The Build Up…

Morning,all.

The build up to the weekend semi against the huns really began when the draw was made. Suggestions that the police/authorities decided that it would be easier to manage the fans of a losing side in a semi than in a final, despite the semi being played over the bank holiday weekend. Etc,you get the drift.

Whatever,Sunday lunchtime sees us lining up against our fiercest rivals. Winning it will take us a huge step towards our 5th treble in seven years, and one in front of them. If they win it,they will celebrate like they’ve won the bloody treble!

No player really ever needs an incentive to win any game, but I’ve just given you two in a short paragraph. But there’s more,as the saying goes…

The last few weeks since we gubbed them at Celtic Park have already seen them go into meltdown on and off the pitch. I won’t even mention Beale contradicting himself with every successive press conference,or telling the fans that the team he is managing isn’t actually his team. Clue-almost every member of the covid title team is still there.

Ok,I did mention it. Maybe he has told the fans that buying Tillman for £5m is a no-brainer,but it shouldn’t come out of his transfer budget as the outline deal was agreed before he turned up. That there will be a huge and costly-and much needed-rebuild in the summer. And the funds are in place

Hmmm…

I dunno who told him that. Maybe it was the chairman. Oops,he left earlier this month. Maybe it was their Director of Football. Naw,he jumped ship anaw. Their managing director, then? Difficult. He was roundly abused by fans immediately after the Aberdeen defeat, with his daughter in the car beside him,and basically called it a day.

Can’t say I blame any of them. Nobody is sufficiently well paid to put up with that. Park put a fortune, probably unwisely, into the club. See where it got him-and the other two hired hands can only do so much when their own hands are shackled. No money these days, you have nowhere to go.

Still, their pals in the media will spend all day bigging up their chances, and they are right to do so. We’ve been on the end of many an upset in our time-I still have nightmares about that Clyde game in 2006,for instance-and we can take nothing for granted. Particularly since our recent form is not good, despite the consistency of our results. One rag even rolled out an ex-hun nobody to explain to a world eagerly awaiting a masterplan on how to beat us. I recognised his name, but couldn’t quite understand why anyone should splash his thoughts across the sports pages-apart from the obvious!

His plan is essentially to do what they did to us the last time, close down our two centre halves and swarm CalMac. Erm,that only worked until Ange got a good hold of them at half time, mate. Ange is no idiot, and there are few of them in our side either. There IS such a thing as Plan B or C. Or Z if necessary. And if Maurice Ross was that good a coach,he wouldn’t have got Cowdenbeath relegated from the SPFL for the first time in their history.

Scottish media is full to the gunnels with “experts” whose only qualification is a couple of years in blue. We’ve all been subjected to their ridiculous analysis for far too long now. Blue lenses every time. Can that club ever move forward when people are genuinely doing their best under very trying circumstances, yet get hounded from office by entitled ingrates? Can the game in general ever move forward with blue lenses all across the media?

I think not. The blinkers, the lies, the promotion of the talentless, will always piss us off. But thinking about it,the longer may it continue. Let’s face it,it’s worked well for them so far,eh?

Give them hell on Sunday,Ange. Bring your A-game for the day,it has been much missed recently, and put this shower to bed. Four departures from their management/board is a good start, but a real good hammering on Sunday could put them on the road to hell. It’s where they belong, and it is long overdue.

You are correct about one thing , our form has not been good. We need Hart and centre halfs to play out quicker from the back and our midfield to be brave in accepting the ball, taking their midfielders out the game.
Would also like to see us play it over the top more for Kyogos runs that he continually makes

One thing that I noticed about the City game last night, was how quickly that they got every man behind the ball, when they lost possession in the final 3rd.
This is something we need to improve on for next season in Europe.

Correct Bobby, if we bring anything near to our A game, that mob will not be able to get near us.

Morning all! Good article Bobby. Play our own game and we’ve not much to fear.
St Tam’s…City’s first goal was a left back clearance to Haaland on the halfway line, a knock inside to Kevin and he was off, still had a ton to do but he exposed the space between the two CBs and finished well.
So, yeah, there’s always a place for a ball over the top. Particularly against this mob on Sunday. They’ve not got a decent defender in their back 4 – all dodgy on the deck, all suspect in a high line. If we play as we know we can…

Good morning, friends.
Thanks for the read, Bobby. I honestly think we are going to need more jelly and ice cream. Meanwhile, my popcorn supplies are keeping me going.
Of course, regardless of their woes, we should be going about our own business properly and in the main we are. If we lose on Sunday it’ll be very disappointing but with no real serious fallout I suppose. But if they lose – and the bookies have them as high as 2/1 to win – then all hell will break loose.
Really looking forward to Sunday.
Finally, apologies if it was someone o here who already mentioned this but maybe I’m stealing it from the other channel – having lost to Aberdeen on Sunday Beale’s next 3 opponents are Celtic, Aberdeen and Celtic. He really will need to Fink Fings Fru for those games!

Morning from the bus to work.

Good stuff BMCUWP- called it right. They are a mess with God knows what in front of them.

