The Choke Hold

On Tuesday I cautioned against getting too carried away after the results at the weekend saw us in a clear lead at the top of the table. R2ngers might have been four points behind us in the table, but they had a game in hand and besides,it was far too early for us to be celebrating anything yet. There are still five league matches left for both sides after the split, and our form has hardly been a model of consistency.

After last night’s result, where they dropped another two points in their long-awaited encounter in Dundee,I’ll argue that my point is still valid. We simply aren’t showing the form of champions, not yet and certainly not to the extent that says that we now have a gimme for the title. We are not yet in that good place that sides find when they are steamrolling their way to an inevitable success. But dare I say that we are in a better place than our rivals?

I’d venture that they are actually not even in a better place than they were under Beale, simply because they went all-in on winning this title during the summer and added to their financial worries in January. They saw the opportunity that the new enlarged return from the Champions League offered-thought to be in the region of £60m-and saw the difference that would make if they got their hands on it instead of us. It would in fact alter the balance of power between us,offering them some medium term stability and their favourite toy,the fabled warchest.

R2ngers spent heavily in the summer by backing Beale. They spent heavily again in the autumn by  sacking Beale. They then spent again in winter by backing their new guy Clement. Indeed,at each stage they have outspent us as they work feverishly to ensure the trophy is bedecked in their colours on May 18th. (That 18-05 to the hard of thinking bluenose is a date, not the kick-off time!)

None though have worked harder than their legendary not-so-secret weapon, the MIBs. They must be spitting feathers looking at that table this morning, and will be feverishly drawing up arrangements to put their favourites back at the top. Last night was a case in point. Another one. Don Robertson had a clear view of an incident where John Souttar quite clearly handled the ball. It hit his outstretched arm, then his body. As if that were not enough,he then trapped the ball between arm and body before booting it clear. Verdict? No award whatsoever. Well.of course I was shocked! Not. A disgraceful decision, but hardly a new one.

The possibility remains that it was outside the area,so no penalty. The possibility that it was not an offence at all exists only in Scotland, and in R2ngers matches in particular. We have seen in the eighteen months since the introduction of VAR how it can be weaponised to bring any desired result, and last night was just another example. Indeed, there was no VAR check on the incident at all!

Steven McLean was in charge of the VAR. The man who rose to prominence because of THAT non-penalty decision a decade ago, then seemed to be everywhere. And then, for a good few seasons,he dropped right out of the picture. An occasional role as fourth official but rarely the man in the middle,in the limelight for the big occasion. Come the introduction of the new technology and all of a sudden he is Mr Ubiquitous. He’s been the ref or VAR chief at more games involving us or them than most season ticket holders. I doubt this is purely coincidental either. Refereeing appointments for us and them seem to be even more carefully managed than before,to ensure that they have the committed type in charge. Possibly the last charge for some of them too,if Celtic and the other clubs with serious misgivings about the system can force the SFA to adopt the Turkish example of using foreign based VAR officials.

Personally I’d go further and only use foreign officials in every part of the refereeing set-up. Why not-Turkey appointed Hugh Dallas to head up their referees! I’d also sack every Grade One or Two official and employ foreign refs to train up replacements for five years. Under strict scrutiny. It might not work, but we know the current system definitely won’t.

But back to the title chase. Talk had recently turned in various media outlets to which side had the bottle for it. Which side could handle the pressure. That chatter seemed to take off when BR had his say about the officials after the Tynecastle match, with suggestions that we were crumbling and looking about for excuses. Not at all,it was a carefully crafted hit at just the right time, highlighting at last the inequities in the game up here. Recent results for the Ibrox outfit have, however, piled the pressure onto their latest manager-and he has retreated into the Handy Little Book of Clichéd Excuses to make his case. He’s tried the everybody hates us,we don’t care siege mentality. He’s tried the injuries angle. The simple bad luck angle. Hell,he’s even gone after one or two of the officials, biting the hands that feed. Last night it was all the fault of Dundee for having the temerity, the audacity,to come out and make a game of it.

