Sunday Afternoon Blues

Morning,all.

The football season is about to get underway, roll on Sunday! I had planned a visit to Chez SOLKITTS but the rail strikes put paid to that, unfortunately. And the announcement yesterday of more strikes on August 13th even screwed up our back-up option!

Even worse is that England Women won their semi-final on Tuesday, and with the final kicking off at 5pm,my chances of seeing it are pretty minimal. I’m sure I’ll find a way though. I could easily swallow my pride and watch it with the rest of Swindon Shamrock, but I barred myself over a year ago from the pub they watch it in due to the pub manager being an arse. Och,I’ll think of something!

Anyway, our first game is against Aberdeen, and they surely can’t be as bad as last season. We should be wary of going into this match in the expectation that three points is a given. Jim Goodwin may be a former Celt, and have our club in his DNA-but he is first and foremost a professional who must do his best for his current employers.

He is also a very competent coach, and I think he will have his team come at us early to try and stop us getting into our stride. It has become fairly obvious over the last year that we prefer to lock the game down early doors,as I once heard Bobby Murdoch say about the Celtic team he played for. If Goodwin can knock us off our stride early, has a game plan for it,he would be foolish not to put it into action.

And he is no fool, for sure.

But actually it is the match the following week which has been the one to hit the headlines. Our away game against Ross County. Now,I’m no great fan of the club, but I hold them no ill will either. They have been the grateful recipients over the last few years of some shocking refereeing decisions against us-but hasn’t everyone? The common denominator is the one we should be bearing any grudges against.

But this one,the statement released by them on Tuesday regarding ticketing issues at the game in question,is a strange one. After pointing out-quite rightly,in my opinion-that any Celtic fans trying to access the home end will be refused access or kicked out, they then add-

“We are cancelling numerous tickets bought by suspected Celtic supporters for the home end and refunds have been processed. No tickets will be sold on the day.

“Only those who have a ticketing history for home matches will be sold tickets. It is unacceptable our staff have been threatened and intimidated by individuals attempting to falsely purchase tickets. This will not be tolerated.”

Is it not possible, even likely, that people will want to go to this match who might have not attended a match for say,the last thirty months due to a worldwide pandemic? We lost a whole season of attendance, remember, when nobody at all was allowed in! We lost the end of the season entirely the year before-and even a year ago, attendance was severely restricted.

There is such a thing as the big-game supporter, and if you support the likes of Ross County but don’t have the funds for regular attendance-and remember,a lot of people have been seriously hit financially by the pandemic-this might just be the type of game you can justify attending.

And your own club are gonna tell you NAW?!!!

I’ll ignore the poor, even threatening, wording of the statement. I’ll even ignore the loud allegations that their staff have been victims of verbal abuse and even threats of violence. That is what the police are for,and I’m sure they can prove these allegations. In fact,I hope they can,and contact the police, for there is no place for that kind of behaviour.

But when every penny counts, can they really say that they have made the correct decision over their original ticket allocation? I reckon the answer to that will be seen in the actual attendance figures-which I trust will NOT include tickets sold, cancelled but yet to be refunded. I hope that they have got their metrics bang on with a near sellout, rather than being about 40% empty-as is usually the case against us.

And it isn’t only Ross County who do this, either. Maybe Hearts,Rangers and Aberdeen-in a good year-can fill the ground to 90% or more against us while giving us a meagre allocation. The others just give us a meagre allocation,to hell with the consequences. The financial loss, how that looks to the Sky TV viewer, etc. Piss off a good few Celtic fans, trebles all round,eh?

