Moving On…

I suppose we have to move on from the events of the weekend just gone and look forward to the next one. Sort of. Because, after all,the events of that weekend led to some other rather interesting ones.

Such as the sacking of Robbie Neilson at Hearts. You won’t see me shedding any tears over his long overdue dismissal. You won’t see many of them from the Hearts fans either. Though there might be a few sad thoughts about his departure over Ibrox way. After all,his sides were always good for twelve points a season and four easy training sessions. They would kick and snarl their way through the other 34 games, yes, but against Rangers? That was his chance to experiment with new formations, bring in a few squad players and frankly shrug his shoulders when his side slid to another ignominious defeat.

Not even a bleat from him about poor refereeing being to blame, nothing. You might be excused for wondering which of the two clubs represented on these occasions was closest to his heart. Or paid his wages. Don’t take just my word for it-a Hearts director said as much after the sacking becoming public. And as for his comment that any club outside of Glasgow would give their eye teeth to be in third place,as Hearts were at the time? That would hardly have been music to the ears of his employers, would it? Talk about knowing your audience,Robbie…

One club which does know its audience is TRIFCo,or Rangers or whatever they call themselves these days. Virtually as soon as the final whistle had blown on Saturday,it was Statement O’Clock time. They would be firing off a letter to the SFA demanding an apology and an explanation from the SFA about Clancy’s refereeing that day. The SFA predictably supported the referee, pointing out that a two-handed push by your player on an opponent is actually an offence, even if you are Rangers. This incensed Kenny Miller so much that he all but demanded that Rangers be given a replay of the 2016 final because a free kick in the build-up to Hibs’ winning goal wasn’t really a free kick in his opinion!

Aye really. I’ve got news for you,Kenny. It was. And it won me a right few quid too,cos I had the first scorer, correct score and the scorecast. GIRUY,son. Oh,and by the way,it was seven years ago. Get over it.

Another one from that neck of the woods who is known for tilting at windmills is Dave King. Not content with seeing the back of his nemesis,Douglas Park,he is still demanding that somebody, anybody, but preferably the board, buy his 15% shareholding. The shares aren’t listed anywhere,so the board are free to issue new shares anytime they wish, quantities and price chosen by them. That price is currently set at 25p. A back of the fag packet calculation puts their real value at about the square root of that, while a dispassionate onlooker might more realistically consider a zero valuation to be on the high side.

He wants 40p for his, based on what, nobody knows! Each!! Not terribly well known for always telling the truth,he even told the world-or anyone who could be bothered listening to his drivel-that he had even turned down an offer at that price! Come on,Dave. Pull the other one. You had a good run for someone else’s money, quit while yer ahead.

Lastly,Neil Lennon is still trying to stay relevant after his latest management sojourn turned sour on him. This one was over in Cyprus. His latest interview had him stating that Henrik Larsson in his prime would easily be worth £100m in today’s market. I confess to being quite happy to read that-at last, something I can agree with him about. Except…

Henrik Larsson is undoubtedly the best and most important player we have had in the last quarter of a century. 242 goals in 313 games tells you that. 173 in 206,his totals in his last four seasons with us,probably tells you more. But the problem with that theory is that he was already in his prime years when he joined us in 1997. He turned 26yo in September that year. His first season was hardly a roaring success, and he really only started to fire in his second season, when he scored 38 times. That is almost as many as he scored in four seasons at Feyenoord! But one great season as a striker in Scotland won’t make you a £100m player. He needed to repeat that. Or better it.

Sadly,we all know what happened very early in that third season, and that was it for him until the final stages. Yes,he went to the Euros with Sweden and took a great delight in scoring against England, but still not enough for that valuation,Neil. But his fourth season, the first under Martin O’Neill? Well,53 goals in 50 games would propel you towards that bracket, for sure. Except that by the time the new season rolled along,he would be a month short of his 30th birthday. Hmmm, sacrilege to say it,obviously, but by the time Henrik was scoring with the regularity that makes a player worth that amount of money, the moment had gone.

Of course,he still had another three great seasons and another 120 goals to give us,and I am not knocking the great man. He almost single-handedly won The Champions League for Barcelona when he joined them. Even Ronaldinho idolised him! At the tender age of 35yo,Fergie knew he was just the man to get his Man Utd team back on the title trail-and he didn’t disappoint either! But those four wasted years at Feyenoord probably cost him that move, that big valuation, that NL spoke of. Selfishly,I’m glad that they happened, because he gave us the seven best years of his career. And some wonderful memories as well.

Our King of Kings for a reason.