It seems that he wants new rules adopted. Ones where opposition players aren’t allowed to tackle, score a goal-or even be close enough to the play to do so. He spoke about opposition players man marking, even “following them to the toilet.” You know the kind of things that teams do to get a result,we all do. Clement thinks it shouldn’t be allowed! Well, there’s a lot of things I don’t think should be allowed in Scottish football, but in sixty years I’ve yet to get my wish to see it officiated fairly and in accordance with the laws and the regulations.

Last night’s result was definitely a good one for us,and I won’t deny that. We each have five games left, all against the same opponents. We are three points ahead. We have them to play at home along with Hearts and St Mirren, and are away to Dundee and Kilmarnock. Their fixtures are the reverse of ours. I’d much rather be in our position than theirs. That doesn’t mean that I’m breaking out the champagne yet,and I don’t think any of us should be. I’ll still quite happily wait until the fat lady sings. She’s not even started her warm-up yet. But she might be readying a gargle in preparation for it.

Match/ better their results in the next two games and put them to the sword at Celtic Park.

At that point a slip at Killie won’t stop us, although given where we are now, compared to Rugby Park last December, we have nothing to fear. No og Philips, or a front three of MJ Oh and Palma.

We are stronger in all outfield positions, and focus and strong leadership gets us there.

If third placed Hearts actually decide to play like teams in 6th and 11th against their cousins and not accommodating, whimpering easy beats the Huns season could fall off a cliff on Sunday and the fallout will be very amusing.

They are raging enough as it is.

This league is there to be won.

That’s a lot of cup finals,mate-but we’ve grown used to them over the years. Keep the heid,as we say in Scotland, and we win the double-succumb to the pressure or the mibbery and we won’t.

Last night Ludge MIB / Ludge VAR did there jobs over the non award of the penalty.
However they threw Ludge Media under the bus as they had no way of excusing the non award.
His hand / arm was extending his silhouette / making himself bigger when he touched the ball.
Consequently we need to push the point — they are being reffed differently from everyone else.
And we need to push the point that we are being reffed differently as well.

They get decisions in their favour — there for all to see.
We get decisions given against us that nobody else would be penalised for — need to highlight it and then some.

As for the 5 games coming up — every one will be very difficult.
The SPL has worked out that we are not firing on all cylinders and Govan FC are on the slide as the new guy bounce diminishes and their lack of talent is there for all to see.

Team SPL seem to have worked out that an all action MF makes them competitive in today’s league.
We really need to up our game to neutralise this set of tactics — waiting for worldie is not cutting it now.

Game on Saturday showed it.

45 minutes of stodge and we were lucky to get nil.
45 minutes of MF effort / good crosses and we got the goals.

Nightmares of 2005 / 2009 / 2011 still haunt me.
We have been pole position going into the last 5 games and still lost it.
3 points ahead is better than 2 points behind but we have been very lumpy this season.

In ‘05/ ‘09/ an ‘11 we faced a much superior quality of rival. A totally irrelevant comment.

We are improving- stop n start – but clearly scoring. Since our 1- 1 at home to Killie in February we have scored 7 v Dundee and 3 in five games against various.

We are at our best when at our boldest.

Negative outlook isn’t healthy for your general wellbeing.

all we need is for the Hun to draw either away to St.Mirren or home to Killie and we can win the league against them at home.

JS @ 9.53

Not quite how I see it — we have been very poor at times this season.
Lucky for us they have been worse and now the SPL is starting to notice.

Good to have the SCSF up first — free hit regarding our form and our winning attitude.
Hopefully we show some desire / talent and put on a good performance.
That would set us up nicely for the SPL run in.

However our form has been very lumpy / patchy this season.
All 5 SPL games will be tough gigs — the opposition x 4 are growing in confidence plus we have Ludge MIB / Ludge VAR to deal with.

