The Winners Parade

Now that we have allowed the euphoria of Saturday and Wednesday night to wash all over us,now that we’ve luxuriated in it as much as is socially acceptable,we have to turn our thoughts to the immediate future. No,not the summer rebuild which is already at least a year too late-that can wait for a very short while. I’m talking about tomorrow and a week tomorrow.

Listen,we all lapped up the run-in to the season. We’ve enjoyed every game since we were cheated at Tynecastle. Shown them that even when they do their worst,we always have our best in the tank. And them in our pocket, hahaha! Who’s them, you might ask? Oh,the huns. Their fans. Their fans in the media. Their fans with whistles and flags and remote control frame-by-frame. You know, and you didn’t need to ask. But the next two games throw up an interesting wee quandary.

From about Christmas onwards,I think it became clear to our manager that if we were going to win this league it would have to be done mainly with the guys who had already been there. Players who had been over the course and distance and come home as winners. He had tried the new guys-let’s face it there were enough of them-but they consistently came up short. Sure,Bernardo and Iwata got a shot with Reo and CalMac being out. And yes,Yang too got a short burst of games until he fell victim to Beaton. But really, the second half of the season was about the players that were already here when he arrived last June.

And they weren’t the players that had already won things under Ange. Jota had already left and Mooy had announced his retirement. Starfelt was intent on following the path of true love to the Iberian Peninsula. Abada was either injured or struggling with the war in Gaza. That’s a third of the side gone right away, with another few leaving us for the Asian Cup as well. What’s a man to do?

I think the question he asked is not “What am I gonna do?” but “Who can I trust?” He’d have looked and listened at the training ground,in the dressing room, during media statements, and seen for himself who were the strong characters in the side. And he’d have made them the bedrock,do or die,for his future. He knew he could rely on the likes of Hart,AJ,Taylor,CCV. He soon realised too that he has a strong and resilient centre half in Liam Scales,a player who might never be the best but will battle and never let you down. CalMac has that same, but in midfield-and with more than a sprinkling of stardust in his armoury. When he is on his game,he controls the game.

Matt O’Riley is supremely talented. Can make the killer pass,or dig deep and win the ball. Start a move or finish it,with the goals and assists to prove it. He is limited only by his lack of pace, but that can be a big problem at the highest level. That charge can’t be laid at our two main frontmen,Maeda and Kyogo. And they too are excellent at what they do,but without the consistency of Matt,CalMac etc.

That’s nine players for the team before he has to make a decision. Who plays the remaing role in midfield and on the wing? The first answer is obviously Reo-but we barely had him fit for most of the campaign. The second part fell to the unlikely James Forrest, for too long a forgotten man. In the last month,he has shown why it was a mistake to forget about him and has enjoyed reminding us all of his many talents.

We all know that the modern game needs more than eleven players though. Twenty make it to the squad these days, either on the pitch or on the benches. No wonder the wage bills are so high, huh? And who could the manager call on that he could rely on,that the fans in the stands and pubs were sure could make the difference? I’ll give you four, but that’s all that fit the criteria. Ralston, who is solid. Kuhn, and I might be pushing it with him. Bernardo, but only rarely. And Idah. Who is only on loan. (As is Bernardo,of course.)

So here’s the two questions I want to ask, bearing in mind events planned for tomorrow and for next Saturday. We want to win at Hampden next weekend,we want to complete a double and we want to really hammer nails into the hunnery hordes. I think that since tomorrow is a dead rubber and some of our players have been playing on the edge for long enough that some time out tomorrow might be a good idea. But is it fair to deny them their day in the spotlight? These players have put themselves on the line all season, the fans come out to glorify them and the reserves turn out for the day?

There is every reason to rest players for next weekend, but surely not at the expense of being in the backseat of your own awards ceremony? But then, risk injury in a nothing game when the league is already won? Hey,not my call…

The second question is about Idah. He’s scored eight goals in his time here, yet he has only played about ten hours of football for us. Are those goals enough to justify a permanent move, are those paltry minutes enough? Does he look remotely likely to do it against the teams that we come up against in Europe? Or does he petrify defences up here with his power and pace, his ability to win and hold the ball while bringing others into the game is something that we otherwise don’t have. Make your own arguments for and against.