Robbie the Paisley boy knows where his heart is and it’s not Hertz! This is from their CEO:

“We should be performing better when we play them, (Ibrox) in particular. I’ve seen us have good performances against Celtic. In fact, I would say in the last few weeks our best football was the first-half at Celtic Park, where I thought we were dynamic and really got in about them. But I haven’t seen us do that against (Ibrox) and I don’t know why. We don’t seem to lay a glove on (them) for some bizarre reason and we have to start doing that.” **

As for the hun board behaviour, the five way agreement probably ties the SFA/leagues hands. Watch out for another sponsorship row over the Whisky firm…….

PS ** picked up from another blog hence the Ibrox inserts

Morning all and BMCUWP

First off I think you are being a bit, well, mischievous with your comments re Neil Lennon re Henrik Larsson. I think you know exactly what Neil meant in his retrospective valuation of Henrik. Could have chosen his words better but Henrik has been bettered by few players anywhere since he was in his actual prime. I remain grateful that Mr Peter Lawwell did not return to our club until the autumn of 2003- had he been in place in the summers of 1999 and 2001 Mr Larsson would have been gone and gone for what would not have been for anything like what he was worth.

Robbie Neilson? Rotten player and a putrid manager, in a just world we’ll have heard the last from him. But it isn’t and we won’t. Out there are thousands praying he won’t be coming to their club soon.

Rangers? Sick of reading and hearing about them. So entrenched in dishonesty that the word has no meaning for them. Sinister and nasty , no new laws adopted by UEFA , the Scottish or UK Governments will make a blind bit of difference to the way they carry on. Just beat them on the 30th and keep beating them will diminish them. And hope that HMRC can do this version of them as it did the last

My bus has reached its destination

I wasn’t being mischievous or even ungrateful, though I could probably have worded it better. My point was that Henrik gave us his best years, his prime. The horrific leg break came at the wrong time for him-as if there could ever be a right time for that to happen-in regards of a lucrative transfer, but that the four years being played out of position by Feyenoord were even worse for him. Our King of Kings for a reason.

But yes,I get your point about PL.

Good morning, friends and just 3 more Big Sleeps until we get to see The Champions play.

Echo the thoughts of PPB and Jimbo67, re Neilson and Henrik .

Last season’s SCF summed up Neilson. A final against a side just back from losing the Europa final on penalties. Hearts didn’t lay a glove on them and appeared not too bothered about that either. The words from the CEO left no one in any doubt about where Neilson’s loyalties lie. Having said that…………Steven Naismith !!!! Will probably field Hearts Ladies when they play Rangers post split.
I would welcome a stronger challenge from Edinburgh, and Aberdeen also.

Henrik gave us seven years of his time, and many wonderful memories along the way. Had Lawwell been in the building earlier, there is no way that our No7 would have been allowed to run down his contract. Sold in summer of 2001.

At the risk of upsetting Jimbo67, using the Dave King abacus that grim establishment club with something like 440,000,000 shares carpeting the place are valued at £175,000,000!

OK, so yesterday after reading King’s claim that his shareholding was worth about £25M AND that he had turned down an offer (from an unnamed source in an unnamed universe!) of £40M I had a very, very quick look at their latest accounts (to June 2022) on Companies House.
Their NET ASSETS on the balance sheet are £41.05M. The number of shares in circulation at that date totalled 432.3 million. So, fag packet at the ready, each ordinary share (and that’s the only class of share they have) is worth £0.095. King owns something like 14% of the company, so about 60.5 million shares. King’s shareholding was therefore worth (60.5 million x 9.5p = ) £5.75M as at June 2022. If he really did get an offer of even £25M for his shares he’d have been mad not to sell!!
This isn’t pure guesswork on my part as their last full accounts are publicly available for all to to see:

HL and his worth to us.

In today’s football financial climate — global mentalness / AP’s growth agenda — HL in his 28 to 33 prime would be worth 100 of something.

He would be worth £100mill to Chelsea / L/pool given their current squad imbalances.
He would be worth £100K pw to us to make us credible in the CL proper — knock out stages.
For once I think that NL has a point.

That he never made it in his playing days with us was down to squad depth / known weaknesses.
And a very bad case of the Scottish cringe with very poor away form.

Interesting that it all changed in our run to Seville.
Smaller comp / smaller teams — mojo was found.

All about timing I suppose but he was a front rank superstar when he played with us.
How we would have handled it if todays financial madness had applied then?

One thing where we do disagree — not sure PL would have made much difference.
As noted by the 20/21 implosion / splurge — he has never had a plan just a series of weak gambles.
If BB had his number commercially — we are all CEO’s — I think that HL would have been streets ahead of him.
PL would only have been good enough to sign the cheques.

