And We’re All Off To…
Morning,all.
Well, this is what last year was all about, wasn’t it? That Champions League draw?
Don’t let anyone kid you, last season was about getting our pride and our title back, this season is about keeping it that way and nailing that lot back in their box. In the meantime,we both have some frivolous wee tournament to cavort in. It ceased to become the most important trophy in club football the minute they opened it to all-comers.
Be that as it may,UEFA own the rights to the competiton, and we play to their rules. So if a team nearer to relegation than to winning the title can not only qualify, but be in Pot One,who am I to argue?
Nae offence,AWENAW.
Bhoy, were there some difficult options in each of the three pots above us. Our captain must read this site-aye,I know!-and realising that ATHINGOFBEAUTY,his biggest fan, really wanted to see Real Madrid, said that he wanted the same too. Well, they both got their wish-but even apart from the other wonderful players they have available, like Livicius,Jr,I will not be too comfortable lining up to face a player who has scored over 350 goals for his club.
Benzema is a phenomenon-yet wasn’t even regarded as the top striker at the club while Ronaldo was there! I think people appreciate his worth now,and we will need a player of special talent to keep him at bay. What’s Graeme Sinclair up to these days,I wonder? They are the holders, having won,I think, five out of the last nine tournaments. Oh,and of course, they have ten other players too.
Blinkin’ flip…
Box office, certainly. But will they get the full eighteen points? If we can nick one or three? Nobody gave us a chance in 1980-we even had to play Danny at left back!-but no-one who was there that night will forget how we ragdolled them in the second half.
It is in the other two sides who we can see real-sorry!!-hope. Each is clearly beatable, and either or both could give us a damned good thrashing. RB Leipzig are short of their recent heights, only just making the competition in fourth place in the Bundesliga. I dunno whether their own recent rebuild is up to the job,or even will gel in time. Neither do they,so a big question.
I think we should be confident here, but not cocky. Certainly more confident than had we drawn, say,Liverpool or Barcelona,Chelsea etc.
The same goes too for Shakhtar Donoetsk. The war in their homeland means they are displaced, and play in Poland these days,in Warsaw. Of course, the players might view the games as some light relief from the tragedy engulfing their homeland, something to take their minds off things. Or they might consider themselves to be bearing the flag for their country, reminding the world of its plight.
Those options make them dangerous opponents,as does the simple fact that they are a top footballing side-but again, there are points to be had here. Sentiment goes out the window in competitive sport, more so at the top level.
You don’t get much more top level than the Champions League, not now that they ditched the old format.
For the first time in a long while,I will be getting my abacus out to tally up our points, rather than our goals against column!
(That’ll have ATHINGOFBEAUTY choking on her cornflakes!)
But,here’s the thing-I’m not forecasting that we will qualify, either finish second or third. In fact,I expect we are bookie’s favourites to finish fourth. What I am saying is,that for the first time in years,we have a reasonable chance of beating those other two teams in our group. It might happen,it might not. But we all remember years when we knew it bloody wouldn’t!
We have a fighting chance. It is down to the players to grab it by the throat. And the players we have now, that can frighten or surprise any opponent? I think there is every chance that they will.

The draw was certainly more favourable than I feared. Nothing has changed in the sense that we are correctly pitched as the 4th best team in our Group. But I don’t yet have the fear or trepidation that we are going to get hammered by either Leipzig or Shakhtar; well, not at home anyway> We might even manage to end up with 7 or 8 points, surely enough for a 3rd place finish.
Having said all that, we have another 4 domestic games to concentrate on first. For most folk reading this drivel of mine it’s just 2 more sleeps till we try to win our 5th league game in a row. But for me it’s 3, starting now! Zzzzzzzzzzzzz…….
Goodnight,JO(hn)BO(y)
Given the group…I feel we have a fighting chance of 2nd but that dismays me because I’d rather we get 3rd and a chance at the Europa ;-))

