The Chalice awaits!

The Viaplay Cup, the Petrofac Cup, the Cinch Premiership, the Betfred etc etc,,,I’m not a fan at all of these strange names but I grudgingly understand the tendency. But I’ll refer to it as the League Cup thanks.
Even worse, the trophy rarely tends to be an actual cup these days, jeezo even the grandest Cup of all, The World Cup was simply the globe on a stand for a while. Sometimes it feels like there’s more playing with words than play on the park, but a final is upon us as well you all know.

It’s apparent everywhere this clash is highly anticipated, team sheets and tactics, both sides strengths and weaknesses, the supporters analysis has arrived extra early and with much more vigor.
The beauty of this, to me anyway, is that everybody has their own little personal reason for truly looking forward to and savouring the occasion.

There’s no right or wrong answer here, it’s each to their own, but upon reflection the mixed crowd is one of my personal highlights.
I admit I listen to the football at high volume, the lower levels of the sound bar are perfect for picking up crowd noise, one aspect of the game that I truly appreciate.

For this expat the ohs and ahs really helps me fully engage and become nostalgic, sometimes the crowd is raises the crescendo whilst attacking, sometimes they drip venom when the players or managers clash, occasionally you hear too much, occasionally the mics dull down the crowd noise as happened for those watching the fantastic World Cup final via ITV.

Stating the obvious but fully sharing a stadium with the oppositions support rarely happens. There’s no moment of silence or crowd groans to be heard should your team concede instead you’re greeted with a vast roar which is half aimed at the team and half at you, each support attempts to outsing each other, while every attack is rip roaringly encouraged which could be down to the copious amounts of alcohol or not.
And when all’s said and down, half the stadium will be vocally urged to go home and all inside or outside shall wince at that final massive hoorah when the victorious Captain lifts that trophy high.

Finals are an audio delight but also a visual spectacle due to the crowd(s). The Parkhead faithful, used to their sea of green, shall be confronted with equal numbers of the opposing teams preferred colours, but unlike a sea of red for Aberdeen for instance this opposing sea of colours represent something much deeper.
Old Franky made a song about two tribes going to war, it’s certainly felt like that in the past (the Ally Lenny confrontation for instance) however with no imminent mass physical battle due to police presence (I hope) both sets of supporters will tend to fly those flags higher and rub their identity in others noses as much as humanly possible.
So the ‘special occasion’ banner gets dusted off, the one-off Tifos get ordered, the flags fly extra high and with extra gusto for both sides.
A true final should be a sight to behold. I hope it proves so this Weekend.

Speaking of sights to behold perhaps you love the fact you can witness history being made,,or the swelling of the trophy cabinet which is the true benchmark of a successful football club,,or maybe even the intense buildup?
I’ve given you one good reason for my excitement, a different than usual crowd and all that entails, so what about finals do you particularly enjoy?

“different than usual crowd ”

Correct , a significant amount of our crowd will have tickets who never ever go to the bread and butter games, they are called corporate………

CFC

In the build up to Final Day the anticipation, the excitement( even at this grand age! It never dims!) and the expectation of victory.
On the day, the eventual realisation your team prevails and an appreciation of the unconfined joy of celebration.

I didn’t really fully appreciate my first Cup Final/ ‘69 v St Johnstone.
But I certainly experienced the trough of despair
two years later in ‘71. Totally unexpected disappointment to this twelve year old.

big packy

must admit been at quite a few cup finals with celtic, and quite a few against thems, walking up the terracing at hampden and seeing their end full, and with a feckin roof over it🤩 that feeling in your stomach you never ever forget it, no score predictions from me im superstitious🤩 aff oot dugwalking.H.H

I went to six successive lc finals in the 70s,we lost the lot. My seventh was in 83,and nearly made up for the accumulated disappointment. From the end of the 60s till the end of the 90s,it wasn’t our lucky charm.

Just checked- we were in 14! consecutive league cup finals from ‘65.
Only won 6.
A bogey bauble.

“ walking up the terracing at hampden and seeing their end full”

Always pissed me off that their end was covered while ours wasn’t. Even at Celtic Park, the covered bit of The Celtic End was barely a canopy.

CFC

Won 5 out of first 6.
Then 1 out of 8!

Jobo Baldie

Good morning, friends.
Thanks for today’s article, Mahe. I agree that Cup Finals are special. So much so that over the past 50 years I’ve pretty much watched every domestic final, yes even the ones where Celtic weren’t playing. When it was Sevco/Rangers against a.n.other then, not surprisingly I became a 120 minute supporter of the other team. Aberdeen and Hibs spring to mind as providing some happy memories. But even finals like Dundee Utd v Motherwell or suchlike were always occasions that I went out of my way to watch.
So in answer to your question “what is it about finals that we enjoy” then, for me, it’s simply that it IS a final. And at the moment, with 4 Big Sleeps to go, the excitement is already building in the expectation that we really are going to pile on the agony and put on the style!

That got me thinking-my numbers don’t work out! So I checked too. Happy to report that I did see us win once in the 70s,and how could I forget it?!!!