The problem I see with the hun shares is that they are so low compared with initial start point that they are not worth selling even if you got an offer of 5p
What’s a loss of 4/5 of your money going to do to your morale…. you can always hope theyll recover before you NEED the money and it’s the hope that kills them. Is it no great😀👍😂

The share issues relate to the organisation called Rangers International.

Early lunchtime food for thought/ramble…

(A question might be : Where did the money come from that financed the loans in the first place?

Those loans are being turned into virtually worthless equity/laundred.)

Don’t think of Rangers shares like normal shares/investments. This is a charade.

Don’t think of Rangers as a normal business.

CCB, It might only be worth the ‘imaginary 5p’ – but if that money was questionable in the first place and you have possibly been looked after ‘elsewhere’ in the spiralling costs.

The hope is I guess, if they can sort out the basics, they’ll join the ranks of the smarter guys who know a winner when they see one.

The Old Firm musical chairs and fleecing the plebeians.

– Chances are they’ll follow the fools gold of domination domestically and CL Glory.

The Scottish establishment has bought into the WATP nonsense.

Rangers are the cornerstone of all that.

Without the Big Hoose the whole psychology is threatened.

Folk might just question their core beliefs.

Too big to fail.

The recent accounts (6/4/23) relate to The Rangers Football Club. (Sevco).

Both 2012 outfits.

Rangers supporters have been questioning the level of costs…

Are there hidden payments here? Look at the costs.

(The Edmiston Steamie : or Museum of Modern Art.)

There is money to made in publishing a book of Dave King quotes over the years.

If this is the hue and cry this season (all over a legitimate call by a referee, allegedly) wait until we’re going for The Genuine 54 and 55…

Can’t wait.

Till later.

Good leader, BMCUW.

What Hearts really need, is a manager who will match that club’s-unrelastic-ambitions. Someone who will send out his team to play beautiful football. That would be nice. In reality, what the Jambos will end up with, is another nasty, snarling ex-Hun, with a bitter hatred of Celtic. Step forward Mr Alex Rae. It would be nice-just for the craic, like- if Albert Kidd was offered the post…on the 3rd of May!! How good would that be?

Hail Hail.

April 13, 2023 12:46 pm

TGM…I posted last week this is a scam. It’s a cash business, it’s easy to hide cash. Easier than most honest people realise – so I’ve been told!! 😨
It’s not too much of a stretch to suggest laundering but it takes a will and desire to prove it. That will does not exist. The share issues are smoke and mirrors, King is trying to show that without implicating himself and that is impossible so he suggests he’s been made a too good to be true offer that he turned down, go figure! I know I’m preaching to the converted on here but these guys are playing to a dim bunch that are happy to live in the never never land that SDM promised. It’s incredible that after all the shenanigans there’s still not a serious group of disgruntled bears asking serious questions!

Yes I saw your post last week.

The famous two sets of books.

The prospect of losing the league and the loss of CL income has them seriously rattled.

The same thing happened with Douglas Park’s famous dossier when we won 9 during lockdown.

Alfredo Morelos’ two hands have cost them the league. A Scots/Columbian version of –

‘The Hands Of God.’

– They have to keep those Bears believing that the system is against them.

Ironically when Dave King talked about Celtic relying on CL revenue that scenerio has came home to roost at Ibrox.

Remember when he talked up Rangers and criticised Celtic that was when he was negotiating with Club 1872 to offload his shares.

I think Club 1872 eventually said naw.

It’s always about money with most of them. He came back because of the supposed money he (£20m) invested with Murray.

Remember Kingy promised a Nomad too.

It’s pretty sweet too that he managed to discredit Whyte and Green through the Charlotte Fakes tapes that he allegedly purchased in late 2013/14.

It’s alleged that the revelations on those tapes started to undermine the share price.

King also allegedly gave them to the intrepid DS/DCI Robertson and ultimately the £60m+ Miscarriages of Justice…

It’s like a Carry On script.