And yet why am I so uneasy going into this one? Partly it’s having lived through so many 2nd favourites winning these games. Maybe it is the new VAR Variant. But mostly it’s because of us. Since the international break we have put together a good last 15 in Dingwall, a patchily good second half versus them , a good first 30 at Rugby Park and some momentum near the end on Saturday that did not force a win. We played splendidly in a lot of the matches after 2nd Jan derby but the key performers in that run, Hatate and Mooy, have big questionmarks against them going into Sunday whilst one of our other star attackers, Jota, might not play too.

Sunday is the kind of game that teams managed by Jock Stein, Martin O’Neill and Brendan Rodgers produced their best and ended up emphatic winners – albeit Martin’s teams sometimes missed out on the subsequent grand finale l, whilst Rodgers did so against Rangers teams that were inferior to the current one.

If we lose on Sunday it won’t be disaster – unless it’s a tanking – but it will be a more significant disappointment than a year ago I think and a sign we have progressed less than we think. We should win but…

My unease is now back to the old anxiety. We are the better team, have better players and a superior coach. But even big Jock’s and Martin’s teams did not always win.

City last night — was like watching spirograph football.
Passing in patterns / movement in circular patterns.

The ball was played around to people who had limited space.
However they did have — or more correctly would have — options to pass given all the movement around them.

The trick was in the timing — wait until the pass was on.
It was only a matter of time because of the perpetual motion of their team-mates.

Very simple process but it takes confidence to hold onto the ball under pressure and wait for your team-mate to make the angle for the pass. The Erse just couldn’t work it out and stop all of the passing options all of the time.

The trick would appear to get some tackles in to break City’s rhythm and dent their confidence.
Worked a couple of times but not enough for them to be even halfway competitive.

Something to aspire too.
Our current issue would appear to be a lack of movement at times.

The prognoses generally for Sunday seem to be about what we bring or don’t bring to the battle, as opposed to what’s in the Huns armoury.

They are weaker in every position (except Pen taking and direct free kicks in sight of goal!!)

Keep our focus and we don’t give them opportunities- no diving in/ around the 20 yard mark particularly.

Partnering a ring rusty Goldson with either of the other soft centres should have Kyogo smiling. Potentially 4th game in a row v them for Kyogo to leave his mark.

The Huns are hugely critical of most of their team,
– apart from the new midfield superstars, whom they ardently praise, but seem pretty average to me.

Calmac &co can take control and dictate play in midfield.

Probably too soon for Reo and Liel from the off but hopefully Jota makes it.

Man City one up after seven minutes last night. Dominated the entire match, should have been at least four ahead by half time. If football is played as much in the head as it is on the grass then last night was telling, right from the start. City players : we will win this. Arsenal players: we are going to lose this, probably quite badly.

Celtic’s squad is a few levels below those of Man City but they can adopt the same mindset. Dominate every area of the pitch right from Willie’s first whistle. Play with the heid, bhoys.

JimDom…my wee guy was saying before last night’s game ‘Arsenal’s pre-match talk should be easy, win this and we win the League!’ My reply was exactly as you say, City will prove stronger mentally, Arsenal haven’t shown the bottle when they needed to. Celtic in the SPL haven’t made many mistakes this season, we all agree they’re not playing as well as we’d like them to but generally speaking we’re a better side all round. Skills, depth of squad, tactics and mentally. It’s all about Celtic on Sunday. Do what we know we can and the result is a foregone conclusion!

Wasn’t a hoofed clearance by Akanji. Was calculated to be an out from the press. Ederson does it as well.
Cruyff’s assertion that why shouldn’t a smaller team beat a richer team, he’s never seen a bag of money score a goal belies de Bruyne, Grealish and the ManMachine.
Skills, technical ability and intelligence we should aim for.

McCaff
April 27, 2023 12:41 pm

SteveNaive…it was more the tactic and the positions of the players I was thinking about. I wasn’t suggesting it was down to luck, far from it! The pass, the first touches from Haaland and KdB were all superb. If any part of the move hadn’t been so well executed it would have remained 0-0 for another coupla minutes at least!!! 😲😀

A read an article on Sunday by Wayne Rooney .
He was previewing last nights game.
He said if you watch Halaand and De Bruyne during a game , if there is any break in play , they are continually talking to each other.
The way they link up is exceptional.

On a number of occasions last night, especially in the first half, when Man City played the ball back to their keeper, not a single Arsenal player attempted to press him. Instead, they stood around 15 yards away and watched as he decided what to do with it. On 1 occasion he had the ball at his feet, motionless, for about 30 seconds before an Arsenal player strolled towards him. They were a goal down at this point but showed zero urgency to get involved. Baffling.

Arsenal appeared consumed, and frozen at times, by fear. City can do tippy-tappy all day long, but with Haaland in their armoury they can also go long. For Arsenal it was heads they win, tails we lose.

Celtic can go long on Sunday, when required, but with a view to winning the second ball, not the first. Kyogo and Haaland were not quite separated at birth.

I assume, that you’ll have seen the images of the proposed home Jersey for next season? My first thought? Only 5 green hoops? Not for me. A proper Celtic Jersey should have 7 green hoops. No more. No less. Though the Centenary Jersey only had 5 green hoops, and I thought that Jersey was a belter. I personally think this is fake news. A white crest on a white hoop? A white sponsor logo on a white hoop? There is zero chance that this is happening. On telly, both the crest and the sponsor logo would be rendered invisible. Can’t see the sponsor going along with that.
