record. This is a real tonic on a toxic morning. How he maintains such levels of consistency as he brings us his regular insights into the game in Scotland is beyond me. He really is one of the funniest writers around, and if you don’t read his stuff regularly, you are missing a treat.

His latest offering yesterday was the theory that’s Ange and his team will be in for a difficult second season, because everyone will have worked out our strengths and how to nullify them. Yes,that will be the same sides who regularly raise their game against Celtic anyway, not that it did them a lot of good last season. To read oul’ Wacko, you could be forgiven that Ange was actually the leader of a band who had just made a hugely successful debut album and were under pressure from their record company and their fans to come out with an even better album as the follow up.

The problem with that is that bands tend to have built up a fair old repertoire of songs prior to the release of their debut, and then have to come up with a pile of completely new ones. This is really not the case at a football club, especially one where the personnel are largely the same in that second season as they were in the first. Indeed,it could just as easily be argued that the longer the manager and the players are feeding off each other, the more successful they are likely to become.

The players will know what is expected of each of them when they pull on those Hooooops and the manager will be aware of the strengths and limitations for each too. The players will be more familiar with each other after such  an enormous rebuild last season, which saw only CalMac and Greg Taylor as regulars from the previous season. That level of disruption has a serious effect on continuity and familiarity, two important factors in building a team. And although there have been a couple of new signings already this summer with the prospect of one or two more,I think that the first choice eleven next season will have a very familiar look to it. And one which was learning on the job last season while sweeping all before them for a famous championship campaign.

Of course, the same could be said about our rivals across the city. They too have been busy signing up their regulars to contract extensions. That a couple of these extensions will probably see the beneficiaries through to pension age is neither here nor there. They too have some continuity about their side, but for their fans,I think they will have been expecting more activity in the transfer market. It is certainly very unusual for neither side to be making major signings in the summer window, and I think we would have to go back to the early 80s or so for that.  If the situation remains as it is,with the squads we and they have,I would be confident of another big-hitting season, domestically at least.

Still, that’s not to suggest even a smidgin of complacency. Things can and do go wrong, the best laid plans of mice and men, etc. The wheels can come off with a bad run of injuries or suspensions,or even a simple loss of form, for example.

No,there is most certainly no place for complacency. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day,and I’d rather not have His Wackoness smiling smugly at the end of the season. We have it in us to wipe the smirk from his dial, and we should grasp that opportunity with both hands.

Big Packy/weefra/JTT

It’s obviously a slow day, if we’re discussing food. So I thought that I would throw in my tuppence-worth. Have you ever tried the fish and chips at a Morrison’s restaurant? Wonderful. Beware though. If you’re not a greedy fecker like me, under no circumstances order the large fish and chips. The fish is feckin’ massive. It’s haddock in Scotland, but I’m guessing that cod would be more popular in England.

Hail Hail.

big packy

MAGUA yes have had the fish and chips and mushy peas at morrisons in widnes, the nearest to me, but it was cod as you say they seem to like cod down here, but you cant beat a haddock fish supper and as regards mushy peas never ever had them in glenboig 🤩

Big Packy

I first got into mushy peas during a short stay in Blackpool, one September Weekend, many moons ago. I now prefer them to ordinary peas.

Hail Hail.

jimthetim53

The first time I bought fish & chips in England I knew something wasn’t quite right. It was Cod! It was Belle Vue in Manchester. Apart from that I loved Belle Vue. Oh and they sold me Bitter instead of Heavy!

big packy

MAGUA ,would you believe sometimes i travel to wigan about 20 miles away to a chippy that only serves haddock and chips,, would you believe they queue for hours just to get the haddock and chips,,big shout out to pepper lane chippy 🤩 another true story👍

Just a thought. Perhaps you could submit an article to one of the quality papers. The subject? Why the history of the fish supper of course. 😀

Packy, I always remember one of the bars surrounding the King’s Hall in Belle Vue was mobbed. 6 deep at the bar. But this lady took a shine to me. I used to shout my order from the back and got served right away! The same thing happened at Big Yogi’s pub outside Parkhead, an old bird behind the bar loved me for some reason and I skipped the Q. She would say ‘what you for Jim the Tim?’
It’s a gift!

big packy

SALTIRES, just pale ale;I think, always drank lager😎😎

Chairbhoy

CaltonTongues

Great piece of historical commentary.

At that time on that day I was listening to the English Radio, while alighting from the Hawthorns.

Went to watch West Ham who, like Celtic had a mathematical chance of winning their league.

Kenny Dalglish was being interviewed as the Liverpool Player Manager had just led Liverpool to the English First Division Championship.