Back to the grindstone…

TGM…I think Club1872/1972/2012 said naw because Park et al had started to dilute the share value with the confetti issues. Club 4X saw the value of their investments and their %age holding decrease along with their hopes of a place on the board. Mad Mitch if you’re aboot…regarding last night’s discussion/comments about kit and merchandise;
I’ve got no skin in the game at all, I just wondered where you got the impression that we had no nous or focus! Do you honestly believe anyone in Parkheid is happy that there is no away kit available after the first release sold out so quickly! That’s a laughable position to take. Celtic’s merchandising operation, as you’d expect, eclipses anything in Scotland. We have a fair way to go in terms of matching Barca, ManU, Real and Bayern but I reckon we outperform most other Clubs and many bigger than us.
I don’t know the reasons for the delay in supplying more kit but I’m sure there’s been plenty made behind the scenes of how important it is to ensure a sufficient and regular supply. Incidentally, I’m also sure that whatever the legitimate reasons are for the delay will be pissing off the ADIDAS Account manager for Celtic, I doubt he’s been sat on his hands just waiting for stock to arrive whle his bonus prospects take a hit along with the tills at Parkheid.

April 13, 2023 2:26 pm

McC @ 1.46

Merchandising discussion — please respond to what I write …
Plus you have stated that we have a merchandising team “second to none — not what I see.
All I have done is highlight an area where they have come up short by some significant margin.

I am sure that the execs were unhappy at our lack of stock but it took them 5 months plus to fix it.
Missing out the Christmas selling season in the process — not good.

That to me suggests that they lack the focus / nous to fix the situation.
A focused management team doesn’t accept excuses / they get things done.
A management team with nous understands the commercial value of the second / alternative strips and works them to the max.
We have had a series of low energy / low innovation second / third strips and the club seem to be caught on the hop when one was a big seller — that would appear to be the most likely reason for the lack of stock.

Main strip — followers rather than leaders regarding detailing / materials / styles.
Fair enough that the hoops are iconic — but we are followers regarding collars / arms + cuffs / stitching / advert styles.
I think we should be aiming for better standards and more progressive shirts — where is the innovation?

Some numbers would help this debate — unfortunately I don’t have any to hand.
Something to work on but if anyone has some shelf data then please post.

Plus we have the NB sideshow to get over — I hope they paid a lot of money because they didn’t help build the brand / club with their efforts. To me it was another failure by PL.

April 13, 2023 2:55 pm

MAD as a hatter Mitch…I thought I had responded to what you wrote! Anyhoo, a
quick look across the world of soccer shows generic styles changing with trends. My wee guy is 17 and loves some of the stuff available whereas I’m a bit more traditional.
Adidas/Nike/NB/Puma etc will mess with colours and patterns but a kit for 22/23 will generally be the same all over the world. Celtic in agreeing a deal with Adidas will agree to sign off on certain things but Adidas will have final say as they know the markets more than you, me or Celtic. It’s alright to spout off but it’s better you have an understanding of what you’re spouting off about!
We have a merchandise department that is pretty damn good whether you agree or disagree. They might not be perfect but you’ll struggle to find one who is in the rapidly changing fashion markets. Celtic have to mass produce a limited range of products with mass appeal whilst moving with the times, it’s got to be done twice a year to be relevant. They are guided by designers and producers who know what sells. You must accept that it would not be financially viable for Celtic to have an in-house design team so rely on others to guide them.
Adidas will have looked at previous styles/colours/designs as well as the current economic position and agreed production numbers with Celtic based on what had gone before and how particular styles sold elsewhere. To produce something that sold as well as the last away kit did is superb but presumably there was not enough slack in the production stream to satisfy further demand as quickly as either party or the support needed. I doubt nous or focus was an issue, in fact you could argue nous and focus were what led to it’s overwhelming success.

April 13, 2023 2:56 pm

JNP… something wrong with those figures!! We need more nous and focus to get them up a bit!! 🤣

Sorry but that is fan bhoy nonsense / excuse monger central.
Your comments would appear that you love the merchandising department more than you love the football team.
The 2022 away strip shows the size of the market.

That both the merchandising department / Adidas were taken by surprise by its popularity would suggest both are not fully engaged with the subject or the support.

The low energy / low sales 2021 / 2020 / 2019 … designs just highlight how poor our efforts have been.
That details how poor the efforts of our merchandising department have been.
Not something to celebrate.

Regarding Adidas — where are we in their roster of football teams?
Top 10 — not sure / Top 20 hopefully.
How much of their effort do we get?

Hoops and a couple of stiffs must be an easy account for them to service.
If you don’t challenge your suppliers you don’t get the best out of them.

Global sales — plug numbers / interweb chat

3 million sales = Top rank
2 million sales = Top 5
1 million sales = Top 10 / 12.

Our friends in Govan were claiming 250K sales for their infamous “George Square (go)” strip of 2021.
Might suggest sales of 5K with their usual uplift or it might suggest that it didn’t like soap and water and multiple purchases were the norm.

No matter — any numbers regarding our sales would be a big help.
What is clear that no matter our numbers — we are getting top dollar with our restrictive selling strategy.

