Another three points

As the team can only collect the solitary unclaimed prize and not three points anymore, I thought I’d lead by example and assemble three points on their behalf.

Number 1,,the kids. We’ve apparently offered Vata and Kelly new bumper deals, and my initial reaction to this news was its a bit late in the day isn’t it!
They are on the verge of departing, when we finally play our hand. Erm, doesn’t sound like the smartest tactic in the world to me, could we not have laid out our best terms mid-season, and if they sign up reward with minutes?

Taken individually, I personally don’t even like their odds of cutting it at Parkhead. Rodgers likes certain qualities in his wide men, Rocco is very slight though fast and skillful, I just don’t see him as the answer should Maeda be injured (he doesn’t tire), I believe Yang and Kuhn have more going for them in that respect.

Kelly might be good for those eight post Champions League games, but that’s also when teams will have a go at plenty of energy sapped legs who more than likely just tasted defeat. Plus he has Iwata, a proven player, maybe Bernardo ahead of him. Then there’s Kwon who just proved himself SPL capable, and theres Odin Tiago Holm who is a little older but has played more football, who was highly rated. With another midfielder expected upon Matt’s departure, we actually don’t need Kelly, even Tilio might return. He’s best playing and returning if sufficiently improved. I think we’ve messed up the negotiations, best not mess up their careers, or bloat the squad. A couple of younguns is fine, but we’ actually a pretty young squad. They won’t play much, let ‘em go. You need to be really special to break into a Champions League and Championship winning side, I don’t get that impression from either.

Number 2,,Joe’s replacement. What’s the common denominator between our first choice defensive line?
They are all natural speakers of the English language.
Therefore it’s imperative the next keeper speaks the language also for continuity.
I like the link with the German keeper, they usually have a fair splattering of it, and every suit will like the fact he’s free.
This particular signing will test our transfer policy because we won’t tempt him with 10k a week. If he’s been deemed the next man between the sticks, do a Joe Ledley. Nice signing on bonus and instantly up there with the big earners.
He has the carrot of Europe and the close eyes of the EPL, plus the experience of a much better league,,moving to Celtic would be a solid career move. He ticks all my boxes, I think it’s a case of flex your muscle Celtic. I’ll watch the keeper situation with interest, and fingers crossed we land him not lowball him.

Finally Number 3. I feel it’s got to be said. As much as I like Stephen Welsh, as much as I really want him to succeed, he’s very injury prone and thus cannot be relied upon. Nawrocki cannot get or stay fit, Lagerbielke is decent but slow, Welsh isn’t the strongest though he is cultured, but he’s the third central defender we cannot rely on. That defense needs rebuilt, but having signed a 4 year deal he’s unlikely to be punted, while not be available for long stretches of those four years. Maybe a loan would be best, I like the idea of him going to Lenny’s new club on loan, but there’s every chance he’s back for treatment aftercare couple months.
I just feel we backed the wrong horse, and the Stephen Welsh gamble isn’t a winning bet. I’d love to be proven wrong by the way.

Good leader, Mahe. I believe that most of the players mentioned will be on their way. That of course, does not make them poor players. It’s more a case of fitting into BR’s system. Those who cannot, will not last long. I think that we can be fairly confident, that any signings from here on in, will be BRs alone. That’s as it should be. A manager should stand or fall within the framework of players that he has signed. Not players who have been picked out by the suits. Incompetents who knows less than nothing about football.

Hail Hail.

Good morning friends and Happy Season Ticket Renewal Deadline Day!
Fair points, Mahe. On Kelly, he has a dilemma similar to many Celtic youngsters – how much game time is he going to get. He looks good, but obviously there are a host of better midfielders ahead of him. But perhaps he can look to someone who was in the same position 10-12 years ago. Remained patient, got regular game time on loan down south at Notts County and is now on the verge of captaining us to another Double.
So I hope Daniel does sign, and not just because he’s a local EK bhoy that was once taught by my regular golfing pal!
3 more sleeps.

Good points Mahe.

