To Coin A Phrase

The only show in town at the moment is the continuing saga of the January transfer window which ends tonight. And it would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic.

Celtic went into the window still needing pretty much what we required in the summer. A replacement for Joe Hart in goal-one who could be phased in as Joe was phased out,all the while benefitting from Joe’s experience and advice. Another left back, someone with a bit more presence than Greg Taylor. Taylor has regularly been one of our better performers these last few seasons and is usually up to what the SPL can throw at him,but there is little doubt that his lack of pace and height catches him out against the better teams, such as in Europe. Or any side with pace on his side which can hit on the counter.

A big hard bastert in midfield, capable of reading the game, winning the tackles and distributing the ball. Lord knows,we’ve been missing someone like this for far too long now,and our midfield is regularly outmuscled as a result.

A capable deputy for Kyogo, who is being expected to carry way too much of a workload on his slender-and fragile-shoulders.

It’s not a lot to ask for,one from each department. But to be honest,we have been crying out for these positions to be filled since summer-at least!!! We didn’t replace G-Mak last season, instead trying a punt on a 21yo from South Korea. He’s willing and able, but he hasn’t yet come up to scratch. In fact,he would benefit greatly from a loan elsewhere, somewhere that he could play every week and find that fitness and goalscoring touch that attracted us to him in the first place. Being a bit player clearly doesn’t suit him. But he can’t be allowed to leave while he is the only alternative to Kyogo.

On top of that,we lost four players to the Asian Cup,who won’t be available to us for another fortnight at least. Hatate for more than that,as he has suffered another injury.

So plenty to be getting on with, and from the day the window opened. Instead, here we are on the day it closes-and what have we got. We’ve got an awful feeling of Deja Vu,is what. Except an even emptier one than normal, almost as if someone was trying to prove a point, almost as if there was a new sheriff in town. Except that there isn’t,he was only taking a short sabbatical.

First of all we signed Kuhn,a winger from Rapid Vienna. In nearly forty years of dealings with that club,we have learned nothing. They signed him for €500k on the strength of a short loan spell at a Bundesliga 2 club, which yielded THREE goals in 27 games. At lower level! His five in 36 in his 18 months in Austria is no great improvement, yet we saw fit to cough for €3m. Terrific. Underwhelming doesn’t do it justice. On top of that,it seems that he has permanent toothache and has yet to even make the bench. A grifter who makes Boerrigter look like a grafter? Jury is out,and needing a lot of convincing.

Next, earlier in the week-has he been officially announced yet?-comes Adam Idah. Who he,you might ask? I know I did. Also 23yo,he has been playing down south for Norwich. Mostly in The Championship, doncha know. Norwich are a fairly decent side at that level. Yet this striker has scored a grand total of TWELVE goals in 99 league matches and 17/115 in total for them. Admittedly his 22 caps for Ireland have yielded three goals, but two of them were against Gibraltar and New Zealand. Again,a yet to be convinced jury.

So what the actual is going on at the club? I won’t bore you again with how money-oriented they have proven to be over the years, nor with the details on how the financial rewards from Europe will be the biggest ever for the winners of the SPL. Not even with the question of why a money-oriented outfit aren’t only seemingly unconcerned with losing out on a windfall of around £60m,but are seemingly hell-bent on handing that amount to our greatest rivals.

For a £120m difference in respective incomes in one season alone-which those rivals will use to consolidate their position and do the same the following year. But I’ll leave you with this, from Nils Pratley in The Guardian, discussing the dismissal in court of Elon Musk’s ludicrous bonus structure as agreed by board members at Tesla.

“”When seeking directors, CEOs don’t look for pit bulls. It’s the cocker spaniel that gets taken home,” another rich man, Warren Buffett, said a few years ago. Absolutely right. The job of independent director is meant to be about representing the interests of all shareholders. If you can’t act independently, you should not be there. Do not behave like members of a cult, which is roughly what happened at Tesla.”