My girl is getting married next week, so my work there is largely done. So now is time for me to do me stuff. But Couldn’t leave Seamus. He’s family. So i need to find a role/place that he could come along.
Today, Im thinking of heading to the Caribbean … open a little place … dive shop by day band restaurant by night

How you doing,young fella?
MIKEINTORONTO
Middle age blues, you’ll be buying a Harley next.
I meant what I said about pro bono. How many practices can afford to do that?
Aberdeen the last team to beat Real in a Euro final
Just got a text from a mate there, who seriously needs a good talking to.
Seems if you inhale fly killer spray,it’s a helluva buzz-but it doesn’t last long.
(Don’t try this!)
ANDERS
Johnathon Wilson in The Guardian agrees with you. He reckons we will finish third, but could easily take second. It’s a snake pit between the three clubs, could go any which way,and might depend on the odd point taken from Real.

I wanted a bike when I was younger, and even a fella I knew going under a bus didnt put me off. But when I was about 24, I borrowed Liam’s brand new and very expensive leather jacket and took my pal’s bike (Yamaha 750, I think it was) for a ride. I should never have been on it, and it Did not end well. Fortunately I wasnt badly hurt, but the bike took a bit of a beating, and the jacket was shredded (which is why I wasnt). Haven’t been back on a bike since.
BMCUWP…am doin ok mate. Feeling torn re my loyalty to the other channel…but by god it’s getting painful to read the shite being allowed to be posted there.
Your mate is a buzz kill…am here all week…try the veal ;-))

NANA
That is an impressive record, given the number of finals they have been in since. And that they hadn’t won anything in Europe for nearly twenty years before that.
Don’t think I ever told Liam that was how his jacket got ruined. Hope he isnt reading tonight.
We should have cherrypicked that Aberdeen team
One of my mates when he was at university was right into snorting shake and vac. He stopped when he qualified as a lawyer
Mike…the universal biking saying goes…dress for the slide, not the ride…did u survive ;-))
H.H.
NANA
They cherrypicked our targets! Especially Weir and MacDougall!!!
We got John Hewitt,I’ll give him a pass. Just. We got Mark McGhee. Definitely a pass, but not the player he was.
The best of the lot though was Billy Stark, who I had always highly rated. Wonderful player. What if we had signed him ten years earlier? Just the complete midfielder,we could have had him for peanuts-and I’ll bet Jock asked the board for the money, maybe about £50k for a 20yo then.
And there’s the nub, sadly. Jock and Desmond White.
Yes Billy Stark was some player never got the praise he should have
I’d take that group, if offered it before the draw.
Managed to avoid Bayern, Man City, PSG and Liverpool. The teams that I feared were most capable of embarrassing us with a humping. ✅
Managed to avoid all English sides – so not involved in any “Battle of Britain” media hype pish. ✅
Managed to avoid playing Barca again. Preferred the option of the glamour tie v Real Madrid. ✅
Pot 3 = Got drawn with Ukrainian opponents who have to play their home ties in Poland. ✅
Could have been a lot worse – like landing in same group as Bayern, Barca & Inter! 😳😁
A possible downside? If we hoped to finish 3rd by taking 4 pts off our pot 3 opponents, we probably wanted a stronger pot 2 side (that would be more likely to take 6 pts off Shaktar).
As it is, we could take 4 pts off Shaktar and still finish bottom – if they take more pts off Leipzig than we do. I think Leipzig, Shaktar and ourselves can take pts off each other, home or away.
So it’ll be tough to finish 3rd…which would still be an achievement for a pot 4 side like ourselves, who haven’t done great in Europe recently.
Bring it on 😁
Nite all