For me the goalie is the most important player in the team and I say that as someone who would love us to get some European kudos back. A Boruc or a Forster. The kind that makes saves they’re not supposed to, that keep us in matches and even nick us a point or 3.

In the rundown of our midfield you missed out Bosun Lawal and it will be interesting to see if the player of the year from the division that gave us Matt is ready for a chance. We dont make enough of loan deals and guys on the fringes , presumably with potential, need to go out and play a la ajer, christie, calnac scales etc. .
I would definitely sign Vata. As Jamesie has showed at the arse end of the season, wingers who can go both ways at a defender are worth far more to the team than the predictable kuhns and palmas of the world. Sign him and get him out on loan. Same with holm, he has to go and play so we can get a proper look at him.
There will be plenty clubs in our league happy to see if they are cut out for the league, plus we have the added bonus of them playing against the tribute act but not ourselves.

May 22, 2024 8:21 am

Not often that I take issue with your articles, but I think your opinions about Vata,Welsh and Kelly overlook the main reason for their contracts being renewed. They qualify as home-grown players, and we need them for European campaigns.

I don’t think they are necessarily being looked at as starters, they would need to improve some for that. But (I think) we are only allowed seventeen imports in European squads, with the rest home-grown either from our own academies or who were born in Scotland. Seventeen players might just get us through a one-off domestic match, but it would not do us for an eight-match European campaign.

These rules were introduced to protect the domestic game, but also to go some way to stopping sides just signing Galactico-type players, evening up the squads along the way. It’s just our luck that they were introduced at a time when Scottish players are no longer of the quality they were when we were kids.

We have to make the best of it. And losing our better Scottish players is not the way to go about it. As an aside,I think Bain is out of contract this summer, and he too would be a hit on that front.

You can try to make some sense from the rules here…–champions-league-group-stage-squads-player-registration-/

Great point re CalMac. He was going nowhere-until he went to Notts County. I don’t think there was a future for him under NL,and I doubt he would have been given a starting place by him if he had remained as manager. His first loan spell was only till December, and despite him doing really well there,NL was more than happy to renew it till the end of the season. I suspect that a deal was there to be done had the manager not resigned.

Ronny Deila came in,played him right away. Scored on his debut, his European debut and his league debut. Never looked back. Maybe some of our “never gonna be good enough” youngsters only need an extended run in the side to show their worth-and to show them that they are valued here.

i replied to you yesterday on here and via Superbru but clearly you haven’t seen either message.

ive just replied again on Superbru but I can’t see any confirmation that my message has actually been sent so I’ll copy it over to here too:

Tony, I would appreciate if you could post my winnings to the Just Giving page of Matt Corr. Matt is going to Malawi with the Celtic Foundation on June 2 and is raising money for the Classrooms for Malawi Project.
Its a cause that’s been close to my heart for the last 10 years not least because my wife is a teacher.

I think the Superbru competition closed almost as soon as it was over, which meant that SFTB could no longer contact people on it. I’ll forward your post to him,if that’s ok.

And well done on being placed, and on donating your prize.

It seems to me that we have a massive amount of backroom staff at Celtic, football must be so much more complicated than it was in my lifetime. Hands must get sore doing ‘high fives’ when we score because there is so many folk in the dugout, not to mention the scouting staff and the analysers.
Were going to need a bigger dugout.
Then look at the scouting network and the lack of young players coming through, how many have made the first team squad since Calum? There’s a big disparity there, but money talks and Celtic must be one of the richest clubs around, but investing in young players must be a risky venture. Looking around I don’t see many young players making the grade and home grown players must at a premium due to recent changes in European rules regarding squad specifications.

What time is it? it must be getting close to “Ten Thirty”, share the ‘man love’ for the “Spirit Of The Lions”. – Bertie Auld xxx.

I think you have the wrong end of the stick on just about everything.

We need to offer our youth prospects a route to a career in the first team.
If we are just going through the motions then what is the point and do we want to go into the CL with a smaller squad than other teams.

