Kinda but not quite

Ah the summertime, don’t you just love it. Beaches, every window open, backyard parties with burnt meat,,,and of course the transfer window is open so everyone is bitching about Celtic’s famous biscuit tin being missing in action. Not every year but most, Ange had them whipped into shape.
Or did he?
You can imagine the conversation,,
“Alright mate, I want these three players on opening day, have them wrapped up and ready to announce.”
“Three on opening day?”
“Yes mate and they are quality, they pass my eye test.”
“Three QUALITY players on opening day? Do you know how much they will cost or what wages they need to come?”
“Yes mate, eight million for the three and 8 grand a week each.”
“Sounds reasonable Ange, I’ll get it done just for you.”
And ‘mate’ breathes a sigh of relief knowing most business has been done for cheap and the manager should be happy and impressed by this new found efficiency.
So while we have pulled the finger out in the past, it suited our suits to do so.
I posit that’s the main reason for that rarest of ducks in a row moments by a notoriously reactive not proactive club.
However that was two and a half years ago, much water has flowed under the bridge. I fully recall my own and some others expectation that despite the numerous ‘fillers and punts’ last season, the Gaffer would get a quality player or two to hang his hat on and excite the supporters. I fully recall my disappointment alongside others that it never occurred. It wasn’t good enough, and thankfully very important others agree, hence the restructure. We have yet to gleam any details, but we can take onboard what’s out there.
The boss said he could have signed 9 players by now, but none that he wanted.
It was nice of him to let us know he’s not having personnel forced upon him, an easy message to extrapolate. Do this mean that long dreamed of quality shall arrive? Well that statement alongside the heavily linked incomings suggest so.
I’ve read the suggestion signing a new keeper your on loan striker and midfielder is simply standing still, but I’m going to disagree with regards to the three particular players.
It would be the most Celtic-like thing to wake upto a 2.5m player tomorrow. Through their mouthpieces it would again be very Celtic-like to blame Benfica overpricing their player, ditto Norwich. It would be easy to stick to the same old, after all the season ticket money is paid and the waiting list is closed, be there or be square.
But we aren’t waking up to that, Brendan told us he won’t be waking up to that either. It’s the week Celtic fly out to the US of A, and I’ve no doubt he wants those three on that plane. Bada tells us Bernardo is incoming, we know Idah wants to join and we are talking to Norwich, others say dealings to get the keeper have increased of late.
My point is, with each player costing over 4 million Euros, with two of those players having proven their quality in the Hoops and that goalie looked good elsewhere,
with no punts arriving or wanted, it’s clear we are indeed raising the bar, not just standing still. A club doesn’t spend circa 17 million on 3 players to stand still, three players with their best years ahead of them, touch wood they all sign. That’s buying well and planning well, something of a stranger to Parkhead.
Paying good money (in Celtic terms) for two of last seasons top contributors to return full time is raising the bar, as is staying over the 4 million mark.
It cannot just be big enough transfer fees though, these players will expect to be handsomely rewarded, the easy answer is if you’re going to reward anyone, award the better players. These chaps will be adding a hefty amount to wage bill, alongside taking a hefty amount out of the bank. We’ve also had departures, Big Joe, Haksabanovic, Tilio and Bernabei getting loaned again.
While one might say standing still, another might say streamlining, upgrading, growing up at last if you will.
“We’re keeping the better players, losing the lesser ones’ might sound very Ange-like business, but one must admit its different when the new targets are all 4 million plus Europeans, some might cost as high as 6 plus addon’s, on good wages.
Ange didn’t get that much leeway, Brendan won more points than him on Europe’s biggest stage in his first season back, with his team. And he’s more committed, proving true to his word, and he’s a winner. That was one hell of a double he just pulled off.
And he’s promised another two years.
So this summer is kinda but not quite the same. Slow outta traps, aye as usual. Better horses than usual emerging? Sure looks, sounds, and reads that way.
But ultimately the biggest thing summer affords is the ending of asking a certain question. The ending of an era, the slaying of the dragon.
Because if he honestly isn’t entertaining lesser players and is going 4plus on the gooduns on good wages, no longer shall we read the words that have haunted us for a long stretch of our adult life’s.
Peter’s buying the players.
Only four words, but the implication and real life consequences went much deeper.
We are those three signings away from putting that legacy to death once and for all, and that, I shall never consider standing still.

Johnston and Canada playing in 28C and 78% humidity. No roof on the MetLife Stadium.

Brilliant long ball from midfield, superb control from Alvarez, and there’s yer dinner.
Argentina 1-0.

July 10, 2024 2:12 am

Argentina 2-0. Messi.
Hopefully Johnstone will be in DC on the 21st.