He and The Sage of Omaha could have been referring to the board at Celtic Plc,not Tesla. An organisation for which the terms cronyism and nepotism have become bywords. In fact, they could have been coined for our board,as could Buffet’s comments above. <><><><><><><>

Good news, folks! We’ve finally stopped the procrastinating and cleared the obstacles,so we can now proudly go ahead with The Sentinel Celts Charity Drive.

The plan is to nominate a charity which we can all donate to as and when each of us have funds available to do so. CHALMERSBHOY has already managed over £200 via the winners of his monthly £10 charity bet from the SC Naps Competition, and will continue to do this. We also have the three big racing festivals at Cheltenham,Aintree and Royal Ascot where we will ask for voluntary donations to enter.

We have had two weeks to nominate our chosen charities, and the lucky winner will be the benefactor of our generosity for the next six months.

From Jan 25-31 I will list the nominated charities, and everyone who contributes to the site can vote on them, with the winner announced on Feb 1st. They are-

MacMillan Cancer Care (2)

The latest additions to the roster are Blood Cancer UK (3)

MS Society Scotland (1)
Scottish Charity Air Ambulance

Transverse Myelitis UK (1)

The Halliday Foundation (1)

St. Margaret’s Hospice (2)

Trussell Trust Scotland (1)

So it is my pleasure to announce that the winning charity, which will be the beneficiary of Sentinel Celts charity initiatives for the next six months is…

Blood Cancer UK

Lots to discuss although I fear you are muddying the waters with some hobby horsing.

GK — the longer we wait the bigger the change required.
BS seems to have not settled in and he leaves a big hole in out plans.

LB / GT — I think you are being very generous.
Some of his play against all levels of opposition has been tragic in the extreme.
He can start with a good 25 minutes play against anybody / everybody then collapse to extreme levels.
An ability to stop a cross is missing to a comedy capers extent.
Not good.

M/F changes — the player you might want is now in getting some polishing in Paisley.
However — and it is a huge however — all of this will come to nothing if we don’t address the issue that is CMcG.
Keeping him in the team means we have less ability to make changes.
Unless we change formation — move to 4-5-1 rather than 4-3-3 — which would apoear unlikely given our one big spend was on a winger.

N-GK — not our first rodeo paying strangely big money for a talented player with a chequered past.
From memory he has played some minutes for us but not sure he is a nailed on starter.
Currently we have DM / LP / LA in the mix for that role plus MJ / MT — has bitten the dust so not now in the mix / satellite delay to the South China Sea is my excuse — what a waste / YHj as developing talent.

Paying £3mill for someone to fight for a place with a fast improving YHj is not my idea of goid business.
Has all the hallmarks of a PL special — paying over the odds for talent that may or may not have a pet agent with PL’s number in his favourites section.

I wonder if the mythical £60k figure was part of the deal. Might have gone up to £80K now with the $ exchange rate being so low.

Old wives never go away they just get updated.

As for GG — get over it.
He wanted bigger money than we were prepared to pay.
Second string so there were limits.

His performance levels when dealing with this seaons stodge would have been interesting to guage his ability.

Overall — we are a shambles at the moment.
BR seems to be in denial with the state of the club.
He must ne shocked at where we are as a fully functioning football club.

They have locked Cinderella in tha attic and the only potential players are Ugly Sisters spec and worse.

Irish bench warmer from NFN land is a *iss take cooked up on a golf course far far away.

They are trolling us now.

Meanwhile OF PLC plan their next move.

February 1, 2024 3:27 am

Can we run a book on what will be said after the transfer windo closes?

Sort of buzzword bingo for excuses — I fear given our history shooting fish in a barrel would be more challenging.

It is the hope that gets you in the end.

Pit pony syndrome — seen the light with AP so still hoping for the same after he has left.

PL in charge / DD doing the odd 9 holes — no chance.