The league is ours to lose even if the bookies now have us as heavy favourites..
However we have done it before and we are some way off our best at the moment.
It will be a wee while before I start counting chickens.
Our form especially our MF has been poor.

MOR needs to turn up.
TI needs to switch on.
RH just needs time.

Plus CMcG is in pre season mode just now.
And PB still is looking for his best position.

Everything now is a big game.

A good summary of our midfield currently.

Pleasingly though, across the city they have to pick three from Lungestrum, Lawrence, Silva, Raskin and Dowell. Not one of those would get a seat on our bench!

I’d struggle to recognise some of these guys in the local supermarket. 😂

There are 13 points separating 2nd and 3rd place in the league. R2ngers have enjoyed the benefit of 5 (at least) match winning decisions. Without the :honest mistakes” they’d be in a battle with Hearts.

It astonishes me that the other clubs just accept this.

April 18, 2024 12:17 pm

Morning all!!
The cheating has been off the scale this season. I doubt there’s a way to accurately measure how the League has been manipulated to suit that mob. From the blatant non-award of penalties, the blatant refusal to look at stuff which we expect to be routine, the one-inch thick offside lines that show absolutely nothing relevant to broken cameras or cameras facing the wrong way. Then factor in games being re-refereed, not CLEAR AND OBVIOUS errors but a VAR deciding, IN HIS OPINION, that a ref should’ve called something differently and instructs him to change his decision. And, finally, the wee fouls and tugs, the everyday stuff, stuff that would be accepted as part and parcel of the game that are now judged differently for different teams depending on who they’re playing and where.
There’s an incalculable amount of evidence around this season’s games alone that point to one single team being punished more than others and one team benefitting more than the rest. We all see it, Brendan saw it and called it.
But here’s the thing, despite all their assistance they’re just not a very good team. They’ve had the same backbone of a squad for a few years now and are no better than they were 6 years ago. We’ve had a helluva amount of injuries this season, and a new manager, and new signings – just as they have. We’ve had zero assistance form the refs, the exact opposite, in fact and we’re at the top of the League ON MERIT.
Comparisons to the situations in previous years are as relevant as our biggest rivals back then; deid, gone, an ex-fitba club. The new version is not the old version. They are a pastiche. A Vaudeville act of the old Gers. And they’re just not very good at it. My inspiration to post this was the idea we USED to be subservient to this mob, they knew our place, we knew our place. We were always regarded as the poor immigrants – we still are to a degree – but the demise of the original Huns put us in a place of seniority and ascendancy and we should remind them every time who we are and how we got here.
So, let’s be confident that this League is ours. They are shite and they know they are. We are hitting form at exactly the right time and they know we are. At no point has our bottle gone but theirs has and we know it. Big Phillipe Flop (@BAD😁) has lost the plot big time and they know it. Tavernier’s bottle has crashed, I think there’s only 4 blue bottles hanging on the wall now, and they know it.
Come on Celtic, this League is ours, just do what needs to be done and feck them all! All the half full glasses, all the worries about Sima, Silva, Diomande being world beaters have all amounted to this closing series of games. They closed the gap while we were treating the wounded and their placemen were awarding penalties. We’ve reopened the gap, unfortunately not to the 8 points we had but who at this point would be surprised if that’s how the table looked after the next 5 games? Not me, mate, not me!!

I wouldn’t underestimate the return of injury victims and form to likes of AJ at exactly the right time for us. Added to that the goals that Idah is contributing are vital.

I’ve said all season we are the better of two average teams. The Huns failings masked by brotherly help.

We are miles away from a CL competing team but way ahead of a dying on their feet Hun team.

April 18, 2024 1:09 pm

Yup, yup, yup

Agree with all of the posts but we shouldn’t get to far ahead of ourselves. Mibbery will need cranking up. It was very evident again last night.

