Old Babyface saves the day

The good news is that we stayed alive in the title race, didn’t blink nor dropped any points, infact we matched our title rivals score to keep the precious possibly vital goal difference exactly the same.
The bad news is that,,,we were pish.

It was scrappier than a junkyard, not at all pleasing on the eye, it was nervy at times. Not for any stretch of play did we look settled, comfortable on the ball, playing anywhere near our maximize. The inconsistency that has haunted ourselves plus the team was all too evident yet again. Still, approaching the very last games of the season, we are incapable of two good halves of football. Yesterday we couldn’t produce even one good half. It’s infuriating, it’s Celtic right now.

I can’t even blame the pitch, it actually looked improved, but the pitch has nothing to do with very poor marking from corners, wrong runs made while the right run is ignored, team shape or cohesiveness. The front, middle, and back all looked very suspect, I was just begging for that whistle to blow which is never a good sign. Some might say winning ugly is the mark of a good side, I posit always winning ugly is the opposite of a good side. We just aren’t very good.

We have some good players capable of good moments, and so it proved. If we are to achieve success this campaign it will be a classic case of the unlikely lads helping to deliver, Scales, Idah, Iwata, Kuhn, we can surely add James Forrest to that list now. The old but forever young winger. Thank goodness he’s still on the books. Thank goodness we are still in the hunt.

Good Morning Sentinels – Grand Day To Be A Tim

Great match yesterday, if not great football, really lovin’ the end of season runin’.

One of the Glasgow Giants is going to have a double, Celtic could end up without a trophy to show for this season’s “endeavours”.

So nerves are frayed…

It’s NOT going to happen, but judging by the comments a wee reality check is needed.

Outside Kuhn, the team that started today was from Ange’s squad.

Who are we missing from Ange’s squad.!?

Then there was the players that finished last season unfit…

Now that’s quite a dent in a squad, that most thought was lacking a bit especially for UCL football, yet BR got pelters for giving James Forrest an extended contract.

There is an argument that states, we have not signed a decent first team starter in two and a half seasons (Since the January 2022 window)

Of the players featured yesterday only Palma, Kuhn and Idah (loan), were signed within that period and although hope springs eternal, there is an argument that they are not the quality of Celtic first team starters, certainly not yet.

Whatever the reasons, and surely the blame game can be put on hiatus until after May 25th, the Ange – BR transition left a lot to be desired.

So, we are where we are and enjoying the ups and downs of the rolla’ coasta’ runin’ is where we are…

We are still seeing some grand football from the team, yet only a couple of standouts from yesterday’s game…

My third choice is the rock of the team, not one of his better performances, yet barring any other standouts he gets it just for being there.

So winging it’s way to SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

1. James Forrest
2. Liam Scales
3. CCV

Have a great day…

Aff oot…

I think you summed up this team in one sentence.
“We just are very good”

This squad is going to need a major overhaul in the summer.
I’m sure the recruitment team are on it.
Oh wait a minute, they’re on gardening leave.
We’re a shambles of a club.

The drop off in contribution from Kyogo is stark.
11 league goals is run of the mill territory for any striker in this league.
Should be at Shankland’s level of 21 plus, not the likes of Murray at RC.

Even duffer Dessers has overtaken him.

April 29, 2024 10:11 am

All it will take to retain the title, with two games to spare, will be home wins against the second and third placed teams. Very easy to say but with this Celtic team, a huge challenge to execute. Some might find it exciting, not me, just pure torture witnessing inept display after inept display.

The perceived wisdom that a returning Brendan would improve player A, B, and C, hasn’t happened. No idea why not. Perhaps, in the fullness of time, the manager will tell us his side of the story that is season 2023/24. Would certainly like to hear it.

JF — didn’t do much / some of his play was pretty poor at times.
However what he did was class — two great finishes which should be no surprise as he is a class finisher.

Also some of his wing play was excellent — very effective because he was not trying too hard.
He worked out the abilities of the guy he was up against and just did enough to get the ball away.
He showed his experience plus some great ham acting — big motions to set up to cross and then cut back.

