The Whacky Races!

Unscriptable, that’s been our start to the 23/24 campaign.
Ange departs.
2 first team veterans leave.
2 prospects get signed.
Summer tour is a bust.
New home shirt sucks.
Fixture computer shafts us again.
That’s the bad news.

The good news is,,,
upgraded the manager.
Try before you buy was again proven successful.
Eight figures profit on a player is tremendous business.
Barkas is gone.
Those prospects look serious.
We haven’t even started strengthening yet and the manager says quality over quantity.
Our young squad is yet to peak.
Kyogo, CCV, and Hatate are still in the building, the spines intact.
We should improve as a team and as individuals.

It all depends on your viewpoint how you accept the current state of affairs, and accept we all must.
We must accept we are a two year club for serious talent, be that onfield or the dugout.
We must accept the wages on offer for Boy Wonder are phenomenal.
We must accept more Jota’s and Ange’s passing through to raise their profile.

We must learn our lesson here. The PLC certainly should. Took a (big enough) hit on Barkas and Soro under Peters kissing frogs strategy. Put a real football man in charge and his first major sale brings in 13million profit.
Did I want more, yes.
For PR sakes we could have stuck to a record fee ala 26million.
I’m hoping there’s some method to that madness, like keeping KT sweet.

Lord knows the club could certainly do with changing the record, gone, gone, gone and two younguns in was always going to leave some Tims extremely nervous. I’m very relaxed about the situation simply because the Club are well positioned to deal with the vagaries of the modern day game.
I seen folks asking for the Jota money to fund a quality replacement and thought that’s not the Ajax way. They have a player waiting in the wings to fill that berth, they don’t go out and buy a replacement every time.
And like Ajax we have Liel and James knowing what it takes, ready to step in, plus the A-Leagues brightest young star has arrived with analysts insisting he’s first team ready and will excite the Tims.
Like Odin, we never used to get these players, the young bright light. They were snatched up by bigger fish in the pond,,like Odegard to Real Madrid, or Arzani to City.
Now though, we are very much in the picture for those wishing to breakout on the scene, somewhat thanks to the City Groups influence.
And being invited to dine at Europes top table.
And you of course, the atmosphere you create.

So things are hectic, yes, but don’t panic. Right now the club are a victim of circumstances, soon they shall get active in adding more quality to a quality group, and others can deal with the circumstances of facing a new improved Brendan Rodgers Celtic side.

Every piece of bad news will simply multiply the feel good factor of the good news to come.
Every player departure saves wages obviously,,could we combine Mooys and Jota’s income for that next level bastard of a midfielder?
A bit of quality needed the manager said, and that don’t come cheap.
Well we’ve just a chunk to the coffers for said quality, as if the anticipation levels weren’t high enough.

After what’s been a bad week PR wise, the best thing is to have a good week. Id place a bet on a signing next week, just to change the tune and get on the front foot PR wise. The club are pretty savvy that way in my book.

Others can laugh all they want, I’m thinking Saed and Tilio will tear this league up.
Mooys replacement Iwata is blooded and in situ.
His understudy (Odin) is in the house, so is DT.
Rocco Vata might grow wings, and Oh looks a find from where I’m sitting.
The backup is there, it’s good quality, I fully agree a couple of next level players plus Brendan’s coaching should improve an already good Celtic side. Trebles aren’t won by bad teams. Record goal tallies aren’t scored by bad teams.
Everyone and their granny can laugh at our supposed misfortune, people heading for the hills.
I know which manager I’d like in charge this season.
I know which squad in the nation I would rather have inherited.
I know which transfer kitty I would prefer.
I know I would like potential players to meet a very good football manager still on the way up with a global reputation and a man who has been there, seen it and done it with the T-shirt somewhere to prove.
I know I’m looking forward to the next chapter of the teams escapades.

Boardroom wise, it’s a bit of a shit show.
Ange was the glue holding the Asian tour together, once he departed the organizers realized the writing was on the wall and shall swallow the smaller sorry guys payment rather than eat the mega costs for multiple stadium hires, and the associated advertising.
Turns out Ange’s departure cost us some money down the line, strange sport this.

Aaron Mooy leaves with my best wishes (I’m sure I speak for us all) and what a way to bow out,,a treble and admiration to boot. Now he’s time on his hands I think I’ll badger him for an interview.

The random fixture calendar will be soon choking when the Bhoys blast off against the big guns, leaving them match fit to face our rivals. Brendan teams (unlike Ange’s) explode out of the trap, are primed to go from day one of the serious fixtures. We have been handed an unmissable opportunity to lay down a serious statement of intent in the first round of fixtures.

Clearly the AI bot believed giving us the tougher opponents first would increase the pressure on Brendan before it came to the first derby clash.
That works both ways bot.
If we’ve wiped the floor with the rest of the best, that means we are prepared for the blue onslaught, and also means if we dispatch that team it’s rearview mirror time.
Never send an AI program to do a man’s job old papi used to say.