The big decider on that will obviously be the fee involved. Absolutely ridiculous that we took him on loan without the option to buy at an agreed price. If he fails,we don’t want him. If he succeeds,he will be priced out of our reach. As looks likely to be the case, with Norwich getting a little bit greedy and above themselves. Except…

Norwich lost heavily to Leeds last night, and will now spend a third successive year in The Championship. Means they are on their last parachute season, and savings will have to be made and the squad trimmed. From looking at £6m a month ago,I think they know that £4m is top dollar and may accept less. And there you have it,two simple queries to ponder. Do you play the Bhoys who won the title on Trophy Day,when we have a big game next Saturday? Do you sign Adam Idah, and at what price?

Fortunately for us all,I don’t make those decisions. And I’ll certainly trust the decisions of the man who does. He has earned that, and I hope that the directors know it too.

JOBO POTY Competition

May 17, 2024 12:01 am

Good evening, friends.
I know that after Saturday’s Derby win, we were 1/2500 to win the league but that still didn’t stop the pre-match nerves kicking in for this old man. Subconsciously, the fear of losing again against Kilmarnock and then knowing that we would still have to win our final game brought an extra edge to our midweek fixture. Fortunately, the nerves were blown away very quickly as we took a 2-goal lead within the opening 12 minutes. Adam Idah had already looked impressive before he opened the scoring in the 5th minute and when Maeda made it 2, we just knew that the title was ours. Fine link up from Idah and Maeda saw the ball laid on a plate for Forrest to make it 3 on the 35th minute. 3 very similar goals and the type of moves that wee Kyogo has been crying out for all season – hit the byline, cut it across on the deck, tap it in! Just a pity for him he was on the bench and denied a first half hat trick!
We continued our fine play throughout the 2nd half with the top form of Player Of The Year (in waiting) Matt O’Riley being rewarded with 2 fine goals. This puts him level with Kyogo as our top scorer for this season. I’ll add the goalscorers table at the bottom.
The scenes at the final whistle were joyous with every single player living (and loving) the moment and lapping up the adulation cascading down from the stand, despite the Killie DJ doing his best with several plays of Paper Roses.
A really memorable league season for all sorts of reasons, good and bad but ultimately a really hard won title has, for the 12th time in 13 years, gone the way of the good guys. We are in a very good place in our attempt to win The Double.
We have now played 48 competitive games. We have managed 36 wins, 7 draws and 8 defeats, scoring 111 goals and conceding 48. We are 6 points clear with 1 league game left and have become CHAMPIONS AGAIN for the 54th time, eclipsing Rangers’ (RIP) haul of 53½.
In terms of the 3 domestic trophies played for in Scotland the totals are now: R2ngers 3, Rangers(RIP) 113½, Celtic 116. With, of course, this season’s Scottish Cup still up for grabs.
My thanks to the 60 who voted this week. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Hart: 0
Johnston: 4
Carter-Vickers: 11
Scales: 2
Taylor: 0
McGregor*: 16
Hatate: 5
O’Riley*: 55
Forrest: 19
Idah*: 54
Maeda: 13
Kuhn: 0
Kyogo: 0
Palma: 0
Iwata: 0
Bernardo: 0
For those that check these things, the 1 missing vote was suggested as going to Brendan Rodgers.
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Kilmarnock are –
O’Riley – 5 points
Idah – 4 points
Forrest – 3 points
McGregor – 2 points
Maeda – 1 point

The overall positions after 48 games played are as follows –
100 points – O’Riley
86 points – Scales
68 points – McGregor
63 points – Carter-Vickers
42 points – Hart and Johnston, A.
39 points – Kyogo
32 points – Maeda
28 points – Palma
25 points – Yang
22 points – Bernardo
21 points – Forrest
20 points – Idah and Oh (a certain irony around that!)
19 points – Kuhn
18 points – Taylor
16 points – Iwata
15 points – Hatate
10 points – Ralston
9 points – Johnston M, Nawrocki and Turnbull
6 points – Lagerbielke
4 points – Bain, Bernabei and Holm
3 points – Welsh
2 points – Abada
0 points – Frame, Haksabanovic, Kelly, Phillips, Starfelt, Tilio and Vata

*Goalscorers table*
18 – Kyogo and O’Riley
10 – Maeda
9 – Palma
8 – Idah
7 – Forrest and Turnbull
5 – Oh
4 – Bernardo
3 – Hatate, Kuhn and Taylor
2 – Johnston M and McGregor
1 – Abada, Carter-Vickers, Kelly, Lagerbielke, Holm, Iwata, Johnston A, Scales, Vata and Yang
2 Own Goals
Total Goals – 111
We now have just 2 more sleeps until before Trophy Day and Party Saturday which begins with our 12.30 kick off at home against St Mirren. Fingers crossed that the subsequent celebrations also include news that EKFC have won away in Stranraer (2-2 from the first leg).
Hail Hail!