Our other wingers try to beat their man all ends up — has to be perfect before they get the cross away.
So in this case less is more.

But if JF at 32 is the answer — then we really do have some questions to answer.

April 29, 2024 10:29 am

Strikers require service.
Kyogo’s low total is simply due to a system that lacks potency and service.
When most balls are played horizontally and vertically what chance does a striker making excellent diagonal runs have of receiving ball when team is coached to take zero risk?

April 29, 2024 10:29 am

Salah is 32yo. So is VVD,and plenty of other top players. Lots of players are still effective at that age. If we think that when a young player is good enough he is old enough,it applies to older players too.

It was a poor game but a good result, despite our worst efforts at times.

Nerves are playing a part and everyone inside Celtic Park these next two home games has a big part to play in helping calm the players.

We have two huge games, we can win both if we are all united and KTF.

“When most balls are played horizontally and vertically what chance does a striker making excellent diagonal runs have of receiving ball when team is coached to take zero risk?”

Excellent point, one which has puzzled me and pissed me off all season. Though it’s worth pointing out that Kyogo and Jota were at their best when both were playing-if one was injured, the other barely seemed to function.

It might be then that the problem isn’t Kyogo, nor our lack of supply from the midfield, rather that our wingers are brutal.

Corners — an egg chasing perspective.

Back in the day playing in a team who lacked the lean and long stature of our middle class opponents.
I was given the responsibility of throwing the ball in at the line outs — I was the only guy who could throw a ball in the then modern NFL style as the old timers were still using the two handed “Shy” technique.

Up against it height wise — just about every week to be fair — practice / tactics / skulduggery / timing / fakery.
Everything was in play to try and win the ball back — in the 80’s so lifting was not allowed / had to be a free jump.

The moral of the story — work hard enough and you will find a way.
They are tall — timing becomes everything.
They are big — move them about / go long / over the top.
They are good — wait till they land and then push / shove / tackle / ruck / stamp.
Being the 80’s biting and gouging were considered to be a bit old school / not encouraged.
We saved that for Lenzie / Stathclyde Plod in 84 / the Welsh — they got their retaliation in early doore.

Now about our corners …

Dundee work to the max — 12 goals and counting max.
We seem to be lazy amateurs working in their shadow.
Our set up looks one dimensional and not very effective.
Plus we struggle to get the ball past the first guy.
In other words we are honking.
Sums us up at the moment.

April 29, 2024 10:48 am

Our wingers may or may not be brutal.
Time it takes for them to receive ball usually has them marked so returning ball backwards or hopeful punt is only option.
Our outdated horizontal system has been sussed and with no central threat our opponents are comfortable with us ferrying out wide.
Also as I posted yesterday our players body positioning when receiving a pass is often in a negative position to accommodate our cautious system.

BMCUW @ 10.37

AP Season 1 — the best combo was LA to KF.
The ball was put on a shallow diagonal or a cross towards the 6 yard box at the front post.
All done at pace so that KF could get in front of his man with a run from the middle / penalty spot area.

Our focus on now on inverted wingers means that our natural shape is for the winger to cut back / go inside.
Any ball to the six yard box becomes a much more precise pass with less room for failure / easier for the GK to deal with.
The ball is going into traffic with KF having less space to work with / less opportunities to time his run.

Not good coaching / not good set up / not good football.

April 29, 2024 10:57 am

Been saying all season-and much of last season too-that we aren’t hitting the line and squaring the ball low across the danger area. It’s where the majority of our goals were coming from in the first 18 months or so of Ange being in charge. Perfect example being when we beat Dundee Utd 9-0.

Fan @ 10.48

Our issue with wingers — we have plenty.

They are inverted so the drive to the by line is hobbled.
They have to come short to get the ball so they have to deal with a low block / 2 banks of 4.
The pass to the winger very rarely takes anyone out the game.
They play wide so the FB can’t overlap.
The sided MF does not offer enough — MOR on the right is the worst but RH on the left is at half pace at the moment.