RV / 2005 @ 19 — to me more of a central striker than a winger.
Appears to have the potential and talent to make the transition into the seniors under our control.
Lots of chat about attitude issues / desire to leave us behind but we should make the effort.
Your point about timing stands — looks sloppy all the more so as he has a lot of ability.

DK / 2005 @ 18 — seems to have a lot of admirers but I am on the fence.
His history suggests big teams down south have scouted him so we have had competition.
From what he has shown on the pitch he has quite a bit to go but he is as raw as sushi.
Again if we are to have a fully functioning football operation we need to offer players like him a future.

Big issue in all this — as in the case of our MF cohort — what is his best position?
Is it DM / Box2Box / Attacking mid / Playmaker / Water carrier — what is his best position.
More than that after the BL @ Fleetwood? debacle — left as a CB / returned as a MF’er — what position do we want him to play?

If he has the potential that many seem to think he has then we need to offer DK a future.

Point 2 — GK chat.
Football is very multi national at the moment and most if not all teams get by.
To me talent is primary / language skills are secondary as they can be taught.
Everyone @ 99.9% can talk / Not everyone can catch a ball.

Point 3 — SW chat.
That has nothing to do with talent but everything to do with BR’s ego.
He was making a point about our summer signings and nothing about ability.
As things stand we are just about treading water with our CB roster.
CL credibility / progress — CCV + CS needed help / improvement last year.
CCV + LS need help / improvement this season.

CCV needs time to develop without an injury cloud hanging over him.
LS needs time off this summer to settle down and regroup his thoughts plus a proper LB beside him.
SW needs time on the park away from us — to me a good footballer but a poor defender.
Lack of concentration / focus not helped by sitting on a bench.

Huge summer workload ahead.
Interesting to see where we end up.

Our football bandwidth would appear to be very narrow.
AP survived / thrived because he is a proper manager — footballing polymath — who was desperate.
Not sure we even have this at P/head at the moment.

Changes are being made but the pace is slow.

It can be frightening to realise just how badly run we are as a sporting organisation.
Young player brought in — limited development / punted / forgotten about / patronised.

What next — sold for a set of strips and a 5 year pick of the litter card?

It is a well kent fact, that few Huns are able to spot a player of supreme quality. I would include Tavpen and Globetrotter Goldson in this elusive group. Surely the most famous Belgian since Hercule Poirot, will shortly be offering both players 5 year contracts. That would work for me…and most Tims for that matter.

The Huns? A club in constant flux. That’ll do me. Provided that we invest wisely in the summer window, we will hopefully have a better crack at Europe, than we have had in previous years. Europe after all, is where it’s at.The Huns failing to qualify for the CL would be a big bonus.

let’s be honest, they are only ever getting the scraps from our table as long as the hunskelper-in-chief is at Parkhead. Their fear of Brendan dominates not just their waking hours 😉 I’m totally convinced he will leave them in our wake this summer.

Their worst nightmare must be Brendan building for the long-term 👍

What a strange squad. Why are we taking FOUR keepers for, lets be realistic here, THREE games???

I’m delighted to see James Forrest included, thoroughly deserved, and interesting to see young Doak being involved.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Ryan Jack there. Firstly, Clarke must have an exceptional memory – and perhaps it confirms that there must be “token hun” policy in any Scotland squad announcement.

I’ve just popped over to FF to see their reaction. Almost to a man they are saying that Jack and Kelly will be cut from the final squad.
We’ll see……

Who knows what strategy we go forward with.
Our past strategy of buying cheap and occasionally selling high has kept the board happy. The fact that this small mindset has relegated us to European whipping boys during Lawwells tenure has the board unperturbed as long as profits stayed high and bonuses were met.
The fact that the architect of such is back in Chairman’s position doesn’t suggest change will come.
More likely PL remains over BR as long as profits keep coming.
The sale of MOR and Hatate will facilitate spend with their sale and no more than 50% of incoming fees will be reinvested. As long as PL and DD hold the reins the short sighted profiteering will be our continuous strategy!
