The Peril Of Turning A Blind Eye

Morning,all.

With the return of real fitba now on the horizon,it seems that my fervent wish for Celtic to use the last five weeks to turn the screw on the SFA over the unique application of VAR in Scotland has come to naught. Not only has nothing been done to repair the abuse of the system, but we have been told by no less a figure than the head honcho of the SFA that VAR is working exactly as intended.

Aye,you bet it is!

As usual,Celtic will tell us that they are making representations on the club’s behalf about this farcical situation. Using the usual MO,of contact behind the scenes. You know, because that has worked ever so well in the past, after all. Indeed it has. It has silenced the gullible amongst us,while the less easily fooled are left stranded in no-man’s land, branded as conspiracy nuts. Paranoid.

Yet if history has shown us anything,it is that we simply haven’t been paranoid enough. And yes, those who fail to learn from history are indeed doomed to repeat it,as the interpretation up here of VAR-a proven technology, used all over the world-proves.

VAR,as we all know, was originally introduced to eliminate “clear and obvious” errors, though its remit seems to have been somewhat redefined since then. It is now used in all penalty decisions, offsides, straight red card offences, and for every goal scored. An error no longer has to be clear and obvious, the laws of the game are to be rigorously applied.

That has led to some very close offside calls, for instance. Such as being offside by the length of a wee toe-or less! Some rather harsh penalties being awarded,as for example when a player gets to the ball marginally before a defender. The defender makes contact, and the penalty is given-even when the player has in no way had the ball under control, and has in fact simply kicked it out of play. Strict adherence to the letter of those  laws, yes. But hardly to their spirit.

So with all the replays available to the watching official on monitor detail, there can be no excuse for getting a decision wrong,is there? In fact, such a thing is almost beyond the boundaries of possibility-isn’t it? Well,it appears that all depends on your definition of getting a decision wrong! If the VAR official is looking at the replays to identify an infringement, then he has an easy job. And,on that score, they tend to get the big decisions correct.

But not all the time,as the overturning of two red cards has already shown us. And remember, these are the only on-field decisions which can be rectified after the event. Others, like erroneously chalked off goals, penalty or offside decisions stand, whether they are proven to be correct or not. Coming soon, manhandling in the box-just watch!

The referee and the VAR official are the final arbiters in these decisions, and they know they can apply VAR as and how they please. For there is no sanction available against them, while any discussion by players or managers,no matter how mild,is met by an immediate charge from the SFA of bringing the game into disrepute-the footballing equivalent of the catch-all breach of the peace, but with more severe penalties.

It is not only Celtic who have been on the receiving end of some shockers since the introduction of VAR,as we know. Every club has their own examples, even in such a short period of time. Well, all bar one-see if you can guess which? Yet,while happy to bring them to the attention of the media at the time, none are prepared to make demands of the SFA to get their house in order! And that includes us,of course.

As always,we are like lions led by pussies. And as we haven’t used the five week hiatus to get the situation resolved,we can only look to the boardroom when we point the finger of blame the next time we are on the receiving end. And the SFA have made a good start by appointing Walsh for the huns game tonight, and Clancy as VAR official at Aberdeen on Saturday. We go into these games with a nine point lead, and I would like us to maintain the pressure by getting twelve points from the four matches before the arrival of 2023.

We all would! In fact,I’ve got them on my list to Santa-and he has never let me down yet.

But while the opposition never worries me too much when we head into a match-yes,I know, anything can happen over ninety minutes-VAR does. We are a very good side, too good on most days for the opposition to get near to us. But VAR is more than just a leveller when it is abused in the way we have seen. It can be the difference between winning and losing, and we ignore the danger from this at our peril.

Which,as we have seen, the board are quite happy so to do.

When do a few VAR decisions going against us turn into a trend? These are likely to be balanced out with some going our way.
It’s not only the decision, it’s the context in which the decision is made. When matters.

I hope someone, somewhere is keeping score.

BMCUWPS,

Yes, the clarion call for Celtic to raise the issues once again ignored as we all wait for them to sort the teething problems.