During the interview someone told him the Scottish news he exclaimed “we’ve won it!!”

That’s the first I knew Celtic were Champions.

Awesome hearing it from a Celtic Legend who seemed just as chuffed for Celtic as he did for Liverpool.

Hail Hail

jimthetim53

Packy, I used to drink lager as a teenager, got terrible heartburn. Went to the doctors. He asked – what do you drink – I said lager. He said get off it. Drink beer or Guinness. Lager is bad for your stomach lining.

big packy

JIM now you tell me😎

jimthetim53

When I watch a Celtic game on telly, when it’s a distance shot I sometimes struggle to identify a player. So I have a list of the squad and their numbers for quick reference.
I updated it today from Celtic FC website.
I have a problem. Bernabei hasn’t got a number.
And there are two No. 41s. ! Hatate & Robertson.
Pathetic aren’t I?

Magua

😊… Hehehe I’m on my second Corona and just ate the wee lemon thingy … and eyeing up the half- lemon.

TFW

Some really interesting – well researched posts recently – Brendan spend and Ange’ , as you say, has credit in the bank.

Twist – good luck tomorrow buddy!

Chairbhoy/CT

I was in the enclosure at Love St. that day. A young fella in front of us had a portable wireless. When he started going absolutely tonto, with 7 minutes to go, we just knew that it was gonna happen. The scenes 2 minutes later, were if anything, more raucous. A brilliant day.

Craig76

Brilliant. 😀

Saltires

Prestonpans bhoys

Fish and chips stories, my mum insisted in using the Ship Inn at Bowness on Windermere because it guarantees Hancock and not Cod. Yes she could tell the difference immediately😱

bada bing1

Aribo to Southampton

Prestonpans bhoys

The Ship Inn you say? I’ll definitely be paying a wee visit there, someday.

Magua @ 8:45 pm,

A brilliant day to be sure – to have been there would have been a dream…

Saw the footage of the crowd on the news, immense, maybe not the greatest Ever Celtic side but one that embodied the Celtic ethos.

Which one was the biggest surprise/thrill/GIRFUY?

Billy Bhoy

Aribo has a £10m release clause in his contract. Oh dear – FF are in meltdown, what a shame!

jimthetim53

Packy, you away? GNAGB

jimthetim53

I’m away to watch Law & Order Criminal Intent. Vincent D’Onofrio – brilliant actor.

big packy

HEY im still here watching sol kitts counting his money😎😎

big packy

GNAGB JIM👍 the glasgow celtic are playing tomorrow canny wait👍

Saltires

Hell’s Bell’s. That’s a difficult one. I’ll put it this way. Over 30 years later, Jambos of a certain vintage, can still be reduced to tears, at the mention of the name, Albert Kidd. A most unexpected event indeed. As for last season? I cannot remember a season, where I was so nervous about the outcome, as the season just past. Every game was pure torture, so it was. Which made our eventual victory, all that sweeter. Even if it wisnae the real Huns we beat.

Chairbhoy

Well said.

DannyMac23

That fee should just about cover the legal costs of the Sydney Cup carry on.

JTT

GNAGB.

Hail Hail.

DannyMac23

Magua

Selling Aribo pays for the Sydney cup fiasco 😄👍

Kent for Dave King and Morelos for big Mike.

We have to be happy that we have secured our successful loanees on permanent deals and hopefully there is more to come outwith our recent acquisitions.

Long way to August end but we have done some shrewd and expensive business early and with no qualifiers to negotiate further incoming players will have a bit more time to settle in albeit the season kicks off earlier than usual.

Big Packy @924
Every £’s a prisoner.
A true story for you. When I was 8 years old, I came home one night after school and told my dad I had saved 50p by running behind the school bus instead of getting on it. My dad wasn’t happy, told me I should have saved a fiver by running behind a taxi.
😂😂😎

big packy

OK bedtime beckons, great craic tonight ghuys, jim is off to solve a murder, dont tell him but it was the butler that done it ,another true story🤩🤩 GNAGB

big packy

SOL, just about to hit my cot but that was definately a true story🤩🤩

DannyMac23

Can’t see wee Gio having much of a transfer budget. Tis a wee shame, so it is. Anyhoo, the Huns are small potatoes. Europe is where it’s at. Such a pity that our non-esteemed ex-CEO, could not grasp that simple concept.

Big Packy

The Fenian Whaler

A wee copy ‘n’ paste error contained in my post of 2:43 pm re Celtic managers net spend since MO’N

Tony Mowbray’s figures should be: Players IN =£11,400,000. Players OUT =£9,600,000. NET SPEND = – £1,800,000.

Stupid is as stupid doesCSC
