A winning start

Sunshine, beautiful tifo, very strong bench, stands packed full of supporters in fine voice, an early goal.
Yesterday’s game had the potential to turn into a real spectacle, but it never happened.
Celtic werent scintillating, didn’t blow the Dandy Dons away, but accomplished the most important task in collecting all three points.
A winning start is important, well done Ange and the bhoys.

However a good performance delivers points and confidence. It’s a sign of the times many expect the team to win and play well, that was fast becoming the normal, and we heard about Ange’s teams becoming a better unit in his second year which added to the expectation of a real show from the Hoops.

Why did we not blow them away?
For starters they aren’t a bad team, workmanlike and defending in numbers, plus their defenders are big solid chaps who are happy getting their body between the ball and goal line.
Nine times out of ten they don’t concede that early Welsh goal. Each of the three taller stronger defenders seemed to leave it to the other two, their manager will be drilling them constantly to attack that ball and clean everyone out if need be.
It was a poor one to give away, cheap and unnecessary, but lady luck smiles upon us and our bhoy was in the right place at the right time. He was solid and scored, can’t ask for more from a backup player, full pass marks.

I don’t believe our team selection helped. The opening home game should be an attacking affair, the Hoops fully going for the jugular. That suggests playing your best attack minded players in an attacking system.
In that case it’s Bernabei over Taylor, and G-Mak before Kyogo for the variety of goals he can (and does) score. It’s notable that he had more chances per minute than his Japanese teammate. Kyogo prefers to run at defenders, and with the Dons sitting very deep, maybe the big bhoy leading the line was the better option.

Juranovich impressed me, but that has more to do with his composure on the ball and his reading of the game, often intercepting a pass. He wasn’t swashbuckling though did venture forward occasionally, similar to GT on the other side. Were our fullbacks playing with the handbreak on? Could they have offered more offensively?
Yes and yes, to these eyes anyway.

The victory didnt come through luck alone though. The team hustled and harried a lot, very intent on winning possession from those in red. Always a positive.
And we had a difference maker.

Jota was fantastic and my man of the match before he netted with that fabulous strike. Here, there, everywhere, he was a constant thorn in their side and by a mile the best player on the park.
We knew that, and that’s why we’ve shelled out the big bucks to capture his signature.
Quality players produce quality moments, and that’s exactly what happened to seal the three points.

But looking to Jota for a moment of magic isn’t a game plan. More savvy managers and teams would know how to negate his wizardry plus he could easily get injured.
In Europe the overall team shape and tactics are crucial,,we shall face clubs with a few difference makers and not just one.
To compete we must become more than the sum of our parts, which didn’t happen against the Dons.
We are in much better shape since Ange walked in the door, but must regain our match sharpness and quickly.

Regarding. Quordle, No chance.

The good lady does it and seems to enjoy it.

Not for me. My wee pea brain couldnโ€™t handle it. !!!!!

200 out of 200 in Wordle…your a man that must be able to handle a bit more!

If Leicester sell Maddison to Newcastle, they might come for O’Riley ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

For me it’s a bit of both.
The spacing can be erratic but also individuals making bad choices
.Our spacing in first half was an improvement on last season but second half we lost shape a bit.
Also not sure our players fully understand their roles fully yet?

Fan, I agree about the spacing. Also, as I posted earlier (or maybe last night!) the left side was more dynamic in the press than the left. Hatate had a few positive comments after the game but I thought his eye was out on the pass – too many astray for my liking. Also, talking about balance Jota is far more productive on the left but Maeda is a definite starter due in his relentless energy.
I enjoyed the game and most of the performance without being wowed by it!
As I said earlier ( or maybe last night!) it’s the first game, it’s 3 points fairly easily collected and it’s a clean sheet. What’s not to like!
Memo to self – stay off the beer, wine and whisky on a Sunday, it should help remember when you’ve said something!!

Thanks for the compliments. I have transferred the agreed amount to your bank account.

Rebus, LOL ๐Ÿ™‚

Ask BRRB !!!!

He calls me all sorts when I head home ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

Been some outstanding discussion of yesterday’s game on here these last 24 hours or so. Seems we just couldn’t wait for the season to start, right enough!

I think JOBO’s POTY rankings will be very interesting. We don’t all agree on the things we see during a match, but I suspect we can mainly spot who is on the ball and who isn’t at the races.

Craig 76

Yep- Huns flattered to deceive yesterday. Next few weeks will give us a better idea of how theyโ€™re improving- or not.
Jobo thatโ€™s a vg point re our keeper. Iโ€™ll certainly start to consider his number of clean sheets etc but a difficult one. If heโ€™s not tested ? Not getting involvement?

