We Never Stop

Morning,all.

Tomorrow sees us host Morton in The Scottish Cup,the only domestic arrow still missing from AP’s quiver, with the very strange kick off time of 1215pm. And since, for a change,it is live on BBC One Scotland,we don’t have to go chasing around Timternet to find some way of accessing it,either! I wonder which EBT recipients MacAuntie will wheel out for our delight on the day, analysing every possible “error in our favour.”

As usual, the SFA can’t run a piss-up in a brewery, and VAR is only in use for selected games during the tournament. Including Darvel Juniors v Aberdeen on Monday night, which might be interesting. To date,Darvel is only known to me as being on the A71,a shortcut home from the M74,and my first comfort stop. (Central Bar on the RHS,IIRC). Monday might see the biggest giant-killing since 1967,so I’ll be watching that!

Sadly,I also saw a certain bit of giant-killing myself about ten years ago when Celtic played Morton in the League Cup. I couldn’t believe my eyes that night, nor could the ten thousand or so hardy souls forced to endure two hours plus of it. But it should serve as a reminder of what can happen in cup competitions, those one-off games where so called diddy teams have their own chance to be kings for a day. Indeed, down south saw a few major shocks only earlier this month, with third-tier sides like Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool knocking out Newcastle and Forest,QPR losing to Broonie’s Fleetwood, former winners Coventry humbled at home by non-league Wrexham, and Villa toppled by fourth tier Stevenage.

Sadly,I didn’t have a penny on the accumulator, but we have been warned that strange things can happen. Let’s hope they happen elsewhere, like maybe Perth?

Wednesday saw us playing some delightful football, with some of our players who have been a bit below their best this season showing some signs of a return to form. Jota especially came on to a game after a slowish start, and Abada looked more focused than perhaps he has of late. I thought too that Matt had a better night than he has had for a while,if still some way short of his best, and Yuki Kobayashi settled into a promising debut. We need a nickname for him and soon. Yuki autocorrected to Yoko, can’t have that!!!

I suspect these players will keep their place tomorrow in order to continue their form, with Bernabei coming back at left back. I think AP might consider resting Reo for the day-I think he would welcome it,if I’m honest-and slot DT in there for some game time. Another player who might also welcome a rest is Kyogo-but how do you drop a player who is in top form? It might be that Ange will do that anyway, but only if G-mak has recovered. We shall see. He’s the boss, and I certainly trust his judgement.

There’s still a lot to play for this season. We are in the final of the League Cup,ahead in the league, and about to embark on our quest for The Scottish Cup. Nobody wants to see players playing more games than they are capable of and risking a burn-out or injury, but neither do we want to appear to be taking opponents lightly by resting players and playing “the reserves.” Because it’s worth remembering that we don’t have those reserves,we have a squad. And each one is there because he has been judged fit enough and talented enough to pull on the jersey.

They are all first team players, but there are only eleven places available at any given time. Rotating the team isn’t an insult to the opposition,it is good squad management. I think we shall see a continuation of that policy tomorrow. We. Never. Stop.

As it stands from JOBO last night…

Jobo Baldie
*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2022-23*
RESULTS FROM GAME #31 – CELTIC 4 ST MIRREN 0 (ABADA, KYOGO(2), TURNBULL)

Good evening, friends.
Celtic, and Kyogo in particular, came flying out of the blocks last night with a chance and a penalty claim in the first couple of minutes. But we were then hemmed in for a short spell as St Mirren enjoyed a fair bit of activity in our box, managing to score a goal that was rightly disallowed for offside. Despite that VAR check and also the obligatory one after our 2nd goal the referee decided to add on a whole 1 minute at the end of the first half. It’s that blatant cheating that gets me more than anything!
Anyway, 4 good goals scored with none conceded meant that we stretched our lead at the top by a further 3 goals.
Domestically we have now played 25, winning 23, drawing 1 and losing just 1. We have scored 79 and conceded 17.
As for the voting, my thanks to the 68 who emailed me with their 3 nominations. The total votes cast for each player with my own choices asterisked are as follows –
Hart: 12
Johnston: 12
Starfelt: 9
Kobayashi*: 19
Juranovic: 6
McGregor: 16
Hatate: 38
O’Riley: 0
Abada: 9
Kyogo*: 63
Jota*: 19