Morning all,

Wee donation made to a very worthy Charity, Blood Cancer UK.

A bit disappointed that there were so few votes posted as both Bobby and Mahe put a lot of work and effort in. Plus, over the year Chalmersbhoy and others have donated their own money for Competition prizes, and I think more people on here, could have taken the voting more seriously.
However, only my opinion.

Might have taken us 4 weeks to wake up but things are happening now …

DT — away for real money / £2mill or so.
Hope he gets a lot of games and kicks on.
The NT need his playmaking abilities.
Didn’t grow with us — need to ask why?
Squad standards / attitudes would appear to be poor or at least a bit mixed.

MT — away back to Aus on loan to MeC.
Small favour to the City Group?
Something badly wrong in all of this.
Are we the only people who can’t see his talent?
Or as an AP buy — BR needs time to think this through?
Whatever — very poor squad management.

AI — loan deal coming in.
NT stalwatr but third choice for an ECh team stuck in mid table.
Not one for big CL nights at P/ head then …

State of play by Feb 2nd?

Wide/Attack- Kuhn recruited.
Another forward option sought -on loan?
JF and MJ drop out of an injury free match day 20:

Hart, Bain

Calmac, MoR, Bernardo, Reo, Odin.

Kyogo, Oh, Maeda,Palma, Yang, Abada, Kuhn

Sitting in the stand in reserve –
SW, GL, AB, DT, TI, JF, MJ, on loan striker.
A couple of youngsters like Frame and Kelly as further backup.

Certainly not the quality of squad you’d want to see in the CL. But we probably will.
Gambling on the above to be enough to win the league. Capable of raising their game when it matters but equally able to plumb the depths against well organised, limited opponents or dross in the main.

Unless the Huns go large in these final transfer window hours I’d assess our league chances at 55/45 in our favour.
The slightly better of two very average squads.

We’ve played a blinder again.

I think you are an optimist.
The SPL is now a crap shoot.
50.5% to 49.5% to us.

Better to be 2 points ahead than 2 behind.

Everything being set up for the first team to lose points to lose the league — well 80% chance of that outcome.

Good point about the money situation.

We are player traders at heart no matter what resources we have in the bank.

There’s much I agree with in the article BMCUWPS.

There are issues around transparency, oversight and the suspicion of nepotism in many aspects of the club.

I’ve mentioned before about a lack of clarity in the accounts. That mythical £72m is spent or allocated. Are we confident that the transfer budget is sufficient?

Hopefully everyone is on the same page and wants to see the best Celtic team possible on the park without overspending?

Ange is clearly a great guy.

How many of our better buys over the last few seasons do we think Ange identified?

Clearly all of the first wave of Asian players – Kyoto , Hatate, Maeda. Certainly, Mooy too.

But Jota, O’Reilly, JJ, GG, Alistair J, Abada (?), CVC? Hart.

Maybe he did identify all of them?

Or is there evidence of a recruitment department operating effectively?

Bernardo? Nawrocki? Palma? To a lesser extent Yang, Holm? Lagerbielke (signed as a result of a CB crisis but still Swedish Defender of the year, last season. Wanted in Italy.)

Kwon? Jury’s out I know.

I’d honestly like to know who identified these players.

Perhaps we haven’t hit the heights of earlier windows. But i’ve a feeling that the issue goes beyond recruitment.

I watched Callum McGregor’s interview at the weekend where he mentioned the word ‘togetherness’ about half a dozen times.

He didn’t look right to me. I’ll link the clip below.

Adam Idah has a slightly lower goals per minute ratio as Kyogo’s in the SPFL this season. I’d venture that the Championship is a higher standard than most SPFL games we play.

By my reckoning Brendan has seen Adam Idah actually play in the flesh v Leicester for 11 mins (+ET).

Adam came off the bench after 79 minutes to replace Billy Gilmour in a 2-1 victory for Leicester, on 28th August 2021.

