Good Times

I think it has been a good week to be a Celtic supporter. While I thought that the flag that we raised in recognition of our amazing championship win last season was a poor imitation of the traditional ones,it was an excellent idea to have it done by our captain, and to have him walking out with the trophy in his hands was just perfect theatre.

Kudos to the choreographer and stage manager for that,I would say. And,credit where it is due,to the Aberdeen players too,who gave us a guard of honour and no little applause,as it happened.

Yes,it would have been through gritted teeth-that is to be expected in competitive sport, professional or otherwise-but it looked genuine, and we have all seen occasions when players simply refused to do it at all.

Which is cheap.I think. Magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat. A lot of players in the game in Scotland could learn from the behaviour of the Aberdeen players on Sunday. And managers could also learn from the post-match interview with Jim Goodwin where he refused to blame the loss of points on a contentious corner kick decision prior to Jota’s Goal Of The Season contender.

I’ve long stated on here my respect and admiration for him,and I hope that he is a success at his new club. I certainly wish him well.

I didn’t see the first half, due to complications with the link-and a minor disagreement with the landlord of the Swindon Shamrock club-but thanks to my good pal-no names,no pack drill-I was tuned in for the second half. What a goal, but Abada,G-Mak and Kyogo couldn’t do right for doing wrong.

One of those days? Aye,probably. But they were our top scorers last season,so let’s hit the ground running on Saturday, lads. Oh,and my favourite player,Maeda, needs to get that ten bob bit off his napper-he headed a cross straight back where it came from!

Still, three points, somewhat comfortably achieved. All good, and especially so since it came on the back of one of the best pieces of news that I’ve heard as a Celtic supporter for a long time.

That, frankly,is the best news apart from Celtic winning that I have heard for some time from our club. He has brought nothing to us,apart from calling us fascists and supporting his CEO in his lies to the AGM about the 5WA. Awright,he left a miniature of possibly the worst whisky on the market-ScottishLeader,I think it’s called-at official functions, but it is so bad that the tables had most of them untouched at the end of the night.

There’s your legacy,Mr Bankier. Not much,is it? Every single chairman since Fergus came in has been widely respected and admired. Even John Reid, who I thought was terrific, but was forced out by a combination of two factors-his support for the war in Iraq, which was anathema to a wide section of the support, and his vow that we would no longer accept being treated as different from anyone else, which seemed to seal his fate.

What did Bankier do in his time? Lord it over the support-tick. Treat us like shit on his shoes-tick. Go along with the continuity lie,the club never died-tick.

Piss off every Celtic supporter-dick. And no,that isn’t a typo.

I’ll say one thing about his Scottish Leader though. Our good friend ACGR is a bit of a whisky fiend, and usually at the top end of the market. Knows his stuff, that man-and is very generous with it too. He has sent me down a few of his bottlings, and if I come across all Jilly Goulding here,I didn’t realise that whisky tasted of anything except whisky until I’d tried them! Of course, with me and SOLKITTS having got back in touch a number of years ago,I know more about these things now. We both try to impress when I hit Essex, and rarely fail.

ACGR phoned me one night after a Celtic do. Bloody hunners of these wee miniatures left over,so I grabbed as many as I could. Eh,but it’s crap? Aye,but once I’ve had a whack of the good stuff,so are my tastebuds,he reckoned.

Got a point,I suppose. ACGR said he was clinking as he staggered back to his hotel!

So there you go,Mr Bankier. Your one success at Celtic. Note it in your diary,I doubt it will be full. You go with my blessing, and I wish you well. You will not be missed.

Bobby, there needs to be a banner for his departure, a very straight to the point banner.

Goodwin looks as though he wants to build, that was a pretty young team, and his team didn’t resort to booting the opponent, two plus marks.
The fact he’s going down the talented foreigners route like ourselves could be construed as good news given if any shine we could pluck them. The keeper looked alright. It was the power on Jotas shot defeated him, his hands were heading the right direction.
The Dons should challenge for third, that could be a good tussle actually with Neilson and the Hi-bees both fancying that slot. If all three are pushing each other and the presumed second place team underperform,,,,

Hail Hail

As if Bankier going after 11 years will make any difference?
If he was ineffectual in his tenure, which is the general gist of most arguments, what makes you think the next guy will be any different?
Purely a token position, which simply pays lip service to the majority shareholder and acolytes.

