Call Me Gerry,
Any reason why you didn’t answer my point that Ange also called our board out over how long it took them to get players in? It’s quite clear there is a problem when good managers like AP and BR feel the need to alert the support to the problems with recruitment. The fact that we are repeating the same mistakes must concern you surely.
Although we have disagreed, it certainly stimulated some debate and that is what the site should be for.
Auldheid @11:12 pm,
Yes, it was last year, yet it is a clear indication that Michael Nicholson and Chris McKay were not in a position to deliver on the promises they gave to our then new manager.
That strongly suggests they don’t hold the power to deliver.
Now, we have to believe, as it was Dermot Desmond that sent the Executive out to Spain and Dermot has a subsequent meeting with Brendan in London, our major shareholder would have repeated these assurances to Brendan.
Yet, we still have Celtic PLC reneging on the promises they made our to our manager.
The recruitment team were having meetings with our manager, now we have to believe our manager was reiterating to the recruitment team what he was saying in his press conferences regarding the players he wanted in.
Now the only aspect of Celtic PLC that could have instructed the recruitment team to ignore the manager and carry on regardless and countermand the CEO and COO was the Board.
It follows that despite what was said to the contrary that the Chairman of the Board, for he is the only person with that sort of clout in the Boardroom, was calling the shots.
Peter Lawwell was defacto in charge of Celtic PLC and running recruitment.
Which is why his go to guy in Celtic social media predicted with great accuracy what was going to happen regarding recruitment.
Of course that WAS then…
We then had the January ’24 window, we needed badly to strengthen, R2ngers had won the first major trophy of the year and were certainly not out the running for a treble, Celtic were out of Europe, the new recruits, those who were actually of the requisite standard, needed a great deal of fitness/conditioning work, development work and integration into the Manager’s methods.
We needed “oven” ready players that January with the experience/pace/physicality etc etc we were so lacking for the SFA Cup campaign and to be competitive in the League run in.
Nothing happened
The manager had to put his foot down, rejected most of the players offered by the recruitment team with the exception of Kuhn and had to bring Adam Idah in himself on a last minute dot com loan deal.
Presumably threats from our manager and the backing of the major shareholder allowed for the signing of Idah and the subsequent sacking of the recruitment team.
So here we are again a new window and the same issues have raised their head, we got in one “moneyball” goalkeeper in despite knowing six months earlier that Joe Hart was retiring at the end of the season.
It was up to Brendan presumably backed by the major shareholder to bring in Joe’s replacement in Kasper Schmeichel.
The Board were negotiating with Atalanta for the departure of Matt O’Riley for a derisory sum.
It was our manager, again you’d imagine with the backing of our major shareholder, who vetoed the transfer, with the players agreement, and has got an undertaken that the Celtic players would not be sold off on the cheap as is the Board’s wont.
Now, two months on, with the Scottish season imminently kicking off, we have signed our first outfield player who was a loan to buy and should have been with the squad on the tour Stateside.
The manager needs three to four more players in, quality, experienced players in the next four weeks.
Are we going to be drawing teeth on each of these* where the Manager’s wishes are ignored? And he has to go to the major shareholder so the Executive whose hands are tied by the Board, are allowed to bring in players and fulfill the promises they made to the manager over a year ago.
It’s a ridiculous situation with one man responsible for this impasse, a man who by rights, as he was CEO for an overly long time and retired in disgrace a few years back, has no right whatsoever to be Chairman of Celtic Football Club…
*Obviously this impasse is caused by the Board digging their heels in, the share price indicates some sort of power play at work – we had better hope the devils we know win ’cause if PL & Co win Celtic will be in the slow lane ad infinitum

Surely the club – manager know wether it is worth continuing our pursuit of Idah?
And can we now concentrate on upgrading the left-hand side of our defence please.
My clapping won’t be so happy if we go another full season with Greg & co as first picks.
Btw ..
Be careful with your bank accounts, as someone managed to gain access to mine to help themselves to my money! Have now been on the phone for the best part of three days trying to sort it out

