Dig Deep

In season One the plan was simple. Allow the new manager to impose his new style upon a rebuilt squad while accessing said squad players, and deciding areas to strengthen in this January’s transfer window, all while staying in touching distance. Next aim was to kick on during the second half of the season to silverware.
The plan came to fruition, thanks again to all involved.

Season Two has actually started pretty similar, struggling to find form. The big question is obviously will the current playing staff find their own feet or will we attempt to repeat the previous, keep it tight then rejuvenate the team with signings?
To be honest, I’m not sure it’s that simple anymore.

There are currently 27 first team players listed
https://www.transfermarkt.us/celtic-glasgow/kader/verein/371
with many players in their prime, which usually translates to earning prime also.
The wage bill must be high.

Players generally receive a pay rise upon switching clubs, the carrot, and we’ve signed from the Eredivisie and J-League, generally other top divisions.

There’s the Russian situation giving players an out which usually leads to a wage bidding war, signed two of them.
A well travelled Scottish International on a free wont be playing for pennies, and another Scottish International in James Forrest recently signed his big (keep him at the club for life) contract.
Our American rock at the back is surely in our top tier of earners.
The Captain also is always there or thereabouts.
Ditto the big English ‘keeper.

Yup, wages must be high already which is compounded by the fact we are unable to shift players we might like to move on, because their wages are high and demands can’t be met elsewhere without the player taking a personal hit. Chances are you wouldn’t move jobs for a lot less income, we can’t blame players for acting the same. If anything it shows they are human.

Now as much as I don’t particularly like our PLC, there’s one thing I would nail my hat on,,that club shall not be in financial trouble under this current lot. They will never, ever, push the boat out so far it endangers the entire operation.
I admit this reassures me.

From a board perspective they do have a right to ask will the anticipated post Christmas lift (with Captain returning) not prove enough once again?
Plus which areas need more signings?
We have three goalkeepers floating around, four central defenders (every club has four, and maybe a kid like Uroghide),
two options at each full back position, ten midfielders counting Robertson and Hacksabanovic, and six attackers. With no income from sales/moving on.
And FSR/FFP must be adhered to, there’s an actual limit on wages versus turnover let us not forget. There’s a ceiling on outgoings. No one’s fault, just the way of the world. I don’t know if we are close to that ceiling or not, but 27 players tells me there’s not far to leap in order to touch it.

However if there’s anyone who can wrangle a few bucks out of the biscuit tin, it’s Ange. Last January cost five million give or take for three J-League players who dragged us over the line.
We are used to paying almost five million per flop, he goes and finds three players for that price. Two of the three could be labelled successes, Hatate is a fantastic player and Maeda must be chalked as a success given his drive helped deliver the title and he’s performing regularly for the first team.
As Meatloaf crooned, Two outta Three ain’t bad.
Hope Guchi rams those words down his throat this Spring.

While Hacksabanovic looks a pass already, others don’t, yet. McCarthy, Abildgaard, Ideoguchi, Mooy offer very little positive, which slightly stains Ange’s signing record which is good in the main.
If he tempts some spondolicks out of this board now he’s gotta realize,,,
we are hitting the player limit therefore these signings are crucial. This might be it, the squad totally full, and everything he’s got to work with.
The final pieces of the jigsaw, and therefore there’s serious importance placed upon any January signings.

I’ve written before that the third striker conundrum is very hard to solve, no playing striker will opt for the bench, if he’s playing at a decent level. The games benefit his career, the bench doesn’t, and a decent striker will fancy himself to be signed as first choice elsewhere.
First choice? Ahead of G-Mak and Furuhashi?
He’s gotta be good, super good, and that is rarely cheap nor undiscovered.
Ditto a starting defender, full back, midfielder, or wide man.

If/when the nod is given Ange must be sure he’s got his selectee(s) correct. He needs instant hits, not misses or ones for the future.

He’s gonna have to dig deep into the contact book and spend a lot of hours in front of the laptop on this one, the board are gonna have to dig deep and allow the wage bill to grow, the current playing squad must dig deep to make sure they are there or thereabouts come New Year, while me and you must dig deep into our faith in those twenty two legs out there representing us.
Up The Hoops!

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

Morning,folks.

Stay tuned on Monday because there is a special guest article on a subject close to all our hearts. More importantly,it outlines a way to get something bloody done about it at last!