Finally — has the CFC shop in Dublin closed?
From memory — I can remember some chat about it but not sure.

Fanbhoy…for fuck’s sake! That’s a first!
Re the industry…I note Mary Quant died today. My old man was chief pattern maker and dressmaker for Quant’s Scottish equivalent, Marian Donaldson in the 70s and 80s. He’s had stuff displayed in the People’s Palace and in the new Transport Museum. I’ve got no skin in the game but my niece has worked for Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood among other renowned designers. She’s dressed Kylie, Beyonce, Rhianna and Rita Ora for major tours. It’s probably fair to say that over the years I’ve had a passing interest in the industry. No more than that and wouldn’t consider myself any kind of expert but I’ve tried to understand that if Celtic were able to sell 200000 strips instead of 100000 they would have!!

April 13, 2023 3:34 pm

JNP…I got her and her boyfriend the trip for her 21st. The flights to Porto tripled in price in the last 4weeks! I’d given her the choice of Barca, Madrid or Porto as it’s essentially the same festival from city to city.
There’s a lot of local bands playing but New Order, Blur and Sparks are the biggest names. There’s a few next tier bands she’ll love to see but I can’t really remember who other than Yard Act and Nation of Language, a couple of bands I’d quite to see!
It’ll be a great trip for her, she was at the Barca gig last year.

Have some skin in the game — my ma ran the drapery counter for the Kiltoon store.
Could dress a showhouse in 24 hours with local manufacturing — aka a seamstress in a cupboard — and a full supply chain of travellers driving Morris Marina estates and a parcel delivery operation that thought Jackie Stewart lacked a bit of pace.

In the go-go world of 70’s soft furnishings — 5 and a half months late was old fashioned / ancient history / talked about in the street.

She was mass market / got the job done.
Your mob was a bit niche / chi chi.

Same materials / different attitudes.

In that context we mucked it up regarding this season’s away kit.
We don’t know our audience and we don’t know what sells — not good.

I have some experience in supply chain management / supplier engagement so the travails of the merchandising department have struck a chord with me regarding the efforts needed to put goods on sale — tough gig but 98.5% success is the norm and if not there is always air freight.

However I fear our issues go beyond that.
We don’t understand our marketplace and we think low energy is all we have got / all we should expect / all we need.

Third kit — we need to go Mexico at the recent WC.
They had a white jersey with Aztec subtle imagery running through it.
From memory it was admired by many and comments made the Cave / CQN back in the day.

My thoughts — copy with pride.
White jersey with keltic / pictish runes and imagery running through it would be a winner for us — cultural icon if you like.

It might even appeal to your designer background — you never know.

Recently, the Guardian published a story on the use of foreign referees. The gist of it is as follows. Apparently the Greek League has a playoff format at the end of the season. Being concerned over perceived bias, the FA decided to import Polish officials to adjudicate these games. Polish officials were flown in for this purpose. Here the story splits into at least two versions….one according to the Poles and the other according to the Greeks. According to some passengers and crew on the flight, the Poles got heavily into the drinks trolley and made derogatory remarks re the standard of Greek football. Allegedly, they also punched a passenger who was a football fan. Not surprisingly, the Polish version differs, wherein they claimed that they were maligned and assaulted by drunk Greek fans onboard the aircraft. And there was me thinking that Ryan Air was poor!

The outcome is not in doubt, however. The Poles were stood down from officiating the playoff game and Greek officials were dragooned into reffing the match at short notice. The other teams involved in the playoffs protested after the game that the selected officials were biased in favour of one of the clubs… short, a stramash of a scenario!

Now, apart from gossip, what can be learned from this? Firstly, the concept of bringing in foreign refs seemed to be a sound one. Questions can be asked about the selection process and the competence of the selected officials. Are foreign refs really on a different level from local refs? While one cherry does not constitute a bunch, we can see that no matter the intent, it is the nature of the people selecting and being selected that drives any proposed system. Heck, we already know this! Just look at VAR!

Off on some travels for the rest of the day,

Older son’s current favourite top is the grey 3rd strip, (the one where we lost at St Mirren). Younger son likes to go retro. Our 1995-97 hooped monstrosity is his jersey of choice. Big Pierre and all that. Each to their own.

Me ? Just a plain five hooped jersey , round collar, no sponsor, no number on the back. White shorts, with number. Plain white socks, should always just be plain white socks. But that’s just a generational thing from an old fogey like me.

Coming up with something fresh and eye catching, every couple of years, will be quite a challenge for Adidas/Celtic. The MadMitch chap appears to have all the answers. To just about every subject under the sun.