Our current performance as a football team — curates egg comes to mind.
Pre season coaching / conditioning / set up — progress / new bloke making a mark?.
Squad management / development — BR is shaking the youth tree / B team sleeping.
Talent acquisition — GK situation looking good / overall a joke.
DD vs BR — does not make sense to me.
The big effort to get BR back and then to leave him at the airport with no pick-up.
Something is definitely not right regarding BR’s return — all the effort then DD ignores him.
DD calls the shots — if stuff is happening then he is allowing it to happen.
He might still be in golf mode / left PL in charge and PL is tweaking any tail he can find.
DD might be playing games — letting them work it out but there is and will be a cost to the club.
Anyway — amateur hour in G40.
DD can’t be ersed with the hassle of trying to run us properly.
Just wants more 32 county people about the place and PL to keep the risk level at zero.
Not a good place to be.
CL implosion would be a disaster.
We still have some of the AP bounce / growth agenda left.
However PL is out with the dettol and the wire wool to get rid of the optimism.
If we ever have to play a back 4 of AR / SW / LS / GT in any competitive game then DD is running the club for laughs and giggles trying to win bets with his golfing cronies.

James Forrest nails it. Again.
Lawwell is the de facto head of football at celtic.
He appointed himself to this position.
Kasper Schmeichels comments today are quite revealing. He says he had just went on holiday after the euros when BR texted him. We’ve known Joe Hart was retiring since February. Whoever is in charge of recruitment had 5 months to find a keeper yet we rely on a personal contact of the manager to ensure we have a keeper who isn’t Scott Bain. This demonstrates (for me) just how limited the people running our club are. It also illustrates why they’re so determined to link our fortunes to the ‘Old Firm’ model. They are less limited than the basket case that is the huns. If the people in charge of our club were to compete against other clubs of a similar financial size etc the incompetence of our custodians would be so stark their position would become untenable. They need the fervour and distraction of the rivalry with the huns to deflect from their own inadequacies.

Can’t see it getting played at CP….
You know I go onto a few Celtic blogs and on nearly all of them there are board fans . I don’t get it , obviously Celtic men n women who follow the hoops and want to see the best players we can afford playing for the team . Yet show support for a board who nearly season after season refuse to sanction the quality for the team . I couldn’t name half of the guys taking up a seat front row of the directors box , I know the ex labour man Brian Wilson but do not have a clue what he brings to the table unless it’s to nod approval at everything lawwell suggests .
let me ask when it was announced PL was back ( was he ever away ) was it met with trepidation from the minority or the majority , I know the amount of fans round about me feared the worse , we knew what was coming , and so it’s coming to pass . There must be a reason why this is being allowed to happen , for some reason the club are being hampered from becoming a force again . We have the stadium , the fan base , the finance , and a top top manager nothing to hold us back . Except .