We do not play the traditional / Aus NT of 2014 vintage “inverted FB move” anymore.

Winger plays high and wide.
Sided MF moves out to the wing — marker follows but is not touch tight.
CB advances until challenged then passes to the MF’er on the wing — his marker moves to stop him advancing.
Full back runs the channel into the MF and takes the pass from the MF’er.
He has no direct opposition so the opposition have to break their formation to challenge him.
That then opens up opportunities for us.

From memory space for the winger is the one used most open.
Very formulaic / not very subtle but very useful if done right / done at pace / done with confidence.
It even makes GT look half decent.

For whatever reason that is not off limits to us.

April 29, 2024 11:06 am

As things stand I’d rather give Champions League a miss next season. With this squad and this level of performance we will be embarrassed.

Problem is we all know we can’t allow R2ngers to collect the big bucks. We need to win the league and take our medicine in Europe.

Unless, of course, the board and our scouting team have big plans and have top quality players lining up to join us.

There’s a first time for everything I suppose.

That is why the L/pool season has collapsed.

MS has run his race with the team / JK — he is now a much better footballer not as good a striker.
VVD is only playing at his former level one game in two.
JK has run out of ideas / energy.

Not nice to see.

With these players and BR’s playing system the thought of Champions league football is terrifying.

Lost in translation ...
April 29, 2024 11:21 am

Wingers — we used to be set up / our style of play was to get the winger some space so that he could get in the fast early cross.

Now we seem to want the winger to have to beat his man to get the space to get in the cross.
Teams are now playing our wingers very tight so they do not have the space they once had.

LA was a wide attacker not a trad winger.
If he had no space then he struggled — CL in 2022 and his confidence was drained.
He had no chance playing with BR’s system at the start of the season.

LP is more of a trad winger — slower / better feet / can beat his man.
But they now double up on him and he is only partially effective.

Our set up is poor / our coaching is poor / our engagement with the game is poor.
We never seem to change our tactics just change the players on the field.
The A team can’t make the tactics work — what chance has the B team?
Our only play is fresh legs and hope they tire.

I’m very much on the same page regarding Champions League, if we do manage to stumble over the finishing line ahead of the Govan outfit. A three match package becomes a four match cost. Kerching for Desmond, Lawwell, and Nicholson. Perhaps the support will wise up and not be fooled twice.

What BR decides to do after the SCF will be the key. Judge them by their actions and not their words. See Ange Postecoglou for reference.

Plus the nickel and dime finance angle and how DD is rubbing his hands with glee at 4 home games.

4 home games means 4 away games — City Break CSC can’t wait.
Plooky youth CSC up for the challenge and ready with the new flags.

Next season — huge change needed.
Not sure if BR will be here — Rightmove CSC.

Lots of dross in the CL — the only thing we lack is the confidence.

I never mentioned CLeague not being for (likes of us.)
My fear is our already low international standing being shredded further and our place as perennial whipping boys being cemented.
I am of the opinion our coach does not have the system that works in the international arena nor do we have the playing squad.
Recent board history suggests we won’t recruit to standard required.
Europe should be our barometer but unfortunately the OF model is the height of our custodians ambition.

Whoever stumbles over the finishing line to grab the CL riches will stand a great chance of creating history. For the first time someone can lose all 8 games and smash the record negative goal difference set by the huns.

The “lucky” team will probably be the worst team in the competition – unless BR can secure a sizeable chunk of the £74m currently residing in a biscuit tin somewhere.

Hi Jobo

I’ve given yesterday’s performance a lot of thought and have really struggled to pick 3 players.
Obviously, James Forrest, like last Saturday, came on and turned the game in our favour.

I also thought Iwata came on and showed our midfield 3 how to impact the game-something the 3 starters failed once again miserably to do.

In third place I’ve picked CCV – for no reason other than he looked a class above the rest at the back – as he usually does.