They may be shite but have appeared in two European cup finals since we have.

We as a club need to address the cheating still. It’s not going anywhere and there’s no time like the present.

The PLC instinctively desired a permanently financially hampered Old Firm partner but look where that’s got us;

Malicious prosecutions.
An overtly rigged league.
Overtly rigged fixture schedule.
A league without away fans in attendance.
A totally dysfunctional VAR implementation.( At a time when it should have been used to encourage the technology. Their cheating done the absolute opposite. To the extent even tims were fooled. Not difficult.)
A fractious relationship with potential advertisers.
A media that has went from being hostile to Celtic to being a propaganda tool to prop up the old firm myth.
Staff and players and fans safety at no go Ibrox.

There’s more I’m sure…

It’s not worth it.

Now I’m aware the Beale spend will not results in increased player trading for them and that in comparison we haven’t spent much. That we will probably return better financial figures than they will again this financial year and that they have to address the Hummel issue which may be costly.

But …. It’s time to call it out. It’s destroying the product. We can’t ignore their malign influence anymore. If the PLC will not do it. Then who will ?

As it’s only going to get worse by turning a blind eye and pontificating in the long run it doesn’t matter. Maybe not to the bottom line but to the national game it’s a fucking disgrace.

Awe Naw…I think we all know the answers to your q’s. The PLC will do nowt, whether they are stifled by the 5WA or by the nature of the SFA/SPFL rules prohibiting action against the organisation or its members or its just they are inherently, personally and collectively, impotent. Who knows the reasons, you say it’s to preserve the ‘Old Firm’. I’m not sure, there’s too much of it is too Conspiracy Theorist for me. That’s not to exclude it, I’d just like a bit more hard, real evidence of it.
In the meantime, though, it is incumbent on Brendan and his team to deliver results with no outside influence, either from the Board or from the SFA/SPFL.
Incidentally, your stated fact they’ve been to 2 Euro finals is a misnomer. They’ve reached one and the deid club reached four, (I think). Unless, of course you want to accept their cheating and the Same Club Fairytale!!

In the longer term, let’s see if the Referee Resolution has legs. Who knows, maybe that could turn out to be a force for good, something that forces change.

IQ4…your Underground post reminded me you had been talking about the Pollok Inn. Not one I was ever in, to my memory, but I used to have a beer in the Cavendish and or the Royal Oak at Nitshill, about 40 years ago. My pal and I played 5s in Barrhead on a Wednesday and as he was from Nitsy we would go there for a pint after. Sometimes we would go to the Cart, on Corkerhill Road. Every one of these pubs had the same vibe. Every time we went in, the piano player would stop playing, the guys who were hitting each other with chairs would stop for a moment, the barman would stop pouring just to look up to see why there was a sudden silence…when they realised it was just a couple of fresh-faced skinny boys posing no threat and no selling packets of knocked off bacon, normality would resume!😁

You are failing to follow the money. For me the Old Firm still exists. That’s the point our PLC as always want their cake and eat it. That’s enough for them. Scottish establishment needs to preside over a successful Rangers. See malicious prosecutions. With the greatest respect I thought we weren’t paranoid enough …if you know your history etc

Somebody has to pay for the hun superiority complex.. They are running out of takers. Our plc will play this game(maximizing profit for little risk) at the expense of the overall product.

Now while our plc plays the three monkeys. We watch a rigged league. The team is appalling with regards European standards and we have to watch 11 men behind the ball football.

We apart from beating a beyond shitey hun team are going nowhere.

Some are more happy about that than others.

If as you say the huns died in 2012 then it’s not my job to call it out. It’s the PLC’s

April 18, 2024 1:58 pm

Some fine enjoyable reading this morning!
Bobby – great article.
AweNaw – excellent post
McCaff – also a first class post, with one qualification, which I will get to in a minute.
I always have mixed feelings about the old Glasgow pubs videos, – intense interest mixed with nostalgia.