As I said in the article, all the previous incumbents were respected. Banker certainly was not. Yes,it remains to be seen how his replacement performs, and you may well be right. But Bankier has set a high bar for incompetence.

August 4, 2022 6:11 am

Bankier going is certainly welcomed. Will his successor be any better? Well depends on his remit. He’ll do well to support Ange if he wants to endear himself to the support.
If he wants to alienate himself to the fans but wants to impress DD then it’ll probably be more of the same.

What did Frankie Boyle say recently re BJ going and his potential successor?

“We don’t want to be tunnelling our way out of R Kelly’s house and finding ourselves in Prince Andrews basement”

The banner for Bankier should say DON’T LET THE DOOR HIT YER ARSE ON THE WAY OUT.

A strange man is Bankier. Maybe, announcing his departure with 6 months notice is a requirement under Market rules? ….or a heat shield around the Director’s Box?

The real question: why not announce his successor now?

Couldn’t be… could it?!

Hi totally agree about Bankier, called us racist as well did he not? Great he is going but surely his pal Lawwell can’t be replacing him? Another charlatan.

Bankier could pass you in the stands unnoticed a complete non entity. However the elephant is still in the room, dethroned but not resigned from the board.

Coming back as chairman would be a one finger job 👆to the supporters because they don’t care.

As much as Bankier going is welcome.
I’m sure Desmond will replace him with another one of his yes men. And we know who that is going to be.
Until Desmond goes nothing will change at the club.
He appointed a CEO just over a year ago and when he saw what the guy wanted to do to change and modernise the club , he shat himself, sacked him and replaced him with someone who had been at the club 9 years.

We live in hope

None of the above. They did line up but I only saw Johnny Hayes applaud. They had two bookings ( to our one) and 12 fouls to our 11 ( from a 70/30 possession ! )which continues the theme from last season where the opposition are not penalised for fouls. I took in Man City v Brighton (3-0) last season and the difference in the ref blowing for fouls on City was stark
Coming through the back of Hatate was deliberate and sneaky as was the elbow to his nose later.
They had no adventure, no belief ( Willie Miller) and no shot on target until 35 minutes.
Their fans have borrowed and embellished the klan songbook and I wish them no luck at all in the coming season.
This is the team that finished ninth with better players… a Millwall of a football club .

August 4, 2022 11:10 am

I stand corrected, and it is indeed you who is closer to the facts on this one.

There was only a fleeting glimpse of the guard of honour as Callum walked onto the pitch with the trophy. As he approached,Jonny Hayes was the only player to applaud. As he placed it down,it was to Callum’s left-our right,as we viewed it-that the players applauded. The players on Callum’s right did not,as you correctly point out.

Applauding through gritted teeth is one thing,as I pointed out. Refusing to do so at all is just cheap.

Bobby….I recorded the game on Sky on Sunday but haven’t had time to watch it back. The TIFO was absolutely fantastic, well played to anyone and everyone involved in putting it together. What an incredible display! At the time it struck me that being a part of the TIFO is pretty uninspiring as you cannot see the full effect of it in the moment – at the 125 game the wee fella and I arrived just as the TIFO was being displayed so we were able to stand at the top of the stairs and take in the whole beauty of it, that night was unbelievable on so many levels but he TIFO was an incredible way to start the show. It does bring home what a special Club we really are!
Feck Wankier and the Board, Hail Hail, Celtic!

‘A Millwall of a football club .’

brilliant phrase

August 4, 2022 12:35 pm

Via the DR,and things might still change, this is how the CL groups are shaping up.