Over 80,000 in the stadium for Canada vs Argentina.

July 10, 2024 2:47 am

I think Argentina will struggle in the Final against either Colombia or Uruguay.

July 10, 2024 2:51 am

Canada just miss scoring by a whisker.
They have played really well.

July 10, 2024 2:54 am

Martinez is an asshole, but a really good keeper.

with Martinez, Alcaraz and Messi, that Argentina squad has some serious firepower up front. Was Leah’s going to be an uphill fight for Canada. But I think Canad hve acquitted themselves well in this game and in the tournament. That Argentina team is better than any of the teams in the Euros.

Game over. Argies in the Final on Sunday.
Nitey nite.

No full back or centre back then, possibly O’Reilly going. Its hard to share your optimism. 6m spent on CCV and Jota, that’s where we should be imo

Lawwell and DD were If we put the same effort elsewhere!
BR had a better record on signings.
If Hart hadn’t sprung a last minute exit.
If we hadn’t prepared for our annual European humiliation.
If success takes priority over greed.
if we the support weren’t such board enablers.
If we had a cohesive football department.
If we put the same effort towards the football team as we do with merchandising and PR bullshit.
If we only had people with the spirit of Jock and the Lisbon Lions at the club today?

Much as I am loving the loss of the preseason cup on the other side of the city, my fear is that we continue to use the tribute act as the “who we need to stay ahead of” benchmark rather than similar sized European teams.

July 10, 2024 9:44 am

I can see us asking Joe Hart to hang up the pipe and slippers and play on next season. Bloody ridiculous that we didn’t have a keeper lined up,bearing in mind he announced his retirement in February.

Should read if Lawwell and DD were elsewhere!!!

I can honestly see Brendan kicking it into touch if we still havent signed up the required players by the time the USA tour is over. He is too relaxed about it all at present. A sure sign of a man who has made up his mind on something.

Fan- when the Lawwells were in tandem last year, in my opinion they thought they could fk him over with nonsense signings, and messing him about behind the scenes, on the premise that he’s walked before, and he won’t do it twice.

Talking of merchandise, I was in the Celtic shop yesterday. I asked when the new away kit was out, purely curiosity on my part. The woman told me that it won’t be till the end of the month as we have just released all the new training gear and showed me towards racks of t shirts, tracksuits and hoodies. Now bear in mind we’ve just released the new strip a week or so ago it’s no wonder we are angry. The club know exactly the timelines for fleecing fans but spending our money can wait till it’s absolutely necessary and all our top targets are elsewhere.
I am another that thinks BR will walk if they don’t have players in soon and I hope he will be honest with the fans this time about why.

Is there any point to us having an academy.

July 10, 2024 12:16 pm

On a brighter note.
Was a pleasure to watch the brilliant 16 year old Yamal show experienced campaigners how it’s done.
His vision and ability to make the pass are extraordinary for one so young.
His shooting is no bad either..

Auldheid 634,
I appreciate that Michael Nicholson is doing the boards bidding. Can’t say I wouldn’t do the same for 2k a day. I would just like a forward thinking CEO who wants us to be the best we can possibly be, not one step ahead of the Huns.
Whilst MN is a Board member and can influence policy , ultimately it is the Board as a whole that decides it. With a large holding of shares DD has most influence.
MN then executes the policy as Chief Executive Officer..
However as I mentioned yesterday there is more of an upside than downside for Celtic in loosening the ties with our main rivals AND if all DD is interested in is money and rising share value, then it becomes in his own interests to change the policy that has kept share value low.
I would be surprised if this change of thinking had not been shared with BR when he signed and the rest of The Board will fall into line.

If that is not the case those running Celtic can be deemed to be insane on basis of doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

We’ll see. 🙂

There has never been a better era to blood youngsters with the paucity of opposition in Scotland.
Unfortunately we have no strategy to do so.
Contrary to the notion BR does not do youth integration. Even the oft used Sterling as an example was an expensive purchase by Liverpool.
Can’t think of one youth at Celtic BR brought through.
Our fragmented football operations at Celtic have too many competing egos for it to work.
Just now best we can hope for is making a little money from.

Does the fact the season books are sold out influence the Board’s attitude to signing players?

And if so, how?

Does it make them more, or less, inclined to splash the cash?

July 10, 2024 12:29 pm

Don’t laugh at comparison but I noticed watching Yamal , something that Shearer also commented on, was the weight and pace of his passing, making it easier for the recipient to receive the ball and make next move.

The comparator?

James Forrest (in that specific area only).

That is why he was returned to first team duty.

Pity James is twice as old as Yamal.

