Yes,The Basterts Are Out To Get Us. As Always
Morning,all.
Just as we are heading into an international break with all in the garden looking rosy,I suppose it has to fall to the media to do their best to bring Celtic back to the pack a bit. I suppose you can’t blame them for that-let’s face it,their overhyped and overpaid heroes have been found wanting so far. Trying to “boost” the huns has just been a waste of newsprint,it lasts as long as it takes for the next disappointment to slap them in the face.
So you can just about imagine the scenario when the hacks get together. Maybe that will be in their usual dingy wee bars after a press conference with their latest messiah, maybe it will be at a weekly editorial brainstormer. If you can in fact imagine the latter, more of a gentle breeze than a storm!
“So how do we f..k these fenians, they’re running away with everything?
Two of their latest tactics seem to consist of one from the bottom drawer of old-school dirty tricks, while the other is actually perfectly feasible. And it is the latter which should concern us most.
But to deal with them in order, the first one is simply to undermine our players, unsettle them with stories real or imagined. It is certainly true that three of the contenders for Player of the Year have been overlooked by their international managers for the upcoming matches. These things happen at times-look how often The Lisbon Lions were overlooked by Scotland, for instance. But the SMSM weren’t content with just the story, they wanted the story behind it all.
So they asked the Japanese team manager why he has left Kyogo and Reo out of the squad. He apparently replied that they weren’t playing in a strong enough league to be considered. Cue the smelling salts, the shock as the hacks knew they had their story! No consideration given to the fact that Maeda has been selected, just as he was for the Japanese World Cup squad. That would be too inconvenient, and would only muddy the waters.
Then they threw in the omission of CCV from the US national team, making sure that they mentioned that he has not been picked despite also featuring in Qatar. Oh no,this is all down to the poor quality of our league, that the players should be considering their future if they want to have one at international level. That players considering joining us would do well to reconsider for those same reasons.
No thought given to any reputational damage to the game as a result, only the possibility that their brainwave might harm us. Geniuses. These turkeys would vote for Christmas if they thought it was Celtic who were gonna get stuffed. I think they are onto plums with this tactic, and I’m sure it will blow over.
We know how modern footballing contracts work,we know that if a player wants to leave then he most probably will be allowed to. We know that if an acceptable offer comes in,it will be considered. There’s a pecking order in the game, and we aren’t as high in it as we once were. That’s life. But plums it is,because for starters Kyogo and Reo don’t yet have good enough English to read the papers, and CCV is at the stage where a bit of stability is a welcome change. So the papers can keep trying on this one,but I think they’re wasting their time.
The second front that they have broached is one that has been mentioned here two or three times already. That is the current five substitutes concept. The sharper tools amongst the hacks have noticed how,of all the sides in Scotland,it is Celtic who are benefiting most from it. This is simply because we have a squad of higher quality than the rest,so the choices available to Ange are more varied, and more likely to add to the performance on a given day than to detract from it.
Five fresh sets of legs after 60-70 minutes is easy enough to do if you have enough players available. Bringing on five quality sets of fresh legs is only possible if you have enough quality players available. As we have seen often enough, that is a luxury only afforded to Ange in our league. The other teams can bring on five runners-and that’s about it.
Well, cue the toys getting thrown out of the pram. All of a sudden, this is bad for the game up here, despite its introduction being praised everywhere else in the game. It cuts down on injuries,it keeps players fresh. More to the point,it keeps players happy, even the players who aren’t getting a regular start. They know they have a part to play, and that they are valued for that part. But because it is benefitting Celtic most of all, they want it stopped.
But how? It’s a FIFA/UEFA directive,is it not? It’s part of the laws of the game, how can we simply ignore it in Scotland? Well, here’s the clever thinking on their part. It ISN’T part of the laws of the game,it is a discretionary directive introduced as a result of the pandemic. The laws still state that up to three substitutes may be used, with a fourth available during extra-time. The directive is purely discretionary and it is left to the local governing body to decide whether to implement it or not.
I suspect that the SFA wouldn’t even have to put it to a vote of the member clubs, that they can decide whatever they like without input from the clubs. But if some quiet pressure was applied,a phone call here or a handshake there,I reckon they would be accommodating.
Now,even with only the previous three subs available,Celtic still have significantly the best players available to call on. But it will greatly reduce our advantage, and undermine Ange’s game plan. Life would be much easier were FIFA/UEFA to adopt the five as a mandatory change to the existing law,but I think that is out of their hands.
Celtic need to resist this from the start. We can ignore the attacks on the players and international squads, but this one is different if it is acted upon. Time for the board to earn their money here.