From JOBO re Player of the Year

*** PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2022-23 ***
**COMPETITION STARTING ON 31 JULY**
I’ve been encouraged to relaunch something that I used to do under the umbrella of CQN – an exercise to determining the Player Of The Year for the forthcoming season in real time. No end of season nominations but instead a game by game voting system.
My idea hasn’t changed and certainly isn’t rocket science – I will simply collate each of your individual opinions on who our best 3 players are on a game by game basis. You don’t need to decide which player was best, next best etc. Instead, just decide which 3 players (in no particular order) impressed you most for any given match. All three of your nominations will then have received a ‘vote’. I then tally up the total votes from everyone who takes part for that match and the player who gets the highest votes gets the Man Of The Match award and earns 5 JOBO POINTS. The runner up will get 4, next gets 3, then 2, then 1.
Of course, you don’t need to worry about the detail. All you have to do is nominate 3 players.
And how do you vote? Simply by sending me an email to SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM . You don’t have to explain your thinking or make specific detailed comments. All I need is an email from you, short and sweet along the lines of “Hi, for the Aberdeen game my 3 picks are Auld, Chalmers and Lennox”. And neither do you have to vote after every single game – just the ones that you actually attend or watch. Your votes remain confidential – unless you decide to mention on the blog or elsewhere who you went for. But there will be no leaks from me, I promise!
For each game voting opens after the final whistle and remains open until 10.00pm the following evening. I’ll do my best to then tally up the votes and post the results on here usually before 10.30pm.
For the first few games I’ll stick out regular reminders on the blog as each game comes around. You don’t need to sign up or commit to anything, and you don’t need to vote on every game (please just do so for those games that you actually see the whole 90 minutes!). Also, there’s absolute zero cost involved although, equally there are no prizes on offer!
Absolutely anyone is welcome to join in, whether you post on here, post elsewhere or just lurk. And feel free to encourage friends, family etc to join in too, whether regularly or just after certain games. Remember everyone’s opinion is equally valid and everyone’s votes carry the very same weight. If anyone wants to mention or promote this on any other sites I’m absolutely fine with that – copy and paste till your heart’s content! The game by game results will only be posted on Sentinel Celts but, again, I’ve no problem if they are then copied elsewhere.
This is really just a wee bit of fun to maybe give us another topic to discuss as the weeks go on. And I think that it gives a much fairer, real time assessment of how players are performing rather than just looking back at the year end. As the competition develops, I expect to notice certain trends – maybe players that didn’t catch the eye early season then developing into regular vote winners and vice versa.
So the competition will cover every competitive first team game during season 2022-23 starting with our Flag Day visit from Aberdeen.
Finally, if anyone has any other thoughts, ideas or just wants to check their email works please feel free to contact me at SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM . You might get an ‘automatic reply’ but I’ll try and send a more personal one over the coming days.
Thanks for reading this far.

With yesterday’s selection failing to start, can I please replace it with FAR SHOT in the 410?

Hope that is ok,mate.

Morning

I understand the RC match is a 3pm ko on Saturday 6th August.
I assume it won’t be covered by the usual networks given ko time.

Will RC be cashing in with ppv option?

Morning Bobby
Of course. I’ll get on it.

Busy day yesterday. Had to record the racing. Gonna be much the same today.!

Will screenshot the bet to your mail addy and best of luck.

Screenshot sent.

A thing of beauty

CFC,
My understanding is that the PPV option for clubs is now off the table and it’s back to no televised games at 3pm on a Saturday. I’m happy to be wrong though. It’s disgusting the amount Celtic supporters pay to broadcast companies and the games are not chosen to be televised. Sky did not take up their full quota of games last year and will do the same this year. Remember last year we played Hibs away and the Huns were at home to Aberdeen yet sky shows some fixture from league one in England or the lower echelons of the championship. I think we’re in for more of the same. I can only hope that the Celtic club we frequent has a plentiful supply of sausages.

Thanks,mate-and fingers crossed for a result! The only pick-out of nine so far-to have come up is Forest Falcon. And I didn’t have a penny on it!

Thanks for that. Disappointing if that’s the case.
I was happy to pay the occasional £12.99 or whatever to RC, St M etc – perhaps a mug for doing so. But those clubs got a few Bob and myself and some pals got to see the game.

Looks like that’s not an option now. Whatever streams are available will have to suffice.

You are right, our little backwater is treated with contempt by the broadcasters. You’d think though any game involving us, and the Huns to be fair, would have decent viewing figures. Uk wide.
Particularly in comparison to any lower EPL/ Championship teams.

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

ATHINGOFBEAUTY

So that’s my GO-TO No 1 plan screwed.

HESGOALS have clearly been fingered by various tv companies and leagues, and their offerings these days are few and far between. I’m confident that my local in the town will put the game on at least two screens. They have three boxes and about thirty screens. Problem is,it won’t be a decent one.

Still,my decision.

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=i+won%27t+back+down&view=detail&mid=A7F3ED72EE8975799C05A7F3ED72EE8975799C05&FORM=VIRE0&ru=%2fsearch%3fq%3di%2bwon%2527t%2bback%2bdown%26cvid%3dc142f489e58a46049b05e463245fb68b%26aqs%3dedge.0.0l9.7692j0j1%26pglt%3d299%26FORM%3dANNTA1%26PC%3dEDGEDSE

The landlord said I would be back when the season started a year ago. He was put right by people who have known me longer than he has,if I’ve got a grievance which has not been dealt with,I will NOT be back.

