The Times,They Are A-Changing
Morning,all.
Perhaps belatedly,I’ll offer my congratulations to the England women who lifted the title for their country. It’s not grudged or anything, the reason for being a tad late is that other topics take priority.
It was interesting to read Chris Sutton’s article which congratulated the players for their nous in playing out the game beside the corner flag,as well as their manager for the substitutions. Both goals were scored by subs, and a third was only just passed up.
So let’s rewind thirty years then. Actually, let’s rewind forty years. On occasion,if I wasn’t heading to the pub on a Sunday,my Dad and I would plank ourselves in front of the telly to watch that new-fangled Channel Four, and its coverage of American Football. My Dad and I will watch football anywhere, eleven ants playing another eleven,we would be enthralled. It didn’t happen that often,to be honest. Most of the time,my Mum commandeered the telly, plus my Dad worked shifts.
But when it did,we had a great time.
But it wisnae fitba!
For starters, how many players are they allowed to have during a game? I used to pish myself laughing because players had numbers like 83 on their back,or 99. I was used to the 1-12.
But heyho, times evolve. And now,the winner of the women’s Euros can field five substitutes in a match,as can we. In any game. And with a squad as strong as ours-domestically,at least-I reckon that is a starter for ten. We can have the likes of Kyogo or Maeda running the opposition into the ground, then making way for the brutal finishing of G-Mak. Or Abada,Forrest. We can have the mids putting in their all,and bring on David Turnbull et al,or the ever willing Tony Ralston coming on to replace one of the full backs.
Previous managers didn’t have the luxury of actually using a squad effectively during a game, though it was always necessary to have one for the season ahead. But it led to a lot of dissatisfied players who never got a game, and worse,to the signing of squad fillers. Players who you went-aw,f..k-when their number came up as they strolled onto unfamiliar territory.
Aye,the expansion of the substitutions has been a benefit. Not just to England the other night, but to teams like ours with big squads, and to the players too. But the biggest change to the game in my lifetime-back to the thirty years ago that I mentioned,if you can remember it!-is the backpass rule.
Thirty years ago,England could have played the game out by passing back to the keeper all night. Admittedly, keeping the ball in the corner isn’t much fun to watch either, but there is a definite skill in doing so successfully. How many times have we seen teams try it and come unstuck? Or a player taking a flying kick at an opponent, having reckoned that the game’s over anyway?
Caveat-that would be me. I’d put him in the stands and be in the showers before him, with a mere shrug of my shoulders.
But thirty years ago? Naw,just pass it back to the goalie.
Then a change of rules, and not by coincidence, the game speeded up. Packy Bonnar was not the only goalkeeper who found it difficult to adapt, they all did. Packy, bless him, could only kick the ball as far as he could, and in the same direction it came from. Some just adapted better than others. That’s why we have the likes of Allison these days. (Wot,Allison’s a bloke? With a name like that? Can he not sue his parents?)
I shake my head every season at the new tweaks introduced by IFAB,and my best pal,a referee in his spare time as you know, probably tore his hair out over the summer when he saw them. But they are generally a force for good. And by banning the pass back thirty years ago,I would say that they moved the game into the modern era,to the fast paced display of sheer athleticism that we now enjoy so much.
Even to the extent that a winger will make an arse of things by trying to keep the ball in the corner, screwing up,watching his side lose a goal. Simple theatre,aye-but that’s because there’s a skill to it. There was never any skill in a pass back.
Is the ban on the pass back the most important tweak to the rules in the history of the game? I do not think that there is any doubt about that.

The pass back change killed the career of many a defender too. Davie MacPherson of the Huns springs to mind, couldn’t cope when he was forced to try a forward pass.
Well played Toro 😂😂😳