Although we have enjoyed a bit of banter around The Rangers new regime an improvement is more than possible, even if they don’t strengthen, we could still see a dead cat bounce.

Winning this league is paramount, it’s also quite important for us – no doubt all the stops will be pulled out and these teething problems could come back to haunt us

Auldheid @ 8:51 am,

A number of years ago I met up with Harry Brady for him to cover the Res12 story for Celtic Underground.

I’ll never forget his closing words which were ” Celtic should do the right thing”.

It is likely PL’s failure to do the right thing since has scunnered Harry.

Well he has always struck me as that sort of person, so being manipulated in such a fashion wouldn’t feel good, the fact he wasn’t the only one will be little comfort.

Still looking for that Celtic Christmas present ?
https://agrandoldtee.com/products/club-captains-t-shirt

Good morning

I will soon be heading out to a pub meet an uncle, the last survivor of the adults who took me to the football as a child. Celtic may be discussed

Good leader- I don’t know if 5 rounds of matches is early enough to be classed as a trend but my guess is that if we continue to run away with the league decisions will start to run our way – especially in games we are already well ahead in.

I am uneasier than I thought I would be going into the resumption. We do usually win at Pittodrie – sometimes quite handsomely- but it has never quite been a banker win. We won’t have a full squad – strange to resume when the World Cup is still on- and although Beale may be another failed messiah for them I recall that when he was part of their set-up, even in games when there were crowds present and we won, they were usually the better team. We shall see .

My unease is considerably increased by what might follow next week. I don’t know if Monday is just another interim court appearance or not but this story has festered for a long time and a legal conclusion is badly needed although I suppose for the victims it is something which has no ending. Whatever the actual verdict, it will be a public relations disaster for Celtic and if that verdict goes against us, it could be caraclysmic for us.

Sorry to be so gloomy.

There is every likelihood they will have a resurgence under Beale.
Just how much will only really be obvious on Jan 2nd, when every advantage in their favour will be used against us.
We have four games before then to maintain our lead. Cannot see our manager allowing us to lose focus.

Jobo Baldie

Good morning, friends. I had a a pre-prepared post reminding everyone about the POTY thing restarting but I’ll save that for a short while. Instead, given the nature of the lead article, here’s something I started compiling during the World Cup Break. If anyone remembers anything more clearly I’ll be happy to amend. I decided to only log VAR issues directly involving games that Celtic play in. I do take the view that when decisions go against teams at Ibrox it is up to THOSE TEAMS, not Celtic to shout out about them.
So, deep breath…..

VAR ISSUES – CELTIC DOMESTIC GAMES

OCTOBER 22ND 2022 – HEARTS 3 CELTIC 4
Referee denies Hearts a 1st half penalty but this is overturned by VAR. As I think a penalty was the correct decision, I have no qualms with this one.
A ball comes into the Hearts box with Giakoumakis grappling with a Hearts defender. Referee blows for a foul just as the ball reaches Ralston and ends up in the net. Goal disallowed. My understanding is that the ref blew too quickly, should have let play progress to the goal and then VAR May have called his attention to it.
Referee denies Celtic a 1st half penalty following a handball incident and no clear evidence that VAR became involved given that play continued pretty quickly. In my opinion it was a clear penalty to Celtic
In the 2nd half Hearts get a 2nd penalty. Hart saves, Hearts score on the rebound but the goal is then disallowed by VAR for players encroaching. The penalty is retaken and Hearts score. VAR applied correctly.
Abada scores Celtic’s 5th goal but linesman flags for offside. VAR pictures were inconclusive.
 SUMMARY – CELTIC DENIED A PENALTY AND POSSIBLY 2 GOALS. OUTCOME OF THE MATCH UNAFFECTED.

OCTOBER 30TH 2022 – LIVINGSTON 0 CELTIC 3
Can’t remember any VAR issues.