I would suggest the majority of our fans are happy with beating the huns. Going into work on a Monday on full wind up mode and getting it right up the huns. 60k season tickets with a waiting list of 10k-18k more suggests the board are giving people exactly what they want. I was chatting with my best mates about how I was dreading a game in Europe cause I feared we would get embarrassed and the consensus was Europe is a bonus but as long as we beat they bastards (the huns) then that was fine.
Madmitch @ 10:35 am,
DD v BR is a herring rouge
DD & BR v The Board is the issue as far a I can see it.
DD is not going to micro-mamage Celtic
He is proactive, as he’s shown many a time, including Jetting in to convince Ange to stay – far too little, far too late.
Yet DD wanted Brendan back, Big Pedro wanted Enzo Maresca in.
DD won that particular battle but he had to do it with a slight of hand, he had to wait until PL was out of the country and mobilise the Executive (fair play on that one;) now, what does that tell you?
A PLC is a complex beast, a PLC with an activist investor calling the shots and running a Football Club is fraught.
The Board set the strategy.
Now the Board say our realistic objectives are to get domestic trophies
Competing for European trophies are beyond our grasp, we do not have the wherewithal for that.
Further, we get the bulk of our European competition money from being in the competition regardless of how we do.
The investment necessary to make us more competitive in the competion is very high, we probably won’t see an roi, in fact there is no guarantee we will do better with the higher investment in the squad than we would without the spend.
We have an obligation to look after shareholders money first and foremost and unjustified spend will not be tolerated.
Now, there are many arguments against that strategy and we have voiced them all at one time or another.
Yet the fact remains, if that is the Board’s strategy, if the Board agree it – it is very difficult for a CEO, a CFO or a major shareholder to rail against that.
The Board have fiscal responsibility on their side….
Look at the original Rangers, look what happened to them when they were profligate with spending, especially on Football players and their wages.
No, it’s not simply a case of DD zooming in and reading the riot act, their is a myriad of rules, regulations and legalities to go through.
With a PLC, ultimately the power lies with the Board, the person with the casting vote in the Boardroom is the Chairman.
The elephant in the room, if you will…
Hail Hail
St Tams
We really are. Do you know for the 1st time ever (I’m 43) I’m actually bored with the goings on at Celtic. I’m fed up with this bullshit pantomime we go through every season, with the same excuses from the same people when it’s glaringly obvious what needs done (yet other clubs seem to manage it fine). There are people at the club who are paid fortunes to get these things done but they trot out the same excuses/apologies/platitudes again and again. These excuses and apologies are just an admission that these people are out of their depth and not up to the job.
Mitch @10.35
Can I ask how you know what Dermot, Peter and Brendan are doing and thinking? I’d love to know how you know all this stuff.
I haven’t a clue what any of those 3 men are doing, and I definitely don’t have a clue what they are thinking.
I look forward to your answer 👍
Auldheid @11:12 pm,
Yes, it was last year, yet it is a clear indication that Michael Nicholson and Chris McKay were not in a position to deliver on the promises they gave to our then new manager.
That strongly suggests they don’t hold the power to deliver.
===
That is your opinion based on not knowing what has been going on and why.
I am suggesting that the circumstances this time are different with the transparency FSR offers and that MIGHT see a change in approach.
I have used the word dilemma to describe the position The Board find themselves being richer than last year to justify not spending on players to the 70% limit of earnings.
They might decide to ride out the hoo ha if they don’t spend to the full or decide it is only hoo ha on social media and ST sales will be unaffected.
I fear the latter because that is what they have done for years with no impact on finance from the support, so why change?
I hope though that they take into account that a more informed support will decide their loyalty is being used against them and actually do something to change the policy of last year when we spent less on players than R2ngers but still won the title and Scottish Cup.
When we look for someone to blame check the mirror, take responsibility for our part in supporting the spend policy of years, shrug our shoulders and enjoy the domestic success that policy has delivered year on year.
What else is there?
Chairbhoy
A good explanation of how things work in a PLC.
Would it not be more accurate to say though that The Chairman has the casting vote in the event of a tie?
Is it one Board member one vote or does the number of shares each hold come into the equation?
I cannot see DD giving PL the power to overule his proposals.
Another unknown so far.
Jim Craig the guest of honour to unfurl the League Champions flag at Celtic Park on Sunday
Was Jim Craig the original choice, or is he just FILLING in for someone else.
CB @ 11.16
Interesting stuff but I fear you are well of the pace.
If you have first hand on this then please share the wealth.
DD is our major shareholder.
He acts at times as if he is our majority shareholder.
AP is flashing his nickers at the EPL — it was Team Desmond that made the meeting.
AP is away to Spurs — it was BR that replaced him after some intense 32 county chat.
PL — chairman’s badge or no chairman’s badge — was not involved.
PL never came back as Chairman without DD being OK with the situation.
If PL schemed to return without — repeat without — DD’s agreement then it would have been a miracle.
All it would have taken is a few pointed articles on current corporate governance standards to de-rail the return of a 16 year CEO as the Chairman within 18 months.
Questions in Holyrood.
Concert party at the AGM.
Articles in the press.
If DD was against it then it would not have happened.
Consequently — from the outside looking in — the idea that PL has developed a boardroom in his own image to the detriment of DD’s influence is something that I don’t think stands up to much scrutiny.
I have no doubt that PL has has worked every lever to increase his influence on every sort of football matter but everything points to DD being the final arbiter in the direction of the club. The board you mention is stocked full of nodding donkeys / stuffed shirts / hospitality troughers who might ask a few questions if we are lucky but they will do their master’s bidding.
They were not given the job to make decisions — they were given the job to provide some fresh air between DD’s diktats and the day to day running of the club.
The board are not providing the strategic direction that the club is working too at the moment.
If they were you have to ask who is providing the lead / the management nous to develop and deliver this board generated plan.
Boardroom — DD speaks first / he speaks longest / he speaks loudest then the board nod.
If DD is not local then he employs a few legal flunkies to translate his demands into corporate governance friendly actions and what he doesn’t dictate they busk it to the tune of no financial risk / no more DD cash into the club.
As for the Govan FC financial chat — you would appear to have become very financially conservative in your old age. TFOD1.1 was a SDM production based on ego / greed / stupidity / bank collusion with a magic chequebook.
It has absolutely no impact / connection / relation on how we should run the club.
Growing amounts of cash in the bank in all forms of business points to poor quality / low grade management if the reason has not been publicised by the board.
It points to them not having the imagination / capability / strategic vision to make use of the cash that the business is generating and they should be replaced with new blood that can make things happen.
New blood / no vision — cash should be returned to the shareholders.
New blood / strategic vision — put forward the plan / get agreement / go forward.
In conclusion — not sure I get your argument …

