Thanks For The Memories,Artur

Morning,all.

It certainly seems like a long time ago-and 2005 was certainly that-but there was a time when Celtic had two problem positions, largely unresolved since the days of The Lions.

The best managers of our club in my lifetime are Martin O’Neill and Jock Stein. Each of them had a blind spot when it came to goalkeepers, and neither could find a decent left back, apart from the peerless Tommy Gemmell-who was not a natural left back,by the way,and right footed into the bargain.

Just ask Helmut Haller!

I have nightmares about the goalkeepers we had to endure after Ronnie Simpson left and before Artur Boruc arrived. Many of those goalkeepers had nightmares on a regular basis, like clockwork on a Saturday afternoon and Wednesday night. Then Artur arrived, and bingo.

Once we signed him,we seemed to have a regular flow of top notch keepers, and it is hard to argue that Fraser Forster wasn’t the best of them. Just ask the Rangers players who peppered him for ninety minutes with everything they had one fine December afternoon at Hampden.

Or the Barcelona players who must have been sick of the sight of him!

Yet,maybe the best performance of any Celtic goalkeeper that I’ve witnessed was actually just prior to Artur’s arrival? And,yes,it was against Barcelona too. Nou Camp in 2004/05,as David Marshall held back the constant flow of shots from the home side, ably assisted of course by John Kennedy.

A pair of teenagers, against one of the best sides in the world? Unbelievable world-class performances that night from them both. Oh,I had such hopes for them.

Sadly, things happen, but David Marshall has had a very good career, even without quite hitting the heights I expected. And John Kennedy had his wrecked by an outrageous act of mindless violence against him in a friendly match while playing for his country. A disaster for him personally and professionally, and one too for everyone who could see how fine a player he was destined to be. Yet,sadly, destined not to be.

Artur will,by his own admission, agree that his own career never quite hit the highs that he looked destined for when we first saw him in 2005. But he had a magnificent career regardless of that. A Bournemouth fan of my acquaintance rates him as his club’s finest player ever, for example.

His performances shaded towards the end of his time with us,as personal problems seemed to cause him on field issues too. That’s the kind of thing that many of us have seen for ourselves, bringing your personal issues to work with you. Maybe we’ve all done it,if we are honest! He moved on,his best days for us largely just good memories. Unlamented,in truth,as his form had dropped so precipitously.

Yet it was fitting that we should be the opponents in his final match, while he played for his boyhood club. He might not have been The Original Holy Goalie-you all know who that is!-and he might not even have been born a Celt. But he IS one,and you could tell how much he loved everything about our club.

Especially the bit that enjoys a bit of hunskelping..

Thanks,Artur. You were a wonderful example of the fine art of goalkeeping, and also of the truth in the old adage that you have to be mad to be a goalkeeper. And you could take a decent penalty anaw!

TLR,
Thank you for the kind words. I have to say my exploits in womens football were nothing outstanding. If I’d took my chance to move to bigger things it would be different but I just liked being a big fish in a stinky wee pond 😂😂
Update on the kerrydale situation. Paddys maw is not one to let the grass grow under her feet and spoke to the club today regarding the cost of a “seasonal pass”. Now this was unbeknown to CCB and myself when we discussed it earlier. We had said we would maybe pay £100 a season to get in so imagine our utter shock when Paddys maw told us celtic are charging £1800. That’s £1800 to get into a lounge that was free for years. Another near million quid that Celtic are happy for the support to stump up. Honestly there are no words for this mob of greedy bandits. What about all the Irish support that have used the lounge for years when they get off the bus. Oh that’s right there’s another lounge but I’ll bet it will hold no where near 800. I hope the AICSC are taking this up with the club.

Aye he did Packy, loved him acting it, very humourous.

JIM thought so👍

jimthetim53

ATOB, anyone who pays £1800 deserves all they get. Obviously got too much money to burn.

Talk about exploitation. Their shame knows no bounds.
19 home league games, add maybe 4 home cup ties?

23 matches for £1800. £78 per lounge visit?