Now back to your original post about “Miserable Fenian bassas”. I resemble that remark, and demand that I be removed from the list forthwith, at once, directly, post haste, immediately, pronto, asap, lickety split, promptly, rapidly, speedily, swiftly, staightaway and without delay, as I am, in fact, a miserable mine shafting, Proddy bassa.🤣 Non practicing, of course.
Iniquitous IV😊

April 18, 2024 2:03 pm

Awe Naw…yip! I agree the PLC want their cake and want to eat it, too. But that’s where I think the theorising falls down. Are we expected to believe that our managers have been complicit in this charade? I think Deila and Lennon were placemen but for the life of me I can’t see Ange and Brendan signing up for this! Well, Ange didn’t actually, he walked. Actually, so did Brendan so how does all this fit the narrative. That’s where I struggle with it. How can you sell the Club to ambitious men and expect their support (which should naturally, hopefully lead to success). Especially in Brendan’s case…he left for the reasons you suggest still exist! That doesn’t sit with me and is why I think we’re, all of us, missing something that may be staring us in the face. My thoughts on that are in some way we are being hamstrung by the 5WA, I genuinely dunno how but there’s something somewhere allowing the Huns to behave with no care for anything other than themselves and everyone seems powerless to do anything about it.
Or as you say, mibbe I’m just not paranoid enough…although I tend to think my wife, weans, family and friends might kinda disagree with that!!

April 18, 2024 2:05 pm

Also Awe Naw…IF the Huns died? Now you’re at the wind up!

April 18, 2024 2:09 pm

IQ4…we don’t differentiate between Catholic and Non-Catholic Fenians on here, We leave that kind of Sectarianism to other less liberal sites! 😀
And re the Old Pubs, that link I provided is a great reference point for loads of Glasgow pubs and goes back years, even to the last century. It’s worth a walk down memory lane. Sometimes there’s not a lot of info about a pub but it has wee comments from regulars etc which can be quite entertaining!

April 18, 2024 2:20 pm

Huns never died according to our plc. See OF prices
Now the list here is endless. No debate. The hard of thinking cling on to the Derby nomenclature. It’s not their fault that they are fucking stupid but it’s not mine either.

Brendan had enough of it first time round. Hopefully there was some movement on this particular issue for him to come back and do it again rather than a career rebuilding exercise at 3m a year for him. Ange got pissed off with it soon enough. Ronnie and Lenny do as they are told. All four of them have nothing’s to do with it anyway I’m rest assured that the PLC act the same way to all entities. Deceitful and that all four would attest to if it wasn’t for NDA’s.

Why else would treble winning managers chuck it ?KPI’s attained.

Im not getting into this debate to be honest with you. For me it’s leading a horse to water territory but you can’t make it drink.

I’m just asking is this it ? Is this good enough for us? Is this what we want? Mib based biased football…like I have never seen in my lifetime and with VAR. No away fans, security issues etc etc.

If we want to put a stop to it then we have to call it out.

April 18, 2024 2:26 pm

Enjoyed your post about the Nitsy pubs. It reminded me that back in 1972, I was temporarily a bus driver out of Newlands garage. I did the 38, 45, 57, 48 and 48A routes. The latter two were Midland St to Nitshill and Priesthill. Several years before that, I had to a girlfriend who lived on Ravenscraig Drive in Priesthill, and I never enjoyed walking back home after taking her home, as the area could be a tad dodgy.

Late one Friday or Saturday night, I was driving a bus out of Midland Street headed to Nitshill. It was a one man operated bus, and I was fully loaded before I left Midland St. An inspector I had never seen before boarded the bus at the gushet at Shawlands. He checked the tickets downstairs, then headed towards the stairs just behind me as I watched him in the mirror. I said, “I widnae bother.”
He said, “How no? Whadya mean?”
I said, “Naebiddy offered me any money.”
He said, “Oh!” and exited the bus at the next stop.