Forrest: 0
Turnbull: 0
Mooy: 1
Maeda: 0
Haksabanovic: 0

And so the players receiving POINTS for the game against St Mirren are –
Kyogo – 5 pts
Hatate – 4 pts
Jota and Kobayashi – 3 pts each
McGregor – 1 pt

And after 31 games the overall standings are as shown below –
69 points – Hatate
47 points – Carter-Vickers
38 points – Taylor
37 points – Jota
29 points – McGregor
28 points – Mooy and O’Riley
25 points – Kyogo
23 points – Abada
22 points – Jenz
18 points – Maeda
15 points – Haksabanovic
13 points – Giakoumakis, Juranovic and Starfelt
10 points – Ralston
9 points – Bernabei and Welsh
8 points – Forrest
7 points – Hart
6 points – Johnston
5 points – Turnbull
3 points – Kobayashi
0 points – Abildgaard, McCarthy, Siegrist and Vata

Our thoughts now turn to our first game in this season’s Scottish Cup with a home tie on Saturday against Morton. It’s a 12.15 kick off and is being shown live on the BBC.
Hail Hail!

Except in Europe of course.
Where. We. Get. Fucked.

I was thinking
Huns are like manslaughter
Sounds worse than murder but not really

Ange has 23/24 to chose from, any combination will be good enough to beat Morton.
Complacency won’t feature because I believe our manager and squad are too professional to treat any opponents as unworthy of respect.

J B

More concerning than Matt ( who I thought played a lot better than he has for weeks) getting zero points is who are the 5 who didn’t pick Kyogo in their top 3?

emusanorpan

Thanks for posting, an excellent wee documentary on Kyogo.
Only criticism is why didn’t they show his connection with the support in celebrations at the end of matches?
That encapsulates everything about the genuine relationship he’s generated in his time here.

CFC

An observation-
Re your stats, I think we have conceded 18 in both competitions- 17 in league and 1 v RC in the league cup.

It is not so long ago that one social media outlet was asking questions about Kyogo as first team striker.

We are a fickle lot.

Patience?

” I’ve nae time for that shite” 🙂

Leggy

Morning all,

Anything happening today ???

Big Audio Dynamite

CFC, Kyogo seems happy both on and off the park.
He may not win POTY, but he will definitely win dancer of the year. 🙆

Prestonpans bhoys

Talking about Darvel, interesting comment this morning:

Darvel boss Mick Kennedy claims the SFA are hatching a plot to enter Celtic and Rangers B team into an SPFL 3.

CFC

B A D

He certainly does. The fact he’s got some fellow countrymen around must be great for morale.
Long May he treat us to his skills.

As for the dancing it’s more like a balanced pogo than strictly 😀

CFC

Auldheid

He went through a fallow period as his relatively lowly position on Jobo’s poty indicates – but form is temporary.

He shouldn’t lose too much sleep over it as the SFA could not organize a piss up in a brewery.

I think the video was made last season, but it seems to be a three-parter. Maybe his dancing feet will make an appearance then.

As for 23/24,I’m hoping we are going for a treble by then-and to be more streetwise and competitive in Europe. But yes,I think Ange does have that number of players who could easily be in the side. The downside to that being that some players ain’t gonna be too chuffed at not playing.

For instance, would Ralston be too pleased if he is fit again but misses out on a perfect chance to get a game under his belt tomorrow? To their credit, the players generally seem quite happy with things as they are, but…?

Jobo Baldie

Good morning friends and a Big Happy Friday to all who post or lurk on here.
CFC – thanks for the correction on goals conceded. I’ll correct that going forward.
Hoping that I can make it along to Leggy’s All Inclusive this afternoon for a wee while. Not sure I’ve met many of his ‘regulars’ in person so itd be good to put faces to names 😁

Correct and a simpler solution is to reinstate the reserve league which was given the bullet as the huns had no cash 😏

Exactly. Patience though was not infinite. With patience MoR will get his form back.