The kit, and the tour means we won’t hit our peak earnings this year, pity as it’s a subject that interests me. Raising the income allows moving from the 2/3 million pound/euro punts to the 5 or 6 million buys, which have a much higher success rate overall. More onfield excitement for us, more player profit to upgrade the different facets of the club,,,what’s not to like?

Unlike the old advertisement I don’t see trouble ahead. We have the right hands on the tiller and deep enough pockets to ride out any off season storm hurled in our path, to emerge better and stronger.
Shifting waters just after you set out, hardly a Captains nightmare scenario.
Let’s not beat around the bush here,,,this isn’t the repeat of the Peter & Lenny show circa 2015/6.
This is Dermot and Brendan in cahoots this time.
With an automatic pathway into Europe, for now.
That coefficient needs saved and the best Irish manager of his generation becomes amenable while he’s given the record wedge ever and a great bunch.
Buckle that seatbelt folks.
This is going to be one hell of a ride.

Time Celtic offered Hatate a real contract or else he’ll be oot the door next along with Kyogo and Daizen

July 1, 2023 12:14 am

Mags, it’s personal with the Asian contingent.
Knew Ange, decent pay raise, really enjoyed the club so went all in together.

Leader moves.
You’ve been to Asia, is the new leader automatically accepted?
Will they want to see what he’s like first?
How do you think this plays out?

The Japanese love Celtic.
Japanese players have been great servants to Celtic.
Why waste it?
I remember once visiting Curitiba in 2010 and meeting 2 Japanese tourists with Nakamura hoops on.
What a night that turned out to be.
How will it play out?
Celtic will fuck it up.

Very Interesting Meander Around A Very Interesting Week MaHe,

It’s July, so time to get serious…

Firstly it does look like Jota’s going but many are talking of 25 mn or a Celtic record transfer.

Last week Jota was worth 15 mn, it is said the Saudis are prepared to pay 20 mn for him, that’s a great price.

Jota like other members of our current squad played in the UCL group stages last season, they were not good enough…

Fitness wise
Stamina wise
Little Experience
Poor Motivation
Lack of Commitment

Jota it has to be said was better than most but he didn’t cover himself in glory.

In September we are playing in the Champions League group stages, according to our manager we are taking Europe seriously this season.

That means if Jota was staying he would have had to have had the Brendan Rodgers treatment and be far better than he was last season.

We certainly do not have replacements of that calibre waiting in the wings, far from it, if anyone thinks we do please look up the potential teams we will be facing in the UCL in September.

Not only the giants in pot 1 & 2, look at who we will be facing and have to beat to get Europe after Christmas in pot 3.

That’s correct, by the end of August we need a first team capable of knocking out all of the following…

Shakhtar Donetsk
Red Bull Salzburg
AC Milan
Red Star Belgrade
Newcastle United
Real Sociedad

The idea that any of our current wingers or a wet behind the ears moneyball signing from the A-League is the answer to that conundrum is totally fanciful.

As regards not “hitting our peak earnings” this year, again I disagree.

Last time Brendan was here we hit record earnings, record profits, record squad value.

After he went that fell away of course, we had a resurgence under AP and we have yet to see last year’s figures but we certainly should be aiming to beat them this year.

Getting UCL ready first team players in during this window will not be cheap but we do have the money in the bank, we will be selling star players and get a dozen of our “first team” squad off the wage bill.

So very much fundable

We most certainly have the ability to place down our marker this season.

We most certainly won’t do that sitting on our bahookies waiting for fate…

Luckily enough our manager is the antithesis of that.

Hail Hail

Only bad news so far is that home jersey, like a photocopy of that hedge the hun ball ended up on at Alloa?. Window has only opened this morning so I’ll hang fire on whether jota leaving is a bad thing when I see his replacement. Long fitba free summer, ah well I think I’ll watch the month long tourism film that is the Tour de France.

For anyone that didn’t catch it.

Brendan Rodgers gave a good interview shortly after re-joining the club, playing 9 holes of golf at the T Golf Club in the Balearic Islands.

Brendan’s grip of the golf club might not be to the liking of the purists. It’s more suited to the Glens of Antrim and the ash of the hurley.

Worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.

The Gombeen Man

Thanks for your post this morning.

“…by the end of August we need a first team capable of knocking out all of the following…”

If we take the values provided by Transfermarket the Celtic squad is valued at €136m.

Clearly these figures are indicative only but they provide some idea of the quality of the squad.

Here’s a listing of the indicative values of the teams you listed in your post.

Shakhtar Donetsk. €165 m.

Red Bull Salzburg.     €254m

AC Milan.                    €516m

Lazio.                           €263m

Red Star Belgrade     €72m

Newcastle United.    €538m

Real Sociedad.           €366m

Celtic.                           €136m

Clearly there’s other factors involved, quality of the league, quality of coaching/tactics.

– Debt levels, scouting and budgets are key.

Building a team capable of knocking out all of the above (by August) from a self-financing, sustainable Scottish model isn’t quite at the level of the ‘loaves and fishes’ but it’s quite an ask.

