Saints and Sinners

We often despair about the state of Scottish football, and in any given week the different reasons why or who is to blame gets dissected.
Today offers another reason, or excuse, for those failing standards in the shape of our opposition manager.
It’s not that I loathe or hate the man, it’s just that I really don’t rate Craig Levein much if any, and it’s fair to say I shook my head upon his announcement to take over the Saints.
Ok, they won’t be the last club to come calling for an experienced manager when in or around the drop zone, Roy Hodgson is the classic example of this ‘phenomenon’ bearing fruit, but he’s showing much more than just firefighting relegation.
Levein on the other hand is just not a wise choice in my eyes.
He’s not well traveled, doesn’t strike me as a student of the game keeping abreast of modern methods, and there’s a reason he was out of work despite not being that old. Saint Johnstone have made the easy and lazy decision in hiring him, not the correct one I believe.
He’s not known for attacking football, today we shall see two banks of five sitting deep and no doubt the big men at the back coming up for corners and freekicks occasionally, hardly revolutionary, and I’d go so far as to label that dinosaur tactics in any top flight league were attacking rather than defending is generally more beneficial, and better received by that clubs support. Brighton being a great example, came up from the Championship and opted to have a go at other teams rather than sit back and fight for their lives. It’s actually the current trend down south,, Luton, Forest, Burnley and Bournemouth all play effective aggressive football, gone are the days of 11 men constantly behind the ball.
In the event of keeping his team up, Craig will of course expect to begin next season in the same dugout, he’s not a simple stopgap appointment having signed a long term deal. If they go down, he won’t be cultivating a good football philosophy to bring back into the SPL when the day comes. Not only that, his signings aren’t inspiring. Sure he plays youth team products, but won’t be targeting any specific foreign leagues seeking value bargains.
Recall what happened when Romanov at Hearts drafted a ton of Eastern Bloc footballers? They were in serious contention to win the bloody league until the aforementioned decided he was de-facto manager by picking the team making Burley walk away whilst at the summit, that’s honourable I must admit.
Recently Japan has been fruitful for the Champions, for very reasonable player fees.
Yet which smart Chairman or CEO has cottoned onto the fact these two markets provide value players and should be exploited?
The J-Leagues MVP was signed for 750k or so, you can’t tell me he wouldn’t enhance most SPL sides, but he was acquired by the one that doesn’t need him rather than an adventurous other.
Watch where Leveins spend goes, journeymen who might know the league but have never shone or excelled in said league. He should be going far abroad, taking a million to Japan or Slovakia or Ukraine, and coming home with three actual players to light the place up.
I guess it’s the classic chicken and egg scenario, a new manager trying to play actual footballers and entertaining the home support. I often wonder why Chairmen don’t opt for an attack minded manager knowing that it would probably raise interest and attendance levels, but would an old fashioned Chairman actually hire a manager who walks in and says I want to sign cheap foreigners and have a good go at the other teams?
Nah, I’ll pass son and hire the safe pair of hands who’s been around the block and who won’t upset the dressing room with a new clique. And the lowly cycle begins again.
Naismith at Hearts was similarly cheap and lazy, Barry Robson had to earn his position which isnt cheap and lazy, and thankfully Hibs are thinking outside the box with their last two appointments.
The manager currently sitting in third place is a young man with a ton of playing experience and someone out to make a name for himself, not a lazy appointment.
Outwith Celtic, he and Barry are tied for the best managers in the league at the moment, so anyone looking at the situation rationally would stray away from an old school Craig Levein, the young guns are in the ascendancy, and clearly more suited to the modern player.
And modern tactics.
It shall also intriguing to see who emerges with the points when those two young guns clash come Sunday afternoon, though Aberdeen might be jaded I doubt many caught the cold midweek, the polar bears move from Aberdeen to Helsinki to catch a break. After all it was ‘warm enough’ over there for 3 local fans to go shirtless for the entire game, I’ve never witnessed that spectacle in late November at Pittodrie.
We should be happy everytime one of these lazy appointments gets beaten, and really smile when they are hammered, hopefully starting Sunday by showing the Saints board they are actually sinners, going against the modern day trend, hopefully just going down so we don’t have to look at him and the board learn a lesson.
Put them to the sword Celtic, please.

Craig Levein is the very epitome of what is currently wrong with the Scottish football environment.
In his case turgid, negative, boring football reflects his personality.

A true dinosaur with whom the game up here is going nowhere.
What can his charges learn about the “ beautiful game” from a guy who has won nothing in the game as player or manager. A true dud.

And he’s not the only one. An SFA shill who like the feckless suits is on the self serving merry go round taking what he can and giving nowt.

Jim the Tim- don’t know who that is but happy birthday anyway! Shared with my three year old grandson.

Good points from each of you there. I expect another ten men behind the ball borefest-unless we score early.

Might actually be a game for DT,who at least isn’t scared of a strike from distance.

Many thanks, will pass on the best wishes!

Palma back, give Oh a run, Kyogo in place of any winger who all cut inside anyway. DT, not his biggest fan but top scorer, as you say takes the occasional pop and deserves a start, so why not?

Craig Levein and Amy Irons host a show called Sacked in the Morning.

It can be funny at times but Craig is no quick witted comedian although Amy Irons is better looking.

Craig of course is remembered for his rant ” it’s all about Rangers” after his team Dundee Utd were on the receiving end of some outrageous decisions by referee Mike McCurry.

Hit with a big fine for his rant and appointed Scotland manager a year later!
I remember him more for his 4-6-0 tactical masterclass v Czechs.

A complete dud.

CHAIRBHOY ( From previous blogs )

We had a chat a few days ago about my assertion that Brendan Rodgers signs off on all transfers. I trawled through umpteen boring pressers and I did not find the quote, so I must have dreamt I heard it.
You were correct and I was wrong. Here’s the nearest thing I could find.

We also chatted about Rodgers getting an easy ride from softball or mealymouthed journalist questions.
Here’s some Spanish journalists asking Simeone more penetrative questions after the 2-2 draw with Celtic .( from 5 minutes in to 10 minutes ). Then the groveling Scottish journalists get their chance.

To summarize from memory, Simeone was asked:

Why was your first half performance not as good as your second?
Why did you give the opposition so much time to play?
Why did Riquelme ( left back ) not play from the start? ( the lad he replaced was excoriated in the Madrid press for allowing Kyogo and Palma to score )
Celtic haven’t won in 23 Group Stage games ( we actually won 2 ) and have struggled to score in all of them. Why didn’t you do better than you did?

Simeone dealt with all the questions with aplomb. Just makes me wonder why Rodgers is not asked anything more direct or incisive than “Any injuries to report?
