Let’s keep this run going!

I’m dubbing this side the almost Invincibles, and it’s my sincere hope we end the season with only the solitary domestic blip on our record.

Why? Lots of reasons, especially as no Tim likes to see the team beaten, the only exception being a loss that would actually benefit the club in the long term, as in getting an unworthy manager the sack.

Maybe the biggest reason would be it would be just rewards for the gaffer and the Bhoys.

Its hard not to compare this current outfit with the actual invincibles, only one result separates them this far.

Would it be fair to state Brendan was dealt a better hand than Ange? Yes.

The Ulsterman arrived with the core of a decent team already in situ and needing only tweaked via some quality additions, our Greek Australian has only the barebones and had to built almost from scratch.

Brendan preferred players with experience of UK football, Ange drafts in mostly foreigners, making it harder to properly communicate and built collective morale.

Brendan arrived with a premade reputation which would have ensured a high level of respect and attentive players. Ange was almost unknown in these parts, moved halfway across the world at the drop of a hat, and had to earn the right to be respected by the players and the support, after all there was no 15k in joyful chorus hailing his arrival as a serious coup.

Ange is up against VAR and very biased whistlers, Brendan had it much easier.

The gaffer had to overcome a dodgy beginning to his reign, a mid-season World Cup, and big transition every window, none of which plagued the unemployed ex Leicester manager.

Given the heights each had to climb in order to be in and around that hallowed record, it’s clear to me Ange had a much bigger mountain to climb.

Now yes we won’t be Invincibles, which was impressive, but ending the campaign with a solo blip in only his second season after taking over a shit show would be very impressive for any ‘random’ foreigner.

One single step away would be staggeringly good given the toll the Champions League takes on our group, losing your second striker, jaded Internationals, two different managers at our rivals in that same season, plus going very deep in both cups.

One step away from an Invisible treble would surely tell us all we have one hell of a manager in the dug-out.

The next step on that journey starts Sunday. Let’s win and keep this run going!

Good morning, friends.
Good points, Mahe. I actually think that the invincible run became a bit of a millstone in several games where we seemed more concerned with not losing rather than pushing on for more goals. This season has been much more enjoyable for me personally with our ‘we never stop’ approach.

The achievement of Ange in one word…… remarkable!

Ange has one or two major advantages over Brendan 1 in that he doesn’t have to contend with PL interfering with the playing squad. It seems as if Ange will, hopefully, never have to contend with having players he has had zero input in selecting foisted on him, and 2 Celtic actually dipped into the biscuit tin to fund Anges’ rebuild. Ange was the 1st manager in some considerable time who was actually allowed to spend money improving the team, that is money that had not wholly been generated from player trading.

Wingers, we have millions of them CSC

AP has worked what he knows to the max.
Pretty much a clean slate when he arrived — new captain / new defence / new forward line.
Brings its own challenges but also its own opportunities.

The state of the existing squad at this time shames our board and their planning.
Plus all the punts / projects that PL had sourced from deepest / darkest Yorkshire.
You get the impression he knew all the right notes — just could not play them in the right order.

Interesting to see how OU progresses after his time in Belgium.
LS has had a tough shift trying to make sense of the sheep.

Not their fault — just a second rate bean counter / Irish Raj playing with peoples careers.
Hopefully we are planning a very productive summer.
Few gaps to fill / quality and talent to find.

Next season is looking critical for our way forward– will we invest in the squad or will we just trade our way to a better squad?

AP’s time at the club — the numbers would suggest that we have not invested in the squad.
The 2021 wantaway clear-out provided the cash for three transfer windows of new players.
AP got creative in Jan where he used a potential negative to fund another round of new talent.

Squad development / improvement means that some will want bigger wages as their reputation improves.
He saw who they were / understood their demands — age / potentially much bigger wage — and moved them on to our benefit. No moaning and groaning / no media ding dong about saving anyone from their G40 penury / wage hell.

All things considered — good outcome allround.
Established quality moved on / twice the amount of talent / growing quality coming in.