Pot 1

Manchester City, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, AC Milan, PSG, Porto, Ajax

Pot 2

Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Tottenham RB Leipzig

Pot 3

Borussia Dortmund, RB Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter, Napoli, Sporting, Bayer Leverkusen, TBC

Pot 4

Marseille, Celtic, Club Brugge, TBC, TBC, TBC, TBC, TBC

Obviously,ATHINGOFBEAUTY will be hoping we draw Real, Madrid and not Barcelona. She’s sick to death of them, and has never seen us play Real Madrid. Personally,I’m bricking it just looking at everyone in the pots above us.

But if we get drawn against Leverkusen,as we did last year,I’m on the plane. My Dad and I had a great time. Hopefully,so too did FRIESDORFER. And maybe we can avoid the junior gestapo clown at customs on the way in this time. Honestly, twenty minutes he questioned us,purpose of visit, etc. I felt like telling him I didnae bloody vote for Brexit, right!

I felt like strangling him,in fact. But if we get that draw,I’m off!

So the selfish Green Brigade spent 22 thousand on a spectacular and beautiful tifo for the team and fellow fans enjoyment?
A totally selfish and self serving act when they could have given the money as a parting gift to our well loved and one who will be sorely missed departing chairman MrBankier.
A one way rocket to outer space would be perfect for the charlatan.

Bobby, re Champions League draw my own preference would be Eintracht, Porto or Ajax from Pot 1 and Tottenham ot Liverpool from pot 2. But the reality is that we should simply be hoping for a reasonable pot 3 team to win against head to head and drop into the Europa.

Afternoon all,

Eintracht Frankfurt, Sevilla and Salzburg for me.

If so, get those passports ready 👍👍

I think we are undefeated against Man City in Europe. Sod,it,I’ll take them.

Sevilla,no brainer,it holds such good memories for us all.

Leverkusen,as I said earlier.

That’s a bit of a bucket list, but hell I would love to fill that bucket.

August 4, 2022 3:06 pm

Seriously,£22k? Wow.

August 4, 2022 3:18 pm

The effort and fundraising to produce such a wonderful display by the Green Brigade was fantastic.

August 4, 2022 3:21 pm

I was outside The Rock on Falls Road about six years ago. A wee discussion with a bloke while we were having a smoke.

He was appalled when I mentioned some of the people I knew in Belfast, what the hell are you doing mixing with people like that?

It’s actually a good question. I like to think that my reply was pretty good too,and answered it.

Be a struggle to even get a Europa league place. Would love to get Napoli always wanted to see Celtic play in Naples. What is it they say see Naples and die. Knowing my luck I will likely get stabbed to death by a Napoli ultra.

August 4, 2022 3:44 pm

Plus I also want Real. I want to take my inflatable wee Jinky along with me to remind them how the wee man tormented their team in Di Stefanos testimonial

August 4, 2022 3:49 pm

Just have to make sure that I don’t pack my inflatable Suzy instead of my inflatable Jinky could be embarrassing at baggage control if I did that

August 4, 2022 4:07 pm

Nana…wouldn’t you just pack both…those Madrid hostels can be lonely places…😍

August 4, 2022 4:14 pm

EF, TH, and either Benfica ( if they make it) or Sporting would be my handpicked draw.

RM, Liverpool and Inter would be a challenge.

Whatever we face is likely to be gruelling.
More so this season as the games come thick n fast before WC in mid November.

August 4, 2022 4:18 pm

McCaff Madrid is a great city for a away trip spent 3 days there before we hit Seville. One of my mates grandfather had fought with the International Brigade so he had his grandfathers name and International Brigade on the back of his hoops. It was amazing the amount of older people who came up to him to shake his hand. Saying that their were others who didn’t like it

August 4, 2022 4:27 pm

Out of curiosity I checked who our domestic opponents are after each group game:
Livi (H)
St M (A)
St J (A)
Hibs (H)
Livi (A)
D U (H)

Hopefully our domestic form doesn’t suffer.

August 4, 2022 4:47 pm

CFC I hate to sound arrogant but everyone of those teams that we play after our Euro ties should be blown away

August 4, 2022 5:18 pm

Agree. Could have had tougher games- Hearts away etc.

Livi away the only potential banana skin.