Brendan would have the benefit of scouting reports and possibly watched him in play against other opposition (including ROI).

– Yes, who knows who is the decision maker in the deal.

If we are going to sign players from England, the average EPL salary is about £3m a year. With image rights etc on top. As you go down the league, salaries fall – it’s about getting guys to leave that the league.

The Championship was always a better bet for players. The players in clubs fighting for promotion would be harder to shift.

I gather we are possibly signing a left back as cover from PSG. He’s in his 30s and in the last six months of his contract. He’s not a regular starter. He’s played once this season.

Previously we’d be targetting players who were (in the main) first team starters.
Change is always a difficult thing to negotiate. Especially when we are in the dark and have no reliable information about what’s going on.

It really would be interesting to know what kind of a budget Brendan was given, what players were recommended.

And who made the decisions in regards to actual signings?

All the best to whoever signs for the club.

Leicester City v Norwich City, 11 May 2022 – 11v11 match report

Adam not involved.

Norwich City v Leicester City,

Adam Idah replaced Billy Gilmour, 79 minutes.

Norwich City v Leicester City, 28 February 2020 – 11v11 match report

On bench. Not used.

Adam not involved.

Leicester City v Norwich City, 14 December 2019 – 11v11 match report

Callum McGregor’s interview, “Togetherness.’

Hopefully Brendan will provide clarity and vision in his next press conference.

I’m sorry to see Barry Robson go. He provided memorable moments in the hoops. It’s a shame he’s not available for that midfield.

Have a great day.

Thanks for the response. Talk to you at another time.

BMCUW @ 9.56

A lot of your stuff I agree with.
However some comes across as low rent hobby horsing.

GG is history — I hope you can get over it in time.
The bigger question is how he would have coped with our stodgy play this season.

Proper DM — something or someone we desperately need.
However it is only one part of the full MF revamp we desperately need.
And to me that means CMcG becoming a squad player.

Wrong side of 30 / poor season so far / more competition playing at 10.
Any big changes in the MF and to me he would be the loser.

Pivot / DM — we have better in TI and the newly invigorated Paisley Panda on our books already.

And then would come the work required to make MOR a full time superstar rather than the patchy / episodic one we have at the moment.

So much talent in the MF but TFOD2.1 apart we play stodge all too often.
Change is needed.

February 1, 2024 10:27 am

BMCUW @ part 2

GT — your somewhat positive comments need a counterpoint.
He is is not a top rank SPL LB / he is poor defensively / he is off form / he drifts out of games when times are tough.

Consequently we need a real / proper LB — not a Killie MF’er who got lucky slumming it in defence.

February 1, 2024 10:31 am

As an example…

I’m well aware that G-Mak is gone, and the reasons why. And I’ve said plenty of times that I’m not in favour of keeping an unhappy player who has stated that he wants to leave.

The point I made-which you have typically ignored-is our failure to have an adequate replacement lined up,despite over FIFTEEN months and three windows to do so.

February 1, 2024 10:44 am

Every pantomime season aka The Transfer Window I am reminded of this scene from Mars Attack in which Jack Nicholson plays the support at large and The Martians play The Board.

The outlier was when AP arrived and PL was absent but from 2009 I’d say the scene is indicative of the windows since.

I agree with your newest comments — just a case that they weren’t in todays article.
My thoughts are that OHg deserves more game time.
Good footballer needing more striking practice.

KF is currently struggling with the slow stodge the rest of the team are playing.
In addition he has become a bit Hollywood after he got his CL goal.

GG got his opportunity because KF got injured and was out for sometime.
OHg has never had the same opportunity.

All points to an unsettled squad at the moment.
BR 23 is not the all action BR of 2016.
Shame really.