As noted in the interview put up on here yesterday — AP is a grade one duck’er and diver because he had to be in a lot of his previous jobs — he would appear to see his job as providing solutions and not moaning for more money.

Or he could spot the limitations / foibles / rank stupidity of our board and “masters” from halfway around the world and is responding appropriately.

AP3 / Summer Window — will we invest or just trade?
We will have the cash to spend but then again we have a Main Stand to rebuild.

£100mill stadium spend — £20mill cash investment / £20mill corporate debentures / £60mill bonds.
Bonds @ 4 / 5 / 6% return based on our results — better than Premium bonds …

I think the debenture angle could be improved upon regarding the £20mill number.
Lifetime seats where you only pay for the hospitality grub?

What would 4 or 8 seats be worth to our captains of industry / London based crooners?

.

JNP et al @ what might have been …

LG vs football — huge talent that made a lot of hard things look easy.
He just highlights how immature our society is.
It was just too easy for him.

4×4 — too many thought it was just a laugh

On a similar vein:

WGS angle — DR — where is he now / hopefully not divorced from his daughter?
26 county angle — AS — never made it to his da’s pub / the locals didn’t think it was a great idea.

A thing of beauty

I have been thinking a lot about the game last week and the relatively poor performance from Celtic. Granted you can only play as well as your opponents allow but I felt we spent too much time with the to you to me passing the ball between CCV and Starfelt. I mentioned after the game that I thought it was due in part to CCV being on an early booking and wary to give up possession but it is also becoming clear that teams including the Huns are happy to leave Starfelt with the ball as they know he poses little threat. This was proved in the huddle podcast where the brilliant Alan Morrison gave figures for each player possessions and Starfelt was top.
So from this I would deduce that it is time to give kobayshi his chance at centre half. He can pass the ball and bring it out more naturally as he is left sided and a better footballer. If we are going to do this we need to do it starting tomorrow and again next week so he is bedded in for the semi final.
The other side of this is that is we saw on Saturday the Huns play for set pieces and crosses into the box. This is Starfelt’s strength and he is massive when defending our box.
So do we sacrifice his defensive ability to put kobayashi in so we can be more expansive. I would, but then again if you ask me in half an hour I’ll have changed my mind.
Right off out on the bike. I’ll check in later to see if anyone has any thoughts.

I think Starfelt is like a fish out of water as a left-sided centre back. Having said that,he has mainly done well in the role. I think CCV might be subject to bids in the summer, which will allow Starfelt to play n the right, with Kobayashi on the left. Meantime,I’m loath to split up a partnership.

In future years this match become almost less about Keane’s debut and was actually remembered more for another new signing making his first start for Celtic. The performance of Chinese defender Du Wei is still remembered by fans who watched the match to this day. In his one and only appearance for Celtic the international player was run ragged and looked completely out of his depth. Sixteen years later he still gets mentioned by fans discussing failed transfers.

ATOB…Starfelt has been allowed to play out by almost all teams all season. He is the weak link in Angeball and most teams target him and our left back area as it is the weakest area of the park. It’s no surprise really as GT does tend to be 15 or 20 yards out of position when we are on the turn and Starfelt is on his standing foot! My thoughts are that last week TRFC played a higher, more compact press on our fullbacks and midfield. Ange clocked this and tweaked our shape in the 2nd half to our advantage. Would bringing Kobayashi in to the team, at this late stage with pressure on for a Final place, be the right decision when Starfelt has had a great season defensively? Kobayashi would be targeted as there’s no way Bealin’ is gonna try Kent against AJ and CCV as a 90 minute tactic. Leave well alone is my thoughts, they gave us a wee scare last week, nothing more I don’t think. As was said before, during and since we are the better team, the better squad, the better manager, we need to worry about the guy in the middle and the guy in the VARavan as much as the opposition, they could be much more dangerous. Especially after the press they’ve had this week!

Helping out the Sheep — too easy,

DR — not the paper / the player — the hint was in the rumour that he was knicking aboot with WGS’s daughter back in the day.