Morning all.
As promised, though a little later than I’d have liked, here is the updated table after week 7. Quite a few got off the mark this week.
Our leading tipster this week was Vogue Punter who tipped up a cracking 7/1 winner to get him out the stalls and up into 11th spot in the table. ( for some reason I was sure VP had already selected a winner, but no, this was his first this season) . Well done to top Bhoy VP.
Jimmy Not Paul unsurprisingly got away this week too. I knew you couldn’t keep a good man down too long and he found a nice winner at 7/2. First of many I’ve no doubt.
16 roads is undoubtedly gonna be up there when the prizes are dished out. Very consistent tipping. Clearly the man knows one end of a horse from the other. He rocked up again this week with another 100/30 shot. If it were not for the fact I’d jinx him, I’d be making some cash from backing his selections!!
Charlinick joins the winners with his first winner, which obliged at 3/1. Well done Charliebhoy. He finds himself moving away from the bottom group. Again, I’m sure it’ll be the first of many.
Our host Bobby us also proving he’ll be another up there at the business end. An 11/4 winner, which I think is his third of the season. Great stuff. Top 6 position for Bobby.
Big Packy’s strategy of short pricers reaps rewards this week again when his 7/4 selection got its nose in front to ensure BP stays in the black for the season and he remains in the top 10 in 9th position.
DRM got his second winner of the campaign when his selection won at 13/8. Keeps DRM in the black and another winner for him is likely to see him enter the top 10.
Our final winner of the week was Jim the Tim. Jim’s selection was gambled heavily and the gamble proved justified as it came home in front to get Jim off and running. Getting that first win under his belt sees Jim leave the bottom group, where ten of us remain looking for that initial success. Well done Jim.
As ever folks, spot an error just flag it up on the nags page and I’ll pick it up at some point and make the correction, though as you all know, I don’t make mistakes. ( well I did once in 1977 In Thailand but honestly, it definitely looked like a girl).
Other than that, apologies again for the late table update. This week has been a bit of a ball ache. 😬. I’m sure I’ll be more punctual next week.
Gracias for your continued participation bhoys and Ghirls.

Good morning, friends.
On part of your article, Bobby, re substitutes. Until recent years I think most looked on substitutes as only being required when the First 11 weren’t doing the biz. But now, certainly with Ange, I have a feeling he knows which 14-16 players he will use before the game kicks off. Would be interesting to know whether he shares that with the players, telling a starter that he is only likely to pay 60 minutes, etc. While pundits still refer to players being dropped when they move from the starting 11 one week to the bench the next, I’m not so sure it’s always as clear cut as that.
In other news, remember to stock up on Belgian Buns (I was going to say Stella but it is just a “school night”, even for this retired old man!)
Bobby
My namesake was responsible for the most infamous pass back of all time when while playing for Scotland, even though the keeper could have picked the ball up, he had nipped back into his goal for a drinkl
Jobo, get with the program mate. For retired gentlemen like ourselves the phrase “school night” excludes nights where European matches are played! I’m sure I read that in the Rules For Retirement brochure we all get when leaving work for the last time.
I haven’t been able to lay my hands on it recently mind.
Couldn´t sleep last night thinking about Twisty´s bawbag. Was that just me ?
It´s a 40 part Netflix blockbuster series in the making for sure. We need a title though Skid Mark Games ??
Any updates has the tiny wee especially made plaster been located yet ?
Jobo
We are definitely playing to our squad depth, If our first two competitive games are anything to go by.
Our starters/finishers comprised a group of 16 v Aberdeen and 14 v RC. Abada, GG and Mooy coming of the bench in both. DT replaced Reo v Aberdeen and was replaced v RC.
A fit Reo suggests we have a 15 man go to squad
( AR the other sub).
Most changes around 65 min mark.
The two game sample proves nothing, of course but gives an insight into Ange’s thinking. The players will be prepped accordingly I’d imagine.
Obviously injury to Daizen, for example requires an earlier change.
The introduction of Mooy over JMcC is instructive. I guess when Guchi is fit JMcC falls out the squad.
One other observation – Our midfield three have balance and options on the left but less so on the right. We have options in def mid but they haven’t been tested yet. They will be in CL.
I reckon we may get another face in midfield before the window shuts.
Billy bhoy
I’m with you the good retirement book says ‘no such a thing as a school night’. Kept religiously to that rule for the past nine months and will continue to do so😂😂😂

Thanks for the memories. Stanton, Shuggy, imperious Captain Danny McGrain. A young big Roy.
Even with KD away, there was a sense of optimism at the start of that season.

Twist and shout starring Nick Mascro Tumm?
CFC, some change in the team over that decade, eh? Tbf, almost impossible to build 2 teams as good as the Lions.
Kenny leaving is one of my first memories of Celtic, but I knew nothing of this tournament.

The dressing has been removed thanks to a wallpaper scraper and considerable elbow grease.
You’ll need to hope Celtic avoid the Germans in the CL, cos when I visit, I’ll need assistance to change the dressing. JNP has already provided me with a medical certificate which exempts him from the job, so that just leaves you or the good lady. Not a good idea to have her do it. I mean it’s gonna leave you feeling pretty inadequate.
Hope everything is good in Germany and you’re all keeping fine.
Best wishes to you all.
The last 24hrs on here has been a lot of balls!