Weโ€™d probably all settle for that actually!

Toerag? I resemble that remark. ๐Ÿ˜

Re our keeper, maybe the 6 CL games should be a separate competition within a competition.
JH will get plenty of opportunities to shine in those games!

I think they were missing two key forward players on Saturday- Morelos and the new winger.

When they are at full strength will be the time to judge.

I still think that the weekend showed we have greater strength in depth.

Octordle the best of them all bhoys

Agree. Early days for sure, but pre match I thought we were very evenly matched. Post match? I agree we are stronger in depth. Evidenced by our substitutions.

You are correct, Twisty is a toe rag, he’s given me a twenty pound penalty, in the naps competition, and will now penalise any grammatical errors.
I have no chsnce, Hamilton Tim uses my posts, for his pupils, to correct my errors.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
However, Twisty is a gem of a person ( that will embarrass him ) he came from the East today, bearing gifts, it would be pushing it, to say like a wise man, though, anyway he travelled all the way, to the land that time forgot (Cumbernauld) with gifts for my wee Granddaughter and Sticky Toffee Pudding, all the way from Cartmel for me and my youngest, that has been demolished already.
What a man!!

Just my opinion but I wouldn’t treat the goalie different from any other player. They can be match winners (like against Barca) or they can be match losers. They can be talking points like any other player. If they have a quiet game? TOUGH! It’s not the end of the world! Outfield players can be anon. in matches too. It just means they dont get votes THIS week/match.

In the trial run match, I voted for Joe Hart and I will do again when he deserves it.

I would leave well alone mate!

MAHE got to disagree with you on Akita thought he was poor up until his goal. I thought Greig Taylor was MOTam by a distance

Afternoon all,

Some great opinions on here and thatโ€™s why Joboโ€™s POTY will be so interesting.

After the game, ( 8 of us in the pub, and we all could not agree on a top 3 )

Roll on 10.00pm tonight ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

Still think my top 3 of

Will be hard to beat. !!!!!!!!
Snap, even in same order.

Maddison was a no mark on loan to Aberdeen from Norwich. How on earth he got a big money transfer to Leicester is a mystery, to me anyway.

We are lucky to have Celtic.
At least Celtic try to play attacking, entertaining football.
Never going to watch another game of football again, unless it involves Celtic.
Dire it is.
90% of the games are garbage, it’s getting to be one of the worst spectator sports there is.
The decline set in years ago, probably due to money.
I’ve had enough.
HH. ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ†

He scored a cracking free kick against the huns though!

That reminds me, saw a bhoy yesterday wearing our new away strip with Eintract Frankfurt on the back…๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿคฃ

Maddison Free Kick

Indeed he did Bobby his greatest claim to fame ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Why did you think I asked for your postcode?

The invoice shall be with ya in a few days. Payment terms are 30 days end of month, after which, a horseโ€™s head ( which may well resemble our own Simply Charming) will appear in yer bed. ๐Ÿด

On that note – Electric love goes on Wednesday at Yarmouth. Iโ€™ll await the lowdown.

Twisty 8.53.

I remember that free kick well. I was watching that game live at the time. Absolute sickener for the rotten mob!

Another 45 minutes of my life wasted watching that tripe – won’t be wasting another 45 minutes anyway.

Maybe not the news you were hoping for but I’m afraid the first POTY results will be slightly delayed – nearer 10.30 than 10. Just managing your expectations ๐Ÿ™‚
Still 50 minutes left to vote though – sencelpoty@gmail.com

I’m here JNP, believe it or not still grafting! Will be finished soon then off to Central station to pick up my 15 year old nephew who’s going to his first gig with my boy tomorrow. He’s traveling first class Birmingham to Glasgow direct. Got to BHam New St only to find the train cancelled, the replacement meant a change at Wolverhampton then onto Liverpool for another change then to Crewe for a third change to Glasgow. His first time traveling in his own, my bro is up to here with the stress. I texted my nephew and he’s absolutely relaxed.

My daughter was travelling up last week. Train got to Preston and announcement comes on: โ€œthis train is terminating hereโ€

No replacement, no coaches- no trains coming north.

Iโ€™d to get in the car and drive down to get her. Normally sheโ€™d have simply found a hotel and stayed overnight, but she had to be in Aberdeen early next morning.

She was more worried about an elderly lady she came across in the station. She was deaf and didnโ€™t know what was happening. Obviously announcements no use to the old lady. Daughter approached customer service to inform them of the situation. Not interested. โ€œ Nothing we can doโ€