Just after I passed my driving test,17yo,King Of The Road etc,the fella across the road asked me if I fancied a motorbike.
Next on my list,Chris, but I’ve never been on one.
So he took me down the local bypass, three lanes,on his 1100 Harley then on his 850 Norton Commando, with me as pillion. Full throttle,no speed cameras then. No bloody helmets either, now I come to think of it!
Right, son. Get your provisional and I’ll train you.
Eff off,Chris. You’ll never get me back on one of them!!!!!!!
Job done,I think. taught me a lot about speed, including behind a wheel. I’m sure that’s why my hair is grey, scared the fuck outa me!
Anders
Survived that one… but as I said, if Liam looks in tonight and finds out how I ruined his jacket, I may not survive past the weekend!
ANDERS
It’s allowed to post here and on CQN. I met a lot of really good friends through it,as have many others. I’ve never bad-mouthed the site, though I have expressed disappointment in it. Which I hope is allowed,as constructive criticism. Anyone trying to stir it on here gets a sharp reminder.
Chill out and relax where you feel more at ease. If it is here, magic. If it is on CQN,where you have been for well over a decade, that too is fine. If it’s both, depending on your mood, terrific.
It won’t stop us having a beer or ten next time I’m home-as we did a year ago this weekend,as an example.
BMCUWP…your hair’s grey because yer body is letting you down…not sum bike ride years ago lol…and aye am in the same boat…hard to admit but we’re getting auld

From the permutations available,I think we got off lightly.
Four of our six games are winnable, the ones against Real is just chasing the dream.
It’s down to Ange and the players. They don’t have the get out of jail card that other managers and players have had, that we were screwed from the start. And I suppose that is pressure in itself.
Although Shaktar will be playing their home games in Warsaw I expect they will get a big crowd with the amount of Ukranian people in Poland now. Their young number 10 Mudryk is supposed to be a bit special
Oh my…June was a year ago…aye it feels like it but not quite ;-)) It was therapeuticfor me to meet up, gratefully so 👍
Wonder if MIT can guess who I am ;-))

I think the last CL game I was at was 2017 when CalMac equalised against Bayern and had us all going mental. Which didn’t last long, but…
The last European game would have been 2019 against Cluj,we only won 2-0 but should have been 22. Best European performance since Sporting in 1985-yes it was that good!
Then the heaviest rain I’ve ever experienced right after the game, never seen anything like that.
ATHINGOFBEAUTY was stuck at the lights,I said I’ll catch the gondola and see yeez the morra. Took me longer to dry out than Ozzy Osbourne after a right good bender.
Anders
I feel like you told us before … but maybe it is my covid brain (or just old age), I cant put it together
MIKE IN TORONTO
I read your post about the bike with considerable interest because it mirrored by own experience over 50 years ago. My then future brother in law ( Leslie ) was nuts about bikes, owned 2, and was sufficiently savvy to be able to take them apart and put them together again ( as were his three closest friends ).
I was visiting my girl friend’s family during a University mid term holiday, and was dying to emulate Marlon Brando/ Gene Vincent and ride a bike wearing my new black leather jacket. Leslie and his pals were racing their bikes on a gravel path encircling a football field in Forfar, and much to his later regret, asked if I wanted a ‘shottie’ on one of his bikes. It was a Norton and I subconsciously knew it was too heavy for me.
I received some brief instruction and off I went, somewhat cautiously at first, then with increasing speed as my confidence grew. After about 4 or 5 laps, I was flying, leaning into the long curves at both ends of the park. The inevitable happened. The bike took the curve and I didn’t, as I skidded along the gravel, shredding my jacket ( lucky I was wearing one ), and my Levi’s, leaving me with black gravel in my knee and hip to this day. I heard Leslie and his pals running towards me, then past me, as he yelled “My bike! My bloody bike!” I was bruised, battered, bleeding, and with an injured knee, but was extremely fortunate to not sustain facial or head injuries, as I had no helmet.
Needless to say, the invitation was never repeated, and I have never been on a bike since. I went to the University of Michigan many years later and a classmate of mine offered me one of his two bikes to ride alongside him to Sturgis, North Dakota for the annual Harley Davidson bash. I politely declined, discretion being the better part of valour.
Mike wae your covid inflated brain am not surprised…think of the name you hated most on CQN…am not it…;-))