So then he told everyone I’d been barred, but I could come back if I apologised! No lie,I know over a dozen people who walked out because of that. And him being an arse. Most of them drink in the same two pubs that I usually do.

The Shamrock is a captive audience, and I would never ask them or anyone else to boycott the place just because I am. Equally,I’ve explained that it is a waste of time suggesting that I return.

Though I will,of course. When he moves on.

Prestonpans bhoys

I’m fairly confident hesgoal will still be covering Scottish football. They have a note about Fifa/Uefa/English Premier being avoided but nothing about other leagues.

You’ll find out at 4:30 on Sunday😂 our bus is leaving at noon, daughter pointed out 4:30kickoff, the response from all was ‘and..’ 🍻🍻🍻

Oh and our AGM is before we leave, so a few G&T’s required or I’ll need a pee at Harthill service station😱

Jobo Baldie

Catching live streams can also be important for participating in the ole POTY competition. I may be late to the party on this one but I was only recently made aware of the site below which is extremely useful for anyone that might potentially be watching football via their firestick. Just click on the icon for the particular competition or the particular country – i.e. the Saltire. And this does suggest that the away visit to Dingwall is only available via Celtic TV.

An empty two litre bottle of Coke works wonders when you and a bunch of Celtic supporters find yourself on a Citylink with no toilet between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and a driver who has refused a polite request to allow a comfort stop at Ratho.

Thankfully,no mobile phones back then.

BTW,the bottle wasn’t big enough for everyone in need. And we couldn’t find another one either.

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

Just checked, but hopefully without giving any ID for response.

Celtic TV starts at £80 a year. might be worth it,especially if I can get off night shifts.

But seemingly not live, replays about six hours later.

Even a technophobe like me might be able to find a way round that by then.

I was planning to be Chez SOLKITTS this weekend. We usually watch the football,go to the pub, fight to get the beers in,grab some grub then go home to lay waste the bottles of rather nice malts each of us has supplied.

I’ve fallen into the habit of just ordering online, and delivering it to him in advance. Reason is,I forgot to put the good stuff into the holdall one time. Oh,the shame.

My last order included a firestick, funnily enough,as well as the usual suspects. Did them all in one hit-apart from my shoes, meant to come to my place, seems I effed that up too.

Looks like I will see SOLKITTS on 3rd September. Along with my firestick and my shoes. Strikes called for 13 August, day of the Killie game.

And I’ll see my whisky too,for not a long while, let me assure you!

Meanwhile,Mrs S is chuckling away as she enjoys her pleasant wee glass of wine in the garden. She has got one over us this time.

Good morning all from the Laurieston Bar. Twisty and others who bet on the horses- Ustath is running in the 4.50 at Southwell tomorrow. Up 5lbs for last week’s success but trainer seems confident of at least a place. Remember to bet and drink sensibly. Unlike me.😂😂

Sunday is the big day. For me it is D-day, that is, it is decision day. To subscribe to CelticTV or not?

Celtic received nothing from me or mine last season. No subscription to CelticTV, no merchandise…nothing.

Why? The answer lies in NL’s last season with the club. PL’s leadership or lack thereof, also contributed to me turning off the tap.

However, as Bob the Dylan sings, “Things have Changed.”

The club, through happenstance, has appointed a straight shooter as coach. There is a plan, which may or may not, be sustainable, but it is a credible plan.

The club has exciting players, Jota, Kyogo, Hatate, etc. There is the CL, as well.

Yep, there is a lot to be enthusiastic about so why the hesitation?

Firstly, it is difficult to forgive those responsible for the blunder season…..many are still there!

Secondly, the SPL smells strongly of corruption. The latest evidence is the draw in the league cup…Celtic away to a bogie team, and Sevco at home to a minnow. Same old, same old! Add in the standard of reffing and you have the usual small minded corrupt system steaming forward to mediocrity.

Thirdly, although I can easily afford it, CelticTV is over priced in my opinion. It is also sycophantic with commentators failing to critique performances objectively. The audience is not composed of fools.

Finally, I got hooked on watching Liverpool last season, and the one before. I do not wish to fund two streaming services just to watch football.

