An Unsung Hero Falls

He helped save us.
Rest in Peace John Keane.
It depends on your personal stance and opinion, but he was undoubtedly very important in founding the modern day Celtic. It’s said he put a million of his own savings into the club unsecured to ensure our club survived, our history would stay intact and unbroken.
In doing so, in showing his true (green and white) colours, he ensured his very name would always survive in the precious annals of Glasgow Celtic’s glorious history.
Many men have walked through those gates, each helps write a piece of the story and moves on after a while. Most are lucky enough to do it on the field and receive due adoration. John did his part out of the limelight, and didn’t seek the glory. Yet his importance cannot be underestimated.
We are who we are because of men like John.

Surely some sort of recognition of John’s part in our story would be fitting.

Statue-bust type thing? ..

Considering we have known nothing but success since he put his hand in his own pocket.

We certainly know how important a fan John was.

RIP John Keane
Without him, Fergus might not have been needed (unless it was to come back as a holding company with an engine room subsidiary…).

Meeting my old pal Leggy at the Crystal Palace, Jamaica Street on Thursday at 12pm. If you would like to have an uplifting, stimulating, intellectual chat avoid us like the plague. Send money anyway.

John Keane was our get out of jail card at a time when we needed it. He was obviously well aware of the fight by Fergus & Co to wrest control from the old board, the families, and there was no guarantee that he would ever see that £1m again. Indeed, while I am sure it was repaid,I don’t recall reading anywhere that it actually was!

Sure,it’s nice to have a friend in need, that good friend who can be relied on when the nearest cash machine is bust or your card isn’t working. Or when yer actually skint till payday,as we have all been. A tenner here or a score there, what comes around goes around. Not sure many of us have a mate who can nip round to the bank first thing to deposit a million quid before they shut the doors on everything we hold dearest in life outside of our own family and friends.

And no questions asked.

You and I can say we would have done the same thing were we in such a position, but since I’ve never been asked for a million quid,I can’t say for sure that I would. John Keane didn’t bother asking stupid questions because he knew that for him,as a last resort to refuse to help out,the fallout would be bigger than the potential loss of the money.

It takes balls to make such a call, and it takes one helluva leap of faith in the perseverance of one driven expat, and in the honesty of that man who was then little more than a stranger to him. Either Fergus or the board could have hung him out to dry over the club-saving cash injection. Fergus made absolutely sure that every fan was made aware of John’s risky venture, that leap of faith made only to save the good name of the club.

I don’t think he did it for self, nor for publicity. There are cheaper and easier forms of self-promotion. He didn’t do it either to get in with the in-crowd,to ally himself with the winners-after all,it was the old board that he had lent the money to. Nor did he do it just to get the money back-after all,it was the old board that he had lent the money to!!!

He did it because of his deep-rooted and long-standing love of Celtic Football Club.

John Keane. R I P

Judge me by my acts and not by my words.

If ever that famous quote applied to anyone, it applied to John Keane. A truly great Celtic man.

Be in absolutely no doubt, Michael Kelly and Chris White would have preferred Celtic to cease to exist, rather than give up control of our club.

March 4th should forever be known as John Keane day.

RIP John Keane. Your name will not be forgotten by those of us who rallied against the Whites and Kelly’s in the 90s.

What we enjoy today is down to a few good men who put personal gain behind them to ensure the greatest football club in Britain did not succumb to the deeds of numerous foes both inside and outside Celtic.

Thank you.

Ukraine game- VAR Lines drawn ,defending player boot was used to indicate onside, attacking player still had parts of his body he could score with were offside?

It is sad that, after the work that was done to save Celtic at that time, when R*****s went tits up, Celtic decided that, like a love-struck swain, it could not live without R*****s, and rather than throw dirt on the coffin, Celtic jumped into the grave and swore that even death (liquidation) would never separate them.

rumor that Lunin is one of several keepers wanted by Celtic … thought he would be too expensive … but today’s performance might have knocked a few million off his price!

June 17, 2024 4:25 pm

John Keane was a member of the Celtic Board from 1994 until 2019 (as a non-exec). He has received the collective criticism directed at that body during that time (I never heard anyone exempt him from the collective criticism).

