Auld Claes And Purritch

Morning,all.

How do I follow two excellent articles from SALTIRES EN SEVILLA and BILLY BHOY? Celebrating the “All Our Yesterday’s” in two contrasting but complementary articles?

In the only way I know-by bringing you all back down to earth!

We have already discussed how, after a fairly quiet start to the season,we suddenly face a schedule of 13 games in only six weeks. Our first two months saw us play only ten games, and I have to say that they were by and large successful. We are two points clear at the top of the table after seven league games, into the League Cup quarters, and with a fighting chance of finishing second in our CL group.

I’d mark that down as a success, albeit one heavily soured by a very poor performance in our last outing, away to St Mirren. Everyone is entitled to a poor performance now and again, but I’ve always said that if three players are way off the level required, then any team will suffer-no matter how well the other eight perform.

Simple fact is,we had quite a few more than those three that day,and bugger it,it’s gone. No point in worrying about it,learn from it and get back on the upward curve. It’s what we do,what we have always done under Ange. AP didn’t escape criticism on the day,of course, and he doesn’t strike me as the type of fella who likes to make mistakes twice.

We have three CL group matches in October, and a further one the following month in Madrid, one of the fabled stadia in Europe. Ptchaa,we play in one of them every fortnight! Santiago Bernabeu will faze us not one jot. We won’t be over there for the sightseeing, even if I don’t expect much more than a proper performance on the night.

No,our CL ambitions lie in those three matches in October. TWISTY has already broken down the permutations, but a win against Shaktar and four points against RB will see us clear.

Europe should always be our benchmark, the height of our ambition, and we are so many miles short of the likes of Real. So what? We scared them shitless at Celtic Park, and we should view the performance in our first half against them as a new benchmark. Rinse and repeat, and bring those levels to the table every game-but for the full 90 minutes plus.

Meantime,Europe is a faraway country! We have to deal with our battles on so many fronts one game at a time. Tomorrow sees us play Motherwell at Celtic Park,a league game at our own ground for the first time since we humped the huns four weeks ago. As the headline suggests,it really is auld claes and purritch time, and I apologise for those of you unfamiliar with the Ayrshire vernacular,or the Kilwinning patois!

What it means is,that for all the grandiose splendour of a European night under the floodlights, with Zadok The Priest ringing around the ground at full blast, and even while I am happy to agree that it is spinetingling and everything that supporting Celtic has always been about…

It’s the auld claes and purritch of a successful league campaign that gets us there in the first place. Everything else is gravy, whether we like it or not. Learn to walk, then learn to run. Earn the access, then learn to compete. And don’t make the same mistakes twice.

And btw,I bet the huns have been looking forward for so many years to hearing that Champions League anthem too. Just don’t ask them what it is called!

The complete centre half.

Was never going to go on to become a Celtic great though, because he would have been sold for big money.

Like most Celtic supporters,I was devastated when the injury occurred, hoping and praying that he would recover, still saddens me to this day.

Think Nesta or Cannavoro – similar calibre defender.

John Kennedy really was that good.

We will need the full squad available for this exacting schedule.
Concerns are in central defence- down to the bare bones with SW and MJ.
Who is cover for them? Before we had a utility player like NB to fill in, if required.
Any news on CCV and CS?

Chalmersbhoy – That’s the cosmopolitan area of Belfast chief.
No problems at all there – Ormeau Road, Lisburn Road,Ravenhill etcetera.
Places to avoid would be Donegal Pass, Sandy Row,or Annandale further up Ormeau.
Honestly though even those places there isn’t much hassle nowadays.
Hatfield is a nice pub, lower Ormeau – Rose & crown as well.
Errigle Inn is a good pub further up.
University area is really nice as well, lots of nice food places Ormeau are – again all neutral and normal.

Excellent summary of where we are and where we need to go Bobby. I think the next 2 matches carry huge weight. Win both and our momentum will be massive. Hopefully unstoppable. A home win and away draw will also be encouraging. Anything less will be a worry.

Bada I’ve given up trying to pick an 11. It’s giving me a sore head. Having said that your final 4:
Moravcic Johnstone Larsson Dalglish
WOW 🤩 🤩🤩

‘Nesta or Cannavaro’…built and moved differently to both, particularly the 5’9” latter. Could read the game and had intelligence in it. As you said, a player.

A thing of beauty

CFC,
You are correct, we are down to bare bones in defence. I saw Lawal Bosun in the training video yesterday but that may be part of the B team training with the first team. No sign of GG either so we’ll be relying on Kyogo on his own. As I pointed out last week we are not as well off as some think!!
I am concerned where we will we find ourselves if we have to get through October with Welsh and Jenz at the back and only Kyogo up front.

CFC

A t o b

Yip, key player(s) missing and suddenly we look stretched.
Perhaps our new Bhoy Abildgaard, can step back if needed. I’ve no idea, just speculating.
Losing GG could be as damaging.

It’s not my intention to look for negatives here, just a realistic assessment of where we are with key players potentially missing.
Hopefully a gripe about nowt.

We are loaded with midfielders but they can’t play cb or cf maybe Abbada.

St tams

I think most of recognised that when the transfer window closed, that we were still short in a ccouple areas. Namely, centre back and centre forward.
I take it , there is no one good enough from the B team to step up.

CCV,Starfelt, G Mak out tomorrow, everyone else available

Aye ..this is all true, just Relax buddy!

It’s all under control. The reason we know this is because the new super head of recruitment is fab… consequence of an extensive worldwide hunt for the best!

Explain in your own words what you mean by Fitba or trophies?
To me there is no “or”

CFC

In order to remain competitive in a sporting context Celtic embraced a corporate ethos early in its existence.
The Bro Walfrid altruistic creation was always going to face a challenge as Sporting achievement became the driver, not the founding principles. They became secondary.

Otherwise Celtic would have gone the way of Renton, etc and this discussion wouldn’t exist.

Ange talking about Celtic and their supporters on Australian TV, it’s fair to say he gets Celtic… ‘They are not traditional supporters, it (Celtic) is an extension of their family.’

CFC

I don’t identify as scum.

Founding principles were noble, and served a purpose.
Realisation was that what had been created had the potential to be a market leader in the football firmament.
Was that a wrongful judgement? 130 years plus suggests no.
The success of Celtic FC giving a largely disenfranchised/ demonised demographic a focal point and a vocal point?
A force for good surely?

What benefit is there to hark back to a period in time that has long passed?