Enjoyable leader Bobby I don’t know how Mahe and yourself do these daily, and I’m glad I don’t have to make the decision on the team for the buddies game, I think Brendan will rest a few as it’s a dead rubber really, but who knows ?
Still it’s bound to be a fans day and I’m sure whoever plays will enjoy the occasion.

Beautiful place BRRB, I used to spend each year in Ballinha, when I was into Salmon fishing, of course it was usually too sunny to go fishing and we always ended up in the pub for the Craic and guiness. We used to share the same digs as Jack Charlton, when his house was being built, another nutter who liked to chase bars of silver.

Excellent stuff, BMCUW. Tomorrow, I would tend to start with our strongest team, for a bit of continuity, then bring on the subs as necessary. The following week will take care of itself. At least we now know, that we are travelling to Hampden as champions. What a great boost that is.

Best wishes to the pooch for a full recovery.

Tomoki Iwata should be added to the list of players to be relied upon.
He stepped up when Calmac was missing and did a good job. Definitely a go to when we make our 5 substitutions. Certainly more so than Ralston and as much as Bernardo.
He deserves recognition.

My gripe with Adam Idah’s inclusion on Wednesday was that he’d have to be more clinical in front of goal than he showed when he came on versus The Rangers.
Not only did he get his goal his hold up and link up play was good. A tendency at times to hold the ball too long but has got an incisive pass in his armoury.
A full pre season and further engagement with “ the group” and under BR’s tutelage could be a real asset. A buy from me.

Great leader 👏👏👏👏👏

Two answers:

You start with your strongest team tomorrow and let them get the ovation they deserve. Treat as training game and make 5 subs.( Avoids injuries).

Before Wednesday, I thought Idah was ok but would not sign him for 5 million ( figure quoted).
However, his performance was outstanding with hold up play, strength and link up play top notch.
He’s still young and can further develop.
So it’s a yes from me 👍👍👍

Enjoy your day everyone and have some fun in the sun 😎 😎 😎

I agree with just sayin. Iwata is a player. Like him a lot.

I think we are lucky that Pierre’s boy chose Norwich. Seems to have flopped bigtime and we got the spin off. Idah has impressive stats and he has won as many league championships as Tavpen. I would happily take either him or miovski. Play the strongest team. Keep the momentum going. Give them a break when we score our 4th.

Another excellent read and plenty of food for thought contained

Our team were on the lash to the wee small hours on Wed/Thurs. So, most, even the subs will be a bit brittle today, but all fine by tomorrow. I’d start with a mix of the squad, give Ralston, Iawata, Yang, Kuhn and Idah starting shirts, maybe even Bain too. But if he made wholesale changes I genuinely wouldn’t complain as it’s been a heavy 6 weeks for the core 13 players we rely on .

As for signings , I’d defo sing Adam, even at £6m, you know what you’re getting. Bernardo is a technically good player, ideal in Europe, but it may be we just extend his loan if we can convince MOR to stay on?

Need cover at full backs for certain.

One thing that stands out to me on Jobo’s list of goalscorers, apart from the drop in Kyogo’s contribution, is the paltry three goals between our centre halves. One each for CCV, Liam and GL.

Given the number of free kicks and corners we get this needs work on delivery and execution.
Add to the list of areas for improvement.

A corner is a fixed set piece where the taker has a defined area to hit a football…about 35 meters to the middle of the goal at Celtic Park.

The times we underhit, overhit or put it into keepers’ hands is just not very impressive.

Still not quite sure whether I think we should be signing Idah. Last Saturday, it was a no , after Wednesday night it was a yes.
At 23 , there is still time for improvement.
I don’t see why we can’t convince O’Riley to stay, as I don’t see many EPL teams being interested in him.
He lacks pace and physicality for that league.

Good leader again

Just heard I can get to game tomorrow- which is a relief for me if nobody else. I owe a few favours

I’d imagine BR will be pretty pragmatic re tomorrow’s game- players who have any kind of knock won’t be risked so Joe H and Daizen M might not play and maybe Callum M and Reo H too. Ange’ Ps league seasons finished with flourishes but we have made an erse of things too on these days- as a child I can recall Morton being 3 up in ten minutes or so on a similar occasion.