It’s good to hear him gain rightful credit for his actions in 1994 that earned him that position on our Board.

I never met or knew the man but I doubt it was the only good thing he ever did.

June 17, 2024 4:32 pm

Still would be too expensive based on how poor he looked today.

He didnt look great today, but he looked more than good enough any time I saw him this year for Real…

but, given wages, I see this story as similar to the Liverpool keeper, or the German keeper who just signed for Saudi for $160,000 per week! …. I’ll believe it when I see it!

So Porteous gets an additional two game suspension for a tackle that would not likely merited a foul against any team but Rangers in SPL.
No great surprises we don’t produce skillful footballers anymore!

Yeah our bean counters love the presence of the Huns, but to be fair, so do many of our fans, a lot of whom disappeared post 2013/4 for a couple of years until BR arrived, and coincidentally, so did Newco in the top flight.

As such, the business model is based on full houses in a small League with a constant challenge from our zombie neighbours. Sad as it is.

June 17, 2024 5:26 pm

He was always prone to the nasty challenge or two when he played for Hibs. Possibly as good a reason as any why we didn’t move for him, despite being available for very little. It was a reckless and out of control challenge which could have seriously injured Gundogan, and the only real question is how the ref missed it.

June 17, 2024 5:26 pm

Porteous’ suspension might be the best news Scotland fans get all tournament!

June 17, 2024 5:37 pm

Probably means going with a back four of Ralston,Hendry,Tierney and Robertson for the other two games. Not a bad idea, given how badly the experiment failed on Friday. Cue outrage and scapegoating if we lose, all aimed at the four current or former Celts.

Bet Harry Kane to complete 4 x dribbles last night.

Bet came up halfway through him singing the National Anthem 😁

Have had to turn the audio off on these games. Fed up listening to ” this guy played for blah blah blah in premier league scored against Everton etc in 2017. Yesterday Albania keeper played for Bradford. NOBODY GIVES A SHIT. They are playing for their country . Not an English league club.
Does my head in it really does.

June 17, 2024 5:58 pm

Watching the 19th and 20th teams to start Euro24. 1 or 2 players on 19 of these teams has at some point during the game exhibited a piece of exquisite skill. Could be instant ball control while running at full pace, no look back heel pass to team mate, or a superb full volley on target.
There has been one exception.
You’ll never guess who.

June 17, 2024 6:18 pm

Rehearsed corner move leads to Belgian goal.
Called offside.

June 17, 2024 6:19 pm

Trossard put everything he had into that shot.
Good save.

The top teams havent been as fluid and exciting as some tournaments in the past, but what has been notable is that even the so called lesser teams are well coached, defensively sound, play well as a team, and can counter attack ….

June 17, 2024 7:03 pm

Mike in Toronto.
You are correctimundo. Italy U-17 beat Spain U-17 very recently in the European Final. Given what they invest in youth coaching, you can see why their senior teams are so successful.

But when you see watch the so called lesser lights like Slovakia and Romania, it dawns on you that we are miles and miles behind in everything from skill to speed to athletic ability to game intelligence. And getting further behind.

Nice to know that my active participation in Superbru lasted all of four days. Certainly didn’t see the last two results coming.

Maybe the ref had been mentored by H Dallas?

While I wouldn’t be surprised, maybe it’s just because I’m crap at this predicting stuff.

RIP John Keane.

June 17, 2024 7:51 pm

Most games relatively cautious, not necessarily deliberate but well thought out coaching plans making teams work very hard to gain points.
Germany V Scotland was the outlier where a well coached team played against a poor side.Lacking ,skill belief or any semblance of a team.
Today Romania v Ukraine was a battle between a cohesive well drilled positive possession side against an old fashioned side to side possession team who never posed any threat.
Was no surprise Romania won with ease.

saw a story in the lead up to the French game. It mentioned that former Arsenal/France midfielder invested some of his salary he made as a footballer into a bio-energy company… and he is now worth between 10 and 20 Billion!

gone are the days of footballers buying pubs and being broke by the time they are 40!