Auldheid,
My advice is don’t get your hopes up.
It is good that the SFSA has taken this on but why is it not a government initiative as in England?
The report may be the best thing since sliced bread but why is it left to a volunteer organisation in Scotland when a full study was commissioned in the South? Actually, I prefer unsliced bread. Using this process moves the recommendations further away from the legislative process which is needed for implementation. Big G should have hired SFSA to conduct the study. Did they?
Being involved should not be enough but there should be a very good chance of making a difference. Let’s us hope that this effort does not follow the same fate as Henry’s previous teview.

Since RFC PLC cost UK tax payer around £100m, the appetite to protect them is not the same as it was and thanks to exposure since 2013 of what was criminal activity on their part that nearly destroyed Scottish football and has corrupted it further since (not to mention ATOBs view that those responsible for the betterment of Scottish football are a bunch of fannies (I think I got your drift ATOB so please excuse my paraphrasing) the case for the SG doing nothing is no longer tenable when the UK Government is acting.
The SFSA launch of their review will take place in Holyrood in April and the job thereafter will be to lobby those MSPs who are not already on board as well as supporters across Scottish football, to support the case for introducing changes that will address years of misgovernance.
That is where informed Celtic supporters can add their weight for the chances are the bluenoses will oppose having to act responsibly. Celtic supporters have a lot less to fear from this development than the supporters of our rivals across the city.
I’m old enough to know it is a challenge, the biggest one being to overcome apathy, cynicism, mistrust based on unawareness of what is underway.
You once said fairly recently that reform of SFA was something that needed to go beyond Celtic. I realised that around 5 years ago when it became abundantly clear Celtic were not interested in using Res12 for SFA reform and met Paul Goodwin at a time when the SFSA profile was low and helped raised it on social media via blogs. They were the only show in town who could bring the width needed to get attention.
It has taken a while for them to grow as an organisation and try to make things happen. The only changes that have ever happened with SFA have come from the outside and the developments in England follow that pattern.
I appreciate your concern but there is a lot going on to bring about reform one way or another.
You are correct, Bobby. The five subs rule can be changed by the SFA, and probably will. Most clubs will be in favour on cost grounds. I cannot see them not reducing the no of subs allowed.
The fact that it will reduce Celtic’s competitive edge will be a bonus for all other premiership clubs.
If the matter is put to a vote of the clubs, they WILL decide to limit the no of subs to three, and there ain’t a thing Celtic can do to stop it.