In writing this, I have already changed my mind once…..from purchasing Celtic TV to not bothering.

I confess I have used services like Hesgoal but it does not sit comfortably with me. Either I support the club financially and watch the games, or I don’t. These are my options.

Anyone else on the horns of this dilemma? Perhaps Angeball has swept all doubts away in the euphoria of a league title…..a triumph that still amazes me!

Bada touched on this last night, about additional champions league money.
This is great from Moravcik 67.

1. Brief explanation of why Celtic will get more CL money because of Olympiacos’ defeat last night.

Money for CL group participation is given in 4 ways

– Fixed starting fee of €15.64M
– Performance payments for a win/draw
– Coefficient based amounts
– Share of TV Market Pool

2. The Olympiacos result only affects the coefficient amount. How it works…

UEFA has a pool of €600.6M for coefficient payments. This is divided into 528 equal shares, with each being worth ~€1.137M – currently around £950K.

3. The 32 group stage participants are ranked according to their 10-year club coefficient.

The lowest ranked club gets 1 share – €1.137M
The 2nd lowest gets 2 shares – €2.274M (2x €1.137M)
.
etc, etc
.
the highest ranked club get 32 shares – €36.384M (32 x €1.137M)

4. Of teams definitely in the CL groups, only Brugge and Marseille are ranked below us over 10 years. This gives us 3 shares to start with, before considering who else qualifies.

In the champions route of qualifying, Olympiacos was the only team ranked above us over 10 years.

5. Their elimination now guarantees that all 4 champions route qualifiers will ranked below us. That adds another 4 shares on to our total, taking us up to 7 – €7.96M.

Had Olympiacos qualified, they’d have taken one of those shares away.

6. In the non-champions route there are 4 teams ranked above us – PSV, Benfica, Kyiv & Monaco. They’re playing for 2 group places.

We would get more money from the coefficient if one of the other 4 teams qualifies. But it seems unlikely. And unwanted if it means Sevco qualify.

Jobo Baldie

Rebus67 – my own situation has some slight parallels with you. Last season I decided against renewing my season ticket, didn’t buy any merchandise but I still couldn’t stop myself watching just about every Celtic game on TV or my computer. me and my youngest Bhoy have had side by side season tickets for at least 15 years and my decision not to renew didn’t go down well with him. As a compromise he asked me to renew but to then sell my seat to one of his friends for last season. At renewal time a couple of months ago his friend could no longer afford to renew and after much debate in my own mind I decided that there were enough wee signs that some things were changing for the better around our Club to convince me to return. Don’t get me wrong, there are loads of things I wish our custodians could do much much better but me continuing my boycott is never going to change that. So, rightly or wrongly, my harmonies are returning to the safe standing section for the season ahead.

Rebus,
Liverpool are a cracking team to watch but they don’t stir the blood the way Celtic do. I am actually concerned how I will cope with the comedown from last season. I’ve never experienced a season like it and the memories will stay with me forever. I have never used drugs (always to feart I’d like them!!) but if any drug was to give me the hit that several Celtic games did last season I might be tempted. I know we don’t like lists but:
Dundee Utd at home
Dundee at home
Huns at home
Ross county away
Hibs at hampden
Hearts at tynecastle
Huns at ibrox
That’s just a few off the top of my head. There’s more and I tell you Rebus it was Celtic magic.
Jobo,
Good man. Great to hear you’re back on the north curve.

Sorry, but 3rd September is a non-starter. Mrs K’s mum has finally got home from hospital and we’re going to Edinburgh that weekend to help her settle back in at home. Following weekend is out, too. My work are celebrating my long service by giving us a 4 day all expenses paid trip to London, staying at the Tower Hotel, and including a 5 ⭐️ river cruise and gourmet food. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to do it. Will also be taking Mrs Kitts to theatre-land to see Get Up, Stand Up, the Bob Marley story. If the emails for the Norwich game are anything to go by there are a good few folk who just lurk on here rather than post. Their opinions for the forthcoming season on each game’s best players are, of course, entirely welcome. As to whether there are specific reasons why folk choose not to post on here I’ve no idea. This comment certainly isn’t aimed at anyone in particular but on here, as I did for years on the other channel, you sort of get to recognise certain contributors, whether good or bad, and either read or don’t read their posts. More often than not my own posts don’t get much of a response but I’d certainly never be bothered by that or let it put me off the site.
And that’s all I want to say about that #forestgumpCSC