With January transfer window activity seemingly slow across Europe ‘Shirley’ now would be the time to splash the cash, as much as our parsimonious board would grudgingly allow that is, and pick up a 1st team ready player or 2. There must be opportunities for clubs with cash to sign a decent player in a moribund market without having to worry about being gazumped by others. Fairly sure there are clubs out there who want to sell and reduce headcount and decent players who want to leave and given the scarcity of potential suitors this window would have considered a move to Glasgow, BUT were we really looking?

February 1, 2024 11:55 am

Allegedly Wolves knock back Celtic ‘loan bid’ for left back Hugo Bueno. Also being reported that it looks unlikely a move for PSG’s left back Layvin Kurzawa is a possibility for Celtic.🤔

February 1, 2024 1:01 pm

How many years ago was it Neil Lennon told Dermot Despot you’ve sold all my best players and replaced them with shite. Seems BR is due to have a similar conversation. Two windows in and this is what he’s dealing with:
Out In
Starfelt. Lagerbielke
Mooy Kwon, Holm
Jota. Yang, Kuhn, Palma
Add to that the signing of Idah and we are in the poundstretcher bargain bucket. Honestly get this scouting team so far to F…
Celtic must be the only club where incompetence is rewarded on a repeat basis.
I said around Christmas no one will ever tell me that we are not actually cheating to help this Huns team win the league. I stand by that and nothing that happens before the window closes will convince me differently. I am astounded that BR is still there. He is finished in football at any serious level if he doesn’t win this league and he is letting The Lawwell’s, Strachan’s and Desmond’s risk his future career. It defies belief or explanation.

So we’re sitting on a cash pile of approx 70m yet we can’t find a left back or a centre forward who is capable of making the current Celtic first team.

Across the whole of Europe there are no players who fit this profile.

Even though clubs are desperate to comply with FSR.

I find that hard to believe.

February 1, 2024 2:12 pm

Next home game is Kilmarnock on 17th Feb. If we go into that game have dropped points at ether Pittodrie or Easter Road, then the atmosphere in the stadium will be toxic, to say the least.

The suits got a taste of what’s to come towards the end of the Hearts home defeat. They ‘aint seen nothing yet.

From a position of unprecedented financial strength, the club appears completely paralysed at the moment. Unable to recruit a single player, in any position, who would go straight into the starting eleven and make the team better. Not one.

Beggars belief.

Afternoon all…a return to the Dark Days of Lawell conducting transfer business. Who knows what Strachan’s boy brings to the table but he sure as hell isn’t signing any cheques. Who has final say on targets – Lawell, I really doubt it but it seems so. Nicholson, have his cojones shrunk so far inside him he’s incapable of standing up for his Executive position, and for himself FFS! What about our Chief Finance Director, no input into matters not directly his concern? Or does it all come back to the Despicable Mr Desmond?
Who really knows what’s going on at the moment, we’re a disgrace and must be a laughing stock in fitba at the moment.

Real Madrid have announced a new sponsorship deal, which will see them wear HP patches on their sleeves …. for about $70 per season.

This is on top of the $125 million they get per season for wearing Adidas kits and the $75 million they get from main jersey sponsor Fly Emirates!

With the renovations/expansion to their stadium set to be completed (including hosting 2 Taylor Swift concerts) soon, Real are projecting to exceed $1 billion in revenue next season.

Obviously, impossible for Celtic to compete with that sort of spending, but it means that small teams like Celtic have to do better in other areas, like coaching, recruiting to make up ground where they can….

Junior hasn’t set the heather on fire in his job , we spend more time trying to get shot of the dross that’s milking the club of bench warmers , last year was the same , we jettisoned half a dozen players to free up wages and then junior brought in more surplus to requirements players who we are trying to get rid of this window , more interest getting rid of bad buys than getting the quality in that will maybe win us the league , the Approx 50-60 million ,and stops us giving them a hand up . IMHO we didn’t take them down when the alleged bonus envelopes were being dished around and now we’re sitting back with all to play for to set us well above them doing nothing to secure the title and the rewards .