Really good chance of drawing a German team. 28th the draw I think

I started attending regularly in 75/76.
The roll call of names from that era brings back some great and not so good memories. Big Billy retiring and KD leaving. But also the likes of
Alfie and Pat Stanton arriving.
I have no memory of the Aussie tournament.
Thanks for posting.
Morning all from The Parkville Blantyre 🍺🍺
Forget all this “School night” nonsense.
Unfortunately no Stella but I’m sure I can find something to drink 😜😜
Gon the Computer cable Bhoys tonight 👍👍
CFC, I probably got took to my first games around that time, though it’s likely I got took to see dad’s team first …the bully wee 😉
With mum and her brothers all being Gers supporters, it’s a wonder I ended up at CP in the first place.
Iirc, that happened cause dad took me to see us play Real, and from that moment …well, you know? Hooked!
My pleasure, pal 👍

77 cup final

I wrote this article before work last night. I had been thinking about it for a few days, the importance of the IFAB recommendations on rule-laws,actually-changes. I only really mentioned two of them.
I had plenty of time to think about another one last night, due to some rather imaginative detours both in AND out of Norwich.
The offside law.The principles remain the same, two players in front of you, cannot be offside if you are behind the ball, etc. But the tweaks have led to more attacking, more goals, and dare I say it,better defending.
This just came on Clyde 2, and I immediately thought of JTT53 😀
Dario G – Sunchyme (Official Music Video) / Chrysalis Records
The one I have always wanted to be brought in is…
If a defender gains an advantage from a handball in the box, even an accidental one,it is a penalty. Except,of course, when an attacker deliberately plays it against his hand. We have seen that happen, and should be a yellow for ungentlemanly conduct.

I was at every cup final from the Partick Thistle one through to The Centenary Season, apart from some against Rangers-including THAT one in 1980. My Mum just telt me I wisnae going.
I still don’t argue with my Mum,but tbh,that’s because she’s given up.
Hardly seen any since, once I started my globetrotting around, erm,England. Maybe about half a dozen. The new Hampden, too,is an uninspiring venue.
I was at the one v Hibs in 2005,when Chris Sutton fell on his arse while taking a penalty. And I was at the League Cup Final,3-0 but I can’t remember who we were playing-just after JINKY died.
Might have been my last, that one. Limited to Celtic Park, occasionally Easter Road and Tynecastle, plus of course Kilmarnock. Often.
My apologies for yesterday. To explain my comments would be an attempt to mitigate them. That would not be an apology, that would be an excuse. An a apology though, just that. It IS a blog, but I overstepped the mark.

Yes-but then I am a gentleman,while you are a good sport.

Talking of equating songs with the blog.

The Real McCoy, thank you very much too. I love that song. I have loved Northern Soul ever since the early 70s when I used to go up to Jackie O’s in Kirkaldy.

That is a great find buddy – thought I was all over everything in those days, with scrapbooks from newspapers & magazines etc.
Must have been distracted.
Specifically, the ‘77 Double and then King Kenny leaving for £440k??
Just had a flashback, that the team were in Oz but Kenny didn’t travel ?? We were Suspicious etc.
Chat about Jimmy Sanderson over last few days …
“ I was on the beach, in Torremolinos, with Jock Stein… and I’ll tell you this.. there’s no way, NO WAY!!! Kenny Dalglish is going to Liverpool …”
Try that in a Jimmy S voice 🌞
Nearly cried when Davy Hay left ..certainly did when we lost Kenny
Replacement for Keegan .. Ha!!

SeS, considering what Kenny went on to achieve, it’s now impossible to argue with his decision to leave.
Jings, next thing you know he’s scoring the winner in the big cup final. I’ve always been into Celtic memorabilia, so it was surprising to me that I’d never even heard of it.
Seems we have always had a thing for winning one-off tournaments, eh?

Yup. It’s a shame CQN has dissolved into a pitiful bitch fest with pettiness agogo. I can’t even tolerate lurking anymore
Great credit for that goes to BMCUWP and Mahe. From little acorns ..etc.
Afternoon all,
Back in EK quaffing a beer in a beer garden but that’s another story !!!
My first cup final, with my pals was 1974 v Dundee Utd.
We were in the “Rangers end” at Hampden and it was a 50:50 split with Utd supporters.
Obviously, someone has not used their common sense
Because the amount of bottles thrown by each side ( Days when bevi could be taken into games) was so so scary !!!!
Plus the stour was horrific!!!
Celtic won 3-0 and it was the last time I was in that end..
Prefer the Sunny Celtic end in the 1980’s 🍀🍀
Leggy
Yeah forgot about the ash in the hun end, if Celtic scored you looked like you had been down a coal pit😱