NOVEMBER 5TH 2022 – CELTIC 4 DUNDEE UNITED 2
Missed by everyone in real time with no claims by any Dundee Utd players VAR intervenes, referee checks screen and awards a penalty to Dundee Utd for handball against Bernabei’s elbow. Bernabei also is given a yellow card! Dundee Utd score.
In the first half there’s a dangerous high tackle on Giakoumakis. The referee takes no action but VAR checks for a possible red but declines. Play on with no further action!
 SUMMARY – CELTIC WRONGLY PUNISHED WITH A PENALTY AND A YELLOW CARD. DUNDEE UNITED SHOULD HAVE BEEN REDUCED TO 10 MEN. OUTCOME OF THE MATCH UNAFFECTED.

NOVEMBER 9TH 2022 – MOTHERWELL 1 CELTIC 2
With Celtic leading 1-0, in the 2nd half Jota scores a wonderful goal which is then subject to a VAR check for offside. The goal is disallowed but no VAR pictures are shown until after the game and even then they were from the camera in Celtic’s defensive half! It was a close call that might have been correct but no conclusive evidence so what actual picture did VAR use to decide it was definitely offside?
There a dangerous potential leg breaking tackle on Starfelt and the referee decides that yellow is sufficient. VAR don’t upgrade to a red.
 SUMMARY – CELTIC DENIED A POSSIBLY ONSIDE GOAL. MOTHERWELL SHOULD HAVE BEEN REDUCED TO 10 MEN. OUTCOME OF THE MATCH UNAFFECTED.

NOVEMBER 12TH 2022 – CELTIC 2 ROSS COUNTY 1
With the game goalless the referee awards Ross County a penalty for handball against Matt O’Riley. Matt’s arms were tucked in and the ball bounced up and off him. VAR looks at the decision but astonishingly upholds the referee’s decision. Ross County score the penalty.
 SUMMARY – VAR SHOULD HAVE OVERTURNED THE REFEREE’S DECISION; COUNTY WOULDN’T HAVE SCORED. OUTCOME OF THE MATCH UNAFFECTED.

CFC @ 11:52 am,

Agreed, Ange will have us up for the remaing matches this season, some tricky games but there should be no banana skins

We’ll know a lot more about Mike Beale’s Rangers by the 2nd January

We haven’t done great at Ibrox since our ticket allocation was reduced, we must assume the officials, VAR and everything else will come to bear for them

By Monday evening of 2nd January we will know if we are in for a stroll to the line or a competitive league situation

Glad we have Ange on the tillier, he has rose to every challenge so far

OCTOBER 30TH 2022 – LIVINGSTON 0 CELTIC 3
With Celtic leading 2 nil, Jota crossed from the left with Livingston’s Andrew Shinnie handling the ball. Missed by Willie Collum in real time but asked to look again by the Var and penalty awarded. Giakoumakis missed the spot kick.
 SUMMARY – CELTIC BENEFIT FROM VAR AND WERE THEN AWARDED A PENALTY WHICH WE DULY MISSED!

Bawheid

As McBealin, calls out for more favours and a bit of luck, Iv’e never before read such an obvious plea for help from the Peepul.

Since the 27th. of November 2019, at the Celtic AGM, my Celtic mood music changed, you can read about it on the Celtic Star, 3rd of December, but only if you want to. – Beatrix Potter’s, Peter Rabbit, comments section. Or, “Welcome Back Peter”. David Potter.

VAR, if you think that it only effected Scottish football then you would be wrong. For it was first trialled in 2010, by the Dutch FA.
In 2016, The International Football Association Board, which oversees the laws of the game, approved trials of VAR.
“The time has come for the debate to be based on evidence and everyone agreed that we needed to see if it works and whether it benefits the game”. The testing was deemed a success. When you think about it, it began for all the right reasons, but every single football league that introduced it became alarmed by its introduction and how it affected the game, because at the end of the day it had to be operated by humans and they are certainly not infallible.