Snap! They’re bloody dangerous, won’t catch me near one.
Also,the Norton? Spooky…
ANDERS
Aye,we sure did.
But the last hoot-probably ever-was a year ago this weekend. SIPSINI’s lad offered you a lift home, but you politely declined, didn’t want to put him out,in favour of a bus-which damn near ran you over!
It was a right good day,that one…
I know it sounds a bit brutal but we should try to get the first game against Shakhtar. They have just restarted their league hopefully catch them cold
Inquisitive
Scary how similar that story is! I bet we are not the only young numpties who did it though!

Recently, I Came across the first CQN annual. Some great posters that have vanished …

A hoot!
My Dad and I were staying in Jury’s Inn that night, but he had arranged to meet my sisters in Irvine No 1 CSC for the hun match. Ticket only, and I didn’t have one! So I put him on the bus-free,and less distance to walk than from the train station-and went up to Alfredo’s for a couple of rolls,a few pints, watch the game.
Sorry, mate. Regulars only the day. How can I be a regular if I live in Swindon?
You know me,I can get a piece at anyone’s door.

I shouldn’t have mentioned buses, btw. Got a feeling that SOLKITTS will offer a contribution or two on that subject. Mightily glad there were no mobile phones in the 80s.
Of course,he might plead The Fifth, self incrimination. Which might be wise…
Sensory overload….not the first or last time I’ve had it…it has happened when I’m sober unfortunately ;-))

You were going through a difficult time then, due to bereavement. Apart from being a pal,we all kept a good eye on you for that reason. Let you ride the wave in good company, forget about things for maybe a few hours-but ready to catch you when it crashed.
Friends do that,we expected it. It got you out for a bit, deal with everything else tomorrow, you know?
I’ll delete this post in twenty minutes as it is personal,so not my style. I’ll delete it earlier at your request.
But,yes,it was a wonderful day. And I’ve not forgotten that it was the last time I
saw GARRY,such a smashing guy. I’ve already planned a tribute to him, based around the last day I saw him.
A year ago. Bloody hell…
I won’t,cannot,do him justice. But on Tuesday,I will try my best.
Anders,
How you doing ??
Trust you will be up for the Shipbank Shipwrecks do on Friday 2nd Sept ??

If we will be picking up a similar amount of money to Sevco for Euro participation, can anyone explain to me how that means Sevco will achieve financial parity with us?! I suppose it was a bit naive to think this wee haven for Tic fans could exist with Hunterlopers turning up!
Had a loooong read back, it’s very illuminating 👀👀
Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Friday to all who post or lurk on here.
Hopefully news of our Champions League fixtures come out today. As I understand it there’s no negotiating as to when we play or who we play. I’m sure there’s a set pattern already established for all 8 groups along the lines of Game 1 is Pot 1 team v Pot 4 team, Game 2 is Pot 4 team v Pot 2 team, etc etc. The only parts they’ll be working on at the moment is sorting out who plays Tuesday and who plays Wednesday, in negotiating with the TV companies and possibly the local police.
It’s a far shorter schedule this time due the the world cup. We start, I think, on September 6/7. The schedule is that we play on 2 consecutive midweek, then a 1 week break. Then the next 2, break for a week, then then final 2. So the 6 games are over that 8 week period.
I’m gonna need a bigger spreadsheet!!! SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM 😁
B A D
Due to factoring in the 10 year coefficient multiple we receive c €28m and the Huns c €21 from CL participation. They may also receive extra for winning both qualifiers. They have had two full houses so far, so another few million.
They won’t be far behind before a ball is kicked and points add a few more million.
They can’t have achieved parity but have significantly improved their financial position.
£25m sales of Bassey and Aribo haven’t been matched by major purchases…yet.
I expect them to spend big on another CF to edge out Fatty, and a creative mid which they badly need to replace Aribo.
There is also the question of soft loan repayment and how they tackle this.