Sadly the undermining of the league and its impact on international recognition won’t be missed by Jota, Matt, Liel etc and prospective new recruits.
The answer, of course, is to point to Euro success- currently direct CL participation as long as we win the League and hopefully drop down into Europa after Christmas.
I’m looking at incremental progress for next season with realistic expectations.
The season after is a much different proposition.
And will provide a higher profile in the new format.
Like it or not Euro success achieved serious money for the Huns in competition terms and onward sales of Bassey and Aribo.
That is our focus. Get the bread n butter stuff out the way. Celtic geared towards Europe will take care of our domestic aspirations.
A side note for the likes of Jota, Matt, Liel to consider- apart from the welcome bank balance boost – where are our recent departures labouring?
KA and RC hardly feature, OE gets occasional game time but is mostly used as a sub and even the undoubtedly talented KT is languishing as a third pick. Playing time for all reduced considerably with the consequence of being ignored internationally- unless you play for a diddy team like Scotland.
The grass ain’t as green in furthering one’s successful professional careers as it is in accumulating greenbacks.
I really don’t think the SFA would take much persuading regards scrapping the 5 sub rule .
All it would take is ,it will hinder celtic .job done
Every single positive thing Ange has brought to the game here to enhance it as a spectacle has been fought against .
Quick throw ins ..ball boys removed ,players kicking the ball away . The ref does nothing .
Shorr corners ..opposition players constantly encroach, the MIBs do nothing
Quick free kicks ..players stand in way or kick the ball away ..ref does nothing .
The high press .. opposition just fall over ,ref helps with a free kick .
VAR checks for us seem to take an age .. opposition get the breather they need. Is that one of the reasons it was rushed in before the WC .
The semi final dates .
One team likes to play football on the deck on a good pitch the other hoods the ball forward and into the box . A no brainer for the SFA .
All the things Ange brought to our game are within the rules and should be backed up by the officials .
NOT ONE HAS .
TUESDAY 17TH
St Patrick’s Day today and, as usual, nothing noticeable. I was at Mass, my hair cut shorter and much better also. I didn’t know the priest who said Mass.
The orderlies were giving out food to all who were returning from Mass. They tried to give me a plate of food. It was put in front of my face but I continued on my way as though nobody was there.
I got a couple of papers today, and as a kind of change the Irish News was there. I’m getting any news from the boys anyway.
I saw one of the doctors this morning, an ill-mannered sort. It tries me. My weight was 57.70 kgs. I had no complaints.
An official was in with me and gave me some lip. He said, ‘I see you’re reading a short book. It’s a good thing it isn’t a long one for you won’t finish it.’
That’s the sort of people they are. Curse them! I don’t care. It’s been a long day.
I was thinking today about the hunger-strike. People say a lot about the body, but don’t trust it. I consider that there is a kind of fight indeed. Firstly the body doesn’t accept the lack of food, and it suffers from the temptation of food, and from other aspects which gnaw at it perpetually.
The body fights back sure enough, but at the end of the day everything returns to the primary consideration, that is, the mind. The mind is the most important.
But then where does this proper mentality stem from? Perhaps from one’s desire for freedom. It isn’t certain that that’s where it comes from.
If they aren’t able to destroy the desire for freedom, they won’t break you. They won’t break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show.
It is then we’ll see the rising of the moon.
Volunteer Bobby Sands PIRA recorded his diary for the first seventeen days of his hunger strike in which he detailed his thoughts and feelings on the momentous task that lay ahead of him. During those first seventeen days, Bobby lost a total of sixteen pounds weight and on Monday, March 23rd, he was moved to the prison hospital. Bobby died there on May 5th after 65 days on hunger strike. During this period he was elected as MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone
”I remain what I am, a political POW, and no one, not even the British, can change that.”
‘O words are lightly spoken,’
Said Pearse to Connolly,
‘Maybe a breath of politic words
Has withered our Rose Tree;
Or maybe but a wind that blows
Across the bitter sea.’
‘It needs to be but watered,’
James Connolly replied,
‘To make the green come out again
And spread on every side,
And shake the blossom from the bud
To be the garden’s pride.’
‘But where can we draw water,’
Said Pearse to Connolly,
‘When all the wells are parched away?
O plain as plain can be
There’s nothing but our own red blood
Can make a right Rose Tree.’

I’d like to thank BMCUWP for allowing me to post the diary on SC. Thanks also for the perseverance of those not interested in Irish republicanism and of course thanks for the support for the posts from other blog members. Go raibh maith agat a bhuachalli
Strangely my own family’s Irish republican history is linked by significant dates during Bobby’s hunger strike, perhaps the most obvious being the 5th of May albeit 5 years earlier when my father and eight of his comrades tunneled their way out of ‘Cage 5’ Long Kesh prison camp, the 1st successful mass escape by Irish Republican POW from ‘The Kesh / Maze’.

On the subject of players leaving.
My son was at the Brighton Palace game on Wednesday.
Edouard started but “hardly got a touch” according to my son who was keen to see a former Celt.
As we dominate most games we certainly create more chances for forward players to shine.