Big Audio Dynamite

Me and the wee man have been wanting Gio to start for weeks now.
Would also like to see us employ a 4-4-2 formation at times, as I think Gio and Kyogo would be devastating together.
Above anything else, just win today Celtic! As ever, I’ll take 1-0.

Hail followed by another Hail.

✅ BEEN SAYING THAT FOR AGES

BEEN ASKING US TO TRY THAT FOR EVEN LONGER. MANY SAY IT WONT WORK. IF THEY CAN WORK TOGETHER IT WOULD BE DEVASTATING. LETS GIVE IT A GO

Great leader Mahe…

For today I’d be going with Hart, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Jenz, Bernabei, O’Riley, Ideguchi, Haksabanovic, Kyogo, Giakoumakis, Forrest but whatever Ange goes with is good enough for me.

SteveNaive

Lucky white heather… trying to do the right thing in the CL whilst wearing Lplates, still have a chance of a win, still two ahead in the league despite injuries and blatant cheating from referees and linesmen, ( Celtic by Numbers) a settled manager, coaches and squad, full stadium and no own goals…help ma boab !
All is woe…referencing the ‘biscuit tin’ lazy

Big Audio Dynamite

Frodshambhoy, 👍

Guess we are all waiting to see what solution the big man employs to get our misfiring goal-getters back on track.

Still a happy passenger on the Ange train 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃

This is the day that we get a penalty! 🎶

Leggy

Morning all,

I agree with a few on here. I would start GG and Kyogo and go for it !!!!!

However, I will trust Ange and hopefully the team will respond with a great performance and a few goals into the bargain.

‘Police Scotland has launched an investigation into a video showing the Republic of Ireland women’s team taking part in pro-IRA chants’

https://www.thenational.scot/sport/23050123.police-scotland-investigate-ireland-womens-team-pro-ira-chanting-video/

No investigation into 50,000 Huns being up to their knees in Fenian blood every game though, eh ..?

It’s at times like these I realise why Mags can be such a wailing frustrated curmudgeon.

jimthetim53

Packy, time to get your NAP on mate!

The Leopard’s Rimshot

No action taken against the organised gang of masked Union Bears who were allowed to climb the stairs to attack the Liverpool support, who the cops were meant to be protecting, on Wednesday either …

So it appears that nowadays you’re allowed to organise a racist sectarian gang, with matching red white & blue balaclavas, confront the coppers, confront rival fans, attack rival fans with deadly weapons IN FRONT OF THE COPPERS then walk home Scot free no questions asked but you are NOT allowed to sing a song in the dressing room having just qualified for the World Cup …

I’d say on reflection it’s the dirty Hun scum Scottish coppers that needs investigating and jailing rather than the Irish lassies’ fitba team.

The two faced bigotry knows no bounds.

The Leopard’s Rimshot

The bastard BBC have just updated their headline from ‘Goldson out for weeks rather than months’ to ‘Goldson out for some months’.

They’re so desperate to publish good news for the Huns they’d rather put up any auld pish before even attempting to establish what the facts are, though Facts & the BBC have never been happy bedfellows, nor indeed bedfellows at all.

I’m finding it harder to decide these days if I hate the pedo Beeb, the Daily Mail or The Guardian more, for as John Pilger observed in 2012 right after the Zionist takeover, ‘The Guardian is the worst of all as it’s still pretending to be the (impartial) paper it was’, whereas at least with the (Hate) Mail we all knew it was always a fascist spunk bucket.

(That was one of Pilger’s last honest interviews btw, before he too was got at and reminded who he works for and he’s been as meek as a mouse ever since, even going along with the lies himself when not required to.)

But what am I on about, I haven’t taken the mainstream media seriously for over a decade and I’ve never owned a tv so don’t even need look at the pedo Beeb and its decades long band of Savile protectors, acolytes and students who have carried on those fine old BBC traditions that are still being swept under the rug to this day.

Jail a couple of 80 year olds and the trail needn’t ever lead into the Palace after all, what?

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

Just about to sit down and watch a manager playing a goalkeeper,of all the positions, through a crisis in confidence. 26 caps for Wales,Danny Ward can’t be ALL bad, surely?