6-3

Dixie scored a hat trick, his second in successive weeks against Hibs. While Harper was credited with a hat trick too, though I still think one was in off Billy McNeil as he slid in to clear.

Jobo Baldie

Oh and welcome to Lent y’all. Remember that the next y weeks doesn’t have to be about giving something up. Instead, try to do something extra. Me? Inspired by Ange during yesterday’s press conference I’m going to try to start each day with the thought “what can I do today to make this the best possible day both for me and those I meet” and to cherish every day, every hour, every minute as one day it’ll all be gone.
Right, the ole 10.00am Ashes are calling……. 😉

BMCUW

Didn’t want to be seen as pedantic pointing that out😀

A win’s a win.
To lose 7 out of 8! Jeez.

St tams

My first league Cup final was , in 69 , when wee Bertie scored the only goal.
Wasn’t allowed to go to the following year’s as it was them.
Back in again in 71, and brought right down to earth with a 4-1 defeat against the jags.
Always get excited when go to a cup final , even at 62.
But really hate playing them anytime. So can’t wait fir the final whistle, when I’m there.

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

ST TAMS

The Thistle game was the first game I ever saw us lose! Bobby Lawrie, one of the scorers, was a Kilwinning lad. Had a few beers with him in the late 90s,decent fella but quite rightly very proud of that day.

As he gently reminded me on occasion.

Big Roughie was in goals
I delivered his paper at the time.
He still lived with his parents who stayed in the Lincoln flats in Knightswood

Roughie was expected to play in our first O** F*** game after the centenary season. Billy played Ian Andrews instead, and that was the start of the spiral.

Sometimes you read a headline, and then the article it relates to,and wonder how on earth the reporter arrived at the interpretation that he did. Especially when you read the quotes that he used to do so. No surprise then that it is another DR attempt at booting the boot in to Celtic.

Ah good old DR logic there, if a club holds out for a fee and not a loan deal which results in delayed permit issues, then that selling club is to blame.

The logic of a hun……..

Bobby I refuse to give the DR any clicks. I’m sure I’ve seen others on here say the same with the suggestion that the item could be copied and pasted on here.
Having said that I’m not to bothered about seeing the article. I get what you are saying about it.

CFC

Are there not two separate individuals involved- the reporter and the sub editor who “created” the headline?
Used to be the case, in the failing print media it may no longer be so.
Anyway, as Pb says Hun logic … twisted to besmirch Celtic at every turn.

big packy

got to be honest im feckin nervous about the game on sunday, not because of the team, we are miles better than them, no because of the officials, they know we cant be caught in the league, rainjurs only chance of a trophy is in the cup’s, they will go all out to make sure they get any decisions, also id like to hear your thoughts on this, by the way will beale tell them to focus on the japanese players kyogo maeda and hatate with strong arm tactics, knowing the officials will turn a blind eye, I hope to god im wrong and we win 7-1 ,now where did i hear that scoreline before,👍

Whenever have the Huns, in both their existences, ever been anything other than strong arm and agricultural? Every decade I’ve seen them it hasn’t changed.
It’s in their DNA.

We set up with our best 11/16 and perform better than we did on Jan 2nd, then we win.

The Huns have been on the same winning streak as us since then but almost every game has had game changing decisions in their favour.
We are a much better, more convincing team.

How far the officials are prepared to go to cheat is the great imponderable.

big packy

CFC thats it, how far will they go👍

Weet weet weet

ask

What is Celtic FC biggest win?

Club Records
• Record victory: 11-0, against Dundee in 1895.
• Record victory against Rangers (now dead): 7-1 in the Scottish League Cup Final 1957.
• Record victory (Cup final): Celtic 7-1 Rangers, Scottish League Cup Final 1957; still British record for the highest score in a domestic cup final.

It’s sad and pathetic that we have to factor this element into the sport we love.
Just shows how polluting their malign influence is.
Outsiders just don’t get it.

If we get beaten fairly then we accept that and try harder next time.

When we went 5-0 after less than an hour a few years ago,all of us in the pub wanted to really rub their noses in it,score as many as possible. By then, they were totally demoralised. To this day,I have no idea why we went to a full stop. A wasted opportunity.

Having said, that, after about 80 minutes, most of us were happy enough with what we had, another one simply wasn’t enough any more.

And besides, turns out most of us had 5-0 correct score that day!

remember one game probably late sixties early seventies was behind the dugouts, billy mcneil and john greig had just shook hands in the centre circle, big tiny wharton then shook hands with big billy for a second😎 then held john greigs hand for about ten minutes😎 lo and behold years later, a photograph appears from that day showing big tiny giving greig THE handshake,,another true story.hh

I had a strong interest in watching the Anfield game yesterday, to see how the vastly experienced Liverpool team fared compared to our performance against the Galacticos. If you discount the two ridiculous penalties awarded against us by the French lady in Madrid, we lost 6-1 if you aggregate the home and away scores, so a 5 goal deficit. No one can tell yet, but that deficit is conceivable for Liverpool after the away leg.
I am now watching Leipzig – Man City with the same interest. We were particularly naive in both games against the Bundesliga team last season, so I am curious to see how they fare against the EPL Champions. The latter are dominating possession so far.