”That is your opinion based on not knowing what has been going on and why.
with all due respect that is blatantly NOT the case.
We know what has been going on.
I gave the courtesy of examples to advance my argument and you ignored it.
We know what Brendan Rodgers was saying, that is a matter of record
We know what CQN leads were saying at the time, again that is a matter of record
We know that Brendan Rodgers got assurances from the major shareholder and the Celtic Executive that is a matter of record.
So in what way does that suggest we don’t know what’s going on?
I took the time to listen to the media conferences, I took the time to read the CQN leads and I took the time to read the media reports.
So I choose to be informed.
So saying I didn’t know what was going on is out of order.
And a p!$$ poor excuse if you don’t mind me saying so.
Your FSR herring rouge is more of a shaky opinion.
Celtic are way within the parameters of the FSR
Of course these are important rules and regulations, yet it’s not like Celtic are Everton and sailing close to the wind.
Another thing, when the FSR was 90% and Celtic had a bumper year, wouldn’t have made more sense to buy players and max out on FSR.
These players would be regarded as football assets.
If we were sailing close to the wind we could’ve sold these players a d treated the money as football income.
In that respect your FSR Celtic strategy doesn’t stand scrutiny.
Occum Razor it…
It’s the Celtic Board being their parsimonious, safety first, unambitious selves.

From previous blog suggesting that Board members are rewarded for putting share value above all considerations.
The industry term as you will know is Key Performance Indicators or KPI.
KPIs are not easy to set and they can end up measuring what is easy to measure as opposed to what will make the business better.
It is possible that is the case at Celtic, either knowingly or lazily because getting a kpi right requires effort.
Football success or failure should be part of a kpi because that is where revenue is generated.
However even if it is does it cover success in Europe or limited to domestic success?
I don’t know if KPI’s are published in AGM papers but it would help transparency if they were as the absence of such produces your suggestion.
It may be right but I think it just as likely poorly constructed KPIs happen to favour those who create them with a sharevalue mindset..