Well,I’ve only seen highlights so far this season…

(Also looked at the squad options. Dearie me)

McCaff

Bobby…from yesterday – forgot all about the DU hatrick!!
My prediction for today – Kyogo to get his second Hatrick of the season!!

Jobo Baldie

Good afternoon, friends. Only another hour until we hear of Ange’s starting 11 for today. I’m expecting only a couple of changes from Tuesday, perhaps Ralston and Giakoumakis coming in. Not managing along today but will hopefully catch a reliable stream.

Any win today would be great, although a convincing victory would be even better.

Almost 2023 and it could just as well be 63,73,83 or 93 in the most bigoted wee place on the planet, well second most bigoted place on earth – the 6 counties always wins top spot on the scores!

Pointless attacks on our club, the diaspora or anything deemed to be Irish or Catholic are as futile & counter productive now as they were back then.

The establishment never seems to learn – that’s bigotry though – ignorant, irrational and nonsensical.

Galvanised and makes us even more determined to win is the only thing it achieves.

Laughable more than anything else now.

Yes it is true that Celtic have yet to be awarded a penalty kick this season, however neither have Kilmarnock nor Ross County therefore any hints of bias or cheating are null & void. 🤣

My bad! Hope I haven’t jinxed a red card!

Mike in Toronto

France have announced that N’Golo Kante’s hamstring injury will keep him out of the World Cup. Shame. One of the greatest midfielders ever, and, by all accounts, one of the game’s nice guys.

So, he will join Haaland on the list of top players missing from this year’s tournament. Shame for both, as their presence would make the tournament much more enjoyable.

Rebus67

Interesting team selection! “Interesting” is a word oft used when you do not know what to say!

Changing both FBs….Hmmm!

Have Hacksaw, Trees and Mousaka ever played together?

Interesting!

I looked at Hibs stats(you know me). They do not appear to offer a serious goal threat but their league position can be explained by their tight defence. They have conceded the same number of goals as Sevco.

I watched the Hibees vs DU and they should not have lost that game. They could not score for love nor money. Boyle is their goal threat, shooting from distance. Be alert Mr Hart.

They have a couple of bruisers up top Mr K and Mr C plus Portcullis threatens at set pieces. This is our main danger….so do not give the man in black chances to blow for fouls.

Celtic with goal shy forwards vs a stingy defence. Should be…..ah, interesting.

Good Afternoon Bhoys & Ghirls – Fine Day To Be A Tim…

Interesting lead Mahe,

My feelings are we are okay on the FFP/FSR compliance – of course, wages wise, both individual and collective and % of turnover is difficult to assess, as Celtic PLC keep that one close to their chest.

All sources suggest that we are well within the parameters, our total wage bill is around 70% of turnover therefore our player wage bill must be under the guidelines.

Other big Clubs have a lot of work to do in this regard, we should be fine.

In fact if we keep going the way we are going under Ange and Mr Nicholson the annual turnover should be increasing substantially therefore por-rata we should have more leeway

What I think we should do is supplement the high earners wages by European bonuses; bounus achieving the Europa group stage, higher bonus playing in the UCL group stage, bonus playing in a European clash, higher bonus playing in a winning team in a European clash – players hit the jackpot with a UCL away win.

That way the huge uplift that we get from European football can give a huge boost to the basic wages of players. Our top performers earning “average” EPL wages.

Of course in a poor season for qualification and results in Europe, the players salaries will significantly go down and the “hit” the Club takes is mitigated.

Opposite in good seasons, a good UCL campaign and the Europa after Christmas will see the players amply rewarded for success, bonuses that Celtic PLC can afford and in line with FFP/FSR as our income will be so much greater.

——————————————————————-

We know that we need to rotate the team, on that basis I’m liking today’s team selection.

Hibs are in form with some very good players, should be a cracker.

COYBIG

Hail Hail

Rebus67

Regarding the leader, I think it exaggerates the salary cost.

GG came from the bottom club in the Dutch league and would be on journeyman’s wages. The J League is renowned for only paying top salaries to foreign players. O’Riley was recruited from League 1. The two Rubin players? It was more about getting out of Russia than salary….so they would not be difficult to deal with.

In addition, in the last two years we have ditched Ajer, Edouard and Brownie and lately Julien. In addition to addition, we have the CL pot of funds.

Money is readily available.

Finding the players we need is the main issue, especially a striker.