‘July 10, 2024 12:20 pm there is more of an upside than downside for Celtic in loosening the ties with our main rivals’

Mabaes aye and mabaes naw.

If loosening ties reduces the allure of The Old Firm by imperiling the future of you rivals and your ultimate ambition is to get Celtic into the EPL, an ambition you assume is more likely to be realised as part of The Old Firm than as a stand alone entity, then preserving the credibility of The Old Firm rivalry is a priority above all else.

Don’t want to sound like Mags but I think it gives The Board carte blanche to do what they like.

Had I said “do what they effing like” I would be deeper into Mags territory.
Only the full sweary would put me there.

In Mags defence I recognise the exasperation but am always hopeful that something unexpected will turn up.

If Yamal was one of ours he would still be in the b team.

Here’s a radical suggestion.
the league cup is a pretty pointless competition unless it forms part of a winning treble.
Why does the SFA not make it a development competition. Only eligible to Scottish and academy based players.

it would take the pressure off us having to field our strongest players in a lower competition.
it would be a fantastic opportunity and showcase for the best Scottish talent in the country.
It could be a pathway.

July 10, 2024 12:41 pm

As you say weight of pass was incredible and notable as colleague was moving and not standing still.
Was refreshing to see someone not influenced by negative possession football who would receive ball and play it backwards and sideways.

You assume Celtic want to get into the EPL.

How? By what mechanism – “look we can bring R2ngers with us and bring a bit of sub culture to one of the most popular leagues world wide?”

If Celtic managed that they should go into the unicorn selling business.

They did try it in Feb 2011 when the writing was on the wall when PL and Martin Bain made a joint approach to EL that was rebuffed.

What about the cognitive dissonance at play where one view held is DD is all about money but then prefers the crumbs from the SPFL to the riches of CL which Celtic CAN take part in ad infinitum?

The biggest danger of that is DD selling up to God knows who.

If DD really wants R2ngers, a club whom he must know by now cheated Celtic for years, to be realistic competitors he will have to encourage/entice some group to buy them.

Much easier to let them wallow at a level their thinking has brought them to.

July 10, 2024 1:51 pm

So another of our home grown talented youngsters looks as if they may leave. Daniel Kelly is reportedly being chased by Bundesliga champs Bayer Leverkusen along with a bunch of other interested top clubs. Most likely he’ll follow Roco and numerous other ‘potentials’ over the past couple of seasons’ who have chosen to leave Celtic in order to develop their careers. Meanwhile we are left with rank upon rank of bench warmers who we have paid sizable amounts of cash for, who we basically can’t even give away – even on loan deals. Yet we watch the Parkhead doors slam behind those very few home grown talents the club has developed as they leave. Can’t say i blame them when we are now still being linked with the ‘new wonder kid’ of every other league on the planet – outwith Scotland that is and as long as they don’t cost more than a couple of luncheon vouchers and a free tour of Celtic park.

Aye we are good at losing players with potential but not so good at actually signing one. Speaking of which any signs of that most of elusive of things – a 1st team ready quality player joining? Nah didn’t think so. I also note we have been linked with Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher again (btw it’s pronounced ‘Kwee -vin if anyone is interested). Must be feck all happening if the click bait sites are regurgitating this nonsense – reality – haggling over £1 mill or so for Portugal’s under 21 captain, fantasy – paying £20 mill for Caoimhin -😏😂😂😂😂

Damn right about Kelly in particular, and also about Kelleher. To keep a player like Kelly,we need to alter the structure that pays them peanuts. To get a player like Kelleher,we have to sign them early.

Problem there is that it puts us back into project territory.

What’s happening now is players from the Development Squad, who are offered a full time contract, are being managed by agents who want the players to get a signing on fee, which they would get when moving to another Club.

I saw that post and the response. I thought that perhaps it was a surreal comment on the new signings Celtic has made since last season. Sort of Len Shackleton meets John Cage.

And yet another team sign a goalkeeper. This time it’s Kilmarnock, transferring McCrorie from Sevco. We have had 20 weeks notice from Joe, yet tumbleweed is still drifting lazily through our recruitment office. Key Performance Indices set at Zero. We fly out to DC in 6 days.
In other news, Dundee sign Simon Murray from Ross County. He will be a useful addition to them, with an immediate impact, a concept with which we have inordinate difficulty.

I tell you, that respondent is a rank badjin.

Can’t make my mind up on watching the game today. I haven’t watched any of Engerlund’s games, as they have the luck of the devil and inevitably get through. I think they will do so again today. Any BBC site I click on is already crowing and having an orgasm. God save us if they win the whole caboodle.

I think I have talked myself out if watching. If they lose, I’ll watch the rerun.