Boardrooms — surely one “man” one vote?
Loads of shares — you get to propose your people for the board.
Chairman does not have an ordinary vote but has the casting vote.
That is my memory of the rules — well the UK / US rules.
Might need to buy a new copy of the Ladybird Book of Corp[orate Governance.
However Big Auto has a story from 25 years ago that complicates matters.
German supervisory board — Chairman seemingly had an ordinary vote and then had to make a casting vote as well as it was a tie.
Him having two votes for the motion — which then passed — did not go down well and proposed CEO walked as he felt he did not have the confidence of the board.

I’ll post something on memes I thought I’d posted last night.
I do so because there is a danger that folk like you and others who put a lot of thought into their contributions are swayed by views they do not know for certain to be true.
It’s like looking through a telescope. If you do so from the wrong end you will miss detail that appears from the other end.
This isn’t about the Board it’s about thinking for self.
There is a big difference between thinking what we know and actually knowing.
During the Res12 saga I started off thinking one thing to be true but by the end of it all I had changed my mind as detail not known at the start surfaced later on down the line.
As a result I have a better understanding of the forces at play that influenced decisions taken by Celtic.
That does not mean I trust all those on the Celtic side, but I can understand that perhaps were I in their position I might have behaved as they did which gave me peace.
If you are in with the bricks / major shareholders onside — you write your own KPI’s.
That is the problem of have a CEO in place for 16 years.
That is the issue of him coming back as chairman.
We are run by a pals act.
New blood lasted 2 months because he upset the cosy consensus.
Primary KPI: season book sales.
Which affects season book sales more, European performance or the absence of huns?
That’s what determines priorities.

Thanks – Yes, it is the casting vote in the event of a tie.
Yet PL has had twenty years experience working that Board.
Did you see BR’s recent interview at Lennoxtown, it was very interesting
One thing that caught my ear
BR stated he knew the worth of footballers having worked in the EPL
He said the valuations for Matt O’Riley were far too low
He stated that the players would be valued on their individual value rather than the League value.
It was interesting that BR went the fiscal route to block the sale of Matt, rather than the footballing route.
The Celtic Board have a duty to get the maximum value for their assets.
Selling of Matt cheap is not in line with shareholder value…
Another smart manoeuvre from Brendan

Hi Guys
Starting to get a wee bit excited at the weekend ahead. Superbru filled in, considering the 10 questions above and delighted to see that Jobo is continuing his POTY competition!
Just need a few players in the door and we’re good to go! Idah and a left back are an absolute must!
Here are my predictions:
1 top 3 teams:Celtic R2ngers and Hearts
2,,,Scottish Cup winners? Celtic
3,,,the League Cup winners? Celtic
4,,,Celtics top scorer? Kyogo
5,,,the SPL’s top scorer? Kyogo
6,,,The SPL Player of the Year winner? Kyogo
7,,,How many Champions League points shall we win? 9
8,,,How many red cards shall be given to Celtic players in all competitions? 6
9,,,which player will win Jobo’s Player of the Year competition? Kyogo
10,,,How many players will be added to the squad in January? 4

If the largest shareholder gets to put his people on the Board under a one man one vote scenario that might apply, does that not make it unlikely he is going to put someone who could thwart his wishes into a position where he might do so?
I take the simplistic view that whoever owns the baw in street fitbaw can take it hame in the huff if losing.
We are a much reduced club / institution / football team if beating Govan FC is all we have as a future / ambition — points to them living rent free in too many heads within our support.
MOR — he is only worth what people are willing to pay for him.
Any buyer will only offer what suits his agenda / business interests.
Very lumpy market full of ego / subjectivity / low ball moneyballers / second rate bean counters.
However if his value to us is higher then we need to try and keep him.
MOR is worth 50mill — just a case of will we get it or will someone else?
Glad to see BR get onboard the big bucks @ G40 bus …