Re our European aspirations, our achievements will largely rest on the players currently in the squad- with little turnover expected before another tilt at CL.
I expect another striker if/ when GG goes. In fact I’d contend we need a third.

Can’t see much change/spend in defence or midfield.
One area where Ange may commit is goalkeeper- love Joe but next season maybe one too far.

St tams

I would tomorrow would be an opportunity to include a couple of academy players in the squad.
Namely, Vata and Lawall.
These guys need to see that there us a pathway for them, or they will be off soon.

CFC

St tams

Wouldn’t their development be advanced by going out on loan? Proper game time.
Wonder if Broony has space for a couple?

SteveNaive

David Crosby RIP.

St tams

CFC.
Yes they certainly would.
As they’re not going develop in B league

CFC

St tams

Lower English league to make or break them- like Calmac, and O’Riley too.

Big Audio Dynamite

CFC,

Haha, true. He should treat us to some shuffling ..northern soul style!
As long as we are all dancing when we reach the end of the season 🏆🏆🏆

CFC

I’ll second that emotion 🎼

Cho deal still a possibility, seems Ange had video call with him,and trying to get deal done

Big Audio Dynamite

If Ange has spoken to Cho on the phone, he will be away to pack his bags.

Possibly a deferred transfer in the summer. Buy and loan back?

bada bing1

Celtic target Oh Hyeon-gyu has revealed he asked to complete his military service as early as possible.

Seems this is close as well..

Regarding youngsters going on loan?
Would it be more productive to keep them in B side so they can learn Ange’s system?
Robertson did pretty well on loan but never got a chance with Ange.
Toughening up is a lot easier than integration into a different system.
Even great players struggle when they can’t get to grips in new club systems.
Ziyech looked good in World cup, lost at Chelsea yet he was a star at Ajax.

CFC

fan

I guess that’s the dilemma- a guarantee of playing time at a decent level versus integration into the system.
Matt came straight into the team from MK Dons, The Japanese lads integrated easy enough, Mooy too – the right player with the right capabilities fits the system.

McCaff

Afternoon all…agreed Fan! At the moment the system is everything for Celtic. Building a sustainable structure with an identity seems to me to be an astute way of moving the whole Club forward. Give Ange the means to do this and I’m sure he is able to put the foundations in place.
We have lost players to the EPL and the Bundesliga, this can be attributed to two things – opportunity and cash. Ben Doak came on for Liverpool the other night, his 5th appearance for them. He didn’t stand out or make a massive difference to the game but neither did he look out of place. He looked lively, strong, willing and confident. It was only last March he signed and made his debut in November as the youngest Scot ever to play in the Premiership…he could still be a Celtic player if we had the structure in place to afford these boys opportunities.
I read this morning there is talk of Celtic entering the B team in the SPFL2. Is this an improvement on the Lowland League? Will our players benefit from playing Dumbarton, sitting clear at the top of Cinch 2 having won only 12 of 19 games or Stirling Albion having won 11 of 18?
I’m stuck in the past to be honest and think a Reserve League is the answer, where regular games involving seasoned pros and callow youths can make young boys first team ready.

McCaff

Two Wiki pages which might be of interest as to how Bayern scout and teach and then prepare youth players for the First Team. Liam Morrison signed for Bayern from Celtic in August ’19 as Celtic had NOT offered him a Professional contract. At 19 years old he is in the Bayern II squad, the prep team for the First Team, having played 11 times, scoring once.
Note the similarities with the structure of the leagues/Youth/2nd teams where the 2 nd team play in a lower league and no chance of promotion – same as here. Note also the coaching structure where players are coached to play in a 4-3-3 formation but are coached individually in only 1 or 2 positions from an early age. Structures and systems are everything but for them to be successful there has to be not only a financial commitment but also an understanding that success from the system is not immediate, it will take patience and time.

I think Iwata starts tomorrow. I noted Seigrist didn’t make the bench midweek, found that strange.

Happy day of Frig y’all.

So Steve Bruce sold Oliver Tebielly then bought him back. I always knew Bruce was a shit manager. That confirms it.

Actually,he wasn’t too bad,as long as he didn’t have time to think. Problem is,he thought he was Baresi. Can’t believe we were stuck with him for so long.