OU vs Jupiter League / JL — seems to have found a reasonable level of performance.
Looked as raw as sushi playing for us but he seemed to kick on when he was put out on loan.
Got a good write up from the locals and looked a lot less tense / more involved in the play according to last year’s highlight reel.
Seen very little of this season so not sure where he currently is at.

Plus we have the strange case of JH to consider — local laughing stock turned JL star.
If he was available for us — would he get a game / what could he offer?

I think there will change at CB regarding next season’s team.
Not sure what change but things will happen / move on.
Will anyone offer a big wage to CS?

On our books …
BL looks as if he needs more work / games at a higher level than the Lowland League.
DM seems to have drifted away from prominence after his 2021 Euro exploits — not sure if he had a bad injury in the past year.

Plus RP was always on the agenda / interweb chat until he moved to Watford.
Not sure if the SPL could provide any other candidates.

‘In the second half Jansen brought on Henrik Larsson…..Larsson’s only contribution on the day was to be a memorable one but not for the best of reasons. In 75 minutes he misplaced a pass at the edge of his own area and presented Chic Charnley with an ideal opportunity to score with a terrific shot from 20 yards’ 🙈

I think the main reason for the ccv -cs pass the parcel was that sevco were looking to cut off the pass from the back through to Callum.
This was very evident in the first 10 mins .
When watching the game back I thought Callum could have done better to help the CBs by making an angle for a pass .I lost count of the number of times he put himself behind the sevco player blocking the pass ,he just seemed to move along with the sevco player placing himself in line behind the sevco player and our CB on the ball .
I was thinking.,callum check your run and the angle will open up but too many times he kept putting himself behind the sevco player .
That aided with mooy having a poor passing game hindered us greatly
Will be interesting to see what happens in the semi .sevco played like st johnstone only with better players they put everything into stopping us hence 3 attempts on target

McCaff
April 15, 2023 2:02 pm

FSTB…Mooy had a ‘mare which contributed massively to our usual game but Calmac uses his role to try to open up the passes to the inverted fullbacks and/or the wingers. TRFC closed us down really quickly across the whole midfield. It was a very simple tactic by them demanding a lot of hard work and not their usual game. Ange stuck to his same old same old until the 2nd half when he changed a couple of things, I’m not really sure what but he created a bit more space to play in the 2nd half. I stated earlier in the week credit where it’s due to TRFC but ultimately they just weren’t/aren’t good enough!
It will be interesting at Hampden because Ange did suss them, they played their most attack-minded team but still didn’t do enough to win, the stats were all in our favour. So what does Bealin’ do in the semi, sit back and allow us to come onto them or try the high press as he did at Parkheid and hope, as that’s all they’ve got now, that we’ve forgotten in a space of 3 weeks how to counter it!! Rock and hard place for Bealin’ at Hampden, I think!!

No manager in the history of domestic football will equal or achieve what Brendan Rodgers did, like it or not.

You see some Celtic fans attempting to undermine his success – the zombies were in transition, just promoted or whatever – the zombie spent more money than Brendan Rodgers did.

Nobody, anywhere wins 3 more or less 4 trebles in a row – it’s unprecedented and it’ll never happen again.

Same as the old Martin O’Neill was only successful because he inherited Henke – absolute codswallop.

Last Saturday we were poor more than they were good.

Their aggressive high press — 4 across at the front as much as possible with two sitting in behind was a high wire act without a safety net. Just a case that we struggled to pass through it. Giving the ball away for fun didn’t help our cause but we looked undercooked for far too much of the first half.

I think the occasion got to us more than it got to them — we looked very nervous and took time to settle.
Hopefully this gets addressed for the SCSF — not sure that they will play the same game.
If we had our passing boots on they would have taken one hell of a beating.

Playing six vs our five as we play out from the back is a high risk strategy.
They had one punch to stay in the league and they failed even as we stumbled about.
They will play a cannier / Euro style game in two weeks time.

Hopefully we are ready and have our game face on.