On the case of the 5 subs rule I think one of the reasons it could be scrapped to help a certain club is the fact that it would reduce the first team squads by at least 2 players. This effectively reduces outgoings as far as costs are concerned. At present if you believe everything that is written they have a full team on the treatment table and some of their top earners are on it.
Keep them fit. Cut back to 3 subs. Reduce the wage bill and don’t sign replacements. Don’t tell me some bean counter over by isn’t looking at this road. If I can see it surely a bean counter can too.
That indirectly frees up money if they want to strengthen and indirectly weakens us as who within our current squad do we leave out remembering that one of the 3 is a GK.
The establishment within are trying everything at present to derail the train and unsettle Ange so this change to the subs could be another attempt for sure.
As far as guys down south not getting game time MAYBE it’s a case of keep the big earners happy with game time and the guys on a lower wage well they are making more than they were at Celtic so they won’t mind. For me the only real one deserving of a start out of the 4 mentioned was KT. Eddy was lazy a lot Christie thought he was Messi when shooting or at set plays and Ajer was a midfielder who transitioned to a defender. Outside KT the others were exposed in Europe so even although we made good money from them Diddy teams in England is where they have ended up KT aside. He has been unlucky with injuries to an extent also.
Right must fly now tee off 25 mins. FFS.
Surprised they didn’t go for orange 🤣🤣

Good morning friends and a Big Happy St Patrick’s Day Friday to all who post or lurk on this fine site.
Bobby, I’m afraid I have to correct your understanding of the 5 subs rule. After initially being discretionarym brought in quickly for COVID related reasons, for 22-23 it was formally adopted into the rules of the game. Well, sort of….
The rule now is that a MAXIMUM of 5 subs can be used. Theres no minimum. The decision here rests with the body that controls the particular tournament being played – so UEFA decide for Champions League, the SFA decide for our domestic competitions etc.
So, on paper, we might find next season that the domestic rule goes back to 3 subs. Or 1! Or equally, and most likely to be honest, it will remain at 5.
We’ll see (copyright Auldheid….)
Here’s the latest wording (Law 3, Paragraph 2) –

Thank for posting the diaries.
Thank you.
Happy St Patrick’s day all.
JOBO
Aye,the wording makes it complicated. But when UEFA/FIFA increased the maximum number for their competitions,it was widely adapted elsewhere. But the law itself didn’t change, and the organisation in charge of a particular match or competition still has final say.
That’s roughly what I was saying in the article, but more to the point,it is why we should be concerned.
óglach –
Thank you so much for your postings over the last 17 days. I know that folk have done this in the past but I never made it my specific intention to look out for them each day. This year was different, and I eagerly looked out for them each morning (one of a number of small ‘starfish’ things – again, copyright Auldheid! – that I’m doing for Lent).
And as Bobby said, please do keep on contributing.
Aff oot for my daily hobble!
Hi Leggy on our way to Glasgow. Should be able to join you guys just after 2.00.
Hope you’re all still talking sense by then.
Oops, Leggy talking sense 😂😂😂
What am I on about.
Auldheid et al,
This debate is not going the way I had hoped. Firstly, I had hoped that more than you would have been involved but it seems not. This is probably my last contribution on it.
You provide info on what is going to happen with the SFSA review, which is something that I welcomed when it was announced, but nothing on the basic question that I asked. Why is the review not being funded in a manner similar to the Crouch review? Both the SFSA and Crouch relied upon volunteers providing input but there is a world of a difference between having full time researchers and having largely volunteer effort. Unless the SFSA report suggests a deeper funded study, Scotland is only going to get one shot at this, so it is vital that we get this correct. It seems as though the process is being rushed. The original target for the report was this month. Now it is April.
I feel a degree of frustration on this topic for two reasons. Firstly, I, along with others, was invited to provide input. I did so, but one of my sons has a serious illness and he must be my main focus indefinitely. Consequently, I am not as involved as I should be, given the noise I am making. Secondly, I realized that geography is a severe limitation on providing effective input into something like this. I cannot work contacts or methodology as efficiently as if I was in in Scotland, even with technology.
Paul and the rest at the SFSA are wonderful people, punching above their weight, but future governance and fan involvement are very big issues. Without casting mushrooms at the SFSA, I feel it is important that these issues be given the same or similar resources as the Crouch initiative, although some cherry picking can be had from her report and the white paper. Perhaps, Government has thrown something into the pot. I know not. However, IMHO, it certainly should have funded some body to use the Crouch Report/White Paper as a starting point to tackle the issues germane to the Scottish game.
I shall wait until I see the final report from the SFSA which I hope will outline the process used to arrive at its conclusions. Only then will I get a sense of Opportunity seized, or Opportunity lost.