April 18, 2024 2:34 pm

Awe Naw…first things first, there’s a market for £50 tickets that’s being exploited. It’s the biggest game in the domestic calendar and is a sell out irrespective of what side of the Old Firm/Deidco argument you sit on. It’s not £50 to propagate the relationship between the clubs or maintain the relationship between them, it’s a supply and demand price, no more no less. You do yourself a disservice in choosing to ignore that.
I don’t hang onto the Old Firm or Derby nomenclature, it’s there and if it’s there I want to see my team fuck them. Just like I want to see Ross County, Dundee, you name them, fuck them. If they weren’t there to be beat, I would be delighted with that scenario, too!
I also accept Brendan might be here just for the cash.
It’s not like leading a horse to water at all! I’m not seeing what you’re seeing and you haven’t given conclusive evidence of what you’re suggesting. If you can, the horse will surely lap it up!
Finally, we probably are the biggest underperforming Club in the World. We should be doing so much better and I wonder how much is down to Desmond’s instructions (probably against Stock Market rules) that we just do enough. I would love nothing more than to see us perform year in year out in the quarter and semis of the Champion’s League!

IQ4…we would get the No4 bus from outside St Gerard’s on Govan Road up to my bit in Linthouse, the fair was 2p. We would sneak on without paying, keep the 2p for sweets, which we tried to steal out of our Asian friend’s shop on the corner of Govan Road and Orkney St so didn’t really need to skip the fare!!
One day, at home time, the bus arrived and the driver just sat back and watched all the kids just pile on. Nobody paid, the bus was full upstairs and down, I was standing on the stairs. The driver closed the doors and immediately drove round to Orkney Street Police Station, locked the doors and kept his hand on the horn until the polis came out!! I was a good boy, on the surface and was shitting myself at the thought of being arrested or the polis taking me home!
As I was stood waiting for the inevitable a friend of my mum’s, I hadn’t seen her sitting there shouted to me “McCaff…come here!” She was sitting alone on a double seat, stood up and let me sit at the window. This was even worse for me as the polis were checking for tickets…and I didnae huv wan!!
Anyway, looking out the window I could see all the kids taken off the bus, getting their names taken by the polis…I was terrified cos old May would surely be phoning my Ma if I was taken off the bus by the polis. The polis came up checking kids’ tickets, kicking them off for their colleagues on the pavement to deal with. Closer and closer they got, I was knitting buttons with my sphincter, when the polis got to me and May’s seat he gave me a cursory glance and walked on. Old May had saved my bacon, big time!
Apologies for the People’s Friend-style story…it’s just a wee memory that came back to me! 😳

Celtic’s prospects for this season look a lot brighter than they did when I decided to chuck supporting the club. In my letter to the club, I cited the poor recruitment policy, both for players and for senior management at the club. Within weeks, it was announced that senior recruiters were moving on to seize new opportunities! On the recruitment front, Kuhn and Idah have proved to be better than I thought, although I doubt either will be a beneficial asset for Europe.

Sevco have faltered and we are starting to hack out good enough performances in half a game to get results.

So, I ask myself, has any of this changed my position? Did I, in fact, act too hastily?

Of course, such thoughts have raced through my Rioja addled brain, especially on game days.

Football is a sport for the emotions and Celtic certainly plays with your emotions. Emotions that I felt at the time of my letter were betrayal, disgust at poor decision making, and feelings of helplessness. Unfortunately, these are now deep rooted and a little serendipity cannot reverse them.

Good luck and I hope Celtic do win the league, particularly, but, so far, not enough has happened to reassure me that Celtic intend to be a progressive club. Palma or Kuhn as replacements for Jota. I shall not even cite Tilio! Bernardo or Holm as replacements for Mooy…nope.

I am content where I am, fortunately, I have no bitterness only thanks for many great memories.