Champions League football is a considerable demand on players. We are testing our squad to it’s limits.

Any result, any point won at this level of football is a considerable achievement.

Our situation in a poor league really does impact in results and performances at this level.

Self-financing and sustainability provides financial certainty and safety from the short-term, jam tomorrow mindset that killed Rangers.

Hopefully we have a puncher’s chance when the CL begins but ‘money talks’ in the modern game.

Sobering, I know but as the saying goes,

“It is what it is.”

Must run.

Keep up the good work guys.

As much as Jota going has come as a shock, I would like to think that the recruitment team have a replacement lined up . I wouldn’t have thought it was Abada and certainly not Tilio.
There could be more moving on , as Angecsaid. There are guys in that dressing room who won’t be here next season.
We need to get to work quickly with our recruitment

July 1, 2023 10:14 am

The Gombeen Man @ 8:51 a

Well as usual you make some very good points and you outline the challenge we face very well.

My take for the last decade has been Celtic needed an out of the box approach.

We seem to have found that with the AP to BR change.

This is what the UCL means….

Firstly getting to the UCL group stages, while there is undoubtedly disadvantages in operating in one of Europe’s medium leagues there is also advantages, Celtic are a giant club with easy access to the UCL group stages.

Many of our peers have shown us that there is great benefits to competing in the UCL Firstly in consistency, Clubs that play in the UCL season after season get better at performing at that level and get better results.

Secondly there is also the financial benefits, even medium size clubs that play consistently in the UCL get regular money from the UCL pot and add great value to their playing squad, doubling, trebling and more the transfer value of their players.

Thirdly you get a better coefficient, if you are a pot 3 side the chances are you will draw a pot 4 side that is beatable and give you a much better chance of Europe after Christmas

Fourthly Europe after Christmas gives you even more money plus you get more practice so you get better at the knock out stage of the competition – giving you a chance of playing in the last sixteen or better

Champions League football is a considerable demand on players. We are testing our squad to it’s limits.

Yes, so…

Fifthly you get the opportunity to attract and retain much better first team players, the prestige of European football as well as the domestic trophies and the salary bonuses a “winning” club can pay gives you huge clout – also much better chance of retaining quality youth players, we should be using the fringe players and youth prospects for Cup competitions.

Also the size of the Club and the history of the club counts, Brendan Rodgers came to Celtic as he was a fan as a boy – he knew what Celtic meant to his community, what are the chances of getting an ex-EPL top six manager, how many pot 3 sides have that.

For a decade we have been squirrelling away money, while other pot 3 clubs have been investing it in their teams – how many of those teams can buy 50 mn pounds worth of players from their current account and still have loads of money left and can save any money from player sales?

The Rangers got into the Europa final, beating pot two and three teams on the way with less resources than we have.

We need to develop a CAN DO ATTITUDE

Luckily we have just the manager for that and it seems the Board won’t stymie him this time.

Hail Hail

Juddy meets Leo Picchi, son of the ‘Le Grande Inter’ legend and team captain, Armando Picchi. There’s not many players that have a stadium named after them “The Armando Picchi Stadium” in Livorno, Italy.
He tells of how he lost his father at just two years of age and his contact with Bertie Auld, he remains an Ambassador for Inter Milan and its the trophy room in Milan where the interview takes place.

July 1, 2023 10:53 am

I actually share your optimism to an extent. Though it really depends on a couple of unknown unknowns-never a good thing.

We won’t know for another two months yet who we have in our squad-who is leaving and who we have signed. And we won’t know until a couple of weeks later who our CL opponents are.

I do though have every faith in our returning manager, and in the board to give him the backing so sadly lacking in his last three transfer windows first time around.

So,while my glasses might not be quite as rose-tinted as yours, they are of a similar shade. And if we have a squad good enough to compete in Europe,Scotland should take care of itself. Hopefully!

July 1, 2023 10:53 am

St tams @ 9:51 am,

Totally agree, mentioned Tetê as a possible replacement.

Don’t know much about him but it was rumoured we were looking at him, Brendan brought him to Leicester City in January and if he was impressed with the guy he has UCL experience.

Yet whomever we decide upon, he needs to be UCL ready.

Hail Hail

July 1, 2023 10:55 am

Good piece Mahe. Feel better.
The spine you mentioned does contain Hart as well but I think we need better.
In fact throughout the club the motto in everything should be ‘ what can we do better ?’
The strip ? Firing off the shelves in the Coatbridge shop.

July 1, 2023 10:58 am

Morning all! The read back of BAD’s comments was like eavesdropping on a phone call when you can only hear one side and you’re wondering wtf is going on. I feel as if I’ve missed out! 🤣🤣🤣

July 1, 2023 10:59 am

Tête looks like a decent player. Attacking mid,a regular in the Shakhtar Donetsk side since he was 19yo. But I think the only way that we can sign him is if UEFA extend the right of players in Russia and Ukraine to suspend their contract for another year.