Are they throwing in a fekkin heated seat and buffet meal?

I posted last night that the Kerrydale Bar would be exclusively for hospitality season ticket holders.

There is going to be a new bar , but not open until October and I have no idea where exactly it is . Im not sure if it’s actually going to be in the stadium.
I am going to a meeting at Celtic Park on Tuesday, where I am going to ask the question re. Kerrydale and new bar.

Twisty

ATOB
If that lounge holds 800 and they’re asking £1800 per head , that’s £1,440,000 per season.

I guess the take up won’t be as good as they hope. That’s a big outlay for folks given we are heading headlong into a recession.

AH the springfield vaults used to pass it 1964 til 1974 ,then i moved down to liverpool ,never been in it ,was just a pub you used to pass on your way to parkhead, another true story,👍

After the split last season, they were charging £85 a game for the 3 home games. This got you a padded seat in Jock Stein stand and access to Kerrydale bar.

Didn’t know that! Ty

St Tams/Twisty,
Their greed knows no bounds. JTT says anyone who pays it deserves all they get. In a way yes but obviously if they pay they can afford it. My point is that we have got rid of a free provision for supporters that is equitable and made it exclusive to better off supporters. A club open to all my backside.

A thing of beauty

St Tams,
I hope you have some success at the meeting. You don’t strike me as the type to hold back!!

MAGUA if your lurking, remember celtic playing liverpool in a friendly must have been at least 20 years ago. was delivering around liverpool that day, nowhere near anfield was in south liverpool, garston, speke area, where joan is from ,but had done my last job at 3-o clock ,had time to spare, drove round to queens drive which is the main route from south liverpool to north liverpool ,anfield is in the middle, drove past the arkles pub, there were celtic coaches as far as the eye could see ,drove past them, noticed a lot from coatbridge i was proud ,another true story👍

jimthetim53

That’s a good point ATOB.

JTT,
The drink is not free. It’s basically all that money to have access to the lounge. I think you’ll get free tea and coffee, sandwiches and pies but you have to pay for your drink.

JimmynotPaul

Gordon.
I’ve just sent an e.mail to BMCUW and Sentinel Celts, mailbox, asking them to forward you my email.

No, that’s looking at it half glass full, absolutely. There was some good football but we can be better – we will be better.

We’re in a phase of pre-season where the boys are working hard. We’re making some mistakes that are not normally there because of that factor but it’s the only way we’re going to be good this year if we work hard through this period.

“Once the games start, we won’t be able to (make mistakes). There are examples to improve in the first-half, second half… there’s always examples to improve.

“The point of the exercise now is not to win games of football, the point of the exercise is to prepare a team to win games of football. I really wish Bobby’s curled up winkle pickers would hammer home this point to fanatic and a thing of beauty on Sentinelcelts. Todays was another process for us where we need to keep building and working hard in training to make sure we’re ready when the real stuff kicks off cos that’s when it really matters and when they really moan”

The Kerrydale deal is now called Club 67 and the seats are in the Jock Stein stand.
You get a programme, tea / coffee and a pie at half time. Great deal eh !!!
Basically what has happened is there was a waiting list for hospitality and some bright spark came up with the idea of utilising the Kerrydale, rather than allowing it to be used by the general public.

JimmynotPaul

St Tams 7.33.
Brilliant, thanks, G.
That explains why I couldn’t find Kerrydale under hospitality.
They have Club 67, but no details listed underneath it yet.

Evening all! This nonsense about the Kerrydale is nothing but a feckin disgrace, although to be fair it doesn’t affect me, it’s not that long ago the dust covers were on the top deck of the LL Stand. This PLC are unscrupulous bastards at a time when they’ve already increased cost of the ST they now squeeze out the ordinary punters from their match day experience and rituals. It might be fuck all to the suits in the Boardroom but it means the world to a hell of a lot of people!!
I understand business is business but sometimes it’s just not on. The sad thing is it will be a success and that justifies it to the fuckers calling the shots.