Adam Idah is someone I cannot make my mind up on. He’s had some cracking matches – ones where I wish we played with 2 up- but in others, often at home, he’s looked really limited. I do think that, as with Kuhn and perhaps Yang & Bernardo , the boss probably thinks he can work with/on him – as he has with Liam S already (playing well again after a poor spell). Palma infuriates me- though he had one good spell this season – but although Lagerbielke and Holm looked okay to me in their limited opportunities the manager seems mightily unimpressd with what he sees on a day-to-day basis. I have not always been impressed with Brendan R’s performance this season but I have never doubted that he knows more about what makes a good player than I do.

A year ago we needed a high class centre back, a decent left back, a player who can anchor rhe midfield and a goalie. We still do – with the need to find these players even more pressing. Hopefully the manager will get who he wants.

One other issue to add to your list — the concerted effort to kick RH out of the SPL.
Week after week he is on the end of an ankle stamp or a fore arm smash to the back of the head.
Might be the reason why his form has dipped as he tries to learn the rules of a new game.

AI — the support are not good negotiators / LD went from Livi to QPR for £2mill.
AI — is a Norwich bench warmer and should be priced accordingly.
AI — good basics but as raw as sushi.

Work for the summer — huge and growing.
The issue is not to make the same mistakes as a year ago.

Investigate all markets:

Bosmans at a loose end — AaM.
CL experience sitting on a bench — JH.
Established players wanting a new challenge — KF.
Low cost markets — AP’s plan in all its glory.
Young talent showing promise and ambition — bit short on examples / OTH + LA maybe.
PL Formula punts / projects — Two or three at a push.

Other areas to scout:

SPL nuggets showing promise.
Established talent in Canada and Aus.
Iran / ME.

The B Team — who is coming up this season?
Need to scout for the U18’s / B Team / First team squad at the same time.

GK — Big hole to fill plus sort out the talent pipeline.

RB — Someone to challenge AJ.
CB — Sort out the squad / add quality / CCV and CS needed improvement so work to be done.
LB — Desperately need quality from anywhere.

MF / 6 — Needs a lot of work.
MF / 8 @ left and right — Needs reorganised / talent pipeline.
MF / 10 — Not used one lately but MOR sometimes plays the role / BR’s tactics will decide.

RW — Needs some work / YH-j up to speed? / will we always play inverted?
LW — Less work with MJ in reserve / again will we always play inverted.
CF — AI has shown some class / OH-j has disappeared / KF vs BR’s tactics?

If MOR goes for big money — £35mill plus loads of add ons AV style — we will have the cash.
If MOR does not go for big money — £25mill region — then the market is depressed and their is value to be had at all levels.

AV = Adam Virgo and his magical £1.5mill “fee”.

Norwich sack Manager just hours after playoff hammering. What impact might this have on a possible Idah transfer, i wonder.

May 17, 2024 1:20 pm

Idah is an enigma. I am on the fence re buying him, because as others have said more eloquently, he is inconsistent. He is strong, has a clever flicking pass, can turn and shoot. He has everything that Oh has, including poor control. On transfer market website he is valued at 2.8 million euros, nowhere near 5 million euros or pounds. His highest attained value is 3 million euros and that is around what he is worth.

i hope we are looking at other options and my decision would be based on who those options are and a negotiated price for Idah. The one good thing about not having an option to buy is that we can negotiate price. He has a contract until 2028 so Norwich had something in mind for his future…that would be either loan him out in order to sell, or loan him to develop for retention. I suspect it is the former. Given Norwich fell short of promotion they will probably want shot of Idah’s lengthy contract, especially since he is not a starter.

Random thoughts,

May 17, 2024 1:43 pm

The amount of times Hatate is fouled is scandalous. Against Killie on a few occasions he was kicked well after ball was gone. They used a rotation to try and put him out of game.
celtic plc as usual condone with their silence.
on Adam Idah he should be congratulated for being a big reason we captured the title with some vital goals!
But realistically he is not going to take us to a higher level.
Has occasional nice touches but skill and movement not up to European level.
£5 million to steep a price for his talent.
Would give £2 million as a squad player especially for bruising SPL games and see if he can be improved with coaching.

A Thing Of Beauty
May 17, 2024 2:08 pm

I am very undecided on Idah. Last week against the Huns he looked like a drunk Bambi yet on Wednesday seemed almost unplayable. That sums him up for me. I can actually see us buying him for the potential, signing Miovski as well as he is proven in this league and it’ll be Kyogo who leaves. He has really struggled this season. I appreciate the service has been no where near where it should but he’s been no where near where he should be either. Sometimes players just don’t suit a manager or a system. I think that might be the case with Kyogo and BR.

I’d be happy with offloading Oh and buying Idah.

Kyogo, Idah and Miovski would give us some firepower up top for next season.

Would we buy both? I think we will need at least 2.