Every single league railed against it, wrong decisions mostly and the delays in getting the decision and usually getting it wrong. Games that used to take 90 minutes and then time added on for substitutes etc. and VAR added-on more extra time, now on average the games can take up to 120 minutes. One Italian manager threatened to take his team out of the league because of VAR, others just became incensed because of the humans getting it wrong, the cameras never get it wrong, right?

In the SPFL, Celtic has an obvious problem and now its doubled. All 42 Scottish clubs voted for the introduction of VAR a ta cost of
£1.2 million, with the champions paying by far the most. We have all witnessed the wrong referee controlled VAR cameras, sat in darkened rooms in the Orange Order halls in Larkhall.

Rules that we thought were right were suddenly not right, so it begs the question, do we know the correct rules of the game?
Crawford Allen said this: “Whenever VAR comes in we”ll be ‘Aye Ready’, Ha! “In terms of key decision making referees get on average 92/93% correct and its been proven that VAR takes that up to 99%. So, if Crawford says that it must be right, right?

For myself, I think that VAR was introduced for all the right reasons, but frankly its a pain in the arse and takes far too long and gives Scottish referees twice the chance to affect the game far more than they should. Here,we have a tiny pool of qualified referees, the pool should be enlarged, why do we need qualified referees to operate the VAR cameras, all you need is a knowledge of the rules to a qualified level, good eyesight and a fat arse to sit watching the cameras, count me in.

Good afternoon, friends

*PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2022-23*
*COMPETITION RE-STARTING THIS WEEKEND*

So, just 2 more Big Sleeps until we get to see The Champions play and I’m sure you know what that means – you got it, the ole Player Of The Year Poll is back. And even if you’ve never participated before why not consider making your opinions known for the 2nd half of the season.
If anyone wants a full explanation of how everything works just email me at the address below and I’ll happily provide the detail. But the main points to remember are as follows –
1. Importantly, its open to all and everyone to join in whenever they can. No need to register, sign up or pay fees as it’s just a bit of fun. No need to vote after EVERY game but just the ones you witness. And you don’t need to be in from the start – join in any time so spread the word around!
2. All each person does is watch the game, decide which 3 players in your opinion performed best on any given day and then stick the 3 names in an email to me at SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM .
3. You don’t have to put your 3 nominations in order and neither do you have to explain your reasoning behind your picks. Whilst I’m always happy to read every email I don’t always have time to reply to everyone so those detailed thoughts might be better put onto the blog? Especially those lurkers who regularly join in on the voting 😉
4. I then add up the votes cast and issue the results for that game, usually between 10.00pm and 10.30pm on the evening following the game. These will be posted on Sentinel Celts and CQN but, again, I’ve no problem if they are then copied elsewhere.
5. For each game, the Man Of The Match (as voted by you, readers!) wins 5 points. Next best gets 4, next gets 3 etc. These points accumulate on a game by game basis to eventually determine our Player Of The Year.
6. Finally, please remember that absolutely anyone is welcome to join in, whether you post on here, post elsewhere, lurk, or even just know someone who posts or lurks. So, I’m happy for you to encourage friends, family etc to have their opinions counted too.
I look forward to a mountain of emails flooding in on Saturday and Sunday. The more I get the less time I have for drinking so you’re doing me a real service here!
Thanks for reading this far.

You’re welcome.

Danny – I hope this doesn’t sound mean spirited but I’m happy for whomever wins, assuming their free bet returns profit, for the winners to collect the money and do as they wish with it. Perhaps make a little donation to a charity of their choice if that’s what they want to do.
I think a lot of folks feel obliged to tell me to give it to charity, but I’m honestly happy to send the winnings to the successful people and leave it to them to do as they wish.

I’m hoping at the end of the naps competition, everyone who entered will make a small donation ( £5?) to a charity of their choosing.

This isn’t a “ charity begins at home” spiel, simply reinforcing that I’m more than delighted for the winners to accept the prize and do their own thing. If that means a night out in the pub , or a nice meal, great.

( I’m sure if someone wins £1k with their free bet they’ll be sure to make a donation to a deserving cause 😊