Rebus…thoughts with you, when you previously alluded to issues in the background I assumed it was you who was experiencing health issues, I now understand it is your son. Worrying times indeed for you and yours, I hope he’s getting the best care and advice he can. I’ll keep you both in my thoughts. 🙏
Really hope things work out for you and the family, Rebus.
I will definitely be giving the wee man an extra hug today.
I wish you all the luck in the world, buddy. 💚
Rebus/Auldheid…I’ve no intention of trying to spark a political exchange here but in my mind the Scottish Government has always reminded me of a Parish Council…too much talking, too many insular people, not enough power, too conservative (small c). Nothing I’ve seen, and I admit over the years the SG has had some good initiatives, has ever really made me think otherwise.
The issue with a Fitba Governor is not a priority for our government in Scotland. I don’t think we are subject to the same pressures that the game in England is. Down South it has become a behemoth, an absolutely massive business not subject to the same checks and controls as similar sized businesses. The influx of (mainly Arab) investment is a worry too. It threatens to become bigger and bigger and that can’t be good for fans or for business. It’s basically the single biggest legal money laundering business in the country!
Up here, on the other hand, is a corrupt wee organisation, aided and abetted by the establishment in whatever ways they can help each other. One club benefits from this and the establishment imo is unwilling to rock that particular boat. Any party up here which is deemed to be targeting TRFC is on a hiding to nothing. The Government, the Procurator Fiscal and the Courts have already shown their hand. The SFA have long since played their cards. Factor in the enormous socio/economic position that the SG government finds itself in, factor in the extreme polar views held by the electorate in regard to Celtic and TRFC and it’s a poisoned chalice that no politician wants to hold.
I’m eager to see the SFSA’s report, I long for an independent arbiter but I won’t haud ma breath waiting for it!
Happy St Patrick’s Day,
Yes Gordon.
The whole thing is predicated on a fear of the Irish.
It’s that simple.
It’s not just about Celtic or Catholics.
Many Scots have a deep-rooted fear of Ireland, Celtic represent Ireland.
Today that fear is articulated through the media in a daily onslaught against Celtic/Ireland.
Celtic supporters, perhaps unwittingly sometimes express offensive terms like ‘absentee landlord.’ I’ve even seen Dermot Desmond described as an ‘Irish c**t.”
On these pages – without an obvious challenge.
Through hard work and unremitting intimidation from most sectors of the Scottish establishment the Irish in Scotland have achieved wonderful things.
Scotland’s club Rangers went bust, while cheating.
The authorities aided and abetted every sectarian chancer in the Ibrox boardroom.
Every means possible to undermine Celtic has been utilised. Celtic supporters have been played and turned against one another.
Celtic’s ascendancy guarantees that further attempts will be made to improve what they’ll call ‘competition.’
This currently concerns substitutes.
In due course they’ll start talking about a ‘redistribution of income.’
We know what that means.
Did we hear any concern for competition during the Murray EBT fuelled era?
Nothing has changed, they want to put Paddy in his place.
Across the world today folk are free to express their Irishness.
– Not in fear driven Scotland.
To be Irish isn’t about a nationality, religion, colour or passport.
It’s means much more than that, it’s what Bobby Sands was writing about earlier.
It’s what the British establishment fears and it can’t be bought.
That’s why Bobby could write of such beauty in the face of barbaric cruelty.
It’s our birthright.
No matter the lies, the trolls, the cheating or violence .They just don’t get what it is to be Irish.
They hate that.
Enjoy today’s celebration of Ireland.
I don’t think we are far away from the working class being priced out of football.
The amount of money in some leagues is sickening.
I had a look at what the Man C players earn, it is utterly ridiculous.
How can things continue on this trajectory?
The average man will be forced to choose between attendance and paying the bills.
